I just received delivery of my refurb hi-res powerbook to be used as a backup system and it looks great, it looks like what you would get if you bought one brand new plus apple threw in a 100GB 7.2RPM drive instead of the advertised 80GB (5.4RPM). Now, problem is i've been told i can only keep one
Both machines serve my needs without a doubt easily, but i'm torn between which one to keep. I'd keep them both but unfortunately the folks took delivery of the PB and want to know why i'm keeping two machines. I told them one is meant as a backup but they aren't buying that and say i must get rid of one immidiately.
Only gripe with the PB is the line issue which is hard to see in my version ( you have to look for it) whereas the only grip with the MBP is the infamous whine issue although solved by the widget solution.
To be fair the MBP has the edge (obviously) but the novelty of having the last G4 machine (which i think will boost resale price) is tempting. I know the resale value of the new intel machines won't be as great as the PowerPC products as product revisions will become very prolific- "why would i wanna get a Dual Core 2GHz for 800 bucks when i can get a Dual Core 4GHz for 1200 bucks" will be future reasoning.
Anyway enough rant and i know this is not your problem but any advice would be appreciated.

I don't really see the PB G4 holding value. I kept my 1.25Ghz PB as a legacy machine for the oddball classic programs I have that Rosetta won't run or run well. But for day-to-day use the MBP beats it hands down. If I had to chose between one or the other I'd hand over my PB with no tears shed. For one thing the MBP doesn't taunt me with spinning beach balls every two seconds.
Historically speaking only two Macs have held anything close to what could be considered value...the Cube and the 20th Anniversary Mac. Both are considered collector's items to an extent. I don't see the PB gaining cult status anymore than the last OS 9 bootable PB did. It's just going to become an old obsolete machine like old computers do.

Why is my image showing up as a clip of 8 repeating images, rather than a single image? It does not show up 8 times in the movie, only in the editing screen as a clip with torn edges. This hasn't happened before.

In the past, when I moved an image from the frame where I would store all the media I may want to use in a particular project, to the upper frame where you create the project, the image would only show up as a single frame. Now, it is showing up and looking more like a video clip, repeated 8 times and with a "torn edge" at the end. When I play the image, it only shows up a single time. I am not able to edit each frame individualy. The Ken Burns icon only appears in the upper left corner of the first image. I must have accidently changed a setting somehow, but don't remember doing this. While the quality doesn't seem to be affected, it is taking me much longer to go back through the images and crop/fit them.
I am using imovie '08 and would consider myself an extreme novice.

I should clarify, when I meant I can only edit the first image, I don't mean only the first image of the project, but rather the first image of the 8 repeats.
I should also add that the project didn't begin this way. I added enough images and then put the first song on. When I started adding the photos that would be shown as the next song played, that is when they showed up as repeats of 8 AND all the previous images did the same. That is why I am thinking I changed a setting when I added the music, but if I did, it was done accidentally and I can't seem to back track and find what I did.

How to fix a partially torn computer charger

I've only had the charger for a year and it has already been partially torn at the base of the charger, i have to move the chord in a certain position to charge and it is really ******* me off, the price for a new charger is outrageous so i want to see if there is anything i can do to fix it.

IMHO you do not fix things like that. I suggest you buy a new one.

Elements 9 saves images as torn paper

Dear Friends,
I am helping a student who is running Elements 9 on Windows 7. When she opens an image from the Organizer into the Full Editor and creates an adjustment layer, she then saves this image as a Photoshop document. When she does this, the image appears in the organizer as a torn piece of paper and the window has a question mark warning.
If she moves this image back to the Editor, it reopens correctly. It appears that she cannot save as a photoshop document with layers without this happening.
If she flattens the image and saves it as a jpeg, it appears with a thumbnail in the Organizer.
This has just started happening in the last 2 days. These images have only been downloaded from her camera directly to a folder in Pictures. She has not opened them before in any other software.
In addition, the folder that these images came from is no longer visible in Pictures.
Any thoughts?

Try right clicking on image and then Update Thumbnail. If this doesn't help it could be that the image location was moved outside of PSE and now PSE doesn't know where it is. You should only move an image location from within PSE with the Move command.

Torn page recovery - Experiences and Best Practices

- What do you do to reduce the possible downtime for the worst case?

We have had our R3, CRM and BW systems up for years running on SQL Server, probably 15+ combined, and we have never experienced a torn page in any of them. In general it is very rare to have a torn page today with most production systems using a SAN and various redundant power supplies.
You can track them using torn page detection, but it can add unneeded overhead to writes and it slows down anything trying to read that data page since it has to wait for the computation.
There is no true recover for a torn page since the data is gone, you have to use a good restore and roll forward the logs to get back to where you crashed, it won't be terribly quick but it will be all you can do.
You can reduce the downtime by having SAN hardware that will limit the possibility of it even occuring. Most of the time a torn page happens when power is interrupted during a write. If your SAN has its own power backup that is unlikely.

