I am looking to purchase a macbook on ebay for my mom.

They have apple care until november 2014, does apple care still work if it transfers owners?
thanks,

  • Looking to purchase a macbook pro, and i've got a few questions

    Hi Guys,
I know some of these questions have been asked before, but i'm just trying to get all that information together...
I really don't want to purchase a macbook pro - only for a new one to be announced a week later - the few people i've talked to say this is unlikely due to space and heat constraints within a case any smaller than it is currently... what do you guys think?
The display issue... i work in graphic design, using quark, photoshop etc and i am unusre as to wether the glossy is better than the matte? if anyone works in the same type of feild and can give me their opinions on what they have, wether they are happy with it etc?
Battery... a lot of the time i will be using the laptop plugged into a second monitor, i was always taught to use run the battery down and then plug it in to charge to avoid damaging the battery life, is this an issue anymore? i'd really like to use it plugged in in this situation, and only unplug it when i need to be mobile, will i then find the battery is rubbish because i've used it plugged in all the time? what do you guys do?
thanks!! i think that is it for now!!

if you want an idea of if an update is possibly on the horizon, macrumors.com has a buyer's guide. of course it's based on nothing more than speculation, but what they do is calculate if an update is likely to be coming, and when, which is worked out from the history of how often a particular model has been updated in the past. I've never used it myself, but it looks like it might be useful at least as a guide.
at any rate, if you need a machine now, or soon, there's not a lot to be gained by waiting. looking at intel's roadmap for what's next in terms of notebook CPUs, the 'santa rosa' chip is due to be released in about a month I think. it is obviously going to be a step forward, as usual, with probably lower power consumption and less heat, no surprises there. also from what I've read, it will top out at 2.4Ghz which is not a great deal more than the 2.33Ghz max of the core 2 duo available now. I also read that it will have double the cache size of the current chips, which will have a positive impact on performance. and it's also possible, though I haven't read it, that machines using this CPU may be able to have more than 3GB of RAM. if any of this is life-changing for you, then I suppose you could wait. how long a wait it will be, no one can say.
as for the display.. I would go for matte. traditionally that's what visual pros opt for, so it's probably the safer bet. but check them out and see what you like.. bearing in mind that glossy is far more susceptible to ambient light changes, so your experience of working may vary a great deal in different light conditions.
as for battery cycling.. you can stay on power the whole time you work. just make sure to do a power cycle about once a month to ensure a healthy battery. there are detailed instructions for this at apple support, it's not the same technique as for powerbooks.

  • I am studying Graphic Desing and im looking to purchase a Macbook Pro 13-inch: 2.5 GHz

Hi, If I purchase the Macbook Pro 13-inch: 2.5 GHz, will this model reach the requirements and specs that I will need for my course (Graphic Design) in regards to using Photoshop/Illustrator? apart from purchasing these programs do I need any add ons to the laptop itself?

If you're able to afford it, I would opt for a 15.4" screen - the larger screen real estate is almost a must for Photoshop and Illustrator (and InDesign, in particular, which I assume you'll be purchasing as well - Adobe has very good educational discounts on the CS6 Design Standard package: it's horrible to try to work with two page spreads on a small monitor - even 15.4" is just barely enough).
You can get the base 15" 2012 model for $1,799 (less your student discount). It only comes with 4GB of RAM and I would upgrade that to at least 8GB, but I would not purchase the RAM upgrade from Apple. I would buy third-party RAM from Crucial or OWC and install it yourself (or have someone that is computer-savvy install it for you).
Good luck - call back with any questions. Boy do wish that we had Macs when I was in school...

  • We live in USA and wish to purchase a Macbook Pro computer for our foreign exchange daughter, who has returned to Guatemala.  is it better to buy it here and hand carry or wait and buy it there?  we want to get her warranty and repair benefits

we live in Californina and will be travelling to Guatemala City next month to attend our Foreign Exchange Daughters graduation.  We want to buy her a Macbook Pro as a gift and purchase the warranty/protection coverage for her.  We are concerned she will not be entitled to any Apple Support/warranty by it being purchased in USA but using it and living in Guatemala.
It is better to wait and buy it from a retailer there in Guatemala?

  • Looking to purchase a MacBook Pro - I could use some advice.

