I am trying to use share a Hitachi TourPro 2tb external hd using my Airport Extreme base station. I can't get the hd to appear in the disks section of the airport utility though.

I've tried using a powered and non-powered USB hub without success. Plugging the hd directly into the airport didn't work either. The hd functions fine when plugged into a USB port on 3 other computers so it doesn't appear to be a hd issue. I've reset the airport with and without the hd attached but no success in getting the hd to appear in the airport utility. I followed all of the instructions in Apple's Airport support section but no luck.
All my pc's are running on XP Pro (service pack3). The airport extreame is working flawlessly except for this one particular issue which, unfortunately, was one of the main reasons I purchased it. I've looked through numerous discussions already in the community and tried some suggestions such as attempting to map the drive using the airport's IP address but still no luck.
Does anyone have any suggestions or can tell me what I'm missing in the set-up process?

When trying to troubleshoot my problem I discovered a forum that was saying certain NTFS drives work just fine
Apple support says that an NTFS or exFAT drive cannot be used when connected to the AirPort Extreme.
I suppose it is possible that someone might have been using some type of special software on the drive that might perform a "conversion", but without more details, it is hard to know.
Note: ExFAT and NTFS formats aren't supported.

Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.

You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).

Connect to Linksys Cable Gateway via AirPort Extreme Base Station?

I have the following new setup:
A G3 Blue tower running OS X 10.4.10 is successfully connected to the internet via a Linksys WCG200 Cable Gateway connected to RCN's cable internet service. The WCG200 unit has wireless capacity though it's connected to the G3 tower via ethernet cable.
A second Mac (G3 iMac DV running OS X 10.4.10) is in another room in the office. I'd like to set it up with internet by wirelessly connecting with the existing WCG200 unit using an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS) I've recently acquired. To ensure a smooth process, I reset the AEBS to factory settings and installed the AEBS software (version 4.2) onto the iMac DV. Finally I plugged in the AEBS into the iMac DV using an ethernet cable plugged into the AEBS's WAN port (AirPort Admin Utility advised me to do so).
That's the hardware configuration. Working out the software and configuration details is proving 'niggly'.
First, I used the AirPort Setup Assistant to configure the AEBS. I told it to Set up a new Base Station, then to set it up as connecting to the internet using a Cable modem (the top option of two—the second was to set it up with internet through a LAN). I set up the name and passwords for the Base Station and had the utility configure the AEBS accordingly.
No internet connection occurred. I tried using the Internet Connect utility in the Applications folder, but no button or visible option for connecting via AirPort appeared, as the Setup Guide indicated it should, only a button for a VPN appeared.
I called Apple and asked whether it was even possible to connect to the internet using the AEBS talking wirelessly to the WCG200 unit. A tech told me it could be done by going into the AirPort Administration Utility, going into Configuration, clicking on the WDS tab and inputting the MAC address for the WCG200 unit, then going into the Airport tab and typing in the channel that the WCG200 is using. Note that the WCG200 unit has 3 MAC addresses listed; one each for “modem MAC address,” “WAN-MAN MAC address,” and “WAN-DATA MAC address”. I used the “modem MAC address.
The Apple tech added that it might need further tweaking, but that Apple couldn’t provide this tweaking and that I might check various forums if need be.
I followed the Tech’s advice, at which point the utility informed me that it couldn't use DHCP or NAT with this setup’ and to make sure that the "Distribute IP Addresses" checkbox was deselected under the Internet tab. This I did, but it was already deselected. I told the utility to update the AEBS accordingly, and restarted everything, including the 2 Macs and the WCG200.
Result:
No connection.
Tried it again with the Ethernet plugged into the AEBSs LAN port, still no connection.
Help! Can’t I get the AEBS to even see the WCG200? I know wireless is properly functioning in the WCG200 because another user with a Windows laptop connects to it wirelessly. The Mac Tech also mentioned that this could be relatively easy with an AirPort Express piece of hardware (Card? Base station?) but that it would be difficult with the Airport Extreme Base Station.
At this point we’re willing to spend $100 on getting this up. What would be our best option in terms of equipment, or can connectivity be accomplished with what we have?

In theory using WDS would provide what you need.
In reality the Linksys device is not compatible with Apple's WDS and therefore this will not work.

