I am trying to decide on which Mac laptop I should get

nobody can tell you without knowing your parameters of usage
If mostly photo and video editing (or a lot of same), then get a higher end pro.
If casual typical use, the Air is a powerhouse of which many are fooled by its slim size thinking it cannot do much, when in fact its a full powered notebook that amazes most people first time in use.
recommend 8GB min. RAM on either model.

  • Which Mac laptop is best outdoors?

Which Mac laptop has the best screen for daylight outdoors?

no laptop is a great winner in bright sunlight. however having both, the Air has more contrast and easier to make out, using it outside, which Ive done on some occasions.

If the sign does not go away it has not completed the restore. So you are incorrect when you say it "keeps completing the restore" if that message is still displayed.

  • Advice on which Mac laptop to buy / Advice about using WIndows on it.

I'd appreciate some advice on which replacement laptop to get for someone in my family who just needs e-mail, the Internet, and iPhoto--something simple, small, and portable, like the iBook or the MacBook Combo. However, he has just complicated matters by saying that he'd like to be able to use Windows on his new computer (yech).
I don't know anything about using Windows on a Mac, not even whether this feature is now built into all Macs or not. A recent post I found on virtualization (February, 2006) quotes Microsoft as saying that Virtual PC won't run on an Intel-based Mac (MacBook), though it will on the iBook and the Powerbook.
Here are the questions I'm trying to answer: (a) Is running Windows on the MacBook Combo an issue? If Microsoft doesn't make virtualization for the MacBook, are there other companies who do? (b) Are there features/lack of features on a MacBook that mean it makes more sense to get the least-expensive iBook instead or vice-versa? Again, simplicity and ease of use are the goal here, not state-of-the-art technology. (c) Can you even buy a new iBook or Powerbook any more, since the Apple website seems to feature only the MacBook?
Thanks in advance for suggestions about any of this!

    For what your
family member want to do the 1.83GHz MacBook will be
just fine. Just be aware that if they want to write
DVDs at any time they will have to purchase an
    external DVD writer.
As for Windows, there are two options for running
    Windows on a …
    1) Use Apple's software, Boot Camp…
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
… which provides the ability to use you MacBook as a
Windows computer. Please note that a restart will be
required and only one OS will be available at any one
time. Additionally it is suggested that at least a
20GB larger drive be purchased to accomodate the
    Windows partition.
    2) Use Parallels…
    http://www.parallels.com/
… which uses Virtualisation Technology. This allows
Windows to be used under Mac OS X just like Virtual
PC did with the PowerPC Macs. While this is far more
convenient it's performance does not match that of
Boot Camp although it is still rather snappy for more
requirements. It does vost money where Boot Camp is
free. Again, a larger drive is recommended.
For both Parallels and Boot Camp Windows will operate
at native PC speeds so do not consider an iBook or
    PowerBook.
Thanks, that's helpful. One more question, now that I've looked at the MacBook more carefully: We use dial-up for e-mail and the Internet; this works very well for us and we have no immediate plans to change. Since the MacBook has no internal modem, would you or anyone else reading this say the Apple USB external modem works as advertised?
I see that the Apple USB modem gets very mixed reviews--some people say it's fine, others seem to find it slower than the internal version, and several think it's a piece of junk.
Would you (or anyone else reading this) have any experience using the Apple USB modem for dial-up connection? [That's not meant to be an insult. :-)] Would we now have to expect our dial-up connections to be slower than before? Or do we just have to be sure we have the right settings, compatible server, etc.? Or is the problem Apple's product, and would a 3rd-party product work better?

  • ?s about RAM, Adobe CS3, which Mac Book Pro should I purchase?

I have not yet purchased my MBP, but am curious about the performance of the Adobe CS3 on a 256 MBP. I am trashing my pc for a Mac and want to get the right one for my classes! Adobe CS3 made my computer completely shut down even when I upgraded the ram! It was horrible! I have seen some of yall have upgraded your MBP's to 3 or 4GB. Is this possible with the 256 MBP or do I need to purchase the 512 in order to be able to upgrade the RAM that high? If yall could help me out with this one, that would be awesome. Obviously, I'd rather spend less money and get the 256 and then order the extra RAM to install. Do you purchase the RAM from Apple and does anyone know how much they cost? I've never owned a MAC and haven't used one in probably 8 years! Thanks for your help!

I cant help you on the CS3 problem, but when I bought my MBP I asked about RAM and I'll pass on the same info to you: -
    1) MBP take a maxiumum of 4GB ram and comes with 2 * 1GB RAM sticks as standard.
    2) DONT BUY YOUR RAM FROM APPLE! I was warned about this, the main reason being the price tag! You can buy the same type of RAM direct from I think it's Crucial and save about £200ish. You'll need two * 2GB sticks.
The best bet is to go into an Apple store and have a look at the models on offer before making your choice.
    I hope this helps.

  • Just installed a new Airport Exteme.  Set up was no problem however we have  3 IPads and 1 Mac laptop and cannot get all devices to access Internet. Every reset of the airport gives a different combination of devices allowed access. Any ideas as to why?

Just installed a new airpot extreme with a modem to use as a wireless system. Setup was successful however with 3 iPads and one laptop we cannot get all devices access to Internet. Each reset of airport extreme results in a different combination of devices that successfully connect. Any ideas as to why?

