  • Just got new 23" Apple displays and I love them

Hi, I just had to post that I have updated to new dual 23" apple displays and they are awesome! So if you are thinking of updating and can afford it then I would HIGHLY recommend updating. I can't believe that I lived without them.

Here is one place that discuses the different LCD panel types:
    http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000991.html
Yes, the ACD will work fine for editing videos. There are more expensive solutions from places like LaCie, Eizo and high-end NEC. Yes, these are better monitors, but only you can decide if they are better enough to justify their cost for your situation.
Whatever monitor you get, you should get a calibration
system (X-Rite Eye-One Display 2, Datacolor Spyder, etc.) and use it regularly, since the monitor can drift over time. Some of the higher-end monitors come with a calibration system included, but you usually have to purchase this separately. My personal experience was that I was not able to get the Spyder 3 Elite software to work for me, and their tech support department couldn't help, so I returned that and got the Eye-One Display 2. You might have better luck with the Elite than I did, but I also like the fact that the sensor cord for the Display 2 seems more rugged than the one on the Spyder. Given that the sensor is going to hang by the cord when you calibrate, I prefer to see a beefier cord.
Sorry, but I cannot answer your questions regarding Final Cut, since I have not used it. Obviously, if you can afford it, a Mac Pro will have more horsepower, such that it will be able to do more for you in the future as your business expands. Whatever Mac you get, don't skimp on the amount of RAM you install.
Good luck with your new business.

  • Can anyone recommend a quality microphone for recording instruments?

    Hey,
I'm a Garageband and digital audio newbie. I understand you can connect a microphone to record in, instead of using the built-in mic. Can anyone recommend a couple different good quality mics? I want to record an acoustic guitar. Or maybe a web link that discusses how to do this?
Also, in the Garageband Help it describes as an alternative using an audio interface between the mic and the computer. Can anyone recommend something for this? Again, maybe an online article that discusses this in more detail?
I can't really find any specific information to help with this other than the vague sales and Help material.

My personal fav's for the sound quality and price point are the Apex 415 and Apex 460. Both are condenser mic's so then need phantom power, but the 460 comes with a phantom powered preamp so you should be good to go assuming you have an appropriate interface to your mac. Price on them is ~$160CDN for the 415 and ~$260CDN for the 460. The sound quality on these is stunning - rich, warm, and exceptionally detailed, especially compared to the shure SM57's. I will agree though that the SM57 is a terrific all-purpose mic (the design hasn't changed in 20 years, it's hard to argue the accepted capability of these mic's!), but I've found that it just hasn't been able to do justice to the rich sound of my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. Last night I was practicing with my band and was testing out an Apex 415 in place of the SM57 I usually use to mic my guitar cabinet, and when I played the sound back, I commented to the drummer that it sounded really good. He was looking directly at me, listened, and after a second realized that I wasn't actually playing my guitar and was instead playing back the recording. The expression on his face was priceless..."holy $hit that sounds good, I thought you were actually playing!".

  • CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND GOOD VIRUS PROTECTION?

    Dear All
I am now using my Macbook with high intensity and am worrying about virus infiltration. Twice in the past month my Mac has turned itself off and I have had problems with my internet connection. While these aren't definitely linked to viruses, I am keen to protect myself nonetheless. Can anyone recommend Mac specific, reliable protection?
    Thank you

As suggested the ClamXav is very good. For added peace of mind you might want to use Little Snitch. It alerts you if anything on your Mac tries to connect to the internet or phone home. Then you can decide to either let it or stop it. The beta version has some extra features that lets you monitor the local area for traffic. I have been using it for a couple of years and am surprised at some of the software that tries to phone out.

  • Can anyone recommend a good to do list manager?

I like iCal for many reasons, but I'd like a to do list that had a bit more functionality (not a Dashboard widget!). Can anyone recommend something they've found useful? Thanks.

I'll take a look at Palm Desktop. One problem is that I like iCal in most other ways. My wife and I were able to establish a household mini-network, sharing calendars, etc. But the to-do list is really very limited.
We used Now Up-to-Date for awhile as well, and the to-do options there were very nice. But that was a bit more complicated, and overkill for us. So I was hoping there was some utility that just did to-do things better than iCal.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,
    On any machine, please try:
Click the "Options" tab on the PowerPoint toolbar,
then select "Play Full Screen" from the "Movie Options" group.
The "Options" tab is located directly underneath the "Movie Tools" button.

  • Can anyone recommend a good instruction book for intermediate Mac users?

I have been using Mac for 3 years now so am not a total beginner, but still need help in many areas of OS X use. These forums are brilliant and thanks to the willing help from more expert members I have learnt a lot ( thank you), however there are times when just having a book open in front of you is the easiest way to get to grips with something. Can anyone recommend a good user manual for people like me who don't need a real beginners guide but also don't want a mind numbing, in depth, advanced text. I already have Maria Langers Visual Quickstart Guide which is useful but is exactly what it says, a quick start, and David Pogues Missing Manual which I find a little frustrating as he seems to fall short of explaining exactly how to do something after he says it can be done!
I guess what I am really after is a clearly written book that is good for beginners and more advanced users alike, with screen shots to show you what you should be doing.
    Grateful for any suggestions.
macbook white 2ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   512mb ram and 60gig hard drive,

    Hi again,
Many thanks for the feedback and the star!
For troubleshooting, Dr Smoke's Troubleshooting Mac OS X eBook is invaluable. Again, I have the Panther edition. I haven't, yet, felt the need for the Tiger edition with so many of the tips available free via his FAQs.
The only drawback, of course, is that when one is in a fix and possibly unable to boot up, the e-book isn't accessible unless one has a copy on another Mac.
    Have fun,
    Adrian

  • Can anyone recommend a USB print server for both Mac & Windows?