    Hello everyone,
First, a little background on my current situation. I recently started a new job working at a high school as a techie. This school has just over a 2:1 ratio of Mac:PC. The college I attend, however, is a 90/10 PC-oriented organization, as well as my education was, so I have had little exposure to the Macintosh or its evolution over the years. However, due to the disappointment of Windows Vista, and my growing appreciation for the Mac OS, I am becoming attached to Apple products. Seeing as I work in a mostly Mac environment, and how much trouble me and my colleague had imaging a computer lab this week, I figure a MacBook would be a perfect asset to myself and my job. As a result, I am currently researching the possibility of purchasing a refurbished MacBook Pro.
Unfortunately, my research has casted some doubts as to the recent validity of Apple's products. I have read various complaints about the MacBook and MacBook Pros. These complaints include such topics as overheating, sharp edges on the trackpads, Magsafe power adapters failing and/or MELTING, faulty display screens, insanely loud fans, rude "Mac Geniuses," and other issues.
I WANT to buy a Mac. I used to think of them as comical and childish (see: rainbow of iMacs), but I now realize they are a fantastic tool. Sure, they're still a corporation like Microsoft, but Apple at least tries to give its customers some freedom and security (this point can be debated, but that is not a discussion for here). And also sure, getting the Mac OS to work on a "PC" is daunting at the least. But the Mac is more than just software. It's the SuperDrives, the thin profiles, the included FireWire 400 and/or 800, and more.
The first and last laptop I bought was an Alienware (yes, I bought into their propaganda...), and it was a disappointment from day one. The battery lasted about an hour while watching a movie. The fans ALWAYS ran, loudly I might add, which got worse as it aged (the BIOS had no fan control settings...). The trackpad was garbage. The computer got extremely hot. Recently, at around Thanksgiving, I believe the power supply failed - this laptop is worth nothing but a paper weight now, since I refuse to pay to have it repaired (it's out of warranty). Basically, I have vowed to never buy from that company again. The most likely company I would buy another laptop from would be Dell, because I have purchased two desktops from them with no serious (better yet, any) issues at all. Yet, with the failings of my Alienware, I am hesitant to purchase another PC laptop. With a PC tower, if you don't like how a part performs, you can replace it reasonably cheap. Not with a laptop, and certainly not with an Apple product. In most cases, especially if you squirm at the thought of voiding your warranty, like me, third-party product replacement is not an option. That's why I want to be reasonably sure an Apple product will remain in acceptable (or at least in a reasonably-costing repairable) condition for many years.
I know you fellow forum readers are not salesmen - you're better. You're actual users of these computers with real life experiences to share. So, please. Take a moment of your time and share your experiences with me. Bust the myths. Disprove the faults. Debunk the words of liars and people-who-may-never-be-satisfied. Deflate the over-emphasis on hardware issues. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
PS: I do have some specific questions, though.
    1. How would you rate the capabilities of the onboard video of the MacBooks in relation to playing today's games? Not super high-end 3D graphical games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3, or Bioshock. I'm talking games like Dawn of War, Homeworld 2, etc. I read on Intel's website the graphics chipset has a stock 64 MB capacity, always taken up by Mac OS (80 MB, according to Apple). However, it can share memory with system RAM up to a total theoretical limit of 256 MB video-devoted memory. How does this compare to, say, the MacBook Pro's dedicated 128 MB Nividia card? Intel claims their chipset works well with 3D applications, but I'm not so sure...
    2. Is a glossy finish on the display really worth the glare, or does the matte finish blur the picture too much? I've briefly used a new MacBook with a glossy finish. In my school's overhead florescent lights, the glare is almost unbearable.
If I think of something else, I will post it.

I've never encountered any of that in the several Mac machines I've worked with/owned. Most of my friends have MacBooks and MacBook Pros, and none of them have even had to call tech support, let alone have major software issues.
A couple of things you should really remember.
    1. These boards make the products look disproportionately faulty. Most of the users on this board are users because something broke or crashed, they went to the Apple tech support page and clicked on the link to the forum. Accordingly, you'll see lots of "OMG APPLE *****!!11//"posts from people who are emotionally torn up about their poor crashed hard disk (and I certainly sympathize). If you surveyed Apple users on the whole, and the University of Michigan did, you'd find they're extremely satisfied. UM's customer satisfaction survey has put Apple as the highest customer satisfaction computer company for something like five straight years.
    2. Problems and glitches do exist, but they're the least here. Yes, some people do get faulty power cords. But not as many as get them with HP, Dell, etc. I've always had at least a few glitchy things with my PCs (I've had several Dells and an Acer), but never with a Mac. My current MBP has shown no faults whatsoever.

