I am not a techie. How do I rid myself of Bing?

I have not requested, do not like, and do not want BING. Is there a safe and simple way to rid myself of this unwanted thing?

To revert to Google as your preferred search engine, please do the following.<br><br>
* In the location bar, type '''about:config''' and hit Enter.<br><br>
* In the filter at the top, type: '''keyword.URL'''<br><br>
* Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q=<br><br>
The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.
'''To reset your home page, do the following'''.<br><br>
* Go to the site you want to set as your homepage.<br><br>
* Click the orange Firefox button and go to '''Options '''| '''Options '''| '''General''' <br><br>
* Make sure it says "''Show My Homepage''" in the first dropdown menu.<br><br>
* Click the button called "'''Use Current Pages'''" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.<br><br>

  • Imac will not see my hard drive on start up, wants to start from network start up disk that does not exist. How to get rid of it? So there is just one choice / my hard drive.

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • How Do I Rid Myself Of This File?

I made the mistake of downloading the file sharing program Aquisition. Upon realizing that is was a pay program I attempted to delete it. However, I cannot do so. I never installed it, yet when I attempt to empty the trash it says that the program is in use yet I have never installed it. I've only download the dmg file. I want this off my system, how can I do it?

1st up, in my opinion, acquisition is worth the cash! But is even of use running unregistered.
It doesn't really install though, i believe it's just one of thoes apps that you just copy off from the .dmg. Sounds to me like you may have failed to copy the application from the .dmg to applications folder prior to launching it. You need to make sure you have definitely quit aquisition before ejecting the .dmg from your desktop, if you are still running it you will not be able to eject. Once ejected you will have effectively uninstalled it! Because you may never have had it installed in the first place!
Alternatively you may have copied the app straight from the .dmg into your dock. Similar applies though, when you launch it would automatically mount the .dmg and you would again be running the app from the .dmg. Ensure it is quit, throw from dock, eject the .dmg = GONE!
    cheersnow.

  • How do I rid myself of the "english version" notice and subsequent block of opening iTunes on a new iTunes 10.6 update without altering my current iTunes folder?

I just updated iTunes to version 10.6 on my 10.6.8 OS X Mac Book Pro and am getting the old "english version" prompt.
This version of iTunes has not been correctly localized for this language. Please run the english version
Yes, that's right, I cannot open iTunes. When I attempt to open it a popup with the above-quoted text appears and the opening process terminates.
There were threads on this years ago as I recall and I've revisited them. They don't address the present question and I think those thread focused mainly on iTunes version 9 and/or earlier versions.
    Steps taken thus far:
I removed the iTunes app from the apps folder and deleted it.
         I have also re-downloaded iTunes 10.6.
I have NOT yet attempted to re-install.
My question is: when I reinstall must I do anything with my ~/Music/iTunes folder to protect its contents from the install process? Or can I leave it alone and just re-install the app without suffering any overwrite or screwups of the ~/Music/iTunes folder or anything therein?
Notes: installed from an English language computer set to English language and inside the continental US.
Already deleted the app file from the Applications folder.

    Solved my own problem.
For the record, fixing iTunes without moving or copying the ~/Music/iTunes folder can be done if you have your iTunes.app file backed up with Time Machine.
Just delete the newly installed iTunes.app file and then restore the iTunes.app file that existed before the update that borked the install.
That's it. iTunes opened right back up and accessed my old data like nothing ever happened. No moving or copying of hundreds of gigabytes of music data needed.

  • How to get rid of this bing search toolbar

it's the bing toolbar keeps coming up, I think it is just since I did a reset, again trying to reduce popups that the addons here never seem to fully eliminate on this laptop running windows 7

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc.
please go to the firefox ''menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc).
<br>also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.
<br>finally, run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • I have a Trojan horse virus in my iPad 2 , my iPhone, and my desktop pc. My antivirus from my desktop got rid of it on my PC, how do I rid it from my IPad , and phone??

I know I am not supposed to get a virus on apple products , but here I am. How do I rid myself of it. ??? How did  I get it in the fist place? Does apple make virus protection???if so where and how do I get it?

    So let me understand this.
Not only are you the first person to have discovered a virus for Mac OS X, but this is also a miracle type of virus that can also be cross-compatible not just from a desktop, but also across both the iPad and even iPhone too?  Ammazing.
Oh wait, better yet, this magical virus is even capable of working in both Microsoft windows environments, AND mac os X environments, AND iOS environments!
What an ammazing feat instead! That author of the virus deserves the nobel prize of the century award I would think!
However, I would first try to use a tiny bit of logic and reasoning before jumping to conclusions about magical viruses here. Just because something tells you a man has walked on water, doesn't mean it's really possible.

