I am trying to partition my new T500 help

When I bought it the first thing I tried was my old version of partition magic. It said I have errors which look like the hidden partition.
When I look at either partition info or windows disc manager I see that there are two partitions 1. is very large and ntsf format and the next one is about 5 GB and fat 32 format.
The errors appear to be related to the fact that the file start at head 32 and sector 33. also that they after vthe end of the disc.
How can I fix this so I can add a few partitions. I don't want to ruin the recovery area or ruin the ability to recover?
If its helpful I can try to attach the partition info.
The software that I have is windows xp prof

First of all, I have to ask, why to you "need" to install a fresh copy of OSX?
This may mean that your hard drive is failing, so hopefully you have a backup.
I'm assuming you were in your recovery partition when you did this.
I would, from the recovery partition, repair your hard drive and permissions.
When to Run First Aid in Mountain Lion's Disk Utility - For Dummies
And then try to create the partition again.
If that doesn't work, you have a few options:
Try a third party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool which may be able to repair your hard drive:
DiskWarrior 4 - The Disk Utility for Mac Disk Repair, Mac Directory Repair, Mac Disk Recovery, Mac Data Recovery or Techtool Pro 7
Try internet recovery, perhaps erase the entire hard drive and reinstall ML.
If nothing else works, then I'd replace the HD and start over.

I am trying to install a new iPod Shuffle and my pc does not pick it up.
My operating system is Windows 8.1 and windows 8 does not appear
in the list of operating systems.

You are referring to OFFICE 2010, not Windows XP or 7.
And which version of Windows do you have?
NEVER begin before you have a backup, ideally one you have tested and know works.
You don't really install Boot Camp, the Assistant is a partition tool utility.
You may just want Office 2008 for Mac.
If you need Office for Windows, perhaps run Windows in a VM like Parallels or Fusion.
Buy some backup drives and start using TimeMachine for one backup, then weekly backup with SuperDuper.
IF there is now a partition for Windows, all you need is to buy Windows, and I would recommend Windows 7 Home Premium (retail) which is about US$149.
Has nothing to do with free space. Office 2010 isn't to boot from. In fact, you can copy the disc to a folder (1.25GB) and run SETUP from there.

  • Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

    32 GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    OS X 10.7.5 Lion
I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
    Best regards.
    1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
    2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
    3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
    5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
    6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
    7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
    8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
    9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
    10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
    11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
    12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
    13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
    14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Trying to use a new, larger external hard drive for my Time Machine backup.  However, every time I start the backup, it gets started then fails.  And, I can't delete the few files that did save on the external.  Sort of a catch 22.  Any ideas?

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.

MacBook Pro 2010: Flashing folder w/? on not responding to startup keys & I'm trying to install a new hard drive, can anyone help?

Thanks. It started up com that disk but when I went to install it had an error message (didn't get to write out what it said). So I attempted to restore from time machine but it said there was no space, even though it's a new (replacement under warranty) HGST 1TB HD,  so I did what  I think was right and tried to partition the disk but it now says 'Partition faild...POSIX report...cannot allocate memory'.  im not sure what to do, and I'm trying to remember how the previous hd was installed and formatted for use but that was over a year ago now. Should have erased the hd first or something?

  • Error partitioning a new Seagate Back-up Plus

I just tried to install a new Seagate Back-up Plus external drive (Mac & Windows version) and when I plugged it in, it was showing a single read-only partition containing the Seagate Dashboard software, and I couldn't rename the drive.
    I went into Disk Utility.
The first heading for the drive said 1TB Seagate Backup+ BK Media
The indented subheading for the drive was Seagate Backup Plus
I clicked the subhead for the drive, hit Options, and used Most Secure erase (probably a stupid move), and then clicked erase, thinking it would get rid of the Seagate software - which I don't want to use anyway, as I want to use the drive for project back-ups and media storage - and reformat the drive.
Then when I went back in, and tried to re-establish a single partition, I got this Error Message:  MediaKit reports driver bundle not found.
And nothing happened. I thought I'd try to initialize the drive. But I'm getting nowhere.
When I plug in the drive now, I get a message saying the disk is unreadable, and offering the option of initializing the disk.
When I click Initialize, I get back into the disk utility, but there's no Initialize option, and both Erase and Partition give me the same Error Message as before.
The drive was originally set up with Master Boot Record, and I think I should probably use GUID Partition Table. But if I occasionally need to access files on the drive, should I use Master Boot Record?
How can I make this drive usable again?
    Thanks -

Yes. You can "export" photos from iPhoto in any resolution you require including original and uncompressed.
There are several options to subsequently import them to your Windows PC but the options depend on the number and size of photos you need to import:
Email them, but all email servers have file attachment limitations so you may not be able to send more than a few at a time. Beware that AOL was known to detect and change photo resolutions while emailing them through AOL. I don't know if they still do that.
Copy them to a USB flash drive
Use Dropbox or other file hosting service - Dropbox has size limitations though.
Enable file sharing on your Mac and your PC and transfer them over a network
These are the first few off the top of my head.

  • Tried to install a new game but got error message "You can't open the application "XIII Install" because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  I have since read that Yosemite doesn't have the program. What can I do?