I've been impressed with the GeForce graphics chip. 256 MB of VRAM is fine for me, I don't know about heavy duty 3D work, but for basic gaming (AOE, COD 2, Halo , HP) it works fine for me. As a matter of fact, it was either PC World or PC Magazine that marked the MBP the fastest gaming laptop a few months ago. At 144 frames per second, it was their top performer. Apple's spin here.

That's completely a question of personal preference. If I was in an office with can lights all day, I might go for the glossy finish. Since I use my computer in the car quite a lot, though, I went with the matte and I like it. Quite rich and sharp. Especially if you get the high-res option (which I didn't), it's fine.

  • Looking to purchase Mac Pro (dual CPU) for Aperture/Photoshop

My first question is: Will I be able to upgrade the CPU later on? If I were to get the dual 2.26Ghz setup which is currently the base processor (and, the most affordable option), would I be able to purchase the 2.93Ghz CPUs few years down the line and install them?
I certainly know that memory can be upgraded, but I'd like this machine (which, is in itself a considerable expense) to last for at least six years with upgrades.
I currently use 2.16Ghz Core Duo MBP with 2Gb RAM (maximum it can take) and my Aperture and Photoshop have trouble running simultaneously while editing 12 megapixel files from my camera.
    Thanks a million guys!

I came from a MacBook, the very first MacBook ever, also maxed out at 2 GB (shared RAM), so I can completely relate to your frustration.
I'm running PS CS3 and Aperture 2 on the Mac Pro with the dual quads and am quite happy. My XSi also generates 12 MP RAW files. 6 GB of RAM is more than enough to run Aperture and PS simultaneously. I can do things like HDR processing with multiple 16-bit TIFF outputs and process them using masking without quitting Aperture. It's just beautiful how much it can do.
The GT 120 seems to be quite capable of making lots of adjustments in Aperture simultaneously without perceivable lag. For most of my non-studio work, I'm retouching, adjusting wb, colors, levels, enhance, and changing exposure settings all at the same time. The GT 120 seems to keep everything I've been able to throw at it, and I throw a lot. It's even speedy while zoomed in at 100%.
At the Apple store, I played with the single quad-core version and was blown away by it's performance as well. Honestly, I didn't perceive any difference between the dual and the single quad versions as far as performance in Aperture and Photoshop. Of course, with half the RAM, you won't be able to have as many layers. When I used the one at the store, I was so blown away, I was afraid the dual quad version was a waste of money.
I wouldn't count on being able to upgrade the processors later, but my biggest concern is that we won't ever be able to really take advantage of all the power the Mac Pro already offers. When you output from Aperture, it's really not that fast, the machine just spends all it's time waiting for the hard drive anyway. The Mac Pro is a server-grade machine through and through. As a still photographer, I can assure you, you'll be blown away by the power of Nehalem and bummed at your inability to use it anywhere near it's full potential. It'll take YEARS for Intel's consumer-grade processors (like the i7) to catch up with the Xeons, and even then, they probably won't support ECC RAM. And each core can handle two sets of instructions at the same time, so virtually, the dual-quad has 16 cores.
With the amount of focus being placed upon harnessing the power of GPU, the power of the CPU is likely to have less and less impact on the speed of your machine as time passes. If you're worried about the RAM ceiling of the single quad Mac Pro, buy the dual-quad, but I wouldn't worry so much about the clockspeed. You should keep in mind, Aperture can't handle the multiple graphics cards, so I'd get a single GT 120 and consider buying something more substantial later, *after you get Snow Leopard*. Snow Leopard is going to use the GPU in ways we've never seen before and I predict it will be a game-changing release.
I'd also check out the refurbs! Hope this helps!

  • I want to purchase a Macbook Pro overseas for the keyboard layout and set the OS to English, but if I do so, would the keyboard layout also switch to English? Can I set the foreign layout as default?

I would assume that changing the default keyboard so that I can use the proper corresponding one is possible, but I would just like to make sure before I buy one.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Is iMovie/iPhoto/Garageband included when purchasing a MacBook Pro?

