I am trying to host my own website/mail server

I am pretty new with osx server and from all the info i found was to create a "intranet" per say.. I have AT&T uverse and I am hosting my own site..that part was pretty easy even tho i am not sure if i did set up the DNS server right... i set up the DNS server as the same as my website... I.E. mywebsite.com i am able to visit the site as long as i am not in my internal network.. and i also was able to set up the mail server but I can only send emails and not recieve from my iPhone.. and via web i can not even access the email... can someone help me? I also can not see my calender listed on workgroup under my account.. so i can not access over iphone either...
Can anyone help me?

What do the zone files show in the DNS settings in Server Admin? There should be a primary and reverse zone for the machine name and its network address.
I also recommend using a static network address rather than DHCP for servers. Assign a static network address in your router for the server's MAC address. In the network settings in System Preferences on the server, select DHCP with manual address and enter the same IP address you assigned it in the router. Make sure the router IP address is entered correctly in the server's network settings.
As for accessing it from the Internet, you need either a dedicated IP address or a dynamic IP forwarding service. The IP address in the A record in the name servers for the domain should be fixed. You will have problems if you're using a dynamic IP address and constantly updating your name servers because of the propagation lag.

  • Any suggestions on hosting my own website with OS X Server?

I am currently taking the International Baccalaureate programme, taking visual art as a higher level subject. And my university counselor os suggesting me to create my own website as an online portfolio for all my work, I have a 2010 MacBook hanging around that I don't really use and should be capable to host a server from my home. Just before I go right in and buy OS X Server is there anything else I should know about hosting my own website for an online pro to flip? Think of it as an online gallery. Thanks ahead!

Actually another thing, I'm trying to see what software I can use to make my website, I don't want to use iWeb it's just a little to rudimentary (in my opinion). Any other web development software that is user friendly and can create semi professional websites? Would be best if no coding is involved since I have no idea how to.

  • Hosting my own website/or a few on my Mac!

Is it possible to host my own website/or a few on my own Mac? My isp does allow it and my Mac is at present always connected 24/7

this really depends on dyndns - e.g. it is dependent on the number of machine names they will assign to your 'domain'. Assuming this is some number >1, then you can setup name based virtual hosting in your httpd.conf file for any number of virtual hosts. this number can be large - but i do not know the limit (this should be dictated by apache and the specs of your computer). for more apache doc on the subject, see (and quote below):
    http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/vhosts/name-based.html
With name-based virtual hosting, the server relies on the client to report the hostname as part of the HTTP headers. Using this technique, many different hosts can share the same IP address.
personally, i don't use dyndns (we have static ips and dns here @ work to allow the adjustments), so i can't provide too much additional information. however, a google search and/or experimentation should provide your answer.
    good luck,

  • How can i host my own website through the server?

    Hello,
I am very new to the server and I bought it specifacally because I thought I could host my own website and not have to go through something like godaddy.
How can I do this with the Mac OSX Lion Server? Have a domain name and publish it through something like iWeb?

you will need a static ip address that either points to the server with port forwarding or is on its nic card. You then have to set up your dns entries and point your domain name to your dns server. You can then turn on web services.

  • Hosting your own website, need lots of info.

    Hi,
I have seen another post on this forum about hosting your own website on your Mac, and it wasn't very clear. What do I need, and what do I do?

Yeah, I do. How do I host multiple websites?
You will need to learn how to edit the apache configuration file located at
    /etc/httpd/httpd.conf
You will then need to learn about virtual hosts and you will probably learn to edit your webservers document root path as you gain experience.
have a look at some articles on apache virtual hosts

You will have to configure your DNS (Domain Name server) settings. Usually this is done on an administartion panel web page the company you registered your domain provides. You probably don't want to host your own DNS server, and hopefully depending on the company they will provide basic services to point the .com to your IP at no additional cost.
For the long run, you might want to consider running a dedicated server, or payign for professional hosting, especially when the number of visitors increase.

  • Why is Mail trying to connect to an unknown mail server (and how do I stop it)?

Hi - I'm worried that someone has hacked into my system so that it tries to connect to a fake mail server (perhaps to send spam)? I usually have the activity window open when Mail is running, and noticed that it was trying to connect to an unfamiliar mail server the other day - it was shown as an IP address whereas all the mail servers in my mail accounts have names rather than IP addresses ... so I copied the IP address down and searched for it (196.201.4.6), to find that it is run by malawi.net ... in Africa. I recently upgraded to Mac OS Lion, so initially I had figured that it was showing the mail server address differently, but I couldn't think of any reason that my email servers would be in Malawi!
By now I was getting worried: I checked all my mail accounts to be sure that something had not changed, and confirmed that none of my accounts used this mail server (or mentioned the IP address); and confirmed that the "Connecting to server "196.201.4.6"" activity message only appeared when I first reconnected to the internet (i.e. now when I manually clicked on "get mail") ... which suggests to me that it is a hidden process somewhere?
I don't have a virus checker, but downloaded ClamXav and ran a check on my user folders ... but found nothing.
Any thoughts on what this might be, or - if it is something malicious or externally controlled - how I can remove it?
    Thanks - andy