Airport Extreme Base station cannot connect to Westell C90-36R516-01 DSL modem

Hi,
I just purchased a new Airport Extreme Base station for my 15" Macbook Pro. I set everything up this morning per the docs (all cables are connected properly) but the Airport Extreme is flashing an amber LED, which means it cannot establish communication to the network/Internet.
I'm using an old Westell C90-36R516-01 DSL modem that has been working fine up until now. I've tried switching out the Ethernet cables and different powering on/off combos but nothing appears to work. When I connect the Ethernet cable directly into my laptop, I have to power down the DSL modem, power it back on, and then do several refreshes before I finally get an Internet connection.
I read a previous post about unplugging the modem overnight and then plugging it in the next morning to wipe out the MAC address setting. I will be trying that tonight, but I was wondering if there was anything else I could try in the meantime? Or, is it simply a matter of having to get a newer modem from Verizon because this one is 7-8 years old?

Let's start from the beginning,
The ethernet from the modem should be wired to the Wan port of the Airport...
On page 28 of the users manual it says if the light flashes amber you should unplug the power of the modem, wait a few seconds and power up the modem.
I presume you installed the Airport utility from the disk that came with the Airport?

Open AirPort Utility, select your base station, and then choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. ClickBase Station Status to display information about the flashing light

2 airport extreme base stations later and still no internet connection-

Sorry - yet another beginner with internet connection troubles! (I have read all the posts I could find relating, but without any help).
I have had a Demon broadband account now for about a month (I’m in the UK) and in that time I have purchased a D-Link DSL-300T Ethernet modem and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I got wireless internet working relatively easily – with a powerful range over the whole house and garden, but then one Sunday night, the internet connection via the base station suddenly ‘died’.
I spent the following 3 days scrutinising all of my settings of both the Modem and the Base station, re-setting both, and bought new Ethernet cables / micro filters etc but with no luck. (I’ll point out at this stage that my broadband account is still active, and if I connect the Ethernet modem directly to my iBook [wired] I can still get my broadband connection. Alternatively, I tried daisy chaining the modem to the base station and then via an Ethernet cable to an iBook, but no connection could be made).
When wireless, Airport Admin recognises there is a modem there, and under preferences > network under Airport it states I am connected to the internet – but I’m not.
I then phoned D-Link and they confirmed my firmware was up-to-date for use with Apple products and talked me through all of the modem settings and tweaked a few things, but there was still no connection to the base station. I then phoned Apple. They were incredibly helpful (as ever) and after 35 min. came to the conclusion the base station might not be re-setting itself properly. The replacement one came yesterday, and again I spent a number of hours trying to get it connected to the internet, but there is still no internet connection via airport and I can confirm this from both my eMac and iBook.
Reading through the forums on here, I understand that my particular modem is problematic with the base station, but I can’t work out why it use to work and now it doesn’t! One theory I have investigated is that the firmware of the base station is two advance for the modem following an update, but after reinstalling the original firmware I started with, I still have no luck.
- The eMac is running 10.3.9 / iBook is running 10.4.3. The base station is reinstalled with the latest firmware via system update. The first base station and the modem were delivered to me 31/10/05.
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated if anyone has any ideas

Would it be safe for me to assume at this stage that my modem is indeed fualty? It contines to work fine independantly, (I'm using it right now) but it can't seem to make contact with the basestation.

Airport Extreme base station vs. Linksys router

Hi all -- I have a tech choice to make and I'm soliciting advice and war stories from those who have been in my place.
I have a DSL connection, G5 Mac and a Windows laptop. I've been connecting to the Internet via a Linksys WRT54G router -- the Mac is connected to the router via Ethernet, and the Windows machine connects wirelessly -- and I've been happy with this setup. I have it on good authority that I'll be getting an Airport Express in my stocking this year; I had done a little research and found that it is possible to make the WRT54G and the Airport Express work together, and was planning on doing some hacking and fiddling to make that happen in the new year.
However, last night my WRT54G seems to have died a horrible death -- all its lights started blinking at once, the Internet connection went away, then all the lights went out except for the "diagnostic" light, and now no lights come on at all. No idea what happened, but it seems pretty kaput.
So! I'm in need of a new wireless base station. I could get an Airport Extreme base station, or I could get another Linksys (or another off-the-shelf 802.11 router, but we'll just use "Linksys" as the catch-all phrase here to mean "not an Airport Extreme base station"). The most obvious difference is price -- the Airport Extreme station is $200, while the Linksys is more like $65. Another thing that irks me about the AE station is that it only has one LAN port. I do like being able to plug in my laptop to the wired network to do some diagnostics once in a while and it'd be a pain to have to disconnect my Mac to do so. And then there's nagging worries that the AE base station might not work as well with my Windows laptop.
On the other hand, I'm sure that setting up the Airport Express would be much, much easier with the AE base station. And I do like the idea of the base station being able to dial up if my DSL goes down (as it does from time to time). Basically, I am tempted by the AE base station feature-wise, but I'm kind of balking at paying three times the price and not getting even a second LAN port. Any advice, particularly from people who have used both types of routers in a mixed network, would be appreciated.