After spending at least 20 hours trying to get my Macbook to print to a Windows XP shared printer, I am giving up and going the print server route. Unfortunately there seem to be a LOT of options and some are >$100. I want to be sure to find one that works for both Mac and Windows XP. Can anyone recommend a print server based on experience?
It can be hard-wired to the network (does not need to be wireless) and only needs one USB port. Also, it does not need to be "multi-function" compatible.
    Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, Apple just started using the CUPS printing system ~4 years ago. With CUPS drivers, you can print to all the standard comm protocols, the way drivers work in Windows. But except for Brother's, NO non-postscript printer driver on OS X was written to use CUPS. Instead they are using Carbon, the OLD OS 9 legacy programming interface. In that, they get to specify exactly which protocol is supported - and that's nearly always ONLY USB.
So, we have to rely on third party CUPS drivers. See if Gutenprint supports yours:
    http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/macosx
or else, you may need to use printfab:
    www.printfab.net
About print servers - they nearly all support "standard" protocols, which OS X (with CUPS drivers) can print to.

That's a very broad question and difficult to answer without knowing more about you requirements.

  • I'm about to hulk out guys! Brand new iPhone 5 and need to update iTunes for recognition. Keep getting "the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail." Can anyone help? I may smash something very soon.

I'm about to hulk out guys! Brand new iPhone 5 and need to update iTunes for recognition. Keep getting "the installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail." Can anyone help? I may smash something very soon.

    iTunes:
    AppName: itunes.exe
    AppVer: 10.5.0.142
    ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0
    Offset: 001be6f6
    Quicktime:
    EventType : BEX
    P1 : QuickTimePlayer.exe
    P2 : 7.71.80.42
    P3 : 4ea5c6ef
    P4 : QuickTimePlayer.dll
    P5 : 7.71.80.42
    P6 : 4ea5c6d5
    P7 : 00005b6d
    P8 : c0000409
    P9 : 00000000
That's consistent with another application (other than QuickTime) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in non-standard locations on the PC.
So we'll go looking for the older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view options on the PC.
    1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
    2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "system32" folder.
What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone

Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone. The one intalled is hopelessly inadequate and inefficient. 2 Main problems- The current iCal + Contacts programs do not link to each other. And there is no To Do List!
Palm and MS Outlook had those features 6 years ago! Whats up with Apple?!!

ical does have a to do list in it. either click the little pin under the calendar, or click show to do list in the view menu.
i don't know much purpose behind needing to link ical and address book (not that i'm saying it isn't important at all - you obviously have some type of need for it). but it's got to be possible somehow, because you can set ical to make a calendar of birthdays from your address book contacts (in the main preference pane for the application).
plus, i doubt there'd be another mac calendar application you'd be able to sync with your iphone, unless whoever developed it developed an iphone app to sync it with. probably wouldn't sync with your contacts/calendar apps that come with the iphone.

  • Can anyone recommend plug-ins for vocals?

Can anyone recommend plug-ins for vocals? I'm looking for an average "radio" sound. How can I get that?
    Thanks
    Anya
imac 20 inch 2 gig Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   apogee + miroslav + looking for great midi controler

    well
    Let's start again:
I use imac and ensemble by apogee as my audio
interface with and rode ntk microphone. that should
give me a preatty decent sound, but it comes out
    kinda hollow and unnatural.
    Hi AnyaS,
It seems like the room you are in might be adding it's "sound" and making your vocal sound like it is going through a tunnel,or "hollow" sounding.
Where are you doing your vocal recording? When you sing,do you hear your voice come back at you funny, like from a wall,or like you hear a faint "echo" or repeat in the room?
I could help you,but without actually listening what you are talking about it is almost impossible to know what problems you might be encountering, and also if you can point to a reference CD or artist that you are trying to sound like,I can't really give you concise advise as to what to do to get you there.Do you have any way of showing us some of the sound you are getting so we can listen to it? That can help a lot more than describing in words what you are not liking about your voacl sound.Again a lot of this is subjective use of language,so when you say "hollow sound" it could mean something else to me.
And as to the radio quality - I mean sound more round
and defined - someting that I could send to radio
    and/or AR.
Well,I think you are putting the cart ahead of the horse here...try to get your sound "there" to where you like it first, before trying to be judged by "radio and A&R" people.
I am not sure how I can improve:
    - better/additional hardware or
    - better mastering/playing with software (I have IK
studio bundle - that I have only utilized so far as
    sound source).
I am willing to spend additional $1000 if needed but
    rather not.
I think you do not need to throw money at the problem...that never usually works. It is better to understand what sound you want to get first, and then try to get there.
I'll listen to what you have posted, but if you can have a link to a vocal without ANY processing,i.e. as you record it in your usual place, that would help more than a full mix of your music.I can tell easier what to do if your vocal is by itself.
you can listen to working draft here:
    www.broadjam.com/aannaa
sorry I don't know how to create a link here.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.
