I am unable to click on a layer mask for editing. CS6 OS10.10

I have been working on a file and all of a sudden I am unable to click on a layer mask in order to edit that mask. I am still able to do the following things:
Create a new adjustment layer. When I do this a new mask is formed for that layer and automatically selected for editing. I can edit this mask. As soon as I click off of it I cannot go back to it.
I am able to shift-click and command-click on layer masks and get those options/selections.
I am able to drag an existing mask to a new adjustment layer.
Hide/unhide the mask-overlay
Pretty much everything but click ON the mask and have it selected for editing.
I have tried the following:
Closing and re-opening the file.
Restarting photoshop.
Restarting my computer.
Deleting/recreating the preferences files.
Any insight out there?

I discovered my problem by trying to paint on whatever I was selected on. It laid down the mask overlay. I thought about it and realized that I must have bumped the 'Q' key and put myself in Quick Mask mode.
So now this is here in case anyone else makes this mistake! :-)

  • Cannot Apply Layer Mask in Photoshop CS6

First off, let me state that I am a *total* Ps newbie…My question regards the following: In Ps CS6, I cropped an area using the Marquee Tool. Then, I Added [a] Layer Mask from the Layers Panel. Next, I turned off the Indicates layer mask is linked to layer BUTTON, clicked the Smart Object Thumbnail, and moved the image using the Move Tool. Now, I right-clicked on the Layer Mask Thumbnail in order to Apply Layer Mask but it is de-highlighted. This is my problem. I cannot figure out how to Apply [the] Layer Mask. (I hope this all made sense.) Can someone please tell me how to do this in CS6? TY.

Thank you for the quick reply. I started the whole process over again and went through the same steps; and, I don't know if it shows up in the screen capture, but there is, indeed, a frame around the Layer Mask Icon when I right-click on it. The above pull-down menu is what I get when I right-click on it. (BTW, this is for a CS5 online course I'm taking, and this particular Lesson is called "Generating a Non-Destructive Crop." I'm having to figure some stuff out, since I have CS6...) I hope all that info helps.

  • Unable to upgrade to 11.0.1 for AE CS6

I'm having the RAM preview problem (RAM preview needs two or more keyframe to preview) and trying to upgrade to 11.0.1.  I've tried updating via Adobe Application Manager but it fails so I've gone to the direct download site on Adobe.  After downloading the AfterEffectsTrial-11.0.1-mul-AdobeUpdate.dmg and running it, I'm getting a fail error code U44M2I218.
Anyone else having this problem or know how to decrypt the erorr code?

    Error Code: U44M2I218
Just found out this method and it works.
-Mount (open) the Update DMG file.
    - Right mouse click on the AdobePatchInstaller and select Show Contents
    - Expand the Content folder to show MacOS folder, inside it should be the AdobePatchInstaller file
    - Right click on AdobePatchInstaller and select Open With > Terminal
It should run the patch, update and AE should run fine.  Be sure you are logged in as the Admin or else this may not work.

  • Can you designate an image as a layer mask?

I've been wondering if this is possible for a long time -- say I have an awesome grayscale image that I want to use as a layer mask for another layer. Is there a way to make that happen?

Copy your image to the clipboard (i.e. Select All>Copy)
Then Alt or Option click on the layer mask and Edit>Paste

  • Alt + click on layer mask not working/enabled

Im wondering if anyone else has come across this problem and managed to solve the issue!
Basically, when I go to view the layer mask by holding alt and clicking on the layer mask it doesn't function. Along with this problem, when I go to toggle my adjustment layers on and off, by holding alt and clicking on the eye symbol next to the background layer... again this doesn't work.
Im not sure if I have accidently clicked on something that has disabled these functions or its just a bug.
Please, can anyone help with this?
    Thanks
    Dave

Yeah I tried both Alt keys, that wasn't the problem. I could use both Alt keys to do shortcuts and they worked, just didn't work when it came to toggling off and on the adjustment layers and also viewing my mask, when Alt clicking on it.
I even tried opening the file in an older version of photoshop and still had the same problem.
I was about to re-install the program or reset it back to its default settings... then decided to do a selection of the image, cut it out and pasted it into a new document and then dragged my adjusment layers over to the new file. Hey presto! the functions worked.
Think it was just a case of the image or file in general becoming corrupt or just having some sort of bug.

  • Please help with Layer Mask

I have been painting in Photoshop using layer masks. Using the pen tool I would outline my image, control>R-click>select create layer mask, then I would paint as desired. When doing so it would create a grey layer mask background in the layers window and everything would work100%. But now all of a sudden when I do this process the layer mask square turns white and it seems as the mask I have created is inverted. I paint everything but the mask I want. I have no clue how to turn it back to the original grey colour I was using. Please help.

Using the pen tool I would outline my image, control>R-click>select create layer mask,
So are you using a Vector Mask or a Layer Mask?
    Could you post a screenshot?
What are the Paths’ Area settings?

  • Banding in the Layer Mask?