Looking at purchasing a MacBook Pro 15 inch (Not the retina one).
Just out of curiosity, is iMovie and iPhoto & other Life11 Programmes/applications included when purchasing a MacBook?
Or, would I have to pay for it & how much?

They are included when purchased new from any store or refurbished from Apple.

  • Where to purchase Adobe CS6 Design Standard for mac? (in the UK).

I'm looking to purchase Adobe CS6 Design Standard for mac for the company I work for (I'm in the IT department).
All the other marketing staff run this version.
I need another copy but it seems it's all been replaced with Creative Cloud.
The finance director is not happy to be paying yearly for this, wants a one off payment for boxed/download version of CS6, so everyone's on the same version.
I've Googled but don't trust any of the online shops I'm finding (could be dodgy copies of the software, might not turn up, etc).
Adobe seem to still sell some CS6 products but only in other countries? (we're in the UK).
    Thanks for reading.

Here you go. The UK price page from the Adobe Store:

After some advice, I am new to Apple and looking to purchase either the MacBook Air 13inch with 256GB and 8GB mem or the MacBook Pro 13inch with retina 256Gb and 8GB mem. I am an assistant principal in a primary school and also studying my masters at university. I don't play computer games and I don't watch movies. I do store photos and videos of my kids and music on iTunes. I also like browsing the net with numerous windows open, check email etc. I am really wanting long battery life as I do a lot of my work on the couch - not close to a PowerPoint. Would the air do the trick or will it soon be outdated as Apple move towards retina display? Both air and pro seem very thin  - almost the same? And not much difference in weight either so both very portable which is also a necessary requirement. Just can't help dreaming about that 12 hour claimed battery life. Any helpful advice/opinions, very much appreciated. Thanks

It's not likely that you'll get 12 hours in reql life. Those benchmarks are set under very strict controlled conditions. Kind of like mileage per gallon claims on cars. If 16GB of ram is an option at all I'd highly recommend you get that. As far as storage 256GB isn't alot, consider storing some things on an external thunderbolt real

Only you can make that determination.  Read the system requirements for both and read the reviews.

  • I just purchased a Macbook, iPad, and iPhone and I am trying to sync my iTunes library from my Windows laptop.  How can I sync my iTunes library to all devices?

I just recently purchased a MacBook Pro (13 inch with Retina display), an iPad Air 2, and an iPhone 6 plus.  Before these purchases, I was using a Windows 7 laptop to manage my iTunes library and iTunes purchases.  I am in need of syncing my iTunes library on my iPod classic (160 GB) with all of my new Apple devices.  How can I sync my iTunes library with all of my new devices?

Devices can only sync to one library at a time. You can, however, have multiple copies of libraries on different computers though it can be tricky making sure they are always synchronized.  You can put your Windows iTunes on your Mac.
Moving a library: Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its sub-folders and files) intact to the other drive.  Hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) and open iTunes.  At the prompt to create or choose a library choose the copied iTunes folder.
When this is to a new computer put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Iam looking at buying a macbook

I am looking into buying a macbook and I need some help. It will be my first Apple. I am very excited but am also a single mom and watching my dollars. I was thinking about getting one on Ebay that is new in box. If I do this can I still buy the ProCare and the One to One service? Is the warranty still available to add on? I am trying to make a smart purchase but also be very cost effective. PLEASE HELP!!!

I have bought my last 3 Macs off of eBay... and you are right, it is much cheaper!
One thing i would advise is to make sure the Paypal protection care is at the $2,000.00 level and not just $200.00! If you get scammed, Paypal will only refund $200.00 if the coverage is $200.00. If the seller you are dealing with is only covered up to $200.00, then i would be very CAREFUL!!!
Buying off ebay does not prevent you from purchasing the Apple extended warranty... and if you look around you will be able to get one for around $175.00. (i bought my first Applecare for $165.00 and the second one for $145.00 but i think i really lucked out both times!)
Apple's One to One service should not be affected by where and how you purchased your laptop, so enjoy your new Macbook and welcome to our side... Oh, get a keyboard protector cos' you never know when an accident might occur and you don't want anything happen to your new MacBook! :o)

    hienn,
Not yet. There was an upgrade page to 10.8.2 for the late 2012 models but it's down now. I have to assume that Apple pulled it because of some bugs. I would look for something next week, more likely than not. In the meantime, the OP should be good with 10.8.1 until the update shows up again.