    Well, this is interesting,
Let me tell you coulpe of things I noticed:
    - Are you using LEAP as the EAP method? some config examples illustrate configuriong using LEAP with WEP keys. Forget this and use WPA2-AES.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps4570/products_configuration_example09186a00801c40b6.shtml
    - in some AP configurations (AP1 for example) I can see that:
    wlccp authentication-server client any method_Users
This means that the wlccp client authentication will use the method called method_Users. Let us see what is configured with this method:
aaa authentication login method_Users group Users
This shows us that the method method_Users uses the server group named Users.
let us see what is configured withe the group Users:
    aaa group server radius Users
NOTHING!! it is empty!! so when a client tries to connect it will try to autheticate it against the radius server but the radius server group that it needs to check is empty.
so I think you need to either use the correct method under which the server is configured with the wlccp statement. OR you need to configure the method_Users with correct user group that contains a server.
Check and let me know if that works.

here is how i find myself as a computer user...
i use a computer everyday as a college student... a lot of microsoft programs and internet usage...
occasionally i use netflix but i find myself hooking it up to a tv if i watch or stream off my comp
here is my issue why do i need a retina if i can watch most things on tv now that they have internet integrated such as netflix youtube.
so what would be more useful more hard drive space with 8gb of ram or less harddrive space with faster processor
thank you in advance as this is my first post

I had the same question as I was starting grad school and my old MacBook Pro was just getting too tired and slow.
I visited the Apple store and spoke with four different employees and they each came to the same conclusion- separately- that the Pro was the way to go.
If you upgrade your flash like you mentioned you might want to do with the Air that's great, but with the pro upgrading your flash automatically upgrades your RAM as well, doubling you from 4 to 8. I kept going back and forth over what to do because the difference in price was significant, but ultimately more RAM makes for a much faster machine and it will work better, longer. It would most likely buy me another year or more of a well working machine over the Air.
Cost was definitely a factor me as well, but I was able to use the Education pricing, and I chose to buy refurbished.
Also, in terms of portability, the difference in weight is only half a pound. My roommate has the Air and I honestly feel no difference when I'm carrying hers or mine in my school bag. I'm really happy that I went with the Pro with Retina because even though I probably don't use half of the amazing features available on it, I always have the option to. Plus, not being much of a techie I have so much flash storage that I don't need to bother with my external hard drive anymore other than to backup my files. Really, really glad that I listened to the Geniuses!

  • Trying to add firefox to MAC Apps and I get this error. The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Firefox.app" can't be read or written. (Error code -36)

I have a new IMac with OS Lion. When trying to open some websites they open with Safari by default. I am trying to change this by changing the "open with" default to Firefox but I can't move Firefox to the Apps location.

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?
    Is your data backed up?

  • Debating on which I-Pod I should get!

For the past month now I have been saving up to get a new ipod
video I have about $411 now (be getting another $100 added to my account tommorow) I am wondering if it would be worth it to get the I-pod 60GB for about $435 or Ipod 30GB for about $330 I am planning on trying to convert the video files I have now onto the Ipod like I have a whole season of some shows on my computer and they take up 3GB I think I have like 5 seasons on my computer. I know that the 30 GB wont really be 30 GB it will be like 29.7 GB to start off with and same for 60 GB I not only want to put my videos on there but I also want to put like 2.21 GB worth of music on my ipod. I know that eventually I will get tired of some seasons and will eventually delete it off the ipod so it wont be like I will keep the video on there forever. So should I get the 30 GB and save like $115 or should I spend the $435 and get the 60GB which I know I won't use all the space there (maybe 35-45 GB at max) I really need to know because I am buying the ipod from the ipod store this saturday when I go out with friends!

Well I used up 2.17 GB out of the 3.7 GB you get with the ipod mini. I think my main concern is the video storage. On one hand I know most likely I wont take up the whole 30GB of space with just video but on the other does it make more sense just to go for the 60GB one and have the extra room in case if in the future I will want to store more things on the ipod (college is coming up in a few months)so I may want to just get the 60GB so I have room for just about anything. Also I am hearing about this I-pod swap program where you can trade in your old one for a new one so I am looking into that. If anyone has done the program before please tell me if it went well kinda paranoid when it comes to not trusted internet sites/programs.

The installers are probably in your downloads folder.  You'll need to run them.

  • TS3354 i purchased a film on my iphone and am trying to watch it on my laptop, i keep getting a message that says "you must authorise this computer before you can watch this film", what do i need to do

I purchased a film on my Iphone and I am wanting to watch it on my laptop, but i keep getting a message saying "before you can watch previously purchased items you need to authorise your computer"  how do I do this

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

  • Which Mac's (current) can support two independant monitors?

I am trying to figure out which Mac's (current) can support two independent monitors? I am assuming that a MacBook Pro can only have one with its screen being open. This would make it handle two, but not independent. In clamshell mode would it be able to have two? I want to know if I have two identical monitors which Mac can display on both to have the screens show desktop 1 and desktop 2. Thanks

Depending on what Macbook Pro you have, you can have at least 1 external monitor, and with the newer ones you can have up to 2 external montiors.
The most recent models need a miniDisplay port adaptor for your generic monitor.  You can get miniDisplay port to VGA, DVI, HDMI adaptors from Apple, or some 3rd parties, such a MonoPrice.com and other vendors.
Have you ever seen this dongle? Is it someting apple sells? Thanks
    <http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_accessories/all_accessories/cables_do cks#!>
    I own a mini-DisplayPort to DVI/HDMI adaptor from MonoPrice.com.  I also own a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adaptor.
    Apple sells them as well
To be clear, the Mac Thunderbolt ports accept a mini-DisplayPort adaptor.
You can use 2 Apple Thunderbolt 27" monitors on a recent Macbook Pro using a Thunderbolt cable to the first one, and then using another cable from the 1st Thunderbolt monitor to the 2nd Thunderbolt monitor.
I am unsure about whether you can do the 2 monitor trick with non-Apple monitors, or if you can mix and match a Thunderbolt display with a non-Apple monitor.
Old Macbook Pros may have had a DVI connector, or a mini graphic connector, depending on how old your Macbook Pro is.
