I am thinking up buying a new 15in MBP. What can be restored from my current Time Machine Back up?
This will be my second MBP, so first time to try migrating.
Can Time Machine restore software like SEE Finance, Microsoft Office, Norton, Adobe Lightroom from my current MBP? Or does it just migrate data.
How do I migrate my iTunes over?

Setting Up a New Mac From Two Different Time Machine Back-ups?
Greetings Apple People,
I am planning on getting a new iMac. Right now my wife I are still using our separate MacBooks from college. Both of them have Time Machine back-ups. We would like to setup our new iMac to have two different users. Is it possible to setup each of the users on the new iMac from our respective Time Machine back-ups?
I know you can do this seamlessly with one Time Machine back-up, but can you do it from two different back-ups, essentially merging the two, while keeping the separate user profiles?
Thanks!Follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide using one computer as the source on first boot. Then, hook up the second computer and use the Migration Assistant to transfer the second user account and nothing else. Don't use the TM backup because it's much slower doing it that way than directly from each machine.

Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed on initial setup, USB cable popped out Now can only access disk utility as won't load to log in screen. The only has the option in disc utility is to re-install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow or loading another time machine back up but after an hour of it processing, that didn't resolve the issue either! The time machine back up is the latest back up of my Mac Book Pro which was using OS X Maverix. I'm guessing I'm going to have to take my Mac to the store but that would be a hassle so does anyone have any ideas?
Follow this guide using another Mac.
Insert your newly created Mavericks USB into you Mac, press the power button and then hold down 'option,' until it gives you an option to boot from the USB. You will then be able to erase the internal disk with Disk Utility and reinstall Mavericks straight after.
After that you should be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your applications and user data. -
Can I use a mountain lion time machine back up on new mavericks macs?
My macbook retina was stolen at my school. I was wondering because I used time machine having mountain lion, does it affect anything when if i purchase a mavericks macbook pro? the just announced one. I have all my pictures (iphoto) in that last back up. Can i use a mountain lion time machine back up on new mavericks macs? My macbook retina was stolen on August 16? So I don't know if there was an update on my mac that might affect it in any way...
It's ok you can use your ML TM to transfer your account. iPhoto library and other things will be upgraded when you open the apps.
At the end of the Apple article it says:
Migrating a Time Machine backup to a new Mac
When you get a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made. When you start up your new Mac for the first time, the Setup Assistant asks you if you would like to restore from backup. If you've already set up your new Mac, you can use theMigration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities) to do the same thing.
After Migration Assistant completes the transfer and you select your existing Time Machine backup drive, you will be prompted with "Inherit Backup History". Once selected you will be able to continue to use your existing Time Machine backup on your new Mac. -
O.k. So my main hard drive died on my iMac and I had to replace it. I have my old system backed up on my external with Time Machine. How do I access it to get my old files back on my new hard drive? I have read multiple forums and I have yet to find a solution. I was told that when I first turn the computer on and get to the third screen, it would ask me if I wanted to restore from a previous back-up. It did but it didn't show my external until I went through the set-up and got to my home screen. The drive showed then. It also asked to install updates...and I did. So everything is up to date. I have not turned time machine on yet because I'm affraid that if I do, it will erase my old back-up on my external. I tried using the Migration Assistant in Utilities and all I get is the spinning wheel when I tried to get that to work. So now I am here asking for help. I'm not very hopeful that I'm going to be able to get all of my old files back... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for the video link. I did it pretty much exactly the way the young man explained. The one thing I didn't do was click "customize" as he does and unclick the multiple language support and he also clicks "rosetta" to support older programs. I wonder if that's the issue? The guys at Macmall told me that I would need to update the o.s. before I restored. I did that originally but have since (as mentioned before) erased the main drive. I noticed that when he does his install, his external drive does not show up on the list in which you want to install the o.s. on... should I unplug my external? I'm just trying to look at ever detail. I know the recovery file is there. The one thing it (the external) did say before I started posting here was "in progress". I'm not sure what that means? I promise I'm not an idiot. I consider myself an above average user. I usually help other that have issues... but I've yet to restore from a Time Machine back-up and I'm looking forward to learning how to do it.... the right way. I appreciate all of the advice. I have some pretty important files on my external back-up. I am really hoping that this is possible. I'm beginning to think the external is where the issue lies. The "in progress" next to the file name concerns me. I know there's a lot of data on the drive because it's nearly half full. So there's stuff there....

Can I restore a new hard drive from a previous time machine back-up?

My MacBook Pro 13 inch is 4 years old.
The computer began to freeze/stop working, so I took it to an Apple care centre and they informed that my hard drive has crashed and has to be replaced.
Luckily, I backed up my old hard drive a few days before with an external hard drive using Time Machine. My question is: can I restore this new hard drive with my old time machine backup that is on my external hard drive? If so, how do I do this?

