I am on an iMac Intel with 10.6.8 networked to iMac PPC G5

I have an old iMac G5 running 10.5.7 which has several old applications on it (PhotoShop, Illustrator).  It is networked to my newer computer, an iMac Intel running Snow Leopard.  Can I update to Lion  on the Intel and still access the old applications on the G5 ?  I have not kept up very well since I retired - and buying all new software is out of the question.  Of course it is simple enough to just use the G5 when I do one thing and the Intel when I do another.  I like to know before I start what to expect.  Thanks for any input.

What error message ar eyou getting. Why do you say it will not allow you to download?
Verify you meet all the system requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core processor
OS X version 10.6.8 or later
400MB of available disk space
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store

  • IMac Intel with Parallels, Two Monitors and Screen Spanning

    Hi,
Longtime Mac user forced into using Windows XP for my business. I have an iMac G5 2.1 (iSight) PowerPC. I need two monitors with screen spanning so I'm thinking of getting an iMac Intel, running Bootcamp or Parallels with XP Pro, and using a screen-spanning program.
    1. Can I run Windows XP on the Intel Mac and use screen spanning with a PowerPC iMac?
    2. Is it better to load the screen-spanning software on the XP or Mac system?
    Thanks! Any help appreciated.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
if nobody answers your questions it could also be that nobody has tried it yet.
I haven't tried this setup yet, so forgive me for fishing in muddy water.
Windows XP is capable of using two (or depending on the graphics card even more) monitors for duplicating or spanning.
My own two Intel Macs are showing me this opportunity in the preferences.
Since I never had the need to do so I have never attached a second monitor.
The Intel iMacs and MacPros are capable of attacing second monitors however with the iMacs you a adapter which you can get from Apple.
I would suggest (if possible) to go the nearest Apple Store and try to convince the guys there to do such a setup for you to verify that it works.
    Good Luck
    Stefan

  • I am puzzled by iMac(Intel ?).  I am running an iMac 24 and use Mac:Office 2008.  After having downloaded my Os X LION upgrade, I am suddenly unable to SAVE (and thus alter) my Excel quotations.  This is a major issue for a salesman.  Can anybody help me

I am puzzled by the meaning of iMac (Intel) as I use an iMac 2 period.  I am running Mac : Office 2004 and do all my quotations in Excel.  After upgrading to OS X LION,  I am suddenly unable to SAVE my spreadsheets.  As a salesman whose quotations need frequent updating,  my situation is perilous to say the least.  Can anyone help me ?

Office for Mac 2004 is NOT compatible with Lion. It must be upgraded to Office for Mac 2008 or 2011, once you have upgraded the files will be accessable. Office for Mac 2004 is written for old PPC (Power PC) based machines. Beginning with Lion support for PPC based apps has been dropped.

  • Anyone using one of the new iMac intels with Logic Pro?

Hey people the title says it all really. Anyone using that particular combination? More specifically the newer Core 2 Duo range.
If so, how is it handling Logic and perhaps your 3rd party plug-ins? I used to have a Dual 1.8 gig G5 (see spec below) and that was pretty powerfull but unfortunately one of the processors died so I had to sell it on. Now I'm thinking of getting an iMac due its size and price.
    Cheers and beers everyone.
    Dual 1.8 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   3 Gig ram,

    yup
this has been asked and answered a lot - but i'll bite:
I've got a imac c2d 2.16 2gb ram and it flies. haven't got close to making it sweat yet.
been running upto 8 audio tracks with between 3-7 plugins a track, 2-3 + space designers, stylus rmx with 4/5 instances and fx and maybe 3-4 soft synths - e.g. 2+ absynths and a couple of logic plugins plus an ultrabeat.
dmitedly i am comparing it to my old powerbook - but really it flies and i'm occasionally aso running imovie in the background and surfing the web if the whim takes me.
I'd recommend at least 2 gb ram - but although i bought mine in feb with the full knowledge that a new imac might be introduced soon, i'd have to say wait....check out macrumors buying guide as it's long overdue for an imac new model.
    hope that helps,
    rounik

  • Connecting hp psc 950 to iMac Intel with USB cable

I have had my iMac for about 14 months and have been using an old Dell PC for most of my printing needs. I have reached the point that I want to convert everything to the iMac. I have Fusion and am running Windows 7 there so I can use Quicken 2010 (the Mac version is worthless). I want to print my checks to the same printer that I have been using on the PC. I thought it would be simple to just connect the printer to the Mac using the cable, but the Mac doesn't see the printer. I downloaded the latest driver from HP and no better. Why doesn't this work and how do I fix it.
I also have an old hp Laserjet 5L that I use from time to time and would like to do the same thing.
My wife wants to connect a CanoScan 8400F via a USB cable and the same thing applies. I know this should be simple but I am stumped. Anyone have a fix for me?
    Thanks in advance

Go to System Preference>Printer&Fax. In the sidebar of the window that appears you will see all the printers that are set up (in your case that my be empty). At the bottom of the sidebar you will see buttons for + & =. Click the + button. A window will appear showing all printers attached to your Mac. Highlight the printer you want, then click the add button.

