I am running Lion on an '08 Macbook, should I update to Mavericks?

As I said, I'm running 10.7.5 on an '08 MacBook, with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Would you recommend I update to Mavericks?

Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
    OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
         1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
         2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
         3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
         5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
         7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
     Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
Note you must have the Late 2008 aluminum model to install Mavericks. If you are happy with Lion then there's no need to upgrade unless you want to or need features only available in Mavericks.

How do I run Windows software on my MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks? I want to run a TurboTax program to amend an old tax return. Program is not available for OSX.

    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Trying to run a printer on Parallels since I have update to mavericks?  It won't access windows. it is saying I don't have access on my computer to do this.

So do you mean that you have shared a printer that is installed in the Windows VM that is running in Parallels? And you cannot connect to this shared printer from 10.9?
What version of Windows is it?

  • Aperture 3.1.3 crashes on opening. Running Lion on brand new MacBook Pro

I have a brand new MacBook Pro (8GB RAM, i7 Core, running Lion) and am using 3.1.3 Aperture. I have same issue as some others have mentioned elsewhere in the forum - Aperture is no longer opening, all I get is an error message. A few days ago, Aperture opened just fine (I was running Lion with the 3.1.3 version of Aperture then too), but now for whatever reason it is not. I've tried removing the preferences list (com.apple.Aperture.plst), rebooting, reinstalling the update (3.1.3), and still nothing. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Guess I should've done a little more research before I posted this but, found this, which did the trick:
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip

  • I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to Mavericks OS.  The screen died and it's not worth replacing.  How do I remove the hard drive and use a drive sled to access info I need?

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS.  The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model.  I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need?  What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases.  How can I accomplish this?
My wife has a late 2008 Macbook Pro as well, which I am assuming I need to run my hard drive.  Is there a way to just access just my hard drive without interfering with hers?
I know this is lengthy.  Thanks to whoever looks at this and offers advice/instruction.

the device you need is an External enclosure for a 2.5" (laptop form factor) SATA drive.
A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later.  A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files.

  • Beware: if you run Lion on a separate drive, don't update aperture

I'm not sure how MacOSX managed it, but I ran Aperture tonight (on SnowLeopard) and it tells me that I can't run this version of Aperture on my operating system!
The problem is, I never updated to the version it was claiming. The AppStore prevented me from updating to the "Lion Only" version. So what happened?
I have Lion installed on another drive. It has nothing to do with my Snow Leopard drive, there's no connections to it. But after I updated Aperture on that drive, on Lion, it must have decided to update my Snow Leopard partition as well - and bypassed all the obvious problems with that.
TimeMachine came to the rescue, but still. I'm surprised Apple could find a way to corrupt my installation this way.
AppStore runs around all drives looking for Application folders to update, regardless of OS?

Sounds to me like the launch services didn't use the version of Aperture in /Applications on SL but launch the one on the ML drive instead.
TimeMachine reverted the library back to how it was previously, so that rules out "having been opened by 3.3"
One way to test: pull the other drives other than the one with the OS you want to use or test with.
Pull the drives and leave only one. I assume you would also clone your systems for backup so you have working untouched off line copies of each using Carbon Copy Cloner or another.
Merging libraries iPhoto libraries in Aperture
Note: Before you start, you must have opened each iPhoto library you intend to merge at east once in iPhoto 9.3 or later.
    To merge the libraries:
    Open Aperture 3.3 or later.
Click the File menu and choose Switch to Library > Other/New. Use the library selector to choose one of the iPhoto libraries you'd like to merge.
Choose File > Import > Library
Select one of the remaining iPhoto libraries you wish to merge.
Repeat steps 3-4 for each additional iPhoto library you wish to merge.
The library you started with in step 2 above includes content from all the merged libraries. The other libraries are still present (and useable) on your computer. Once you have confirmed that the unified library is working correctly, you may wish to remove the other libraries from your hard drive. It is a good idea to back up all your libraries before doing so.

  • My MacBook crashed while updating the maverick system. When starting up now it has a screen with a folder with a ? And won't load up

Has anyone been able to startup properly after this? I have tried pressing "alt" when loading MacBook and clicked on the drive, it then comes up with a grey screen.

iOS does not run on MacBooks.  But now that you can't startup, you likely can't figure what is running.  This tip explains how to recover data if it is not backed up:

Hopefully your directory is the only thing damaged, or the PRAM battery/capacitor is young enough that resetting will fix it.

  • I have a Belkin USB N150 Wireless Adapter used since my airport card broke. It worked in mountain lion however no longer works when i updated to mavericks. Anyone have a solution to this?

Is there anyway to fix this, or is there a way to downgrade back to mountain lion?

    Hello melissanelson110,
If you've backed your Mac up with Time Machine, you may be able to revert to Mountain Lion by restoring from your backup.

my macmini is running lion server and safari 5.1.  my iMac is running lion and safari 5.1.  my macbook pro is running lion and safari 4.0.4 and update is stating that there are no updates available.
how does one force an update to safari 5.1 for lion in this situation?

Did you move or copy the Safari application? It should be in the Applications folder at the top level of your startup volume.
There is no downloadable installer for the Lion version of Safari.

  • I have a 13" MacBook Core 2 (Penryn),can it run Lion?

Just got this in a trade,it has 2mb of ram,2.1ghz and I'm thinking it should run Lion....but according to Low End Mac it cant boot a 64bit OS,just a 32bit one. This is confusing me to no end.Anyone know if my "new" Macbook will run Lion or not?

You should be able to run Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), if your system match the specs then you just need to download and install Lion.  Take a look at this link first to prepare your MacBook, http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20076201-263/how-to-prepare-your-mac-for-os -x-10.7-lion/

Be very very sure to select the correct one.
Install this one and see if it works. Usually this is a better way anyway.

  • Macbook Pro takes a long time (41 secs) from start to reach log-in - It used to be almost instantaneous, I'm running Lion OS

My Macbook Pro takes a long time (41 secs) from start to reach log-in - It used to be almost instantaneous, I'm running Lion OS. I thought this might be because I'd used a lot of disk space but I've now reduced that - I'm only using 40 of the 320 gb available. I have no games and I've unchecked the "re-open windows" option on shutdown. The rest of the preformance (once in) remains good.

41 seconds is actually a little faster then normal. Boot from completely off is normally around 45-50 seconds.
Your computer never ever came on almost instantaneously from completely off. You are confusing waking up from sleep mode and booting the computer from completely off.

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.