Replace your Linksys with another WRT54G. Then you can hook up your anticipated AX as either a client (connected like a computer), a wireless access point (connected using ethernet with DHCP disabled on the AX), or using WDS:

The Thompson ST585 appears to be a combination modem and router, so you could use one of the LAN ports on that device to connect an ethernet cable to the WAN port on the Airport Extreme. In this configuration, the Extreme would act as a "bridge" to the Thompson, which would function as the main router and supply the IP addresses for the network. You would be able to create a wireless network with the Extreme in this setup, but only the "main" network would be active. In effect, you have two routers in this setup.
If you connected the Extreme directly to a modem only, then it would serve as the main router for your network and you would be able to make use of the "dual band" wireless capability of the Extreme to create a "main" and "guest" wireless network. There are 3 LAN ports on the Extreme that you can use for ethernet devices.

Difference TimeCapsule 2nd gen / current AirPort Extreme Base Station

Hello, I own a TimeCapsule (2nd gen) with 1 TB storage.
I was wondering if the network capabilities of the current Airport Extreme Base Station are worth upgrading to.
I understand that this product does not have the storage, but I was wondering if there's a notable improvement on the WiFi part?

Unless you have sophisticated test equipment, you are not likely to notice much, if any difference in the wireless perfomance of the 2nd Gen Time Capsule compared to the current AirPort Extreme.
The Extreme might be just a bit better in terms of range, but the difference is going to be so small that I doubt that it would be noticed in normal use in a home.

New Mac and Airport Extreme Base Station User - Setup question

I just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday along with the Airport Extreme Base Station. I was tying to setup the airport extreme but have had no luck. I want to make sure I'm connecting things correctly - make sure I'm not doing something stupid.
I have a cable modem and I previously had a Netgear router. The connection from the cable modem that had previously been connected to my Netgear router - I disconnected it and connected it to the Airport extreme base station instead. And then I plugged it in. Is that all the connecting that I need to do? I get the flashing amber light.
Now I did read a few other threads and it sounds like I may need to install the Airport Utility that came with the base station. So I'll try that when I get home tonight. But I would appreciate any other suggestions - especially whether or not I've connected the airport extreme correctly to my cable modem.

Since you changed your network configuration, you should perform a complete power recycle of your network components to allow enough time for them to "synchronize."
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the Cable modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
- Power-on the computer(s)
Now I did read a few other threads and it sounds like I may need to install the Airport Utility that came with the base station.
Yes, you will need this utility to perform the setup and follow-on administration of the AEBSn.

Registering New Airport Extreme Base Station

I tried registering my new Airport Extreme Base Station, but the following statement keeps coming up:
We could not recognize the serial number you entered. Please re-enter it, making sure each letter or number is correct.
I have double checked the serial number several times on the bottom of my Airport Extreme Base Station and I still get the same message when I enter it on Apple’s site.
Does anyone know how to contact Apple by e-mail about this? I can find no e-mail contact information for this on their support site.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe Apple provides support via email, only call-in or directly by visiting the Apple Stores or Apple-Authorized Dealers.

The new Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station A1521 is 802.11ac draft. Will it be able to update to the final 802.11ac spec once it's published?

If it is a firmware update that is required, then likely yes....my opinion. If it is a hardware update that is required, Apple will have to answer that one.
In the past, the draft specifications were in fact adopted without change. No one here can predict the future though.
We'll just have to wait....since we cannot really discuss future products on this support forum.

If it's uncomfortable to the touch, no.
Makes sure the device has plenty of air all around and that it does not have anything on top of it.
It's still hot, then you should contact Apple for a replacment.

Hi I have an airport extreme base station And trying to dial on windows

Ok I have a airport extreme base station the one with dial-up modem and power over ethernet. Well i have people PC as my provider, and can dial the connection on my macbook by using internet connect. but on my hp i can not. I have tried to create a connection type on it and cant figure out how to have it connect like on internet connect. tho i can go the admin utility and click automatically connect and click OK and it dials the connection to disconnect i re click it and click OK and it disconnects but i do not like it that way. So what am i to do and is their a internet connect app for windows. I have also contacted apple and hp and that did not help. Feedback welcome and is needed.
