Since my G5 died I was thinking about getting a Mac Mini, but I have a ViewSonic Monitor (from 2004) and a USB keyboard and mouse - I also have the external drive that I downloaded my files on to. Do you think the monitor, keyboard and mouse will work on it? Would I have to get a hub so I could use the stuff I already have? Is that viewsonic too old to work on it?
What else would I need? Please advise...

    Yes for keyboard and mouse.
The monitor will work if it has an HDMI, VGA ir DVI input. If it only has a VGA input you will need this adopter

  • Do I upgrade my MacBook Pro, or get a Mac Mini?

    Hello!
    I'm am a University student (studying Graphics/Design).
    At the moment, I have a MacBook Pro - although I bought it in April 2010, I believe it's the 2009 model? - The 13" 2.26Ghz, 2GB memory, and 160GB model.
The thing is, it's slow. I need to use bigger applications like Aperture - when I'm editing photos, I slide all the little sliders to how I want to edit the photo, yet it takes forever to show the changes on the photo which is no use.
Another thing, I work better on a desktop computer because of how I'm not looking down to look at the screen, and it's a much bigger, clearer screen! Like on the 21" iMacs at uni, in Photoshop, it's great because all the little windows/palettes you have open, you can just throw to one side of the screen, yet on a 13" screen, they're just annoying.
    But the question is...
    - Do I keep the MacBook Pro - upgrade it's memory, and get an external monitor/keyboard/mouse for it?
    - Do I sell the MacBook Pro whilst I can get more money for it compared to if I sell it this time next year and get a Mac mini ?
I'm a first year Uni student and have never took my laptop into Uni at all.
It's just that some people are telling me to keep the MacBook because it's portable and if I needed to take it in to Uni, I could. Yet on the other hand, If I got a Mac mini, say I got around £600 for the Macbook, I'd have extra money after purchasing the Mini for a display etc, instead of losing out on money by buying an external monitor for the Macbook.
What do you think I should do? What's the more sensible option in terms of how long things will last and that?
    Cheers!
P.S. Sorry for the essay of a question... and does anyone know how I can change my display name? I don't use that email anymore, but I'd rather it not be there!

What do you think I should do?
    Get the Mac Pro.
The top-end iMac is a powerful machine by consumer and even professional standards, but a fully-upgraded Mac Pro is practically ostentatious in the amount of raw processing power it can wield. Professional consumers in areas like 3D rendering, video editing, and other extremely processor-intensive applications surely appreciate the much greater power the Mac Pro can afford them.
    Customization:
The Mac Pro stomps the iMac in the customization department. Folding down the Mac Pro's side door gives you easy and almost instant access to its innards, and virtually every component is simple to swap out. Hard drives in particular are extraordinarily easy to swap in the Mac Pro.
Contrast that with the iMac, where the RAM is essentially the only user-serviceable component. Swapping out the hard drive on an iMac is a harrowing procedure that requires removing the entire front display -- not something you're going to want to do more than once, if ever.
I added cards to add more USB Ports, more FireWire Ports, Video inputs and a dual eSATA card.
I also like the 30 inch display.
(Sounding like Darth Vader.) "You don't know the POWER of the Mac Pro."

  • Conecting 15 machinse (8 mac Pro + 7 Power Mac G4) to one mac mini.

I need to Conecting 15 machinse (8 mac Pro + 7 Power Mac G4) to one mac mini at the same time with out destrict me after 10 or 11 logins or i need the Software "Apple File Share Server or Apple Share IP instaler to run on Mac OS 9.2.2.

    Thanks for the advice!
I'll look into getting a good quality UPS in the meantime, however the situation changed the other day when I came home from work.
I turned on the Mac and it got as far as the login screen. After about two minutes of being on the login screen (I didn't actually enter my details or touch anything at this stage) it just turned itself off randomly. Therefore, I don't think what I'm trying to do in Avidemux is totally to blame for the problem in this respect.
After the Mac turned itself off this time, it wouldn't let me turn it back on for about 30 seconds of pressing the power button. When it finally started up again, it seemed to run fine for the rest of the evening.
Does this sound like the power supply is on its way out or could it be something else? If I need a new power supply, will I need a specific type of power supply and not just a standard PC one?
    Any further help appreciated.

