I am returning to Leopard. Is it possible?

Will it be possible to return to Leopard? I want to use 10.56. I didn't have any problems with it. Photoshop CS 1 worked fine on it. On Snow Leopard I have problems with "Move a layer" with Snow Leopard (even with Rosetta installed). Also, MS Word doesn't work that well. It takes forever to save and I can't copy and paste word files from MS Word to Pages. Other strange things. It started getting really slow to shut down and slow to boot. It's OK now but that's because of the fresh install, and I haven't updated to 10.63. I am scared to do that now. The only good thing was the extra gigabytes and Safari 4, but I don't use Safari much anyway, Opera is so fast.
And lots of whirling balls of death before I did the clean install.
I don't think the upgrade works very well - from Leopard to Snow Leopard, best to do a clean install.
However, I want to go back to Leopard as I didn't have any problems with it except maybe I couldn't get the latest upgrades of certain programs and I lost about 5GBs of space on my hard drive compared to Snow Leopard.
Also, Bootcamp doesn't work as well. I can't get the network to operate on Windows XP. On Leopard, it transferred seamlessly without having to adjust the control panel or anything. Now, my only choice is unsecured wireless network. I don't want financial data to be unsecured when doing internet banking or purchasing with a credit card.
What is the point of Snow Leopard? Seems like Apple's aware of problems with it but no solutions are coming. Life is too short to worry about Update beta, update combo or whatever. Or whether 6.2 is btter than 6.1 etc.
How do I go about doing the clean install?
Will there be any problems because I will be transferring files like Safari which have a higher version than Leopard can handle? What should I do in that case? Will the lower version of applications install automatically?
I don't know how it will work out. I've never downgraded the operating system before. It's always been up.
Will it be OK or will I have to do a lot of fiddling around afterwards? Because I'm not good at that.
Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what options the Leopard installer offers. Older installers used to offer Archive and Install (which renamed your System folder and installed a new one) but I have a feeling that this won't work anyway when reverting to an older system. The other option is Erase and Install - which does what it says, +erasing your entire hard disk+.
If before proceeding you clone (not just copy) your hard disk to an external one then when you have done an Erase and Install you will be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your Home Folder, settings, and other data. (You will need a program such as SuperDuper to do this.) If you do this then you should run Migration Assistant as soon as you have the option when you boot the new install, and import Users. Do not create a new account on the new install before running Migration Assistant.
If you don't clone, but simply backup, your disk you will need to copy all the data over manually and set up networking and other parameters from scratch. In this case you would create a new account (which should have the same name as before).

  • Mac quarantine bug returns to Leopard

In my email today from ITWire:
*Mac Quarantine Bug Returns in Leopard*
Mac OS X includes a mechanism that's supposed to warn users before they execute files downloaded from the Internet, but the reappearance in Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard leaves systems vulnerable to Trojan attachments received in Mail.
The issue was fixed by Security Update 2006-001 for Mac OS X 10.4 ("Download Validation fails to warn about unsafe file types"), but somehow made its way back into the latest version of Apple's operating system.

comments, please, support staff? Are we getting a security update sometime soon?
Also, is there anywhere in this forum or a definitive article regarding Macs and infections?
As far as I know (which ain't too much):
--Macs are generally invulnerable to viruses but can be inadvertently passed on via email. (Is Mail safer than Outlook or Entourage for Mac, which comes in MS Office for Mac)
--Viruses are passed on in .exe and other PC-based files.
--Viruses can't be passed in image files or .pdf files.
--Viruses cannot launch unless a file is opened.
--As Macs get more popular, will they be more vulnerable?

    Same issue; I share my Documents folder and everyone can see the folders below it but have NO access ot most of the sub folders (the minus symbol). The one exception is a folder "Civilization IV Demo";
    Permissions:
    Documents (MAIN FOLDER):
    tpfannes(ME) read and write
    everyone read and write
Sub folders (sub folders under Documents)
    Civilization IV Demo (works):
    tpfannes(ME) read and write
    everyone read only
    staff read only
    Data Folder (No workie)
    tpfannes(ME) read and write
    everyone no access
I did a erase and install with Leopard and restored the files from a backup using Apples Backup utility.
I could probably get to a terminal window and modify permissiosn these via. chmod but I'm not all that comfortable with that.
    Any ideas????

I have a new macbook air, and want to transfer all my data using time machine from my old macbook running leopard, is this possible and easy and will it transfer all my musc and photos?

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

  • Going from Snow Leopard to Leopard...Possible?

I'd like to install OS 10.5.8 in place of Snow Leopard(has been too glitchy for me) but hear that it's not possible to use a lower OS than one's Mac originally came with.
    Is that true?

See Computer-specific Mac OS X releases and Don't install a version of Mac OS X earlier than what came with your Mac for details.

  • Issues after returning from Leopard to Tiger, icons and iworld apps!

    Hi
After headaches with Leopard i decided enough is enough and returned to Tiger to finish producing a music project.
I did erased teh drive 7 times pass, re installed Tiger and now it does hting i never seen before.
After several hours te icons get all fuzzy, some times i see the last application in the side bar as the icons for music, photos etc, even the drives look like iTunes or whatever app i last used.
Side bar also does not show hard drives at times yet they are on the desk top.
at some point its all nothing but the desktop, applications folders etc, not hard drives at all.
    please advise anyone.