I plan to replace the dead 1tb iMac with a 500mb MacBook Air plus external hard disk.
While I wait for my new machine to arrive I can't look at my backups, but will it be simply a case of removing substantial folders of data fom a backup in order to create a backup of the appropriate size?I did this by using a second external hard drive because I knew I'd never pare down my 2GB of data to a 256GB MBA SSD. But you may be able to do it without the second drive.
Without a second drive: this may work depending on your circumstances. When you migrate you can select individual accounts and folders but your choice to migrate applications is all or none. So if you can select individual folders and your apps (and I assume you want to migrate your applications) and get it to fit you are fine. Make sure you select your Library folder no matter what. Once you've migrated you can delete additional files and some applications you don't want/need and you can always come back later with TimeMachine to restore selected files and folders.
With a second hard drive that is large enough to hold everything on your iMac: connect TM and the second drive and restore to the second external drive. Now go through the restored external drive and delete files and applications you don't need on the computer. When finished reboot the computer in Recovery mode and restore the computer using the external drive as your source. -
Hi... I am a freelance filmmaker. Now I have 2008 model mac pro and I am thinking to buy a new macbook pro 15 inch retina display. Do you think its worth for it? I aim to use the macbook mainly for video editing, video compositing (after effects) and photo editing. My current old mac pro has 12 GB and the graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB (Yes I still use it). My main question is, do you think its better to move to macbook pro or upgrading the old one? Making it 32 GB of RAM and buy a new NVIDIA cuda capable graphic card? I dont have enough budget to make it together... Want to hear your suggestions...
I'm not sure, I've seen pro animators use MBPs but usually with a large monitor. Especially doing video editing, compositing and editing it might make more sense to upgrade the Mac Pro to an SSD as the boot drive. What kind of CPU setup is in your Pro?

What you do takes a lot of CPU, RAM, graphics and boot disk power.

Thinking of buying a new iPod, do I have to delete the songs already there?

This is probably the completely wrong forum for this question, but I don't know exactly where to put it.
The thing is, I have an iPod mini (green) with 4 GB, which now is full and I am thinking of buying a 60 GB one. Last year I got a laptop, and when I was to connect my iPod to it, I had to delete all the music from the library in the stationary computer in order to install iTunes on the laptop. I tried to plug in the iPod to the laptop, but it only said that "This iPod unit belongs to another music library. Do you want to delete all content in order to download the new songs?" or something similar. This meant that I lost about 1200 songs, and pretty much had to start all over again.
Now that I'm thinking of buying a new iPod, I am wondering if anyone could answer me if I'll have to do the same thing as I did when I got the laptop. Does a new iPod belong to another music library, and can't just be set up with the one I've already got?
I'd really apriciate some help here, especially if someone have been in the same situation. It has to be possible to get a new iPod without having to delete all the songs you've saved in iTunes.

Windows 2000If an iPod is set to update automatically it will be associated with a particular library. If you connect that iPod to a different computer or a different library on the same computer you get the the message you are referring to. "The iPod "iPod Name"is linked to another another iTunes music library. Do you want to change the link to this iTunes music library and replace all existing songs and playlists on this iPod with those from this library". To use an iPod on multiple computers you change the update method to "manually manage songs and playlists". You can also use multiple iPods on a single computer so you will be able to connect both of your iPods to your existing iTunes. Connect the new iPod and follow the on screen instructions, iTunes will open and update your iPod.

The iPod offers three ways to transfer music from your computer. You can select one of the following update modes from the iPod Preferences menu in iTunes (Edit=>Preferences=>'iPod' tab):
1) Automatically update all songs and playlists. This is the default mode, in which your entire music library, including playlists, is automatically synced to your iPod. If the music library on your computer exceeds the iPod storage capacity, you are prompted to select a different update method.

I am thinking of buying a "new" iPad but I have a very large iPhoto library which I would like to keep intact and be able to view on my new iPad. Is there a way to use a external storage device to store the iPhoto library and view it on the iPad?
You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

Thanks for the help. Now I can feel comfortable in not having to sign up for cellular when I buy, esp. Since I'll be using my new IPad mostly at home on my Cox wi fi. Then I can see, in using the i pad, how often I'd actually use the cellular, and where. This can help decide which type of cell plan I get. Small problem it may seem, but a very helpful answer. thnksIf possible, I'd make sure to register it on Apple's online system at first start IN THE STORE, and verify it is a kosher serial number before walking out. That way you'll be sure to be covered by the warranty. If the machine is fake, Apple's system won't accept the serial number. If it is stolen and already registered to someone else, it won't accept the repeat registration.
