I am not able to access gmail. Error reading -The proxy server is refusing connections. Please help

I get the attached error message when trying to access my gmail account "The proxy server is refusing connections. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections. The problem started today. No issues before.
Second problem although less of a concern - I am using Firefox 16.0.2.I tried to update to latest version and got the following message " ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved"
I can still access my gmail account though my IPAD

hello, i've tried it with a fresh copy of a catalan firefox & it's showing up as expected for me...
please try if it's the same when you launch firefox in safemode once (then it might be an issue with an extension hiding this setting) or else try a reset of firefox.

"The proxy server is refusing connections"
I believe the update caused this error EVERYTIME I open up firefox. I already know how to disable it since I looked it up. I went to Tools> Options> Advance> Network> Settings> and then the four options including "No proxy" which I've chosen so far. I have tried all four options (except manual, because this causes the error), and every one, but manual, solves it. But my real problem is that every time I close and open up firefox again, the option resets back to "Manual proxy configuration" and I have to choose "no proxy" again.
I opened up Safari to see if it works, and it does work. I think only firefox is affected with the error. I also tried re-installing firefox but didn't work.

Well, the problem is no longer there.. I don't know what I did, and I don't even think I did anything after giving up and waiting for an answer. But here's what is on user file: user_pref("yahoo.homepage.dontask", true);user_pref("network.protocol-handler.warn-external.dnupdate", false);"
Now I have a different problem.. My firefox no longer looks like the way I customized it before. It's bare and minimal.. not too sure if this is the default look, but that doesn't bother me much. The prob is after that changed, I can't seem to view youtube or dailymotion videos anymore on firefox. Video viewing is working on Google Chrome, however. It asked me to update my adobe flash player to view, but I already did. What should I call my previous problem? And should I post this new problem in a different thread?

• On start up, get error message "The proxy server is refusing connections". Have dial up and no network. Changed my dial up from Localnet, which I uninstalled on my computer, to free dial up. Explorer works, but Firefox just gives me this error message.

Nothing else to add.

Hi there,
You're running an old version of Safari. Before troubleshooting, try updating it to the latest version: 6.0. You can do this by clicking the Apple logo in the top left, then clicking Software update.
You can also update to the latest version of OS X, 10.8 Mountain Lion, from the Mac App Store for $19.99, which will automatically install Safari 6 as well, but this isn't essential, only reccomended.
Thanks, let me know if the update helps,
Nathan

• Updated to firefox 3.6.6 on laptop and now it can't acces the net "The proxy server is refusing connections" I've restarted twice. My other computer in home works fine. Just not laptop on Network/WiFi

Can't access the web on lap. It's networked form main computer. The problem started just after I downloaded/updated to Firefox 3.6.6. That may be a coincidence. I get "The proxy server is refusing connections". Restarts don't help. My main computer is fine. I didn't update it.
== This happened ==
Just once or twice
== just after an update to 3.6.6

Firefox 3.6.6 made a change in prefs to use system proxy settings.
Check your proxy / network setting in Windows and change it to No Proxy, if you don't use a proxy.
Internet Options > Connections in the Windows Control Panel.

• Firefox will not open. it says to proxy server is refusing connections. please advise

firefox will not open. the window says that the proxy server is refusing connections.

go to '''TOOLS''' then '''OPTIONS''' then '''ADVANCED''' then '''NETWORK''' tab then '''SETTINGS''' tab and '''select the options NO PROXY''' click '''OK''' and '''OK''' again in the next screen. With that you have disabled the proxy settings.
if you like to '''not''' disable the proxy settings choose :
'''Auto-detect proxy settings for this network'''
thank you

HI
First of all are you using any proxy for internet access. If you do nat have a proxy, try to change the settings to No proxy.

• Can't launch or access Firefox. Get msg = Proxy Server is refusing connections.

Existing Firefox Icon & Shortcut stopped working. Have Dell W/ Vista.

Proxy Server Refusing Connections
When surfing via Firefox, you may sometimes encounter such a problem - "proxy server refusing connections", Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connection. Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct. Then Firefox rejects to connect to the Internet. Even though you have not made any proxy settings for your Firefox you may also get this error information. Perhaps you have started to get this annoying message everytime you try to use Firefox.
This is because Firefox has somehow changed its proxy settings automatically, for example, maybe it has imported proxy settings from other browsers such as Internet Explorer or some others. So it's easy to fix, what you need to do is just modify the proxy settings of Firefox manually and here's how -
Click "Tools" -> "Options";
Click "Network";
Click "Connection" -> "Settings";
Select "No proxy";
Click "OK"

• I get a message that says "The proxy server is refusing connections" that will not allow me to use the internet

I am attempting to connect my laptop to my home network. The internet connection works (I loaded up cmd and pinged yahoo with good results). But it is telling me that "Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections."

In Firefox 3.6.4 and later the default connection settings have been changed to "Use the system proxy settings".
See "Firefox connection settings" in [[Server not found]]
You can find the connection settings in "Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection"
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select No Proxy

• "Proxy server is refusing connections" error message, fixed with Network Settings but won't save my preferences. Have tried everything!

I always have to go
Firefox>Option>Network>Settings>Select Auto-Detect Proxy
Every time I open firefox.
I read the "Preferences Not Saved" Help but I don't have a User file in my Containing Folder, so I couldn't change that.
Deleted my prefs.js files, but when it automatically made a new one it was still stuck on "Manual Proxy Settings" which leads to the "Proxy server is refusing connections" error.
Any new ideas? Please?

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• My Firefox no longer works, it will not go to any website and offers the message "The proxy server is rejecting connections". I had the same problem in IExplorer but was able to fix it. I did not choose a proxy server, ever. How do I fix this in Firefox?

I changed out my wireless router, from a Linksys to a Netgear. Everything seemed to work fine, but shortly afterward Firefox could not be used to find any websites, and gave me the message above. The same happened with Internet Explorer, but a tech representative for my ISP directed me to the page where "proxy server" was incorrectly checked and it fixed the problem. I don't know where to go in Firefox to find the same or a similar page. My laptop continued to work fine for some time after, but eventually developed the same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, with no luck, and all desktop shortcuts based on Firefox are inoperative. I just keep getting the message that the proxy server is rejecting connections. Since I did not select a proxy server, I don't know how to deselect it.

No idea what "tried everything" means.
Here is how you troubleshoot a password problem.
Go to your email providers web mail page and verify that you have a working username and password by logging into your account there. If you cannot log in there, look for the link to reset your password. Your email password is administered with your email provider.
Once you have a working password you need to remove any stored passwords in Thunderbird and replace with the new, working password.
From the menu bar select''' Tools-Options-Security-Passwords-Stored Passwords'''
Remove the passwords for the problem account. Close Thunderbird and restart it. You will be asked for a password. Enter the new password.
No menu bar with Tools? Press the '''alt '''key.
FYI: Thunderbird settings are stored in a different file from the program. Removing the program and reinstalling just keeps you busy for a little while and rarely fixes anything. As you have seen the old settings are picked up when Thunderbird is reinstalled.