  • Thinking of buying a mac mini and had a few questions. D:

I went to Best Buy a while ago, waited about an hour for help and I couldn't get anyone to help me.
haha so anyway, I want to get a mac mini. A reason is because I've never used an operating system other than windows, and all windows-based pcs that I've had start slowing down after a month; even with an anti virus program. So hopefully I won't have that problem with a different operating system.
One thing I wanted to do was to get a small 20-22 in LCD HDTV, would I be able to connect a mac mini onto one? Will it also play HD movies? The reason why I want to get a tv instead of a monitor is because I want to be able to connect a ps3 or xbox on it and play games every once in a while; unless maybe you can do the same with regular pc monitors. Would it be better to get a pc monitor instead? Which would you suggest?
    Thanks lots. :]

The smallest full HD TV is going to be 32" although it's possible there might be one or two that are 26" in size. Anything smaller is going to be 720p and may support 1080i. The other option would be to get a monitor that size as they will more then likely support up to 1080p although as already mentioned bear in mind they may be difficult if at all possible to connect to a gaming console.
Having said that they may possibly come with one or two HDMI connections. Sound will be the other issue and you will have to sort out some sort of external sound option. lastly having full HD on anything smaller then a 32" is probably pointless unless you're sitting right up close to the display.
I currently have my late 2009 Mac Mini connected to a 32" full HD Sony TV via HDMI and it works great. I don't really use it for games though as I have a PS3, 360 and a Wii for that. The Mini goes through my Onkyo surround sound amp to my TV detects it as a 1080p TV. As it's going from mini display to DVI to HDMI I use a separate external JBL 2.1 sound system connected directly to the Mini for the sound. Apparently the Mini is capable of outputting digital surround sound but I've not looked into that yet.

  • Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5

Anyone know when Apple will bring out a patch to fix the volume problem you get on mac mini after downloading OS 10.8.5?

Only Apple knows the answer to whether or not there is a verified problem and if so when will a fix be released.  As is their custom, Apple does not talk about these things and the rules of these communities prohibit speculation about future udates or upgrades. It is probably safe to say if a fix is deemed necessary it will be called OS X 10.8.6.

  • How can i get mynew mac mini to use the drive in my old mac pro

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive.   So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire.  I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine  both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive.   But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much.  yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive.  Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers.   I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

  • ITunes Library is locked on NAS - Config = three PC's and one Mac Mini

I have just purchased a mac mini to compliment the familys three laptops.
My itunes media and library are stored on a NAS and previously all the computers (running Windows) could access the library simultaneously. However now I am not able to open a iTunes on the Mac Mini and a Windows laptop at the same time, the 2nd compputer to access, whether it be the Mac or the PC  gets the message "The iTunes Library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."
My sole intention of getting the Mac Mini was to have itunes permanently open on it so that my ipads etc could access the DRM content. so to keep closing iTunes on the Mac is not realy an option.

    See above message.

  • Wondering whether to get a mac mini starting at $599 or a mac-book air 11 inch.

Hi I'm wondering whether to get a mac mini 2012 starting at $599 or the 11 inch macbook air (newest version as of this post. For about a year and a half I will use it for light gaming (minecraft) and miscellaneous web surfing (Youtube, and other teenage time wasters. NO MASTERBATION JOKES PLEASE) but in a year and a half I will need it for school projects, traveling, and video/photo editing since im heading off too college. This is a hard decision because it is my hard earned money and im spending only about 600-1000.

I have both the Air and Mini, and 2 mac minis.  I honestly cant decide between either of them,...my Mac Mini is the best desktop I have ever owned, however its purpose is almost totally different from that of my AIR, which is for travel, etc.
Since YOU are heading off to college and traveling, Id certainly get the AIR, between the two.
Both have the HIGHEST used resale value of any other laptop / desktop.  Both are great choices.

what iphone should i get im a young teen want as cheap as possibly thinking of getting one on kijij should I?

No. Get one from your carrier or from Apple. Most of the cost will be the monthly service, not the cost of the phone. Many carriers will give you an iPhone for free if you agree to a 2 year contract.

  • How to clone one mac mini and restore on another

    Hi,
I have 2 mac mini's. Both are version OSX 10.6.8.
Is it possible to backup one Mac Mini and fully restore on the other so it is an exact clone? So software, files, user accounts, settings etc. would all need to be backed up and restored from the source machine to the target machine
    Cheers

    See:
    http://nyacomputing.com/how-to-create-a-bootable-clone-of-your-mac-hard-drive/
You can use Disk Utility if you boot into recovery as described in the article
If you want to cone one Mini to the other, Boot the source Mini in recovery and the other one in Target Disk mode and connect the two via firewire

  • Just going to get a Mac Mini...

