I am trying to install xcode on a macpro running OSX 10.6.8 . It installs, but with the error that there is no unix support.Do I have to upgrade to Lion 10.7 to do this? And if so, is this a free upgrade if I have the extended 3 yr support?

Xcode 4.x cannot be installed on Snow Leopard. You need a 3.x. So if that is what you used then yes, you need to install lion. If connect.apple.com still alows registration or logins using an existing appleid then you could download the last xcode 3.2.6 for free.

That's a waste of time. Contemporary versions of OSX do no longer support PPC applications and even if they did, this would still apply:
Error: Activation Server Unavailable | CS2, Acrobat 7, Audition 3
You simply need to buy new software. there is no way around it.

Trying to copy photos in folder on desktop to a flash drive but keep getting error that there is not enough free space when there is. I read to delete trash with the flash drive in but that still doesn't work. Help!!
How is the flash drive formatted? Open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities) and see how it's formatted - that might be the problem.

since installing Lion I keep getting the error message 'there was a problem connecting to the server. URLs with the type 'file:" are not supported"' How can I fix this?

You're ignoring context. On the old Apple Discussion Groups I never posted replies like that, instead giving people relatively detailed answers. After upgrading to Lion, I went to open Mail and received the message that it needed to upgrade my Mail database - this may take a few minutes. The bar shows it is about 1/5 along and has been there for over 10 hours.
I tried quitting and starting again but it just jumps back to the same spot.It is quite large, but I have tried two of the fixes suggested and things now seem to be moving along.
(I was unable to seach properly before which is why I posted the question - it was a bit of a panic) -

I've got a similar problem. iTunes v10.2 worked fine, but when I tried to update it to 10.5 I got a 'Bonjour' error. I eventually solved that but I still couldn't upgrade to 10.5, so I deleted every single Apple, Quicktime, iTunes, etc file on my PC using Revo Unistaller (because the normal Windows Add/Delete programs wouldn't work) but now, when I install the latest iTunes version from scratch (on XP SP3), it says: "the installer encountered errors before it could be configured.... your system has not been modified"
Any ideas?

Never rely upon the iTunes Store to always have your purchases. Always keep a copy of everything safe on a backup drive at home.

I've done all of this and it won't open. I double click on it, the default program to open it is diskimagemounter and nothing happens when I double click. Any ideas? (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4)

Safari tries repeatedly to open a page. The page partially opens but then Safari reports that there's something wrong with page and I get an error message. This is happening at too many web sites for one site to be having issues.
I have a similar problem, Safari cannot load a complet page. It stalls e.g. ["38 of 42"]. sometimes it will complete loading after a long wait. just as often it will never complete the page,
The same thing happens in chrome and firefox but safari on my iPad works just fine.
I have the latest version of everything
I assume there is a system problem but cleaning up permissions does not help -
