I am on a mac with Leapoard 10.5.8. How do I install bootcamp?
So... I have recently delved into recreational gameing, and have very quickly found out that there arent very many games compatible on the Mac software. Ive asked around a bit, and everyone suggests Apple Bootcamp. Ive taken a look around on the apple bootcamp site, and its not very informative on what I need to download for my software version (10.5.8 snow leopard, on a old iMac), and what I need to do once I actually have the download.
Any tips for me?
Also, if needed I can post more of my computers stats.
When selecting Windows games be sure to look at the requirements regarding memory (RAM) processor speed, and graphics card specs. There is usually a minimal requirement list and a recommended list. Sorry to say but you will not be happy playing with the minimal requirements.
From MacTracker I get the following specs for a late 2006 iMac 17".
Processor
Intel Core 2 Duo (T5600) ("Merom")
Processor Speed
1.83 GHz
Storage
160 GB 7200-rpm
Maximum Memory
2.0 GB
Graphics Card
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950
You can probably play some older games that don't have intensive graphic needs but new games might not even install. This is with Boot Camp which runs natively.
In general I have found that 2 or at best 3 years of age is all one can expect of a computer to be able to play the newer stuff. If you can't afford a new Mac then perhaps look at the PC gaming computers as they are cheap by comparison and can be upgraded.

Late in August 2011 I took delivery of a new 27" iMac with Lion preinstalled. I need to run Windows as well. Following Apple's written suggestion, I printed off the then current 12 pages of the document "Bootcamp Installation & Setup Guide" which clearly stated that the hard drive you were going to install on had to have on it, before install, a maximum of one partition. Using finder and disk utility I determined that there was only one partition. Unbeknownst to me, there was (is) an additional hidden (from those two pieces of software) partition on the disk. As of machines delivered new with Lion preinstalled, Apple has begun to include a "recovery partition". In that partition there is a copy of the software necessary to reinstall Lion via a download from the Apple App Store. Not knowing the partition was there, I cranked up "Bootcamp Assistant" which nicely offered to repartition my hard drive creating a "Bootcamp Partition" in addition to the existing. I told it how big to make each and hit the do it button, subsequently destroying my operating system. Oh, it very nicely told me, after the damage was done, how many partitions were REALLY on the disk and that I could not install Bootcamp cause there were too many partitions.
Luckily the the Recovery Partition, which at that point I knew existed, was not harmed and after doing some research on another compter, I used it to once again download Lion from the App Store and reinstall. So, I have recovered but am still stuck with the problem: how do I install Bootcamp in this new environment?First you need to seriously back up your Mac.
A clone is an exact duplicate of your existing Mac HDD. Merely copying and pasting a drive will not make a bootable backup. In case of problems you can boot from an Ext HDD clone and use the utilities to repair, reformat, or clone the Ext HDD back to the internal Mac HDD. While Time machine back ups are easy you can not boot from it. The best thing to have for any kind of problem is a bootable clone backup on an external drive. Some even have two external backup drives in case one fails. There are two good apps for cloning named SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner.
In dealing with the recovery partition a simple approach is to clone the Mac partition to an external disk then re-partition the Mac to a single partition (GUID partition table) . Then clone the external disk clone back to the Mac. You will now have only one Partition and Boot Camp assistant sould not object.
Some have recommended getting rid of the recovery partition while others have advised not to do this. If you have the Lion USB Thumb Drive you do not need a recovery partition so can discard it without concern. There is another way to get rid of the recovery partition if you decide to do it but first be sure to have a backup of your Mac ( I know I sound like a nagging mom but many dead computers have been saved by this simple precaution).
Use Disk Utility.
1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply. -
I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -

my mac mini build is 11G56 and mac osx is 10.7.5 how can i install latest mac 10.8 and above
Simply purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store and it will begin installation after the download is complete. Note that it's a large download, about 4.5GB, so you should have a good Internet connection..
However... if I were you, I would just wait another month or so until Apple releases Mavericks - the 'latest' announced version of OS X -> http://www.apple.com/osx/preview/.
No need to pay for two upgrades in a months (or so) time...

If we bought a mac with OS X 10.6.6 and my sister has a mac with OS X 10.5.8, can we use the install DVD that came with the newer one to put OS X 10.6.6 on hers? Would it work? Does it erase everything? Is that even legal?
Thank you for any help!It won't work.

