I am not able to view some PDF files in Safari

When I try to view a link to a PDF file using Safari in Mavericks I am told to open Adobe Acrobat. I do not have that and do not want to buy it. If I use Firefox I can view the PDF.
Here is an example of the message I get from Safari:

You need to launch the Adobe Reader app from your Applications folder and accept the license agreement.
The message is generic and refers to Acrobat or Reader as "Acrobat".
You don't see that with Firefox because it has its own PDFJSViewer built in.

Yes I do have both reader and acrobat, and yes I have installed a new
version of Acrobat. I have a 4 or 5 year old macbook and am using safari.
This is a relatively new problem that happened in the past 2 months.

Not able to view flash streaming files on safari

I have this problem that safari will not play any flash based videos, it plays quicktime with no problems. I have firefox installed and this plays flash based videos with no problems.
I have installed Flash 9 all ok. I checked safari preferences and all ticked under web content. I checked Quiktime Mime and under misc. it is not checked however I do check this (tick) and it seems to not stay ticked.
I would appreciate any advice.

The Misc. Mime setting ought to remain unchecked. Also, in the System Preferences>QuickTime advanced panel, "enable flash" ought to be checked.

I was combining different types of files into a single PDF. Some of them were excel spreadsheets and I had set the print areas in each file. When I cleared the print area the problem stopped. So I am assuming that had something to do with it. Though I am not sure.
The strange thing was that I was able to open the excel source documents after creating the faulty PDF but some of the MS word source documents also had "access denied" status. I still cannot figure that part out.

Finder not able to view folders and files on EHD after updating to OS X 10.9.4

I can see still see 'Hitachi' in the 'Devices' Sidebar, but I am not able to view folders and files on this Hitachi XL2000 2TB FAT32 Hard Drive (EHD) that is USB connected to the iMac below.
Late 2013 Apple iMac (27-inch Display 2560 x 1440), 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz, 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB, 512GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2GB GDDR5, Magic Trackpad, Apple Wireless Keyboard and OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks
All was fine until I updated from OS X 10.9.3 to 10.9.4 earlier this week, so now when I double-click on 'Hitachi' it just loads and loads with nothing happening and never displays the folder and file contents of the EHD.
Also, confirmed that Hitachi EHD has been removed from Spotlight indexing per System Preferences > Privacy > + > Hitachi and it was so this does not seem to be an indexing issue.
I have used OnyX and Apple Disk Utilities unsuccessfully to try and fix this problem.
Interestingly, Backblaze online backup still sees the EHD and connecting this EHD to a Win 8.1 PC also sees the EHD.
Further, I ran the commands below in 'Terminal' to make sure the drive was visible and got the following results which shows that the EHD is not hidden.
iMac:Applications john$ chflags nohidden /Volumes/Hitachi/
iMac:Applications john$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/Hitachi/
directory: "/Volumes/HITACHI"

Finally, I installed XtraFinder and am still not able to see the contents of the EHD, but when I installed OmniDiskSweeper I can navigate the EHD folder tree with no problems and can see the contents of the EHD, but when I try and open up a file it opens Finder which loads and loads and nothing happens.

Apple Support was quite helpful, but in the end I will wait to do a clean install of OS X Yosemite which is due in the Fall and not try and fix OS X 10.9.4 Mavericks.
It turns out that I run backups on my '/Users/john/Library' and the size of this folder before the 10.9.4 update was 1.07 GB and after the update it is 806.9 MB which is baffling, but in the end all of these problems should be resolved with a clean install of OS X Yosemite.
One lesson learned for the future is that I will wait on installing an update until it has been in the wild for awhile as a quick OS X Mavericks Finder Problem search and similar searches show there could be an issue.

Part of the problem in helping is likely that there is no program Adobe -- that is the company name. You are in the Acrobat forum, but it sounds like you have subscribed to Export PDF or such, a different program. The subscription to Acrobat is currently $19.99 per month.

Cannot print or view some pdf files

Hi there,
Have a recent issue of not being able to open or print some pdf files. These file can be viewed on-line at their source with Safari however cannot be printed (printer display shows the page is blank). When I save them on desktop and try to re-print, there is an error message appearing on the screen stating the file is damaged and could not be repaired. Is there any solution out there to fix this?

Open Adobe Acrobat
Click on Edit, click on Preferences on the drop down menu,
Click on Internet under Categories
Under Web Browser Options, remove the check from the box beside Display PDF in browser
Click on OK
Close Adobe Acrobat and go back to open the .pdf file trying to be viewed.

Can't download/view "some" pdf files.

