I am new to Upgrading Mac OS's...help please.

Hello
So I have a couple of questions regarding upgrading both my Mac and my Macbook Pro.
First of all, I have 10.5.8 on my Mac, and 10.6.8 on my Macbook.
My first question will be is how do I go about installing 10.7 (Lion) on my Mac which currently has 10.5.8. I could never figure out how to install 10.6.8 onto it, and my Macbook Pro simply came with 10.6 already installed.
Secondly, if I buy OS X Lion in the App store, do I have to buy a copy of it for both my Mac and my Macbook Pro or will it work for both?
Lastly, will I lose everything on my Mac and Macbook Pro when I install OS X Lion? Should I back up all my data beforehand?
Thanks in advance!

First off, make sure that your Mac capable of running Lion (double check the hardware specs). If your MBPro came with 10.6, you're good with that one.
If both computers are registered to the same Apple ID (the one you use to purchase apps and media from the iTunes and Apple App stores), then one purchase will work with both. Once you've bought it on one computer, log into the App store on the other and click on "purchases". The installer app for Lion will be available for download.
As for losing everything on your computers when you upgrade, no, you *shouldn't* lose anything. If all goes according to plan, the install will keep all of your applications, documents, settings and preferences, and you'll boot into the new system with all of the new features, but all of your stuff will work just like it did before. Now, having said that, you should STILL back up your data beforehand... sometimes things go down the tubes for no apparent reason, so you should definitely protect yourself. I upgraded my iMac yesterday, but did so by purchasing a brand new 1.5 terabyte hard drive and installing Lion to it (it was only $79.00 from Seagate, so it's a cheap piece of insurance). I allowed the installer to copy over my settings, documents, and applications. I'm now running Lion on the iMac from the external, and my Snow Leopard install on the internal drive is untouched. If something had gone wrong, I'd have been able to simply boot from the internal drive with no loss of data. Once I'm sure everything is good with the iMac, I'll backup my MacBook and install Lion on it. I'll leave the internal drive on the iMac with the Snow Leopard install in case I need to use an application that doesn't run in Lion. I've got a few that fall into that category, so I need to keep a working install to run them. So far, all is good, but with any new system there are bound to be some weirdnesses and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

    Hi,
Is there an iPhone involved ?
If not, what happens  if you remove the Apple ID on the iPad and then set it in Airplane Mode (allow a couple of minutes at this point) followed by re-adding the Apple ID ?
What, if any error messages are appearing on the Mac when you try to launch the App or Login to the iMessages server ?
Is the Apple ID linked to an iCloud account ?
In Messages 7 (Mountain Lion) this did not seem to be important but it seems it is in Mavericks/Messages 8

Use the manual methods.. but it is possible for TM to wipe the old files in trying to fit into the space.
Try Q16.. but read all the section 14-17

The following link has 2 methods for importing photos to a Mac (not counting Photo Stream). Are you using iPhoto or Image Capture? If you follow the steps in the link for that method, what exactly happens that doesn't allow the upload? iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer

Need to know your Mac model. If it's a PowerPC, the max OS is Leopard 10.5.x. If it's an Intel procesor, you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (for $29) & later to Lion.

  • Should i continue with Pages or get Office Mac 2011? Help please...

I am new to the Mac world and have purchased Pages. I have found i cannot make documents in web layout or with only part of the document in columns like in Word 2007 on PC. I want to use the Apple software, not Windows if possible so please correct me if there is a way to do what i would like. If not should i get Office for Mac or wait for a new version of iWork. I do not want to use free software. My school uses both PC's & Mac. School's mac's use both iWork and Office although Office is preferred. I can cope with exporting in Pages if my problems are easily fixed.
    Thanks
    Rory

Thanks Kenneth that is a cool feature. but now i'll show you the problem with the columns.
Here i have just copied part of a wikipedia article as an example and pasted into Pages.
Now i select the second paragraph
    Go to Columns
Then when i select two columns it puts the entire page in two columns not the selected area.
In Word on PC you can have columns in the selected area without the whole dowcument being in columns.

  • New iPad. No instructions. Help please.

Before I rant let me say, I am a 25 years plus Mac user and advocate.
OK. Now, I just bought an iPad for my sister (part of my ongoing effort to get others using Apple stuff).
I opened the box and found absolutely no instructions - and could not use it at all unless I connected it to a Mac and fired up iTunes.
Q #1: what if I didn't have a Mac (my sister does not).
I got home with it, connected it to my Powerbook G4 and...nothing.
Then I connected it to my Mac Pro and iTunes went to work. I was prompted to update iPod to 4.2.
Eventually it was done and ready but...
Q #2: do I unplug it like I would my iPod?
Q #3: how do I get music on the iPad? Do I use my Mac's iTunes to transfer?
Now here's the big one -
Q #4: Now what? There is no guided tour or anything to help understand how to use this. And in the time it takes me to turn to my Mac looking for help, the iPad screen goes black. I don't know what to do except hit the Home button since touching the screen does nothing. And then when I do that, I see a slider that says "slide to unlock." I figure this is a screen saver setting but I can't find any such thing. I'm in Settings now but not finding much help...AND how do I get out of Settings other than hitting the Home button?
    And so on.
    Q #5: Where in *&#! are instructions/guided tour/help for this great product?
Seriously, yes, I am pretty annoyed, especially since this is a gift for someone who has 25 years less experience than me.
Done ranting. I apologize but do need some help.

