  • After the 10.5.6 update Time Machine stops working

After the Mac Os X 10.5.6 update Time Machine won't back up my Mac. In an effort fix the problem I deselected my Western Digital External Drive-My Book Essential Edition and then reselect it and I got the following message You do not have appropriate access privileges to save file “.001b63aae271” in folder “Time Machine External”. I also tried to repair permissions in Disk Utility, That didn't work. Then earlier today I found out I'm not the only one with these errors. How do I fix this?

    Hello,
here is what I found on http://programminggems.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/mac-10-5-6/
"1. Click on the magnifying glass in the top right (Spotlight) of the menu bar.
    2. In the text entry field type “Terminal” (in all these steps, type what is in the quotes, but not the quote characters themselves) and press Return.
    3. In the new window that opens, type “cd /Volumes” and press Return [note the space in the command].
    4. Type “ls -al” [the "l" is a lowercase "L"], press Return, and note the name of your backup volume.
    5. Type “cd ” (no Return yet), type the first few letters of your backup volume name, and press the Tab key, then press Return.
    6. Type “ls -alF” and press Return and note the file with a name that matches the error message.
    7. Type “sudo rm ” (no Return yet), type the first few letters of the file name that is reported in the error and press Tab to get the full name on the command line, and then press Return. (Alternatively, you can change ownership as described in my comment #3.)
    8. When asked for your password, enter it and press Return.
    9. Type “ls -alF” and press Return and note that the file is gone.
    10. Type “exit” and press Return to close Terminal (then use the menu to Quit).
    11. Retry the Time Machine configuration."
It works fine for me, thanks Mr Foster!

  • How can i transfer data from old MacBook Pro, which is too old to update time machine, to the newest MacBook Pro?

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and wanted to transfer all the data from my old MacBook Pro, but I get the message saying I need to update time machine on my old one in order to use time machine. However, my old one is too old to update. So I decided to use the cable to transfer, because I heard I can do it that way even though it could take time. But I have no idea what to do...
    Can someone help me?

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake or there's some other problem.
Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)- What to do if migration is unsuccessful;
    MacBook Air- Migration Tips and Tricks;
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

  • I tried to install a new hard drive using Snow Leopard to back up with Time Machine. When I installed the new HD I installed Leopard (10.5) on it and tried to use time machine to restore the backup I had made using 10.6. Kernel panic screen occurred.

I backed up my system using 10.6 Snow Leopard's Time Machine to an external hard drive. I did this because I purchased a new internal hard drive to upgrade my 2007 White Macbook from 80GB to 320GB. When I installed the new hard drive, I installed 10.4 (Tiger) and then 10.5 (Leopard) and once Leopard was in I tried to use Time Machine to restore my backup from 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and received a kernal panic screen directly after the bootup.
The screen had code asking for 10.6, so does this mean that the computer is searching for Snow Leopard? If so, how can I do this? Will a bootable drive with Snow Leopard on it be able to solve the issue or will I somehow need to find a way to wipe out this new hard drive?
    -Steve

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • After 10.5.3 update, Time Machine disk getting set to read-only

"The Further Adventures of Time Machine..."
Since applying the 10.5.3 update, Time Machine (or something) seems to be randomly setting my backup disk (external Western Digital "My Book Studio Edition" 500GB) to read-only which, of course, brings Time Machine backups to a halt. I can generally just restart my MacBook Pro and all is well again but then after a few more hourly backups, it will go back to read-only status again. There's a couple of things about this that are odd:
    1) Even if I open "Get Info" and try to reset the permissions on the drive, I'm locked out of doing so even though I'm the admin. What's even odder (more odd?), my user and "staff" show read & write but about the user name list, it states "You can only read"!?
    2) I have this disk partitioned and even the partitions are read-only. Disk Utility reports the entire disk is locked.
Like I said, this has only start happening since 10.5.3 update.
    Regards,
    Terry

    Here's the latest:
Also, the time machine back up drive had been smooth sailing since I hooked it up. Never had an ounce of problems until 10.5.3.
    Format is Mac OS Extended.
    Thanks.

    Thaks,

This often means the backup is corrupted.
First of all reboot the network.. turn everything off and restart in order.. modem.. TC.. clients.
If you still have issues, hold the option key when you click the Time Machine icon on the top menu and it will bring up verify backups.
    Do that.

Now let's see if we can help you resolve your problem.
    Where was it purchased from?
Was it downloaded or was a disc purchased?
    What is your operating system?
Is it version Photoshop Elements 13?
Did you use a redemption code to get a serial number?
    Did you sign in/activate?
Did you create an Adobe account?

You are not alone. Thousands have this problem, on various models of Macs. Short answer, it has something to do with the disk going to sleep (possibly?). You can't do anything about it and Apple won't address the problem. Maybe you should buy a time capsule. Just keep giving them money and use their proprietary equipment.

  • Should I Update Time Machine

Hi, Should I Update Time Machine if I don't use Time Capsule? I do use Time Machine. New posted update is very unclear on this. Thanks, Rob

Well, not entirely, it does fix some fundamental bugs in Time Machine itself as for support for external drives. (it fixed a bug that i've had from the beginning (Time Machine would not automatically backup on the hour, only manual backups would work.))

  • 10.6.8 update + Time Machine = Finder crashing ;-(

    Hi All,
After installing the 10.6.8 update to my Mac Pro, Time Machine will hang on the "Cleaning up" process. Time Machine cannot be exited from the Menu Bar. The finder may hang during this process, if "Force Quit", the finder cannot be relauched. The following error is presented :
    The application Finder.app can't be opened. -10810.
One user on the Forums suggested backing up and re-formatting the drive. I'm not keen for this course of action. I have tried to copy the Time Machine dated folders onto an internal drive, but due to either a. the number of files (?) or b. The size of the backups this also fails.
Please advise if there is a fix for time machine / finder that does not involve wiping the External Drive.
    Mac : MacPro 8-core/8GB/1TB/sd

    Archive (online) : ~100GB

    Interface : FW800
    Thanks in Advance.
    Matt.

    Hi Linc,
    Thanks for the thought.
Downloaded the 10.6.8 update ( @ > 1GB !!) and re-run. No restart required. No change to functionality of the drive. Going to go with the Re-Format option. When Disk Utils is run - no problems are reported, yet accessing the drive not even with Time Machine switched OFF, can result in the Finder crashing (SWOD), force quit, then unable to restart Finder with the -10810 error.
So it would appear that this is not related to Time Machine but more :
External FW 800 drive vs. MacOS 10.6.8.
    Keep you posted.
    Matt.