From your cell it is very expensive when you wait 25 minutes, i think all 902 are charge by the minute.,
The irony of Spain is that stores now use a 902 number to charge if you ask whats in sock as well! while the average person makes 1000€ and the costs of eveyrthing electronic is not converted from Dollars!
a $1500 mac a is 1500€ which really is 2000€, no tax breaks from shipping to another state, there are no other states but countries!

  • Original Mac Mini and Leopard... possible?

I have an original 1.25Ghz Mac Mini and was thinking about upgrading to Leopard, but was wondering if Leopard would be too much for my old Mini. From what I see in the system specs, for a G4 it needs to be higher than 875mhz, so my Mini falls into the specs, but just wondering if it would really have the horsepower.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!!!
    Ken

I've now been running the 1.25 G4 mini for almost a week with Leopard, and even with 512Mb RAM I've been quite pleased with it's performance. Memory seems to be an issue because it looks as if Leopard is grabbing it all, but it's dynamically allocated so as much as it looks like it should be choking up with nothing available for apps, that hasn't proven to be the case. Indeed, it has been running with 4 'spaces', each with an active application running, since the installation and it is responsive and completely stable.
Overall, it is as I had expected - pretty much similar to Tiger in overall performance on this system. It runs the same number of apps concurrently with very similar results, excepting that Leopard offers not only the same option to run them all in the same screen as prior MacOS versions, but to also spread them across multiple 'Spaces'. Enabling the latter causes a very small performance hit, no appreciable additional CPU load, but does add some flexibility to working with the system. In some ways it allows some of the same advantages as having multiple displays, which of course the mini doesn't facilitate.
There's no transparency to the menu bar on the G4 systems, but the 3-d dock's reflectivity is present (for those who like that effect).
All in all, very workable, even in 512Mb. 1Gb should give more responsiveness, and those with 7200rpm boot drives should get even better results.
Mine was an upgrade install rather than erase or archive since I wanted to see how it behaved. It went extremely well. The same cannot be said for my aged G4 powermac however, which has taken 3 days to get installed and stable!

  • Looking to upgrade to Leopard...possible with an external CD/DVD rom drive?

I bought my MacBook in May 2006, and after my AppleCare had expired, my optical drive would randomly decide whether or not it would eject the disks I would feed it. Before it started acting up, I purchased Leopard and installed it right after it came out last year. Since a lot of third party programs were not compatible with Leopard immediately, I thought I would revert back to Tiger and wait it out a bit until programs were updated to be compatible with Leopard.
In the meantime, I bought an external DVD/CD drive for $70 (Kanguru U2-DVDRW-20LS ... http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...o... ) because I didn't want to pay the $300-$400 it would cost to get my optical drive repaired. It works fine, several times a year I do a clean wipe re-install and it works just great when installing the backup disks that came with my computer initially (Tiger). When I go to install Leopard though, it won't allow me to did it. I was thinking it may have to do something with the drivers for the actual external hard drive..but I can't find any on the Kanguru website...can anyone give me any guidance? I'm pretty clueless with all of this. Thanks in advance!!
*Short version: I want to know how to get Leopard on my 2006 MacBook (which previously ran Tiger) with the Kanguru U2-DVDRW-20LS external DVD/CD drive instead of my optical drive (since it is broken).*

If the ext DVD/CD burner can read dual-layer DVDs, then you should be able to install via it. We do that with my mate's 17" iMac whose superdrive refuses to read DVDs. However, that's with a LaCie external burner. I don't know the Kanguru model.

  • My retail version of OSX Leopard is damaged, possible to get replacement?

The subject pretty much sums it up. Before I waste time contacting Apple, will they even replace damaged disks? Or do I have to bite the bullet and buy another full retail version... if I can even find a copy.
    Any advice is appreciated.

Before I waste time contacting Apple, will they even replace damaged disks?
Unlikely it would be for free, unless you can prove it was done when they shipped you the disc.
Apple support does still sell by phone Leopard retail.
Some used and refurbished Mac shops do too*:

  • Friend with Leopard opened a possible malware attachment

My friend who uses Leopard on a few year old MacMini got an American Airlines phony email with a supposed confirmation inside an attachment. She should have known better but she opened it, it downloaded something which she then deleted but didn't turn off her computer or modem for an hour.  Looking online, there is a new malware thing going around that looks exactly like this one. I can't tell if it will work on a Mac.  She's now in panic mode, thinking that she should buy some type of malware protective software.  Any suggestions?

  • How do i return pages and keynote and possibly get a refund?

I recently bought pages and keynote from the app store, the program is fine, but i prefer word. Is there anyway i could return both programs and get a full refund?

    Hi Dale
Applications from mac App Store are entirely dematerialized. There is nothing to open before installing them.
You are right that the official policy is "no refund" but from time to time Apple accept to reimburse. They did for Final Cut Pro X.
If the customer explain that he can't work with the new features Versions and AutoSave, I assume that they will accept to reimburse.