The Quicktime Logo is Torn

I can't seem to get the Quicktime to play with my Opera browser. I have problems and it just shows the Logo as "Torn." Not sure what this means but could someone help me with this?

You must have an older version of QuickTime installed on your machine (version 6).
Check the opera help files for some clues. Make sure you've "enabled" browser plug-ins.
Post the URL to the Web page that gives you this behavior so we can look at the page code.

Error 823: I/O error (torn page) detected during read at offset in a file

Hi ,
            We got an error 823 torn page in attaching database. Is there any solution to recover from this. We do not have the backup of database also.
      The database unable to attach and it has the same error in   C:\programfiles....\master.mdf and as well as main database F:\ze1data1.mdf also.
      Is there any solution to this ? Try to perform DBCC CHECKDB but it is unable to proceed because of not having single user mode.

Use database_name

ALTER DATABASE database_name SET SINGLE_USER
GO
DBCC CHECKDB('database_name', REPAIR_REBUILD)

to return to multi-user mode:

Torn photo icon

What does the icon of a torn photo mean in the organizer of Elelments 10. I suspect it means file size is too large. If so, how do I increase the Organizer's ability to create a thumbnail of my larger image files?

Try these options:
1) In the Organizer; under File->Catalog, select your catalog and click Optimize. OR
2) In the Organizer; under File->Catalog, select your catalog and click Repair. OR
3) Try rebuilding the thumbnails as per these steps:
3.1. In Help > System Info, find the folder containing your catalog.
3.2. Exit PSE.
3.3. In that folder, delete the file “thumb.5.cache”.
3.4. Restart PSE.
3.5. Edit > Select All.
3.6. Edit > Update Thumbnail.
Let me know if this resolves the issue.

Imac showing mosaic/torn video on screen in itunes & various apps

Hello-
I have a 24" alum. imac 2.4 GHz that I purchased in February of this year. I left the imac in sleep mode last night and was using it this a.m.- everything was fine for about 2 hours and then my screen started showing this mosaic/torn video pattern in every single app I had open.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the issue?

Text appears torn/ripped

Dear developers, I am testing an app on IPAD 4 retina, IPAD mini, Samsung 10.1 and an Asus 7 Memo. For the first 3 tablets, I am having no issues with text and how it appears on the screen..
On the Asus 7, some of the text appears as if it is ripped/torn.
On one level, the text appears fine. When I reuse the exact same variable on another level and just change the displayed text, it appears ripped or torn. I have looked at the code and it is identical for each level (except I change the actual display text).
As well, other text on the same level in which I have a problem appears normally. Any ideas?
There is just too much of this occurring in the app before I can release it.

Are you sure you have embedded the font, Ive noticed if I use a font and dont embed everything, numbers, upper case, lower case... then sometimes a few letters will dissapear or characters. Be sure you are embedding everything you are using.

2: You have subscribed to this option.
Speed will be as it is with your existing iPhone.

Torn photo icon when saving JPEG composition

PSE 6 & Vista.
Just completed a composition on blank file using custom shapes & text, all of which required many layers.
Saved in JPEG (this format has not proved problematic in dozens of other
similar compositions ).
After saving, it appears in Organizer as a torn photo icon. If I try to re-open in editor message appears 'cannot open....because it is wrong type of file'.
Is there any means of retrieving it as it took some 30 mins. to compose?
Also why would Elements allow me to save in JPEG if it could not produce
an image?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Wait a minute...
You can't rename it to M.C -- you have to remove the periods from the file name (except the period in front of .jpg) and then import it into the Organizer.
Furthermore, how could you change the file's name and then not be able to find it? To change the file's name, you have to know what folder it is in...

Torn Movie Logo after "Run Active X"

Example : Utube movies still run in their box but the Quicktime torn movie logo comes up after clicking Active X box.
Im using Windows XP Pro and downloaded Quicktime a month ago along with the new update of Internet Explorer when the problems occured.
Also steaming videos (even when I've de-checked "streaming" under MIME settings) have the same error logo...
I'm a bit frustrated and haven't seen any help except for web servers html issues. Thank you

YouTube videos are Flash Video and you need to install Flash Player to view them. QuickTime can only play very old Flash content.
QuickTime Control Panel/Browser tab MIME Settings
Remove the check mark (Miscellaneous) for Flash Media
Quit and restart your browser and try again.

56k modem ribbon torn + handles are broken

Alright,
I purchased a computer from so no good online. He sent me the old G3 Blue and White, with it it has a 56k modem on the motherboard. The cable connecting it to the motherboard was torn. How do i replace the ribbon, maybe without the entire new modem? Secondly, When the joker sent me the computer, it was dropped, meaning the handles were broken. Is there a cheap way to get new handles for it. There may not be any way to get this to work, but I figured someone out there would know something.
