I am thinking about purchasing an ipad

I am thinking about purchasing an ipad, however a major concern of mine is the Kindle app and if the ipad has the text to speech feature

Yes, there is a Kindle App (at least in the US). It syncs with your Amazon account for download purposes, but you cannot make purchases from it.
There is a dictation feature.

  • Thinking of purchasing an iPad

I just graduated High School and was considering on purchasing an iPad with some money I recieved; however, I already have an iPhone and laptop to use for college. I was wondering if it would even be worth it or if I'm just technologically hungry for something new. I will be going into Business Management or Finace and International Business once I get into college (don't know if there's an app that can do anything with that really but thought I'd mention it). Also, I'm just looking for overall opinions from people that may have an iPad and a laptop and how much use the iPad gets, and can the iPad do anything better than my laptop/iPhone may be able to do?
    Thanks for any help!

The iPad is a extension of a computer, there really isn't any "must have" feature that isn't already on laptops.
The iPad needs a stand to hold it, the keyboard on it is lousy to type on, the screen is glossy and reflects everything, the storage is poor, the dual core Atom like processor is weak, it can't run Flash sites, you can't use software other than what Apple approves of and worst off you have to hold it to see the screen.
Instead of a iPad for very light portable uses, I got a 160GB netbook for $220 that I installed Linux - Like XP on, comes with tons of free software and I can use Flash too.
Cheap, portable, more storage and if I lose it or it gets stolen, it's only $220.
Not a highly sought after iPad that I got to worrry all the time about.
The iPad has it's uses, but $500 is a lot for no storage and being chained to the AppStore.
I have a nice i7 Quad core with a 1GB Radeon 6750M video card on a 2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro or better is a clearly superior alternative and a much better value for your money, despite having to put up more up front for it.
You can 3D game, you can run many operating systems, run Windows games, Linux etc.
That's three operating systems running at once, Windows 7 64 bit, Linux Mint 11.04 64 bit, iTunes and a wild Hyperspace screensaver running as a desktop background.
I blow Mac users as well as PC users away with my machine, the raw power is awesome.
Even playing a 3D game in Windows, in a virtual machine under OS X.
Problem with the iPad is one has to continously buy more stuff to get some functionality out of it.

  • I am thinking of purchasing and iPad 2. Me and my wife both have iPhones and separate iTunes accounts. Is it possible to access both of our iTunes accounts on one iPad?

I have been toying with the idea of purchasing an iPad 2. Me and my wife both have separate  iTunes accounts as we both have iPhones. I just wondered if it's possible to log into more than one iTunes account on one iPad, or if not would we have to set up a joint iTunes account?

What you could do is have one of you with the main iTunes account and use home sharing to get access to your wife's iTunes music, etc.  my wife and I do this, but we each have our own iPads.

  • I'm thinking about purchasing a 21.5" iMac.  The base model comes with 8GB of RAM, and the RAM is not user-upgradeable down the road.  Is 8GB enough memory or should I upgrade to 16GB?

I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM.  Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable.  Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB?  Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio.  Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.

For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.
I like to play flash games
I didn't try a lot of Flash games while I still had 4GB RAM but those I tried ran without issue and without causing a non-trivial number of page-outs

  • I have a iphone 3gs I am thinking about purchasing a ipad2 do I have to repurchase apps I have for the iphone for the ipad?

I have a iphone 3gs. I am considering buying a ipad2, do I have to repurchase apps for the ipad that I purchased for the iphone?

No, unless there's an iPad version of your App that the developer wants to sell separately.

  • I am thinking about buying an iPad 3 with WiFi + 4G whilst I am in New York, but I would be using it in the UK and wanting to use a microsim from o2, is this possible?

I understand the difference between WiFi and WiFi + 4G iPads, but I have been able to find very little information on whether I could buy the WiFi + 4G iPad in the US and use an o2UK microsim as I read somewhere that the at&t carrier iPad doesn't work with a verizon microsim. So I was wondering whether the iPad has a universally microsim card slot or whether they are catered to the specific carrier you choose when purchasing. However, I've also read that all iPad 3's are carrier unlocked anyway, so I am confused with the information I have found.
If anyone could shed any light on this topic for me, I'd be very grateful, thanks

The iPad has a micro-SIM card slot - nothing special or unique about it.
The iPad is not sold as carrier locked.