Hi guys and gals! I'm really excited right now, as I am going to get a Mac Mini in 3 days! My first Mac! I'm also going to pick up a 17" display the same day from Dell or Sony. Wow. I can't really express my enthusiasm in words and I keep belaboring the point that I am very excited!
    Here's my setup:
    1.42GHz PowerPC G4
    512MB DDR333 SDRAM
    ATI Radeon 9200
    32MB DDR video memory
    80GB Ultra ATA hard drive
    Combo drive (DVD/CD-RW)
    DVI or VGA video output
    Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth
    Also, I had some questions:
    - What do I use for extracting files from a compressed folder in OSX? For Windows I use Winzip and Winrar.
    - I occasionaly edit video, maybe 3 times a month max. Will iMovie do fine with 512MB RAM?
    - With 512MB RAM, will I experience repeated delays and "lag"?
    Thanks,
    Vikram

    Hey, Vik;
congratulations on getting your Mini (or when you do..)
I couldn't encourage you strongly enough to get 1GB of RAM..I have a Mini on its way to me, and I ordered it with the full 1GB of RAM. This time, I bought the Apple RAM as it's not really that expensive, and will avoid the "take out all 3rd party RAM" suggestion apple provides in case of troubleshooting.
I'm downgrading from a pair of DP 2Ghz G5s, and do video editing; plan to do so on my 1.42ghz mini. I'm booting from an external 7200 RPM FW drive, and expect to do video just fine—tho, obviously much slower than on a G5!
Consider that a few years ago, a 1.42Ghz anything would have been considered a fantasy dream machine, I feel that I and all Mini users need to look at what we throw at the machine to get the most out of it. Maybe you'll have to be satisfied with fewer processes going on at once on your Mini, or maybe you'll have to trim your video clips more exactingly, not chuffing the burden on the Mini to blast thru the calculations on things you don't need it to do.
Bottom line is, the Mini is far more capable than the recommendations. I edited video on a 600Mhz Snow iBook; this Mini eats that iBook for lunch.

  • Can't get 2005 mac mini to see 1.8 MSata Drive

Hello I got an old mac mini g4 from my grandparents after I upgraded them to an iMac. I have been upgrading the parts because it's so old. I added the bluetooth/airport Mezzanine Board. and bought a PATA to Msata adapter and a 1.8 Msata Drive. I could not get the drive to be recognized so I put it in a usb case and formatted it and installed leopard on it thinking the drive needed to be formatted. then I installed it but still no luck I have tried starting up and holding the OPTION key to select the drive but it still does not recognize it. All I get is the mac/? Folder. I installed the old drive back in it and it boots up fine. Here are the parts I bought maybe the parts aren't compatible.
    The SSD
    The Adapter

Hi, I think one of the problems is that it's SAT3 6 Gb/s, & your external case can negotiate the step down in speed, whereas the old Mini & IDE converter cannot.
    Here's one that works...

  • Getting INTERNAL mac mini modem!

I bought my Mac Mini a couple of weeks ago from a retail store and they didn't have any models with modems in them. This usually isn't an issue but my mac in going to making a trip to a few places without broadband access and I would like to use the mac to send and receive faxes from time to time.
I do not want an external modem, I have no interest in more crap to carry around. If that's my only option I'll ding out an old PC modem and gook it up to my Windows machine.
The Apple store here in SF informs me that yes I can get the internal modem added (they even quoted me a price) but they told me they were out of stock on the parts and that I should check back with them from time to time to see if they get any in.
Ok, I don't know how Apple's stores run but most places aren't going to order any parts like this and just have them on hand in case someone wants them. They order them as needed unless the part is in constant demand.
Now I am going to try and talk to them in person today and see if they'll order the part for me and then I just bring the machine in and have them install it.
How the heck do I go about getting this done? I don't think I can order the part from Apple directly (I am going to give that a try in a minute) but I'm doubtfull they'll just send me one and instead send me to the store or a repair center at which point I'll go around with them again.
    Any ideas?

That is the add-in board for the 56K modem that plugs into the riser on the mini's motherboard. It is the same one as used in the 1.33, 1.5 GHz Aluminum 12" PowerBooks, the 1.2, 1.33 GHz G4 12" iBooks, and the 1.33, 1.42 GHz G4 14" iBooks.
From an outside vendor you can by them for $24.95, I do not have the Apple Store price handy though.
Installation as you may see will require removing the mini's case and components in order to plug the modem add-in board onto the motherboard.
Step-by-step instructions are on this web page.
Mac Mini 1.25 Mac OS X (10.4.3) NO Norton Software + NO Antivirus Software = NO Problems on your Mac
