If your Mac's compatible with Yosemite, you can upgrade directly to it.

  • I can't find the mac app store on my imac. i am running snow leopard, and i have run "update software" several times. what's up?

I am trying to upgrade to Lion. I need to go through Mac App store to buy it. I need to get the Mac App store icon in my dock. I have run Update Software several times, trying to get the Mac App store onto my iMac, but with no luck. It doesn't show up in the dock, it doesn't show up in Finder under Applications, and it doesn't show up when I search in Searchlight for App Store, Store, Mac App Store, etc. What am I doing wrong?

    I am running snow leopard
    James....
You arne't necessarily doing anything wrong.
Install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That should reinstall the App Store for you.
Restart your Mac after the combo is finished installing.
You should see the App Store icon in the Dock and be able to access from your Apple menu also.
Make sure your Mac meet's Lion's requirements

  • Recently safari has been quit unexpectedly I've upgraded to snow leopard and I have the latest safari software. What can I do about it to rectify the problem?

Recently Safari has been quitting unexpectedly. I've dumped my cache several times and even upgraded to snow leopard.l I have the latest version of Safari 5.0.5. The situation has gotten quite annoying and been going on for about three weeks now. What can I do to fix this short of bringing it to someone?
I restart and it works fine for  awhile and then it quits again. I either restart and/or dump the cache AGAIN! This is getting quite tedious. I've even taken the battery out and reinstalled it. Nothing seems to stop the quitting.

You don't need anything higher than OSX 10.6.8 to run iTunes 11.  iTunes system requirements - http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
You can't upgrade without more RAM.

  • I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and trying to install a purchased copy of Lion 10.7, to no avail. Apple Support doesn't seem to have a solution - help?

I purchased Lion 10.7 on Christmas Day, I received my redemption code a week later. I've tried to download Lion to no avail. I've been in contact with Apple Support and they haven't been much help so far. My computer is currently running Snow Leopart 10.6.8 - however, I received Photoshop Elements for Christmas and I need at least 10.7 in order to run the program. Nothing is working. Before commenting - I CANNOT install Mavericks because it'll mess up the versions of Filemaker Pro and Quicken that I use regularly. I tried installing Mountain Lion, at the suggestion of Apple Support but I need to be running at least 10.8 in order to install that. What do I do? I don't want to have to be pushed into buying another computer when this one works just fine - but I'd like to be able to run Photoshop Elements. Apple has charged my credit card for the purchase of Lion and yet it won't install and I don't know what to do now.

Quicken 2007 for Intel (Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks) for $15:
    http://quicken.intuit.com/personal-finance-software/quicken-2007-osx-lion.jsp
It will input your Quicken PPC data file directly if it was Quicken 2005 through 2007.  If older you need Quicken 2006 or 2007 PPC first to convert your data file; and this update must be done BEFORE you upgrade to Mavericks:
    http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/patching/quicken-2006-manual-updates--mac -/GEN82200.html
Filemaker Pro PPC (in this case 7) running in Snow Leopard Server installed into Parallels for use in Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

Snow Leopard Server: 1.800.MYAPPLE (1.800.692.7753) - Apple Part Number: MC588Z/A (telephone orders only)
This solution allows you to run your Photoshop Elements in Mavericks concurrently with Filemaker Pro PPC.  Mavericks is a free download.

  • I have an iMac running snow leopard. I have trouble with my internal speakers, I cannot adjust the volume without having an earphone plugged into the jack.

The volume only works when I have earphones plugged into the jack, otherwise when I try to adjust the volume it has a circle with a cross. Ive tried restarting it with and without the headphones plugged in. However it does make that mac sound when turning on the machine before the apple logo comes on and takes me to the desktop screen. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

I'm having a very similar problem.
I've got a 2010 iMac that I've got hooked up to my Pioneer Elite via HDMI cable using the Moshi adapter.
It's been working great for months, but today the audio began dropping out -- a fraction of a second, every six seconds or so.
I installed the latest Snow Leopard update today. Does anyone think there might be a connection?
    thx!

  • Adobe CS2 and Snow Leopard  - do I have to buy CS4 to use SL?????