  • White iMac Intel with 10.4.1 takes 40 seconds to sleep after clicking on it

My dad's machine (after a restart) will take under 3 seconds to go to sleep after the command...but after checking email and unloading camera or some surfing- for some reason it takes almost 40 seconds.
I reduced spotlight's things to check, removed all superfluous fonts, used Activity Monitor to see if anything weird was running, removed Google Desktop....
Nothing helps...not to mention it just generally runs slow. It has plenty of RAM. I just don't get it. I have followed all of the "Tips to optimize speed on the Mac" and no luck.
    Any ideas?

See if any of these provide pointers.

  • Full Firewire Port Failure (three different machines : iMac Intel, iMac G5, Black Macbook)

I'm experiencing a failure of all FireWire ports on all of my three machines. I believe this problem began with a faulty external, FireWire powered hard drive from G-Tech. Here are all my specs, followed by a rundown of the order of events that has lead to this situation, followed by the various troubleshooting I have done.
    Equipment :
    iMac Aluminum Intel - 24" Mid 2007 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 and 1 FW800 ports disabled
    iMac G5 - 20" - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 2 FW400 ports disabled
    MacBook - 13" black Early 2008 - running OsX 10.5.8 - currently 1 FW400 port disabled
    2 500GB G-Drives (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 5TB G-RAID Drive (by G-Tech) - AC powered
    1 250GB G-Drive Mini (by G-Tech) - FW powered
    Initial Setup :
1 500GB G-Drive connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800
    1 500GB G-Drive connected to first 500GB G-Drive via FW800 (daisy chained)
    1 250GB G-Drive connected to second 500GB G-Drive via FW400 (daisy chained)
1 5TB G-RAID connected directly to iMac Intel via FW800>400 adapter
    Sequence of Events :
I had transferred some files to my G-Drive Mini in order to move them to my MacBook from my iMac Intel. I copied the files to the G-Drive Mini and ejected it normally and plugged it into my MacBook via FW400. The drive would not mount, and the power indication light would not go on. After experimenting with various connections and cables I was able to get the drive to power with FW400 and USB connected at the same time, but the drive would still not mount.
I then plugged the G-Drive Mini back into the 2nd 500GB G-Drive as it was previously connected via FW400. This action caused the G-Drive to immediately reboot and eject itself from my iMac Intel.
I then attempted to plug the G-Drive Mini into my older iMac G5 via FW400. Immediately upon plugging in, the computer shut down, and would not restart.
At this point I kind of started to freak out. I was unaware of the extent of the damage, but was upset that the FW powered G-Drive Mini had shutdown my iMac G5. I contacted G-Tech Support and they offered to replace the drive and instructed me how to manually reset the computer's SMC by opening up the iMac and finding the Cuda switch. This worked and the computer was able to start and function again, but the FW400 port seemed to be disabled.
I then tried to swap out configurations and drives on my iMac Intel to see if there was any cable problems, but doing so, slowly rendered all my FireWire ports useless. It's almost as if the act of plugging in the FW-powered G-Drive Mini started a kind of shortout chain reaction. I soon learned that none of my hard drives would connect to any of my three machines, with any kind of cable combination via FW400 or 800.
I am currently able to connect my 5TB G-RAID drive to any machine via USB, as well as my G-Drive Mini. I am unable to access the other two external hard drives, as one has only FW400 and 800 ports and the other's USB connection is not functional as well on any machine.
    Troubleshooting Steps Taken :
I have on all machines, reset the SMC in the following methods. iMac G5 - manually, by opening the case and pressing Cuda switch. iMac Intel - unplug, hold power button, restart method. MacBook - unplug, hold power button, restart method.
I have also on all machines, reset the PRAM by the Cmnd + Opt + P + R method at startup.
I have also unplugged all cables / removed battery, from all machines and left alone for a period of at least 12 hours, then re-plugged in each device one at a time.
I have also restored my hibernate mode (through Terminal) on my iMac Intel to mode 3 and also turned on Virtual Memory in system preferences and set hibernatemode to mode 7, the restarted and attempted to plug in devices. The reason I even began to deal with the hibernate mode was because I had around the same time my ports began malfunctioning, installed the DeepSleep widget, which allows you to control your computer's hibernate mode. I thought that tweaking with this setting may have made my computer incapable of recognizing devices that were plugged in. I have since uninstalled the widget and experimented with different hibernatemodes to no avail.
I also have Repaired Disk Permissions and Repaired Disk on all my machines, from within my Admin User as well as from the OsX Install Disk.
Sometimes in my System Profiler (like right now for example on my iMac Intel) my computer is "Unable to list FireWire devices," but sometimes, no warning message comes up and it simply displays the appropriate Bus speed.
I also conducted a system restore using a backup from my 5TB G-Raid Drive via USB, to a date before these problems started, but my ports are still not working.
    Summary :
I am looking at a situation where all my FW ports on all my computers appear to be disabled, and possibly also on my four external hard drives, with one possible USB port malfunction on one external drive. The only root of this seems to be a malfunctioning FW-powered external hard drive.
Is this possible? Has this happened to anyone else before? G-Tech assures me that it is impossible for my 250GB G-Drive Mini to draw enough power from a computer to permanently disable any ports, but I have tried all of the FW port problem troubleshooting steps and am at a loss.
I do not have AppleCare and would like to avoid bringing two iMacs, a MacBook and four hard drives to the Apple store and take my chances with the geniuses.
I would appreciate any help or advice you all have. Thanks for reading and for your support!

