I am looking to upgrade RAM

I have the 2.0 GHz Unibody Macbook released in 2008 with 2GB of RAM.
At any time i am using my Mac i have, at the least, iTunes, Mail, Safari and Tweetie open.
I very often use Photoshop CS5, Final Cut Express, Lightroom CS5, iPhoto, iMovie or Photobooth as well.
I know i need to upgrade my RAM but i have never done it before.
How much do you think I need?
what is the best brand?
Best combinations of memory?
And about how much would it probably cost me?

I have the 2.0 GHz Unibody Macbook released in 2008 with 2GB of RAM. I had previous upgraded to 4 GB of RAM (i bought the RAM kit from Crucial). I would like to upgrade to 6GB now. For some reason, crucial scanner does not seem to be working? I checked on the crucial site and they do not offer 6 GB kit. Macsales on the otherhand has a 6 GB kit (4GB +2 GB). Do i need to buy the whole kit ( i already have 2 2GB ram sticks or is it okay if i just replace one of them with a 4GB stick (combined of 6 GB)?
Thank you for the support.

  • Looking to upgrade ram to 16GB

Hello, I've been looking to upgrade my PC's ram for a while. I have one 8GB stick now, DDR3, samsung. I'm hoping to just find another 8Gb DDR3 stick instead of buying two, as I have very little money. I mainly use my PC for gaming, and plan to upgrade my video card too. I don't know much about ram, and was wondering if anyone could help me find CHEAP ram that is 8Gb and is compatible with my PC?

    AlienVibez, welcome to the forum.
Here is the memory recommended by Crucial Memory.  They guaranty that it will work.  If you have questions you can contact their Tech Support.  I would check to assure that it is compatible with your existing 8 GB stick.

  • Looking to upgrad RAM in mid-2010 Macbook

I am looking to add an additional 2GB of RAM in my mid-2010 Macbook or just put 2x2GB of new RAM in.  Can anyone tell me where and what exactly to buy? Thanks

Your model does indeed support 8 GB, even if officially 4 GB only. Now, you must check if you RAM modules are indeed the ones required. In your screnshot, I can see 1 + 1 GB, this must be the original configuration, right?

Sounds just like what was happening with my Alum MB. I took it in and they replaced my battery. It seems to be ok now. I don't know what it is, but my battery was fine before 10.5.6 and the same timeframe of the firmware updates when they came out.
My battery health was jumping around but was fine before all of this happened. Unfortunately at 381 cycles I don't think you have much chance of getting the battery for free. Perhaps you can complain about the battery saying it was fine until 10.5.6 or whatever. Not sure when your computer was made, but perhaps you are eligible for this program: http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/

  • Looking to upgrade my RAM to 8 GB, what should I buy?

This is the laptop I recently purchased to keel me over while I build a desktop over the next few months, my last laptop's Hardrive and Graphics Card burned out. Looking to upgrade the RAM from the measly 4 GB to 8 GB but I am unsure of what I should buy or if I can even upgrade the RAM at all. I've done some research through the HP guide to Upgrading Memory but it is very general. Much appreciation for any help.

  • Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009

    Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
    I thought about RAM:

    Thanks!

" I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did)."
    Check this out:
    http://macintoshhowto.com/repair/back-up-computer.html
Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
    Now about that Crucial drive:

It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
    I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it.

  • Looking for 16GB RAM That is Compatible with Late-2011 17" Macbook Pro

    Hi guys,
I am looking to upgrade the RAM and Hard Drive in my late-2011 17" Macbook Pro. I've already found the hard drive I want to use, but I don't know as much about RAM, and I'm not sure which 16GB (2 x 8GB) kit would be both compatible and give me the best bang for my buck. I am in Canada so any suggestions linking to Canada Computers or NewEgg would be the best! I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks,
    Jacob

    First, goto OWC - https://www.macsales.com/
It has a guide for all things Mac & Memory
Second, get an SSD as it will speed up your computer tremendously.
OWC or Crucial are very good Mac-friendly brands.

  • Macbook pro does not boot after upgrading ram

I have a macbook pro late 2011 which runs with mavericks operating system . I have tried to upgrade my macbook to 8Gb. Macbook does not boot when the two ram slots are filled with 4GB ram but runs well when the slots are filled with 2GB ram. When i try them individually with one slot of 2GB ram and another slot with 4GB they run perfectly which shows status ok in the RAM info. What could be the problem .

Around here, most of us recommend only Crucial and OWC for RAM because it's guaranteed to work with Macs and it's what most of us have. If I were you, I would return the RAM and look at purchasing RAM from either Crucial or OWC. If you can't get their RAM to work then you'll know that there's some trouble with your actual slots.
    Good luck,

  • Looking to upgrade stock 232gb hard drive

From what I can tell, I have a MacBook Pro (black keys, >2008 model) with the following:
    Capacity: 232.89 GB
    Model: FUJITSU MJA2250BH FFS G1
I am looking to upgrade to a larger hard drive (preferably 1tb, but ~750gb is alright too) as this one is filling up quickly.
I do a lot of photoshop/lightroom work on large files (sometimes larger than 100mb) so I'm guessing I want something fast (7200 rpm?). I have 4gb of Ram installed right now, if that makes a difference.
Can anyone reccomend a good hard drive for me? Also, how difficult (as far as tools, technical expertise, etc) would it be for me to install a new hard drive by myself?
    Thanks for the help.