    That is RIDICULOUS!!!!
In order to use Snow Leopard I have to spend 1,000 in a new CS suite!!????
Adobe is in debt with all the CS, CS2 and CS3 users who can't install a new OS on their Macs
because there is no support for CS old Versions.
    Shame on you Adobe!!!
We demand a patch to solve this situation!!!

Have you yet complained to St. Steve of Cupertino that Apple does so little to maintain application compatibility when they release new versions of their operating systems?
It is a primary rule of operating system development and maintenance that you maintain full compatibility with existing applications and not break such compatibility just for the purpose of being "neat and cool, cool and neat."
If you are willing to spend time and $$$$ to upgrade your operating system to a new and incompatible version, you should be prepared to also spend money for versions of applications that had to be seriously rejiggered to work with these incompatibilities.
Adobe didn't break compatibility, Apple did. Complain to them!

  • Spotlight on my iMac running snow leopard will not stop indexing the hard drive. How can I stop this?

Spotlight on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8) has suddenly begun indexing the hard drive non-stop, causing very sluggish operation and spinning beach balls. Reinstalling the operating system has not helped, nor has repairing permissions or the disk.

One of the first things that happens when installing a new version of OS X is that the Spotlight search app is setup to index all available hard drives.
The indexing makes it faster and easier for the Spotlight Search app to find things on and off your Mac.
You can either let it take the time it needs to do this (Spotlight will only do this one time, initially) OR if you just can't or want to wait for this to complete, you need to go into OS X System Prefences panel in the OS X Dock, locate the Spotlight icon.
Click the Spitlight icon and another set of menus appear.
Find the menu item dealing the Spotlight indexing and uncheck its checkbox to disable Spotlight indexing.

Every time I turn my iMac on it will not connect to the internet until I open System Preferences / network / Assist me. that reports that my internet access appears to be OK, and hey presto my web home page appears, and everything if ok. The same happens if I have opened Mail, nothing until I've gone through the above proceedure.
This has been happening for a week.
    The iMac uses Mountain Lion.
I have no such difficulty with my Macbook Pro which runs Snow Leopard.
I have deleted the safari caches and logs, to no avail.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the grey Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal.

  • I have a 41/2 year old MacBook running Snow Leopard 10.6.  Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion on this machine?

Can I updgrade an old Macbook to Mountain Lion so I can put stuff in iCloud?  I am currently running Snow Leopard but I've been told this machine will not upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion.

First we need to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.
The Early 2006 model 1,1 Core Duo can only run a maximum of 10.6 Snow Leopard. The models Late 2006 Core 2 Duos 2,1 through Early 2008 4,1 can only run a maximum of 10.7 Lion. The Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody through the Mid 2010 White Unibody model 7,1 can run 10.8 Mountain Lion.

  • Why does apple still think my computer is running snow leopard?

I am running OS X Lion on my 2009 MacBook Pro and everything works fine.  Then, I installed 8gb of RAM and a 500gb hard drive.  To do so, I had to load Lion onto the drive before putting it in my computer, which worked fine, but when I try to install the new version of Safari (5.1 or 5.2), it tries to install the Snow Leopard version, then tells me that my computer is incompatible.  I think that my hard drive is on lion, but the rest of my computer thinks it's running snow leopard.  So what do I do?  Do I just load Lion onto my complete system one last time?  Thanks!

but when I try to install the new version of Safari (5.1 or 5.2), it tries to install the Snow Leopard version
Right or control click the Safari app icon in the Applications folder then click Get Info.
Which version do you see there? If it says: 5.1, that's exactly what you need.
And click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen then click About This Mac.
Which version do you see there?
If you are running Lion, the only way to reinstall Safari is to run Lion Recovery

  • Do I have to have OS X Mavericks before I can download Yosemite?

I have a Mac Book and recently tried to upgrade to Yosemite and after 3 days of downloading it said that it could not. There was sufficient memory on my laptop so not sure why it would not download.
Do I have to have OS X Maverick installed before Yosemite can download?

How much hard drive space is free? You need 8 GB or more of available space.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:
    Leopard system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517
But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