Hi - "display remote images in HTML messages" was already deselected, so I don't think it was an HTML message connecting.
But your response made me wonder about whether it was something else in an old email that was causing the problem - I had a search and found some emails from back in 2006 (when I did some work in Malawi for CARE) that were from the mail server (mailer.malawi.net = 196.201.4.6) that has been appearing. However, I still don't understand why (six years later) Mail is now trying to connect to this server ... I'm pretty sure that it never used to happen (and I have been a full-time Mac user since 2003), as I always have the activity window open and would have noticed, so it is only since I upgraded to Lion last week that it started. Any thoughts? I could delete/archive the old emails, but I would really like to understand what is happening?
    Thanks - andy

  • Can I host my own website?

I have a website that is just a placeholder, but its used for email. I have about 20 users and its starting to cost a lot with spam filters, fixed ips etc.
Right now I am in the market for a mac mini and wondering if the mini sever will allow me to be the server of my email website and still retain all the functions that I currently have like IMAP, webmail access etc and also if I could add a push application so that email appears on my iphone as its received.
Any help and advice would be great.

Depends on your ISP and your plan with them. Some ISPs block all server ports including web and email. Some have business plans where you can host servers. Some allow servers for non-commercial only. So your computer is capable but will your ISP allow it? And, your bandwidth may be significantly less than if you hosted your site at a hosting company which will have the servers, bandwidth, and connections to handle the demand without interfering with your neighbor's connections to the same ISP as you.

  • Host my own DNS

    Please help me!!!
I have a G5 XServe, running OS X Server 10.4.8. I am trying to host my own DNS on my XServe, meaning I logged into my account at GoDaddy.com and changed my DNS servers to ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com.
I used to have the server behind a router, and just had ports and traffic forwarded to it. Now, I have put it in front of the router and assigned it one of the static IPs (as per my ISP), and can connect to the internet. I didn't have any problems resolving addresses before I moved the DNS at GoDaddy. I can ping the server via ns1.mydomain.com, but that's it. I can't ping mydomain.com or mail.mydomain.com, both of which have been set up in Server Admin.
Here is the weird thing: I wiped out all of my DNS Zone entries in Server Admin, but I can still view a different site I host. When I ping it, it resolves to the local IP I have specified, ie 192.168.1.10.
I've been using Server Admin to set up the DNS service. I've read contrasting opinions on this. Some stating that DNS should be administered through the command line, some that Server Admin is fine. Thoughts? I prefer to use the Server Admin, as I'm not terribly comfortable using the command line (ex-Windows guy. Sorry).
Any insight, help, voodoo hexes are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok , first welcome to mac os x server ,
    About DNS setup.
Since you want to setup your own service you have to keep a few things in mind.
    a) your server machine HAS to have a Fixed IP address : for that you have to configure one of you WAN addresses to that machine : for example if you are provided an adress like 80.200.110.16 with a subnet of 255.255.255.248 your network will start at 80.200.110.16 to 80.200.110.23 since you have 5 ips i would say one address is reserved to your router and shall be kept that way one is your broadcast (probably the end address) the other adresses in between are all yours.
    b) if you can turn off the router's DCHP server do so , your DNS machine is supposed to be your 24/7 at some point and since you might want to run everything at gigabit speed it does not make sense to have your traffic routed to your router at all times.
    2) DNS registration and domain registration; pick your domain from a nice registrar : i would suggest network solutions and declare the following. If you are changing ISP and already have a domain name make SURE you have control of your domain name and/or ask the transfer operated your favorite registrar. If you have full control of your domain's registration your domain change is down to a change of IP adresses in the registrars records.
    a) If you want a new domain name attributed to your machine 80.200.110.17 (your server) during the whole article ill suppose your 80.200.110.16 is your router. Setup your records ,hostnames etc.
    b) Keep in mind any new registration for a domain to get validated takes TIME (about 72 hours) for it to reach root servers , the system just updates itself on a regular basis.
b1) after you have registred and or upated your Domain with your registrar you have to setup your DNS records here follows a quick example of a forward DNS (home server)
db.domain that is the forward zone , this is stored in /var/named

    c) If you are unfamilliar with DNS Setup and pico editing a DNS record i cannot recommend apple's DNS GUI and would recommend menandmice DNS server over apple's not that Apple's DNS server is broken far from it , the GUI is not made to handle anything but a local DNS service.
c1) there is also a free tool named DNS Helper that works great with apple's DNS server , BUT it is at a loss to calculate serials for DNS records ,

    d) Make sure your mac os X's firewall is properly setup your ipfw shall authorize traffic from port 53 on UPD and TCP both in inbound and outbound queries.
    e) once you setup your DNS Make SURE your dns servers wan address figures in your TCP/IP DNS records setup on your main port , otherwise your server might not just operate
    f) if you wish as well to edit your hostname in the hostconfig it will not hurt as well ... it is located in /etc/hostconfig and or you can choose changeip as noted abobe my post by Greg Pearman.
    g) for DHCP purposes you can surely use the Apple's Gateway assistant which works 100 percent fine on mac os X server 10.4.8.
Hoping this helps you in your setup.