Hybrids include a small SSD that helps speed data transfers increasing the overall throughput of the drive about 10-20% over that of a standard equivalent drive. Go with Seagate or Hitach for drives. I'm not a big lover of WD because too many of their products are not very compatible with Macs.
Your computer is probably out of warranty, but if not then no. It's DIY in the later MBPs. But if you have to do a semi-disassembly (it's not plug and forget) then any damage you may do will not be covered under the warranty.

  • Is anyone having issues with sound after upgrading RAM?

I recently bought a 2009 Mac Mini with 1GB of RAM. Everything was working fine so I decided to upgrade the RAM to make running more apps a little smoother.
I took it to KRCS (an Apple Premium Reseller) and they put in another 1GB stick. I took the MM home and booted it up but no chime. I loaded iTunes and songs wouldn't play. I couldn't even turn the volume up or down.
After taking it back to KRCS they verified all the connections were ok and everything was seated correctly, however the sound still wont work. They ran some hardware diagnostics and they said that it is showing that there is a sound devicde present but it isn't showing any input or output devices once booted in to OS X.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing this? Could it be a firmware issue do you think?
    Cheers,
    James

    Morning peeps
As mentioned I booked my Mac Mini in with an Apple Genius to see if they could shed any light on the problem. So I saw a very helpful guy called James (go figure 8-)) who looked first of all looked to see if there were any reported problems by Apple. He also had a look around the net to see if there were any suggestions but unfortunately this all proved to be fruitless. He then tried booting from a clean drive to see if it was a software issue but this again failed, leaving him a little stumped.
Finally after a few minutes of looking at verious hardware information he decided to look at the RAM as the Mac was reporting the new 1GB stick I had installed was from a different manufacturer. Again no luck and at this point I knew what was comming...
"It doesn't look like I will be able to fix the problem today."
After all his efforts he couldn't seem to solve the issue so the next stange involves replacing some of the hardware. He showed me that he had gone ahead and ordered a new sound board, the ribbin that connects it to the main board and something else which escapes me at the moment, all of which is covered under the waranty.
So after all that the issue still remains. My Mac Mini is at the Apple Store at the moment and is awaiting the new parts to be installed. James was confident that it could be fixed with these new parts, however he did say that if it couldn't be fixed then Apple would replace it with a new one. He also mentioned that they would try and get the RAM upgrade working once the new hardware was fitted, but if that is unsuccessful he is going to give me the RAM back to get a refund at KRCS.
I think I have covered everything there - sorry if I started to ramble a bit
If you need any more information then I would be more than happy to help.
    Cheers,
    James

  • I have an HP Pavilion M8200N DeskTop looking to upgrade it?

I was doing some reason and its not a bad desktop, nothing super crazy but good enough for most of my video editing and photo work. Im looking to upgrade it as the only thing laking is the video card. So can you please tell me what the best video card is to get without upgrading my power supply and spending huge cash, but still a graphics card. As well a link to ram, how much should i put in extra?
Maybe cheap add ons that will help as well! thanks

Here are the specs for the MCP61PM-HM (Nettle2) motherboard installed in your computer. Here is the "Software & Driver Downloads" page for your computer. Your computer is a 64-bit system running a 32-bit Windows Vista OS. HP provides drivers and software for Vista 64-bit for your computer. If you wish to install the maximum 8GB that your computer can use, you will need to replace the 32-bit OS with a 64-bit OS. If you made your HP Recovery Discs, you can use them to install most of the included HP software back on the computer after installing Vista 64-bit. A quick search on this forum should return a method to get a Vista 64-bit installation disc.

  • Upgrading RAM on MacBook Pro 7.1 13"

Hi, I have a 13" MacBook Pro from Mid 2010 - I believe that is the 7.1 model (2.4ghz), and I am looking to upgrade the RAM.
Having had a look through I have seemed to find out that this model can take up to 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1066MHz RAM.
Can someone please confirm if this is correct, and if so can you please advise the best place to purchase such memory (online in the UK)?
    Many thanks for your help.

Officially it supports 8GB of RAM, but you can update to 16, Take a look at this link http://support.apple.com/kb/SP583

    Looking upgrading RAM.
    Had a couple of questions:
Is it a matter of adding or replacing?
    Is there a max?
Is it a farily easy DYI porject?
    Thanks,
    Sid

    Hi:
I have attached the link to your service manual. Page 1-2 states you are already at the max with 2 GB.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035677.pdf
If you know someone who may have a 2 GB PC2 5300 chip, you can remove one of your 1 GB chips and see if it works, and reports 3 GB. If it reports 3 GB, then it would report 4 more than likely.
The chipset supports up to 4 GB of memory, but the BIOS may not allow it, and there are no BIOS release notes that add support for 4 GB of memory, so it would have to be an experiment on your part.
Installing memory is relatively easy. read Chapter 5 of the service manual for how to do it. Specifically chapter 5, starting on Page 5-12. Remember to remove the battery and A/C power before taking anything apart.