  • Thinking about purchasing ibook

can i run windows on the ibook, or do i have to run mac?

    Hello Ben,
I've been using the Mac for just over one year now. I truly love it and vowed to never subject myself to the confusion of Windows ever again. Just about everything (besides SOME games) you can do on the PC, you can run just as well or even better on the Mac. The Mac is designed to be simple, clean, yet powerful and highly robust. The switch to the iBook or any Mac is a great step in the right direction and you will not regret it. What sort of things were you unsure of not being able to do on the Mac? I would be happy to personally enlighten you of the Mac being much more compatible than you think. The Mac's total cost of ownership is durastically lower than that of a PC. Sure an XP machine will cost about $500.00 less to initially purchase than compared to a new iMac, but does the iMac need extra software like video, photo, and music creativity suites ($200.00 - $400.00), does it need antivirus software ($100.00), does it need periodic maintenance and reformatting ($300.00/year)...... NO! Therefore, you actually save money by owning a Mac! Sure you can't play AS many games, but check out all the great titles that ARE available for the Mac. Don't rule out the Mac as being a great system just because you can't play as many games on it or use as much dangerous freeware that leads to spyware, adware, and malware. So... if you have any other questions, let me know.
Oh and remember that I am actually unbiased in my decision, I have used both the Mac and PC and its not like I'm gaining any benefit from your purchase of a new computer. I am simply giving you an independent and truthful analysis of what the Mac really is.

  • Thinking about Purchasing

So my good old 1ghz G4 PB is about on its last breath of life, the disc drive is shot, the HD is getting old and will eventually fail and the back light is starting to wear out. So to replace it I'm thinking the 20 inch 2.4 ghz iMac, its a little more then I want to spend but I don't want or need another laptop so the Macbook is out of question. My question is how good is the hardware? Are there any problems I need to know about? All I plan to do is watch video, a little gaming, internet, etc.
Or should I wait for the next iMac version or is this one the latest?

    Hello,
Interestingly I recently replaced the HDD and Optical drive (about £100 total) on my 1GHz Titanium Powerbook and have breathed new life into it. Sure the battery only lasts an hour if I'm lucky, but I do need a machine on the move now and again.
The new iMacs are great and the vast majority of people have been really happy. The issues reported here since their release have related to graphics freezing (fixed in downloadable updates), quality of screens (the current 20" uses a lower qaulity display than old 20" models or the 24" display); and some Firewire issues, usually when using multiple devies.
Please don't let that put you off however as most have no trouble at all.

  • Thinking about purchasing a Macbook, but I need some questions answered

    Hey everybody,
I got a response to my Craigslist ad, so it's looking like selling my iMac G5 and buying a new Macbook might actually happen. My only problem is that I have some questions about what to do with my money. I'm not a power user, or someone who really plays games (other than my Nintendo emulators) so I already know that a Macbook is the right computer for me.
    (1) I don't have external storage, so how should I go about transferring my stuff? Buying the Macbook before selling my iMac is not an option because I just don't have that much money. I've read that some people buy the Macbook and then upgrade the HD, using the 60 Gig that comes with it as their external storage by buying a $20 case for it. I have about 50 GB taken up on my iMac, so I'm going to probably need around 100 GB at least. I know upgrading the memory doesn't, but does upgrading the HD void the warranty? Any brand recommendations for HD's? Heat and noise are very important to me. (7200 RPM is out)
    (2) I never really used the Superdrive on my iMac, but it was nice to know it was there. Is the performance difference from 1.83 to 2Ghz noticeable? I hear it's not, but I also read that under Rosetta it matters. Since Office isn't universal yet, I'd like to know. Can anyone verify this?
    (3) I read on MacOSRumors that Leopard is probably going to do some nice little graphic effects when it's released, and that the next revision of the Macbook Core Duo will probably still have integrated graphics. Since I don't plan on doing this again for at least another year, do you think the Intel graphics will be enough to keep up for a little while?
    (4) Anybody have some experience with selling a computer on Craigslist? I'm smart enough to request cash, local buyers only, and have them meet me at my house to try the computer out. Any advice on how to make sure this runs smoothly? I might end up leaving some things on the computer for the buyer. Anything that I should make sure to delete (i.e. preferences, passwords, etc.?) A checklist of what I should remember to do would really help.
I think that about covers all of it...Thanks in advance.