I once had Adobe Reader which caused some problems. I moved it to trash. I also trashed the Adobe Reader Internet Plug-in in the Library. I still can't open some pdf files (e.g., bank monthly statements). A window opens showing the statement (which should be pdf), but when I try to save: File>Save, I get a window that opens that includes: "Export As: Statement.html" and "Format: Page Source." The Format selection feature opens a pulldown menu that allows "Web Archeive" as the only other choice.
My Library Plug-ins still show :
Is there anything else here that I need to delete? How is it that I can still download some pdf files, view them, and save them? This problem is happening on the monthly statements for a couple of financial institutions and not others!

This is so strange. I had also posted the same issues to my financial institutions and one of them just responded:
". . . this issue began with an update for Preview from Apple. We have discovered a work-around. If you Ctrl-click on the statement you would like to open (ex. January 2012), and choose "Open Link in New Window", it should open the way you are used to."
This worked! After Ctrl-clicking the window, it opens another window that now allows saving or printing the file as pdf! I can't believe Apple is leaving these issues hanging there.

Quicktime 7 not able to view mpeg-4 file

I recently had quicktime 7 install on my machine. For some reason i was not able to view mpeg-4. I cannot watch the video but i can hear the sound. I think the file is good, because i can watch on another computer. Try to reinstall, no help. Download divx and ffdshow encoder, no help either. p.s i can watch quicktime 7 with .mov file. I hope someone can help me with this. Maybe i can do a clear uninstall on the machine? Any sugguestion?

Not able to open a PDF file in Creative Cloud Illustrator. It shows missing links and so forth

I'm working on CS5 and saving my AI files as PDF. This is all for print, I have created the outlines, and flattened transparency between an image I had placed in on the PDF. My CreativeCLoud AI is not able to open the PDF. It shows that it is missing links. How do I fix this?

Only able to view some PDFs on black berry

I able to view pdf files that are created with the info in the PDF tab under Properties thats states:
PDF Producer: Acrobat Distiller 8.1.0 (Macintosh)
PDF version: 1.4
I receive a PDF with this Info and it does not work:
PDF Producer: Adobe PDF library 8.00
PDF version: 1.6
I looks like pdfs that where are an older version seem to work but newer ones do not. I know the one that works was created by Distiller.
The PDFs also contain images and the one that is not working correctly displays the text but not the image.

I not exactly sure what you mean? Illustrator was used to save as a pdf.
Also our Blackberry Enterprise server was upgraded over the weekend to 4.1.5 and I am now able to open pdf versions up to 1.7. I haven't been able to find anything in blackberry's documentation that states it supports any versions higher then 1.4 but it is now working.

Can not copy spaces from some pdf file

I'm trying to copy some text from the above pdf file (with mouse and ctrl-C). But many spaces are missing (e.g., the following text). Is it a problem with acrobat. Or it is a problem with the pdf file. I use pdftotext to conver the pdf file to a text file. The text file looks fine. Therefore, I suspect it is a bug in Acrobat. But I'm not completely. Could you please take a look and let me know what the problem is and how to fix it? Thanks!

It appears that the PDF creation process was deliberately intended to make repurpose of content difficult.
--| The table description/caption uses "Calibri" font having non-standard lookup tables.

IE Browser not able to display a PDF file within the Browser window ...

Hello acrobat experts!
I'm now writing a plugin for the acrobat. According to my customer requirements, the pdf file is expected to be displayed within the MS IE
browser widows. It worked within adobe Reader and Acrobat 7.0.x.
Now I wanted to test my plugin against version adobe Reader and Acrobat
8.0, 8.1.0, 8.1.1. Unfortunately, I got a strange behavior: pdf files are
being diplayed in seperate windows, i.e. the IE browser window is empty
and white blanked!
- (Un)check "Display PDF in browser" option and close the window
didn't help!
- I tried also to upgrade gradually and after each upgrade checked if the
problem persists --> I had the same behavoir after each update:
7.0.5 -> 8.0; 8.0 --> 8.1.0; 8.1.0 --> 8.1.1
- In some google - forums I found out that the following DLL's may be
missing:
Acropdf.dll, Acroiehelper.dll,Gbdetect.dll and Pdfshell.dll
i got these dll's, put them into the activeX directory, but still I
have the same problem
You guys, do you have useful links / tips for me? Is this a known bug
in the acrobat / Reader 8.0, 8.1.0, 8.1.1?
By the it works fine within firefox!
Further info about user SW versions:

no, because my customer is using the IE 6. According to the system
requirements all these Acrobat/Reader versions should also run
properly under IE 6 http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3796
I have a look in IE >> manage- add-ons and got the following Add-ons
for adobe
- Adobe PDF
- Adobe PDF Conversion Tool helper
both are enabled!
Do I need more?
