I am trying to download apps on my iPad

The apple ID box that asks for my password lists an I'd name for which I don't have the password. When I answer the secret question answer(my birthday) I'm told it's a wrong answer. They e-mail me a new password but it doesn't work. How do I set my iPad so that the pop up box requesting me to enter my password is for the correct Apple ID?

Did you update your old id or create a new one ? You should be able to log out of the currently logged in account by tapping on it Settings > Store and you can then log in with the correct account. But if you created a new account, then any content that you bought/downloaded via the old account wil remain tied to that old account, and it can't be copied or transferred to a different account - so only that old account will be able to download updates to its apps.

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. Also before I noticed the problem with mail deletion - two things happened. 1) I updated security sofware as prompted by Apple and 2) downloaded Mackeeper and went throught some preliminary scans but did not buy their package. I go ahead and authorize by going into iTunes/store/authorize computer, I verify the information that is given. I go back and try to redownload the apps and I get the same exact message, this computer is not authorized for this device. What am I doing wrong?

I have been trying to work through this problem by myself and have so far downloaded the most current version of iTunes. Frome there when it tells me I have to authorize this computer, I had to not put in the iPad information, I had to authorize with my current iTunes information, and any iPad or iPod, iPhone information. I have several people in the family that have different accounts, so I had to authorize each and every individual account because I didnt know which apps or music was purchased under which user. Many will not read such posts.
Try turning off you caps lock and asking again.

There could be a lot of reasons.
If your iPad is cellular/wifi then there are file size limits on downloads via cellular, 20-50 megs. So if you're on 3G, try it on wifi.
You could have restrictions enabled limiting the rating of the app, or the install of apps.
the app store could be 'having a moment', so simply trying back later can help with that because there's nothing you can do beyond wait and try later.

The 1G iPod can only go as high as 3.1.3. The 1G does not have an internal speaker or volume buttons on the upper left edge.

It's not referencing your iTunes version. It's referencing your device's iOS version. An iPhone 3G has a maximum iOS of 4.2.1. If an app requires an iOS higher than that, it will not work on your iPhone 3G.

Apps are forever tied to the AppleID used to download them.
Either use the original AppleID or delete the app and then download again
using your current AppleID. You cannot transfer an app from one AppleID to
another, nor can you merge AppleIDs.

Yes, I have not made myself clear, I apologise.
I have tried downloading apps from itunes in order to set up a game for my son, when I go to click on a link, be this in itunes, or on the web, Safari revolts back informing the address is invalid. I read by coping a link and pasting into the URL, this would do it, but not so.
My goal then, is to install Minecraft for my son, I would then download an app to allow this but I am unable to get this far due to Safari insulting the address I ask it to go to
The iPad is first generation
OS 5.1.1 Software up to date.