I sold my computer on Craigslist. No problems. I think it's only really dodgy if you are buying one from there - then you should be very careful!
I'm not sure exactly the best way to go about deleting your stuff, but you have the right idea: get rid of your preferences and passwords, and your internet history as well.
I'm not sure how to look at 'Keychain', but you might want to make sure that this is empty.
In terms of processor speed, I can't help you: I have just got the 2Ghz, but partly because not having a DVD burner isn't an option for me. As file sizes and your storage needs increase, your need for a DVD burner will probably increase as well.
Leopard is not far away now, and I would guess that Apple would make sure that their new OS will work adequately on their new computers. I would be surprised if there is much of a noticeable difference in anything but the most graphics heavy applications. Could be wrong about this, but I think that the basic GUI will perform well on any MacBook.
In terms of moving info from your iMac... the cheapest thing apart from buying the MacBook before you sell is borrowing a HD or iPod from a friend. 50G isn't THAT much info, you could always burn it to DVD-Rs in a pinch.

  • I am thinking about getting an Ipad, can you play like the facebook games on it?

Am I able to play games on the Ipad? Thanks

The description for the 'official' facebook app says :
Play games on the go: Access your favorite Facebook apps and games, wherever you are
Whether that includes all Facebook games I don't know

  • Thinking about purchasing faulty G4 imac

It boots upto the login screen but the owner doesn't have the disks to reset the password. IF I do go ahead and buy it, what is the ideal OS for this to run? I thought OSX was suitable for PPC and Intel based units but I know nothing about Apple computers.
    Some guidance is needed. Thanks.

    Wings,
    Watching another though, 800mhz, 768mb, 17", 10.4 tiger
I have that exact machine (actually I have 3 of that exact machine and a dead 15"). Of the 3, one is my wife's retired machine (replaced by iMac G5), one has a mysterious ailment and the last sits on the shelf above my workbench with it's display angled down within 5/8" of the bottom of it's base. I swivel it back and forth perusing .pdf files and DVDs. Try that with any other machine or display!
but the auction has now ended
Well I prefer the 17" anyway. Actually I got the first one off Craig's for $50 a few years back since it had a dead hard drive. Came with a complete set of CD installers for Tiger .
    Good luck on your quest.

  • I'm thinking about using an iPad mini with data plan as a cell phone replacement, using Skype for phone service.

Seems like a less expensive alternative, with fewer devices.  Thoughts?

If you want to stay with your current plan, you would have to add 3 tiered data plans for the new smartphones. These would be $30/month(2 GB of data for each phone) for each of the data plans, increasing your bill by $90/month to $226/month for your total bill.
If you were to switch to the Share Everything plan, you would have an access fee of $40 for each of the lines for a total of $120. This would give you unlimited talk and text. On top of the $120, you would have to add a bucket of shared data which ALL of the phones would be able to access. For $80/month, you could get a bucket of 6 GB of data to be shared between all of the phones. So far that would bring your bill to $200/month. With taxes, it should end up being about the same cost as your old plan with the benefit of having unlimited minutes. If you find yourself using less data, you can cut your data cost by lowering the amount of shared data. For example, $70/ month for 4 GB of shared data. If you find yourself using more data, you can add more data, for example $90/month for 8 GB of shared data or $100/month for 10 GB of shared data instead of $80/month for 6 GB of shared data.
If you have any employee discounts available, these would ONLY come off the data portion of the Share Everything plan. Discounts on your current plan would not change if you currently have any.
    Decisions, decisions...
