I am trying to sync my iPhone 5 on iTunes but it identifies it as my iPad?  why?

I am trying to sync my iphone5 onto itunes but it keeps identifying it as my ipad.  How do I
change it?  Now, I only get a screen on my iphone showing "itunes" and a iphone "plug" pointing
to the "itunes".  I cannot get out of that mode.
