I am running firefox 8 on a Win 7 pc. It started crashing on startup.

I submitted several crash reports but there are none on the pc I can pull up. I downloaded a new Firefox but when I tried to install it windows said I had to have administrator privileges to do it. I am the administrator and I put in my password but it would not take it, I checked the password, changed it and eliminated it but still no go. Also tried installing as just a user but when I did the install window just disappears\. What can I do? Thanks for the help. At about this same time I had a malware attack which affected my firewall. Got it fixed but it didn't help Firefox.

The fix so far has been a shut-down/restart sometimes , or unplug and re-plug the usb keyboard from the screen.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Ok. I downloaded the PKGBUILD from AUR but makepkg failed because tomboy.desktop didn't exist in the directory where the source is downloaded from. So here's what I did:
I downloaded tomboy.desktop from AUR and copied it in $startdir/src/tomboy.desktop and deleted tomboy.desktop from the PKGBUILD line:
source=(http://www.beatniksoftware.com/tomboy/releases/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz tomboy.desktop)
So the source line now says:
source=(http://www.beatniksoftware.com/tomboy/releases/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
And now I have a working Tomboy

I'm running win 7 64 bit and have been using download helper for several years. It is up to date.ver 4.9.9 Suddenly, when I choose download a video, it seems to work sudden flashes on screen to include the default setting to convert flv to mp4, but the downloaded file is tiny and does NOT work. it remains in flv format and the "failed to conv" is added to the file name

I RESOLVED THE ISSUE. I uninstalled the converter. Re installed after a cold boot.

• Firefox 22 update crashes on startup in server 2008 R2 terminal environment. Downgrading back to 21 works fine though.

Firefox updated to version 22 and immediately started crashing on startup. Doing a completely clean reinstall does not solve the problem, as soon as the install finishes it immediately crashes. I have since installed version 21 from an old install file and it is working fine, so something with version 22 apparently does not like our Server 2008 R2 terminal environment. The server has the latest OS updates and AV/malware scans are performed routinely.

We're sorry to hear that your Firefox seems to be crashing when you open it. Please perform the following steps to give us a crash report ID that helps us find out more about the cause of the crash.
#Press the following shortcut to get a Run window: [Windows] + [R]. This should bring up a window that contains a text field.
#In that text field, enter %APPDATA% and press Enter. An explorer window should open.
#From that explorer window, double-click on the Mozilla folder, then double-click on Firefox and then on Crash reports. Double-click on submitted.
#Now, you should see a list of files that contain reports. Go to View > Arrange Icons by > Modified to get the most recent files at the top of the window.
#Open the most recent 5 files with a text editor and copy the IDs.
#Paste each ID with bp- into the reply window on the forums.
Thanks in advance!

• What Firefox version choices do I have for using Firefox on new laptop running Win 7 64-bit, and how do I move bookmarks from current laptop running Firefox 3.5.13 to new laptop?

Currently running Firefox 3.5.13 on laptop using Windows XP pro sp3 and will want to move my bookmarks to a new laptop. New laptop uses Win 7 pro 64-bit OS. I have read too many conflicting reports about Firefox and Win 7 and understand that Firefox is working on a true 64-bit version. What are my choices for a stable web browser for new laptop and which particular version of Firefox is recommended and the pros and cons of that suggestion? (I believe one can run Firefox 32 bit version in the 64 bit environment, but is that the best choice?) I have not installed Firefox on new laptop yet and am eager to dump IE. This is being posted from my old laptop. Thanks ...

If you go to this link you will be assured by Microsoft and Win7 "new" app checking and making sure that all drivers and software you have is compatible with Win7 64 bit. And in this article it states that Firefox version 3 IS compatible and designed for 64 bit OS, hm mm well as you know that is incorrect!! As of today Mozilla Firefox is not designed for a 64 bit computer. Thank you for your honesty and it saved me a big headache By being upnt and honest. my books!! Great job!!

• Firefox disapeared frim my win 7, and now I can't downoad it again.

Just disapeared one day. Now when I try to download, nothing happens.

Disappeared? Meaning it is not on your system anymore or you can't launch it?
You can see if Firefox is installed by going to Start > then typing firefox.exe and see if it lists.
Assuming you're on the en-US locale and used the 27.0.1 version, you can try to download from Mozilla's FTP site. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/27.0.1/win32/en-US/
You might want to try opening Firefox in Safe Mode. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that turns off some settings and disables most add-ons (extensions and themes).
(If you're using an added theme, switch to the Default theme.)
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu by clicking on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item:<br>
<br><br>
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
You might also want to scan for malware. You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

• When I attempt to open firefox an error message appears telling me that firefox is already running, but I can't find it running. How do I do so or in any case close the already running Firefox process?

When I attempt to open Firefox instead of Firefox opening, an error message appears saying "Firefox is already running but isn't responding. To open another window please close the existing Firefox process or restart the system.", but I can't find that process of Firefox in order to kill it, and after restarting the system there is still the problem. I have found an emergency fix to at least get online, and that is to use"Firefox_Profile_Manager" in the start menu's "run" start menu, but the

• I have been running Firefox on my PowerPC G5 for years and have just tried to install 4.0. When I attempt to start Firefox, a window opens telling me the application cannot be launched. I have installed it twice with the same result. What gives?