  • Web host, mail server and FTP.

    Dear all:
I have some questions and will try to make my post a short one (although the questions aren't exactly simple). I have the need to set up my own web server, e-mail server and FTP server. It is my understanding (and I remember setting another computer I had 2 or 3 years ago this way) that OS X can be used for this without the need to have OS X server installed. I don't need (at least not for the for the immediate future) to have a server for my own local network. Basically all I need is a single computer where (1) I can host multiple web sites, (2) I can host my own e-mail that will correspond in number to the number of web sites (domain names) being hosted and (3) I can set-up as a FTP server so that my clients can log on and download files.
I have used VirtualHostX for virtual hosting as well as PureFTD Manager with good results in the past. I've also found both to be easy to use, with a good and intuitive GUI which is essential for someone with as little knowledge as I have of networking. My question now as to do with e-mail and how to set-up Mac OS X to work as an e-mail server.
Are there any applications you would suggest that would be simple to use, have a simple and intuitive user interface and also provide mailing list services along with e-mail services that you would recommend ? I've looked at a few but most of the ones I have found seem to require command line input and this is something I am not comfortable with. I need an application with a simple interface and allows things to be set-up in a straight forward manner (and preferably free instead of paid).
What would be your recommendations for this project ? Any recommendations, advice and suggestions you can offer will be very appreciated.
    Thank you in advance,
    Joseph

Perhaps you should give people more time to answer.
    1. You do not need a DNS on your server, ask the ISP to set up the MX record as they set up the A record.
    2. Not really enough information in your setup to say either way, but as it takes seconds to do and you have everything else needed - set it up anyway.
    3. Domain name: mydomain.com, Host name depends what you call it. If you don't have a name why not mail.mydomain.com and make you mx record point to that name. Perhaps that is what your A record is already.

  • Please help with Hosting Presenter presentation on my own website

    Someone please help!
I would like for my presenter presentation to play within my own website.
    1)  I have published my files locally to my desktop.
    2)  I have uploaded this folder to a space on my server hosted by hostgator.
Now that the files are there, how do I make the presentation play so that users can see this?  I would like for users to click on a hyperlink that goes to the presentation.
I've tried using iframe but cannot get it to work.  Which file should I call?
Detailed instructions would be VERY helpful!!!
    Thanks!

First you create your Presenter project and then publish it for My Computer /
The on your website, create a sub directory off of your root web site:
    http://www.yourwebsite.com/new_dicrectory
Then upload your project to the new subdirectory.
Point your browser to http://www.yourwebsite.com/new_directory and the index.htm file will load automatically and run your project from your web site.
It will also work if you point to http://www.yoursite.com/new_directory/index.htm.
    Good luck.

    Sirs,
The below URL came up immediately when I tried to access our Newfangled website this morning http://vdha.us :
    http://surveyprizecenter.com/survey/claimgift-GT-kw-7b.php?t202kw=Vdha.us&trimmedKeyword=Vdha.us
I prefer to use Firefox and very seldom use IE-9. but now I might be forced to remove Firefox 4.0.1 and resort to using IE-9 because of this situation.
I don’t know how spammers can use our website to exploit their spamming, but I can only imagine the complaints I am going to get from our Board of Directors and members about this.
Can you make them stop, or at least explain how it is that anyone can do this without our permission.
We have never allowed advertisement on our website and don’t plan on starting now.
I am now also getting many words that are purple with two lines under them, and when you mouse over them, a new spamming window opens automatically trying to sell something. How do I turn this off?
I would appreciate any expediency in the return of an answer that you can provide.

The "MySearchDial" app needs to be removed in 4 places.
    1) Go to "add / remove programs" in your windows control panel select mysearchdial and remove it.
    2) Open your Firefox browser then click the Firefox tab at the top left and select options. You will need to change the start page settings back to your preferred start page.
    3) Again under the Firefox tab select "add-ons". In the add-ons manager you will need to remove mysearchdial from both "plugins" and "extensions"
    4) In your search bar (top right of address bar" use the drop down menu and select "manage search engines". You can restore your preferred search engine and remove mysearchdial from the menu.
This should remove all the components of the nuisance hijacker and restore your browser back to your preferred settings. If you are comfortable with a more in depth removal I would also suggest going to your "programs" folder within the "C" drive of your machine and deleting the "MySearchDial" folder altogether. However, only do this AFTER you have uninstalled it from your system and if you are familiar with this type of removal.