Tried to install a new game that I bought (Xiii) for my MBP. All system req have been met and exceeded, however when trying to install it I get an error message saying "You can’t open the application “XIII Install” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
I have since read online that the operating software Yosemite has got rid of PowerPC applications, meaning I can't install my new game.
Is there anything simple that I can do to get this game to work. I'll be gutted if not as I have opened the game therefore the shop will not give a full refund, I'm sure .
    Regards
    Simon

A lot longer ago than that. PowerPC apps haven't been supported since Lion, 10.7.x.
You may have just purchased the game, but the developers obviously haven't kept up to date with the requirements for newer versions of the Mac OS.
You have three options, depending on how old your Mac is.
    1) If it were ever able to boot directly to Snow Leopard, you could create a separate partition and install SL onto that partition. Make sure to turn on the option during the installation to install Rosetta. That is OS X's PPC emulator.
    2) If your Mac is too new to install Snow Leopard, then you can purchase and install Snow Leopard Server within a VM, such as Parallels, VirtualBox, or Vmware.
    3) Use a separate older Mac for running outdated software.

  • A question about my new T500...

Hello all -- I am new here, and have a quetion about my new T500:
My new machine is a Lenovo Thinkpad T500, with Vista 64 bit installed. It is a pretty neat machine, as far as I can tell so far. This is my first laptop and my first experience with Vista after years of XP. My general computer knowledge is somewhat limited.
So here is my question. All have in the machine so far is Vista and Microsoft Office Home and Student, along with whatever Lenovo preinstalls. I plan to install Photoshop CS4 and Capture NX but have not done so yet, nor have I downloaded any photos or anything. When I go into "Computer" from the start menu it indicates that I only have 99 gigs free in my 160 gig hard drive! I did a quick add up of the visible programs installed in Vista and I get only about 1.2 gigs worth, and there seems to be about another 1.5 gigs of utilities in one partition. What could be occupying the other 58 or so gigabytes??? Vista cannot be this big, can it? How can I find out what is on the HD other than the visible installed programs?
Any help with this mystery will be very much appreciated. I am mystified!
    Many thanks in advance...

I am sure this has been decribed many times ... but here it goes anyway
If the actual hard drive (*not* partition!) is 160 gig (written on it), first of all it will only have about 154Gb actual space to be used by the computer - just the thing how manufacturers count those bytes.
Lenovo has a restore partition, I don't remember the exact size (I have deleted it), but it would be around 15Gb if I remember correctly. You also have a startup partition probably (1.5Gb). You can find out what partitions you have in Computer Management. Just open Vista start menu, type in Computer Management (into the search box at the bottom), then open Storage --> Dist Management. Here you will see the partitions. You can read around these forums and other places on the internet how you can get rid of the restore partition if you really do not want it. But don't go just deleting it right away.
Vista x64 takes about a good 20 gigs on your hard drive. Do remember, that because Vista 64 includes WOW64 (Windows on Windows) that means that many things are essentially duplicated: once for the 32 bit applications and once for the 64 bit applications. That is why Vista x64 is larger than Vista x86 (32bit). However, you need x64 if you have 4Gb of RAM. However also remember, that when you look at the C:\WINDOWS folder, that inside there are also "symlinks" to files. So if you just count everything you will get a bigger size than what it actually takes up.
You have hibernation enabled (by default), so if you have 2Gb of RAMs thats another 2Gb, if you have 4Gb of RAM, thats another 4Gb of space.
The paging file by default takes up a variable amount of space, could be anything between 3-6Gb (if you have 4Gb of RAM).
So that's about it.  If you add those up (in case of 4Gb of RAM) you get about 46-47Gb of space, at least. Plus any applications and utilities, drivers, etc you have. Lenovo systems by default come with quite a few things.
Windows has probably system restore enabled, which eats up yet again hard drive space.
You can turn things off and tune your system if you really feel that you are running out of space. But until then I would not worry too much about it. You can find many guides around the internet on how to affect various things I referenced above.
If you want to see hidden files (like paging file and hibernation file) you can turn that feature on in Vista. That will certainly help you see most of the things that take up space (not everything). You can find many tutorials by googling, such as
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial130.html
    Hope this helps

  • Questioning about Partitioning a new Internal Hard Drive

I just bought a new Internal Hard Drive, Western Digital Caviar, 500 GB. I am trying to Partition the Drive but, there is a pull down menu which I am not sure what to select.
On "Volume Scheme, I selected 1 Partition from the menu, BUT, what do I select on "Format"?
    It gives me these options:
    1. Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    2. Mac OS Extended
    3. Mac OS Extended (case sensitive, Journaled)
    4. Mac OS Extended (case sensitive)
    5. Mac OS Extended
    Free-Space
I am not sure what to choose here, IF I have to chose anything. All I need is another HD where I will have music samples on it.
Any help would be appreciate it.

For normal purposes, use Mac OS Extended (journaled)

That will help us to help you.
Please tell us also, which contact link didn´t work for you.
As a first aid I would suggest to disable automatic restart in Windows.
Go to control panel, system properties and click advanced tab. There should be a button settings- system start and recovery.
Click on it and uncheck the box automatic restart.

Ok so I'm trying to make a new account, and well I really don't want to put the credit card information. Well, i'm underage to have a credit card? so is it possible to avoid the Credit Card Information?
    Thanks

You cannot avoid putting the credit card info in, but you can set up your account so you will have to go to steps to purchasing something instead of the one click option. When you set up the account , under the store tab click on put in shoppng cart for purchase. When you set up itunes it is automatically set on one click to buy, so you have to make sure you change that setting . I have not had any problems with any charges on my credit card and I joined a few months back.

    Bob,
They did not mean the Store;  they meant the Store menu on the iTunes menu bar!  It is in a row with File, Edit, View, Controls, Store, and Help, as shown below.
If you don't see the menu bar, enable it by holding the CTRL key and pressing B.