I have a PowerPC G5 quad core Mac with a pre-intel chip. I have been running Firefox successfully for over five years and have used every version in operation during that time. Tonight, I received notice that the latest version of 3.6 was ready to install and that I needed to restart. I did that and was taken to a page telling me that 4.0 was available for downloading and use. So I downloaded the new 4.0 and tried to install it in the typical Mac fashion. After clicking on the dmg, I dragged the icon into my applications folder and onto the dock. But when I click on the icon on the dock, I get the message: The application cannot be launched. 10661
When I try to launch by double clicking in the applications folder, I get the message: You cannot open the application Firefox because it is not supported on this system.
I had to go to your site using Safari of all things! I tried re-installing it with another download, and that one misbehaves in the same way. By the way, in case it matters, I still have 42 GB available on my hard drive and 5 GB of RAM.
There is one other funny thing. The Firefox icon from the disk image has a white circle with the slash through it on top of the fox and world symbol. That is what appears in my applications folder and in my dock. It appears to be saying NOT FIREFOX, as it would indicate in a NO U-TURN sign. What is this all about?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

Do a clean reinstall and download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
You can skip the step to create a new profile, that is not necessary for this issue.

• Error message that Firefox version 5.0 or later is vulnerable to phishing but I am running Firefox 16.0

I get a small box that comes up each time I enter Firefox saying that Firefox 5.0 is vulnerable to phishing and other threats. I am not sure where this message comes from. I have Norton software on the my computer. The box further asks me to update my Firefox to a later version. I check my preferences and I am running Firefox 16.0 the newest version.
I am not sure what to do about this situation.

I have been running firefox now for about 4 years and love it. Recently I tried signing on and it just runs a blank page. I uninstalled it and re installed it to no avail. I have it on my allow list for my fire wall , and have tried all the fixes that i can. can you please help. I use your program as it runs my different web sites so much better than chrome or internet explorer. attached is a picture of what I encounter when I try to sign on. than You in advance. Colleen

Hi Colleen, assuming it isn't an external software issue, then the next few things to try are as follows:
Firefox's Safe Mode
This is a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features of Firefox. More info: Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode.
If the menus are operable, you can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
* Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
If the menus are not operable, exit/crash Firefox and hold down the Shift key when starting it up again. A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).
Can you load any pages?
If you have the same issue, it could either be something in your settings or in Firefox's program folder. These approaches test those possibilities.
Create a new Firefox profile
A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should come with completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
firefox.exe -P
Don't delete anything here.
Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Dec17, and ignore the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
Can you load any pages in the new profile?
If so, it sounds like a settings problem. If not, it could be corruption of Firefox's program files. See the "Clean Reinstall" section below.
When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.
To keep the new profile and migrate data, check out this article: Recovering important data from an old profile.
Or as an intermediate measure, you could go back to your regular profile and try the Reset/Refresh feature. This article describes what is kept and lost in that process: Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems.
Clean Reinstall
(1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 34 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
(2) Exit out of Firefox.
(3) Rename the program folder
(32-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files\OldFirefox
(64-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
(4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
When starting Firefox, you may need to use the profile manager to switch back to your regular profile.
Any improvement?
Note: Some recently installed plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
* \OldFirefox\Plugins
* \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

• Need to run firefox 3.6 because of un-supported plugin.

Hello,
I am looking for advice on how to run Firefox 3.6 as securely as possible.
Yes I realize that is an outdated and insecure, but I have no choice.
I use a commercial product called Kurzweil Reader. It is a screen reader designed specifically for people with dyslexia. Other alternatives exist, but they are tailored to blind people. The visual and auditory aspects of the Kurzweil plugin are key to it's function. Upgrading to a new version is not an option either, due to the very steep pricing.
So I'm stuck using Firefox 3.6 when I want to use my screen reader.
So my questions are:
What is the best way to use the current version of Firefox as my main browser, but have the older Firefox 3.6 available to use when I wish to use the screen reader.
I'm thinking an old version of Firefox Portable, along with some configuration modifications to make it more secure, could be an option. I won't be shopping or doing banking on the older version, but I still do want to harden thing's a bit. I'm thinking disabling all plugins in it and installing "no-script". I need suggestions on settings that I can change or other plugins that I can add to "harden" my Firefox 3.6 installation.
Also running 3.6 in some sort of sandbox could be another option.
Thanks for any ideas!

Firefox Portable 3.6 should work, but it may not "find" the Kurzwell Plugin for Firefox. You would need to locate the plugin on your hard drive and put a copy of the file in the plugins folder of Firefox 3.6.
There's a support forum for Portable Apps over here:
http://portableapps.com/forums/support/firefox_portable
Firefox Portable isn't an official Mozilla product, but does have a close relationship with Mozilla.
Oh, definitely install an older version of NoScript, as you mentioned.

• I have a Mac OS 10.6.7 running Firefox 4.0.1. What happened to the enable cookies in Preference/Privacy. It's gone I need to enable. Thanks.

Question
I have a Mac OS 10.6.7 running Firefox 4.0.1. What happened to the enable cookies in Preference/Privacy. It's gone and I think I need to enable. I can't log on to Citibank to pay my bills using Firefox or Safari for that matter. Citibank says cookies must be enabled to access their on-line bank. I wonder if this is the problem...cookies that is?

Yes, I found the cookies, and thanks for taking the time to help out. I called Citibank. They told me that they will not support Firefox or Safari for Mac because our user group is too small for them and the expense too high. The person that I spoke to said in the past, Firefox has worked with Citi, but that was just by accident. At the moment they have no plans to help Mac people using the latest OS log onto their website or enable programs like my Quicken or Mint.com to access. They don't work anymore either. I think all the problems happened after the last OS update.