Ok. So if that was too confusing, I've re-labeled this post with letters for my hard drives and some mapping of the connectivity configurations I have attempted.

  • IMac Intel heating questions?

    Hello everyone,
I have a 17 inch iMac Intel with 2GHZ, and according the sensors, it averages about 55 degrees C. That's about 131 degrees fahrenheit. Now is that a little warmer than usual? I've looked around and a lot of people say their iMacs average about 48 degrees C. If anyone could reply that would be great.

    Hi Rizzo41999,
55C or 131F is not unusual, that is what my Mac runs at while surfing the net or doing light work. If I do image editing or anything that uses a lot of the CPU, it will go to 145 - 150F, if I burn a DVD or CD it will easily reach 160+F
Go to this site and download iStat PRO: http://islayer.com/ - you can then tell which programs or applications cause your Mac to run warmer.
Your temps are well within normal range... Rick

  • IMac Intel Edirol FA-66 monitoring delay

I read somewhere else through the discussions that Edirol products can have some problems working with GarageBand.
I used it a few times on my iMac Intel with guitar/bass and every time I experienced a monitoring delay after 2-3 mins from instrument selection, in the sense that I hit the strings and hear the sound in the earphones like, 2" later, making it completely useless.
Is there anyone else experiencing the same problem and eventually fix it?
    Cheers everybody
iMac Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iMac Intel

First off Macs have been in recording studios for years. The major problem is hard drive bandwidth. Doesn't matter how fast your machine is if the hard drive is busy doing other task. When you have just one hard drive that is being accessed by the system and all the extras running then ask it to constantly read and write your audio something is going to get caught up in a buffer somewhere.
Now if you don't lock your tracks you are also asking the cpu that is also busy doing other things to render any FX on those tracks on the fly in real time. All the time your recording a new track maybe with different FXs and again filling RAM and hard drive both being used by other things. Now you can cut down on buffer get less latency but also cut down on number of tracks or increase buffer and run the chance of latency.
All it takes is one instant of a data (traffic jam) to start causing some latency and you end up here.
The best things to do is lock tracks and use a second hard drive.

  • IMac (Intel) & Airport Express, AirTunes only required, how do I...

    Please help.
I have an iMac(Intel) with built in Airport and an Airport Express. I connect to the internet with an ADSL router connected to my mac by ethernet. I have plugged the AAE into my Hi-Fi and want iTunes to stream AirTunes. However I cant set-up the AAE correctly. If I set up a new network my Mac tries to connect to the internet via Aiport and fails. How do I stop it automatically trying to connect to the net via Airport instead of ethernet.
All I want is my iMac to send music to the AAE, nothing else.

Try not using the wizard, but the manual configuration tool, and try setting itup so that wireless networking is turned off, but AIrTunes is on.

  • IMac Intel and Aperture 1.1.1

When I install Aperture 1.1 on OSX 10.4.6 and my iMac intel with 2G0 of RAM, Aperture is'nt running and if I reboot my iMac the machine no-starting (the clock is turning continualy).
After a new installation of OS X and the patch 1.1.1 of Aperture, Aperture is running.
But Aperture stop after few minutes (10 or 30, ....)!
    I search a solution

Bonjour. I also have an Intel iMac with 2Gb and it works fine. I'm not sure why you have a problem, but have you tried reparing your permissions via Disk Utility.
If you have anti-virus, was this disabled during the install, as that may have impacted a smooth install.
I'm new to Mac's myself, but hope the above is useful. I can confirm Aperture 1.1.1 works on your hardware combination.
    Merci beaucoup.

  • Trade up to iMac Intel

I was into see the local mac dealer yesterday and he offered me $1000 for my 1.6 PM G5. I just wanted to get a flat screen to replace my old CRT. So with tax and additional memory a new iMac will cost about $1000 and a Apple screen cost $900. Are the iMac Intel's any good?

Are the iMac Intel's any good?
Not to be argumentative... but this question is pretty much unanswerable.
We'd need to know what you are planning on doing with the machine before anyone could give you their input as to whether or not the machine was good for you.
Give us some details about how you'll be using the computer... what applications you plan on running, etc., and we can offer some more opinions for you.

What protocol is Verizon using that is not compatible with the Airport Extreme built into your iMac? I have used Apple's Airport Extreme with a lot of different wireless routers with zero problems as all conform to either 802.11b or 802.11g standard both of which are supported by the built in Airport Extreme.