When I try to update my apps, and old email address appears, how I get rid of it?  I am not tech savvy at all!

This is happening because they were purchased with your older Apple ID.  Apps and there updates are permanently tied to the Apple ID used to purchase them, regardless of the ID on your phone in Settings>Store.  The only way to stop the prompt for your older ID would be to delete these apps from your phone.

  • TS1832 I can't open pages anymore. Does anyone know how to fix it. I am not a Tech. Savvy person so the more basic the answer the better

Help! I am not a tech savvy person and I am trying to work on a resume and I can no longer open pages. The dialogue box just keeps telling me my current version is not compatible. I have iwork09' and Mac OSX 10.6.8. Any ideas how to fix it.

    You can do the following:
Try Trashing the Preferences files for Pages 09'.
To do that go to Finder> User Directory (which should be identified with your name i.e. johndoe in the finder's sidebar. See image below)> Library> Preferences. Look for a file that mentions pages and ends with the .plist suffix. The filename should look like pages.plist or "com.apple.pages.plist"
Image of User Directory folder in Finder:
Trash the preference file and reopen the Pages Application.
    Hope this helps!

I am looking at buying a MacBook Air over the Pro mainly for the 12 hour battery. Just wondering if battery is compromised by upgrading to 8mb and upgrading to I7 Intel dual core. I am not very tech savvy so apologies if dumb question

If both computers were configured identically, then they would both lose the same amount of battery life with respect to the same starting configuration - comparing apple to apples. I don't know how much the added RAM, etc. would reduce battery life, but it would be less for both models.
Battery life is a tricky subject because most mfgr.s like to suggest as long a life as possible, but often do so under a set of conditions that are not common to most users. Apple is no different. Their computers do have good battery life, however. But not likely as long as what is in the ads for the typical user.

  • MacBook pro does not start. How can I back to Mac OS X Lion?

I have a MacBook Pro. On my MacBook i made three partition, then I installed window 8. After that I started windos and try to delete third partition by Administrator tool from windows operating system. After that my MacBook does not start. How can I back to Mac OS X Lion?
After that I again install windows 8 from a DVD. Windows start well, but I can not start Mac OS system, may be it was 10.6.  Sever times I tried to install OS X Lion 10.7 thought DVD, I could not. On MacBook I have a lot of important data.
What can I do. I want to a complete suggestion. Please help me to solve the problem.
My MacBook Pro model no. A1286.

You installed Windows improperly the result of which was to wipe out the bootloader for OS X. You can give this a try:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the OS X disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
If you are still unable to boot from the OS X volume then you will need to reinstall OS X:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
This will destroy the Windows bootloader so you cannot boot into Windows. The solution is to remove all the partitions on the drive except the OS X partition, then expand the OS X partition to take up the entire drive.
Use Boot Camp Assistant in the Utilities folder to create a Windows partition on which you can install Windows. You cannot have any other partitions on the drive besides these two.
Now given all the above you may be able to install a third-party bootloader that would work with the setup you now have: Boot Runner 1.4.

  • I have a device that shows up in my airplay device list on my iMac, and my phone.  This device does not exist.  How do I get it out of the list? I would like to drop it before I add new airplay devices to my network.

I have a device that shows up in my airplay device list in iTunes, and on my iPhone that does not exist.  How do I delete it? I have OS X 10.10.1 on my iMac, and iOS 8.1.2 on my iPhone 5.  I would like to get it out before I add new airplay devices to my network.

I called Apple tech support.  The device turns out to be a WiFi extender.  I never would have guessed that the extender would show up on the list since I wouldn't think of it as an airplay device, and in the list, it shows a little speaker icon.  In the process of talking with Apple, I gained a greater understanding of how airplay works.
It turns out that there is no stored list of devices in a file on the mac, or anywhere else.  I have seen a lot of traffic on the web from people trying to modify this list, but there isn't one.  iTunes, and other devices simply poll the network for airplay devices from time to time.
    Have a very happy holiday!
I would like to get rid of "just give me the aster, and stop wasting my time", and replace it with my name.  The Apple tech support guy never saw that before.  Just my luck.