Great. this should be pretty painless for you.
OK. Now, I just bought an iPad for my sister (part of my ongoing effort to get others using Apple stuff).
I opened the box and found absolutely no instructions - and could not use it at all unless I connected it to a Mac and fired up iTunes.
The iPad must be synced to a computer in order to activate it and begin using it.
Q #1: what if I didn't have a Mac (my sister does not).
A Windows PC is fine as long as the system meets the requirements which you can find on Apple's website - click on iPad and you can find the info there.
I got home with it, connected it to my Powerbook G4 and...nothing.
It doesn't meet the minimum specs.
Then I connected it to my Mac Pro and iTunes went to work. I was prompted to update iPod to 4.2.
The Mac Pro is meeting the requirements and you obviously have the most current version of iTunes on it as well. The software update is a good thing!
Eventually it was done and ready but...
Q #2: do I unplug it like I would my iPod?
Yes, after you sync, you get the OK to disconnect message in iTunes just like with the iPod Click on the eject icon next to the device name.
Q #3: how do I get music on the iPad? Do I use my Mac's iTunes to transfer?
Yes you do. You sync selected songs, albums, playlists etc. via your iTunes library. And you can purchase music from iTunes directly on the iPad through the pre installed iTunes app.
You are doing the right thing. Tapping the home button will wake the iPad. Then you slide to unlock as described. In the iPad settings, you can select the length of time that the iPad is inactive before it goes to sleep. Tap settings on the home screen, then tap General, the tap Auto lock and you can select the length of time before the iPad locks and goes to the black screen.
    And so on.
    Q #5: Where in *&#! are instructions/guided tour/help for this great product?
Open the Safari app and click on the open book icon at the top. That is the bookmark icon. Go down the list and you will find the iPad user guide in there.
Seriously, yes, I am pretty annoyed, especially since this is a gift for someone who has 25 years less experience than me.
Don't be. Once you both get the hang of it you will love it!
Done ranting. I apologize but do need some help

  • T42 - Vista upgrade - very slow laptop - help please

    Hi
I have installed Vista Home Premium on my T42 (previously had XP Pro) and it is now very, very slow.  Also it seems to have erased everything IBM - ie -Access IBM button not working.
    Type 2373 - f1G, HD 40mb, Memory 500kb.
Do I need to increase hard disk? or memory? or both?
If I choose to reinstall XP Pro, how do I go about it? I do not have the original XP Pro disk and assume it must have been preloaded.
Sorry for the number of questions but I seem to have got myself into a situation over which my expertise is sadly lacking.  Beginning to wish I left well alone.
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Maureen

    Welcome to the forum!
There are several issues at work here:
    a) RAM. You need at least (which is the maximum for your machine, BTW) 2GB for Vista to run properly.
    b) Larger/newer/faster hard disk would also help.
    c) Please be advised that your GPU is NOT supported by Vista and that you'll have to look for modded drivers on the web, and even with them your scores won't be good.
In my opinion, XP is the way to go for your machine. You can call Lenovo and order a set of recovery disks for a nominal fee.
Should you choose to stay with Vista, go to "support and downloads" page on Lenovo's website, put in your model number and start updating and unpacking the drivers...
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    George

  • Buying a new or used Mac Book Pro - help

I hope this is in the right place. I am considering whether to buy a Mac Book Pro - new or used. This is only going to be used for traveling which is only a couple times a year so I wouldn't need a huge amount of hard drive space. I would like to browse the internet, store pictures from my digital camera temporarily while on trips, and watch DVDs. Anyways, I am used to using Mac OS X 10.6.8 but that is old software. What OS do new Mac Book Pros come with? I see ones from 2007 on ebay - how many years are old ones like those going to last on average? How many years for the new MacBooks? I'm unsure whether to go with a brand new Mac Book pro or an older used one and was hoping to get some advice on this.

Snow Leopard is still an excellent OSX and remains as the most efficient from Apple.  If I were in your position, I would only consider MBPs from 2010 or newer (Excluding the 15" 2010 which has GPU issues).  Any 13" model should meet your requirements and will accept any OSX that is available.
For second hand models, look for pricing on comparable models on e-bay and Craig's List.  If you want a new one, consider the refurbished section in the online Apple store.  You can save a couple hundred dollars that way.
    Ciao.

  • New to the Mac - I need help

I finally saw the light yesterday, I bought a MacBook Pro. I returned my newly acquired toshiba with vista (after having to restart several times a day in one week) and drove straight to the apple store.
    Now my question.
How do I transfer my saved AOL e-mails stored in my "older" pc to my AOL mac. I cant seem to locate the file that contains saved messages in the AOL mac.

If they are still on the AOL server (which they should be) then like this:
