I am unable to capture 16:9 footage shot on Sony DSR PD170 correctly.

It appears "stepped or skipped".  The audio is in sync, but the picture looks as though a few frames are skipped.  Sort of like the old "Max Headroom" tv show.  I am using firewire cable directly from the camera to the computer.  Recorded on miniDV tape - new.
My Capture Settings are:
Device control: Firewire NTSC
Capture Input: DV NTSC 48 kHz  Anamorphic
Audio/Video Settings are:
Device Control Preset:  Firewire NTSC
Video Playback:  Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)
Audio Playback: Firewire DV
I have FCP 7.0.3
OS X 10.5.8
Camera is Sony DSR PD170
I logged the footage without a picture or audio in FCP, used my camera's monitor.  FCP was reading the TC in the Log and Capture window, and I was able to input In and Out points to log.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Russ,
Many, many thanks for sticking with me.  I've finally got the footage to work.  Checked it by shooting new 16:9 footage and inputting it as well.   Have gone back to the original and discarded the iMovie stuff.
Believe my problem was in my settings when I changed these, everything worked:  Under System Settings.> Playback Controls  I changed RT to unlimited, Video Quality and Frame Rate to Dynamic, and Record to Full Quality, Frame offset is 4.  (I don't know what the frame offset is.)
Under User Preferences> Render Control   Render and Resolution are now 100%, Codec is same as sequence codec, Quality is Best, and I've checked always use best quality when rendering
Sorry, I don't know what the settings were before I began, just know that I changed some of them to these.  Thanks again.

  • Unable to Capture PAL DV footage

I'm working on a project that requires I edit with both PAL and NTSC footage shot on mini-DV. I was about to purchase a plug-in to convert the PAL footage to NTSC, but find that I can't even capture the PAL footage to begin with.
I tried using both a deck and a camera as the source device to capture from and they both play the tape just fine and on the camera's LCD (not a PAL camera by the way), I can view the footage perfectly, but still FCP does not acknowledge any video on the tapes.
I've even tried capturing on iMovie-it tells me that the footage can't be captured because it is 'half-frames' and mentions LP and SP modes. Would this really matter and why does my camera play it just fine?
Also, when I play the tape on the camera and plug-in to a television, the picture keeps rolling, but again, plays perfectly on my non-pal camera.
I've tried switching all pre-sets to PAL, but it doesn't help.
I'm about to make a dub tape with a PAL camera (Sony Z1U) and see what happens, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I have never seen an NTSC camera that plays PAL tapes!

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

  • Unable to capture Mini DV footage through quicktime player 7

I am using the "new movie recording" window on quicktime player 7 to try and capture a tape. However every time I try I get an error message telling me:
This message shows after about every 2 seconds of recording which is strange as it the sort of thing you would expect to see if you unplugged a cable half way through. However this is not the case and i have run a cleaning tape through he camera so it is not that.
Is there a solution to this so I can record the whole tape into one MOV file rather than thousands of 2 second ones? I tried with Quicktime Player X and got the same thing happen with an even less detailed error message.
Possibly recording through an external screen if thats possible?

I suspect that QuickTime's error-checking is stronger than whatever is used in the camera. QT is probably detecting breaks in the timecode than the camera doesn't see.
Tapes can curl for many reasons: age, heat, cold, humidity, etc.
If you can get it to run on your Mac, Mitz Pettel's old Vidi application (http://www.mitzpettel.com/) is great for ignoring timecode breaks. Vidi runs well on my 10.4 PPC Mac; unpredictably on my 10.6 Intel Mac. I don't know how well/whether it works on newer versions of OS X.

  • Can't ingest SD video footage shot on Sony HD camcorder.

Using a Sony HD camcorder model CX500.  Shot/saved 4 minutes of SD video on HD camcorder's internal drive.  Can not ingest into FCE.  Video does not appear in log in capture window.  In one of the folders, there is just a "MPEG" file - which I believe is the SD footage.  Can not open with Quicktime or IMovie either.  What do I need for this to appear in the log capture ingest window?

You'll probably need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component (available from Apple: http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA ) and MPEG Streamclip (freeware from www.squared5.com ).  Once both are installed on your system, use MPEG Streamclip to convert the MPEG file to QuickTime DV (do NOT use DV Stream).  Import the resulting file into your FCE project.

  • FCP unable to Capture Canon GL2

    Hello -
My system is noted below. Final Cut Pro is updated to 6.0.4.
I am unable to capture the video using Canon's GL2 using the current version of FCP. I believe that I have everything configured correctly because I am able to capture audio and video using my father's JVC GR-DV800U video camera. Actually that particular JVC camera seems to work quite well with FCP. But not Canon's GL2. I am able to control camera's Rewind, Fast Forward, Play, etc. So I know that some communication is taking place. However, no picture is present within FCP; no capture either. Instead, I get that dreaded beach ball wheel.
I believe the FCP settings are correct: Under "Audio/Video" settings, the audio is set to MOTU's 424 (for the 2408 MK3); the DV Capture Preset (and the Sequence) is set to "DV NTSC 48 khz"; Video Playback is set for"Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main" with the audio playback set (again) to MOTU's 424 card.
I am attempting to capture the video to an external hard disk drive using the Mac Pro's firewire port located in the back of the computer. Again, this all works using my father's JVC video recorder.
*Given the computer setting and operating system, is this a known issue between the FCP and the GL2??* My GL2 is an older video camera. I purchased it quite a few years ago. *It seems like the GL2 may be the culprit. Yes? No?*
I'm very new to FCP. My background is with SONY's Vegas program (currently I'm up to version 8). Been using the Vegas program for years. My Dell Workstation, unfortunately, is old; it definitely is showing signs of aging. So, to make a long story short, I've decided to invest time and money in a Mac Pro (I use it primarily for music sequencing using the Logic Pro program which I love!) Now I want to learn how to use the FCP which I purchased several months ago. Not being able to have FCP communicate with the GL2 is a minor significance for me, though. I'm in no financial place to purchase a new camera at this time. Luckily, I usually record the video using Focus Enhancement's FS4-Pro with the GL2. So I am not totally dependent on having FCP and the GL2 work together. *Thankfully, the FS4-Pro DOES works well with FCP!!* Too bad I didn't use the FS4-Pro today. Wish I did. UGH
Could there be a work around in getting the GL2 to communicate properly with FCP??
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful insights and suggestions.
    Regards,
    Ted Fiebke

Not all Canon cameras have connection issues, but hanging around this site I've come to recognize their ability to connect in FCP is the most problematic of all the camera brands. If you have a Canon camcorder, and can not get it to connect up with FCP, the following is a way to sort through the issues and get it to work. Some are elegant - some are ugly.
    Before we go any farther
    • You should be using 'Firewire Basic' as the control protocol. If you aren't, go change it and try again.
    • Also, verify that you have a solid installation of Quicktime. You may want to reinstall it using the 'delete receipts' method.
With some confidence that the software installation and camera settings are correct ... the most direct solution is to purchase another, non-Canon device to use as your capturing machine. The (now discontinued) Sony DSR-11 is highly recommended for DV work. A deck will save wear and tear on the camera's lightweight drive mechanism and will allow you to permanently connect a NTSC/PAL monitor for proper viewing. If you are working with HDV, you may have other issues ...
Beyond that, the path you take depends on the model of computer you own.
    1. If you have a G5 tower or a MacPro, capture to a second internal drive with only the camera attached. If you need to move material to firewire drive, disconnect the camera. A second internal drive is quite inexpensive these days if you do not already have one.
    2. If you have a G5 tower (PCI) MacPro (PCI), G4 powerbook (PCMCIA) or MacBookPro (Expresscard 43) with an available slot, purchase the appropriate firewire card for the slot. Connect your camera to the card and you should be good to go. The new card creates a unique bus and will avoid collisions with the external drives.
    3. If you do not have a slot or a second internal drive and you are stuck with the camera, welcome to the camera/drive shuffle.
    • shut down and remove the external hard drive(s) from the system
    • connect the camera directly to the firewire port of the computer
    • start the camera then the computer
    • capture to your internal (system) hard drive
    • shut down the camera and computer
    • disconnect the camera and reconnect the external hard drive(s)
    • start hard drive(s) and computer
    • move captured files to external hard drive(s)
    • edit
If you output back to tape or wish to view your work on an external Video (NTSC or PAL) monitor, you need to set up the camera to use the firewire out as the A/DV converter or VTR - which means reversing the steps:
    • copy the file back to the internal drive
    • shut everything down
    • disconnect the external drive(s)
    • connect the camera to the firewire port (and the TV to the camera if needed)
    • start the camera then the computer
    • play the file.
One caveat here - You may have difficulty getting the file back to tape without dropping frames. Playing files off of the system drive is very demanding and they may have a hard time keeping up.
All in all, if you do not have the option for second bus (i.e. iMacs, eMacs, iBooks, MacBooks) you may want to think about a computer with expandable options next time.
There is the option of capturing using iMovie, but that brings on it's own set of problems and is not recommended.
    Good luck.

  • HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
    Thanks.
    -R

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • Erratic Capture of DV Footage

I have submitted a bug report on this, but I'm curious if anyone has any similar issues with capturing.
This concerns capturing DV footage on a Sony DSR-11 deck. This event footage was originally recorded on Sony DSR-1800 decks using the NTSC DV Widescreen preset. I logged and batch captured 17 clips from a 184 tape, and conformed them to 16:9. The clips ranged from 2 minutes in length to 24 minutes. Of the 17 clips, 13 were recorded on the scratch drive as expected at 720x480. But 4 of the 17 clips were recorded at 1280x480 px dimensions.
Since the original batch capture, I've tried various means of capturing the same clips -- smaller batches, single clips manually, single clips in to out, and about 20-25% of these attempts result in recorded 1280x480 clips. The obvious other alternative is to recapture the wrong clips, and that works - subject to the 20% wrong statistic.
Mac Pro, 8-core, 32 GB RAM, OSX 10.6.4.
Any feedback from PP CS5 users with similar issues or workarounds will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    --Jim Sphar

    Dennis,
I've been using the DSR-11 for about six years, and yes, it is finicky. It loses in-points, and occasionally fails to capture logged clips, but I've captured countless hours of footage from it, and it has never captured a clip at the wrong size with the offending clip sandwiched by two that were captured at the correct size. PP CS5 capture software is suspect on this one.
I have fiddled with the control settings a bit with no joy. I have not yet tried to punch in manually, but I will try that.
Since I have another 3 hours of footage from the same event on a second tape, I'm considering capturing those clips with CS4 to see if I get any errors there. I believe I should be able to import the CS4 clips or project into CS5 for editing.
Thanks for your suggestions. I appreciate your participation in the forums and your tutorials.

  • Capturing DVCPro50 24P Footage

If anyone could help, I would appreciate it. I am trying to capture Anamorphic DVCPro50 footage shot at 24 fps (Panasonic DVCPRO50 Deck). I initially captured the footage with the following captured the footage DV50 48KHz Anamorphic. The footage looks great on the timeline (DV50 48KHz Anamorphic), but it is sped-up. I made a new timeline (DV%) 48kHz - 23.98 Anamorphic)and the footage moves at the correct speed, but I have to render the footage. Is there any capture setting that coincides with this timeline setting? Or is the deck playing the footage at the wrong speed? Where have I gone wrong?
    Please advise.
    Thank you.
Message was edited by: Brian Hunt1

Did you shoot 24p or 24pA?
At either rate, you captured as 29.97 with that preset. Which is why you must render it on a 23.98 timeline.
I'm not sure why it's speeding up the footage, are you positive that is happening?
If you shot 24pA and want to work on a 23.98 sequence, recapture using the DVCPro50 Anamorphic Advanced Pulldown Removal preset.
If you shot 24p, work on your 29.97 timeline with the footage you have already captured, and make sure it is really speeding up.

  • Using footage shot at 24fps

What type of settings do I need utilize when capturing and editing footage shot at 24fps?
    Anyone able tohelp
    Thanks
    Mike

    Well,
I shot the footage already. I shot on the Canon XL2. I was trying to figure out how to capture it. When I set the audio/visual settings and have the timeline set at 24fps then bring the footage in, it needs to be rendered. The only way I can capture and have the footage not need to be rendered is when I have both the capture settings and the sequence settings set at 29.97. I do not know if it will effect my footage or not if I have it playing on the timeline at 29.97.
    Thanks

  • Unable to capture from my Canon hv30

I just tried to capture some footage from my hv30, the first time I've tried, and it say's on the capture screen that the capture device is off line. I have the camera properly connected and its in the right setting, is there some setting in premiere that's i have wrong? I have another program that came with the camera, and it can't connect to the camera either, saying that its not connected. Not sure what to do at this point, so if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome.

This is the most weird camera I have ever seen, you have a miniDV tape camera appartently without a Firewire I/O connector.  I just looked at this Canon specification  http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=1620 6#ModelTechSpecsAct
and there is nothing about a Firewire/IEEE-1394/etc.  Without a firewire interface Premiere is unable to capture video.  apparently there is some software supplied with the camera, maybe it can capture the video via the USB interface to your computer and then (if it is the correct format) you can import it to Premiere.

  • Unable to capture HDV in FCP 6.0.1 from Sony HVR-Z1P

Hi I'm attempting to capture HDV footage from a Sony Z1.
I am trying to capture some HDV footage I shot with the Z1, but FCP simply refuses to recognize the Z1
I'm certain I've got all the settings correct:
    - Camera is set to HDV firewire out
    - capture presets is set to HDV
    - device control preset is set to Sony HDV FireWire
    - sequence preset is set to HDV 1080i50 (I'm in Australia)
    - footage IS HDV 1080i50
But I keep getting the "Unable to Initialize Capture Device and Device Control" popup. I've tried everything
    - rebooted the camera
    - restarted FCP
    - rebooted the system
    - changed the capture/device control settings in FCP and tried out a regular DV deck to make sure it wasn't the cable
    Nothing has worked.
I'm on a MBPro I7. No Kona card or anything like that, just trying to capture through firewire.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Matt
At present it will capture HDV in IMovie but not FCP 6.0.1

Thanks Adrian, since posting the thread I've thought of that too but unfortunately to no avail. From other forums I've read this seems to be a central theme to the solution to my capture woes. I since have sorted the problem it was in Audio/Video Settings.
In the end I set my Audio/Video Settings to:
Sequence Preset to: Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Capture Pre-HDV- Apple intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: Sony HDV 1080i50 Firewire
And hey presto my I'm capturing HD without any problems. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • Unable to capture user comments and responder in RESPOND API

We are building a custom application that uses Oracle Workflow underneath. The application users and responsibilities have been integrated into Workflow. Notifications are acknowledged and responded to directly from the application using the PL/SQL Notification APIs.
When using the wf_notification.respond API with the appropriate user and comment information filled in, we are still unable to capture the responder information as well as the reponders comments. In other words, the RESPONDER and USER_COMMENT fields in the WF_NOTIFICATION is blank. However, the response does seem to go through otherwise. Do we need to set some kind of user context outside of just setting the response attributes and calling the respond API? Following is the code....
    owf_mgr.wf_notification.setattrtext(p_nid,
                   'RESULT'          ,
                   'APPROVED');
-- This procedure then caused the WF to advance to next step
-- Respond to notification, depends on RESULT setattrtext above
    owf_mgr.wf_notification.respond(     p_nid, -- notification id
         p_respond_comment,     -- response_comment
    p_responder     );     --responder role
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Raj

If you are on 11.5.10 or greater or standalone 2.6.4 if you pass the responder value to wf_notification.respond API it should be updated in wf_notifications.responder column. The comments is now updated in wf_comments table against the notification id and not wf_notifications.user_comment column.
    Thanks, Vijay

This will return the name of the plant.
    .getExtensionField("PLANT").get().getDisplayName(session);
Check if this returns the product category
    collectionbean.getExtensionField("ITEM_CAT").get().getDisplayName();
    This will Return the Price
    collectionbean.getExtensionField("PRICE").get().getPrice();
    (return type :BigDecimal)
    This will return the currency
    collectionbean.getExtensionField("PRICE").get().getCurrency;
    (Return type:String)
Similarly to retrieve other fields for which there are no standard functions, use .getExtensionField("Field ID")
    Hope this helps