I bought a new mac including 10.8 Mountain Lion. (How) can I now install 10.8 on my older iMac (mid-2011) which came with 10.6?
You will need to buy it at the app store. The license for the pre-installed OS on your new machine is only for that machine. Only OS's purchased from the app store can be installed on more than one machine (as long as you own it).

I want to buy a used Mac for video editing and there are alot of them with FCPX and other software already installed. If I buy one of these will I be able to do future updates to the software?
If they were downloaded from the Mac App store, no. In fact, the licenses are not transferable. Technically, it's not legal to sell you the machine with apps from the Mac App store still installed.

hi...i have a macbook pro with a forgotten efi password.i want to remove it for install a new OS....please help me!!
No. The only people that can help you are at an Apple store.
Just how in the world did you forget a Boot EFI password?
Next time you buy a computer don't set a EFI/BOIS password. If you must WRITE IT DOWN so you can always refer to it. -
How do I install bootcamp on the new drive that I installed with the dvd drive adapter
Hello, I have a macbook pro mid 2012 13 inch, I have just earned some money, enough to buy a SSD, and I happily went to the store and bought a samsung evo 840 120gb SSD. My plan was to clean install windows 8.1 on the SSD, I already had bootcamp on the 500GB HDD with windows 8 that came with the mac, so I backed up the important files from the windows partition. I deleted the partition, and restored it to the mac's partition (which I was going to partition again after the windows installation is complete for the storage for my windows partition) I made a installation usb with the iso I have made with bootcamp assistant, and waited. After that was done I restarted my computer holding the option key, then I booted into the EFI boot partition, and went through the process, entered the serial key, and agreed the thing, and then when I did the format it said it couldn't do it, so I took it out put it in an external hard-drive case, then I plugged it into my windows 8 laptop, then I opened command prompt, then I typed "diskpart", then after the administrator thing popped up, I clicked yes, then in the diskpart prompt, I typed in "list disk", and my SSD was disk 1, so I did "select disk 1" then I typed "clean" Then I went into the drive manager, then a thing popped up saying which one would I choose between MBR or GPT so I selected GPT, then made a new NTFS partition on the SSD, then took it out, then I popped it back in then went through the installation, until the actual installing part where after copying files is done, this pops up "Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D" So I downloaded a torrent because I had thought that this was corrupted, and downloaded a torrent from a website, and downloaded the iso, and I tried and the same error, again and again of taking out the drive from my computer to format it and putting it back in again (since there was some files made on the SSD) so I had decided that I would download a windows 8 torrent, then I did then it couldn't even start, so I want to install windows 8.1 on my macbook pro, on a separate drive in the the DVD cage (not external, internal), would there be any way to do it, please help!

how can i open/install .exe files? i' am having trouble installing this CD for school
Run Windows or find a Mac version of the software or buy a Windows computer.
Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive. -
Hi,
the above question refers also to the photos I have saved - do I just save them to a USB memory/Portable HDD and move them to the new MAC?
Many thanks
ChenJdownload the mac installation file when you are ready. don't forget to deactivate (help>deactivate) on your pc if you'll no longer need lr on your pc.

Re-installing LR license on new mac with no optical drive
originally purchased LR2 with CD copy, have subsequently upgraded online to LR3 and LR4 using PC.
have now purchsed new mac with no optical drive, so how do I get LR4 reinstalled?
any upgrade licenses require you to have the original full license first installed.any upgrade licenses require you to have the original full license first installed.
Used to be the case but no longer. Adobe's process is now much simpler.
All software versions (whether full or upgrades) include the full program code. The serial number you enter tells the installer if it's an upgrade or a full version.
Download the Lightroom 4.4.1 trial from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5599
Install it then enter your LR 4 serial number. The installer will then ask for an earlier version serial. Enter your LR3 serial and the install will complete. -
Website on my Mac with Sqlite database
I'm attempting to build a prototype website on my Mac with a Sqlite database but how do I set up php to communicate with Sqlite.
I"m running OS 10.4.11 and Sqlite 3. I've set the sharing option to activate Apache which works with a small webpage, but I cannot determine if php is even installed on this machine. I've put a phpinfo statement in the webpage which produces no output.I've installed PHP 5 in the last month on my Tiger 10.4.11.
Here is the link to the instructions I used. See link to install package on this page.
http://maestric.com/doc/mac/upgrade_php5_tiger
I don't think you have to do any of the stuff recommended on that page.
If you want to get error messages in php, you do need to modify the php.ini.
Here is the diff output of the changes that I made. Confusing to read, I know. First set is new; second set is old etc.