    Hello,
    I have:
    Windows Xp Service Pack 3
    4GB RAM
    Geforce 560ti
    PS CS5 extended
I am a photographer and submit the images to an agency. They inspect images at 100% for technical quality.
While preparing an image today, I used a layer mask in the levels adjustment.I used brush with 0% hardness and just clicked once with black color selected. But I found some severe banding.I alter clicked on the layer mask and found the same banding at 100%.I have not noticed such a thing till date.
    https://dl.dropbox.com/u/42878955/1.jpg
I did try copy pasting the layer mask to show it to you guys, but when I saved it as jpeg and viewed the jpeg file, there was no banding. However I can see the banding even if view the jpeg of the image above.I tried on another images too but the same problem. It used to be very smooth before.Have made no changes to the default settings.Tried with both OpenGL on and off.
    Why does this happen?

When I set 16 bit in Camera Raw from the beginning and then opened in PS in 16 bit, and then did the same processing, I see the banding till I zoom in to 50% but not onwards 66.67%.
So at Actual Pixels the problem is not visible in 16bit?
Just FYI, layer combination for the Photoshop preview display is done for zoomed out levels in 8 bits, to optimize for speed, regardless of whether you're working in 16 bits/channel, unless you have the Cache Levels preference set to 1.
Further info: at least with my GPU, layer combinations in 32 bits-per-channel mode remain unbanded (unquantized) at all zoom levels with multiple cache levels. I dare say there will be a performance hit in some cases but it looks really good.
I would like to see an option in Preferences > Performance so the user can decide whether to sacrifice performance or display quality in greater than 8 bpc modes. In many cases, the reduced performance probably would be unnoticeable or negligible, whereas the reduced display quality can be very noticeable.

  • Copy and paste layer mask into another layer mask

I know there is a way to do this.
How can I copy and paste on layer mask into another.
I need to use the same mask for multiple layers and images.
    Thanks

In the same document, click on the layer mask, option drag to a new layer
To copy mask to a different document with both documents open, select the layer, Duplicate Layer to the other document (destination). Then in the other document, option drag the mask to whatever layer you want, delete the layer you duplicated (you don't need it anymore, you just needed the mask)
Or to copy mask to a different document with both documents open, load mask as a selection. Save selection to the other document (destination). Then in the other document load the new alpha channel and apply as a layer mask. Delete the alpha, you don't need it anymore.
Edit: J always beats me to it

  • Layer Mask Thumbnail Option

I'm using PSE 11 and layers masks.  If you click on the layer mask thumbnail you have the option of "add mask to selection" and "intersect mask to selection".  They both select the same area of the photo. So I use the help menu and go online and type in the same phase with quotes and it comes up no document found.  How does someone learn about a feature in an app and yet don't have information on that feature?  This is where people get frustrated with the help.
So...if anyone knows what the difference is, please let me know or how it's used.  Thx

Using masks and selections are advanced workflows which justify a lot of tutorials and even whole books. Not something a tool description can achieve, especially when it deals with the interaction between two different, though similar ways to select areas of an image.
So...if anyone knows what the difference is, please let me know or how it's used.  Thx
When you understand masks and selection, you know that you can:
    - go from mask to selection and vice versa
    - combine selections (add, substract, intersection...)
The contextual menu you are seeing lets you combine selections with masks without turning the mask into another selection.
    Try this:
    - duplicate the background
    - desaturate the duplicate (Ctrl Shift U)
    - add a mask
    - Paint a part of the mask with black. That part shows in colour inside the grey background.
    - now use the lasso tool to cover a part of the masked area plus a part of the rest.
    - use the contextual menu and you should see the intersection.

  • Layer Mask thumbnails won't activate.

I am using photoshop CC and am suddenly not able to activate my layer masks by clicking on the layer mask thumbnails. I am using Windows 8.1 if that matters. I have never had this happen before. Can anyone give me some help with this ? Thank you.

Bingo. That solved it. Thanks a bunch. I wonder I should I stop processing my images in 16bit. I'm always having to convert them anyway. But thanks again. Now I can get on to what I was doing.

  • Layer Mask Issue, please help.

    Hi,
My layer mask is not working, not sure what's happening. I'm using CS 4 . i want to use blending effect so i place the photos on a white background. I click layer mask on each photo, select brush tool brush on the photo but is not working, is either appear black or white color when i use the brush paint on it. If not wrong, the foreground color should be grey & white in layer mask function but it appear black & white instead. Please see the screenshot below. Please help, thank you

Hi, I will try explain your problem.
In your posted example we can see see that you have three layers in the layers panel.
On each one of layers, we can see, on the left side, that there is the Layer Thumbnail, that is a showing the actual image of your layer and then a Layer Mask Thumbnail (the white rectangle, on the right side).
A layer mask works as follows: you tell Photoshop to display or hide actual parts (pixels) of the layer with greyscale values. A white pixel on the layer masks tells Photoshop to show the image area at full opacity (non-transparent), while a black pixel on the layer mask tells Photoshop to hide the layer totally (0% of opacity.) Gray values will therefore show the image data partially.
But you are painting on the document, and you need to indicate Photoshop whether you want to paint on the image (what you did in your example, and you do not desire) or if you want to paint on the layer mask (what you want to do). This indication is called Targeting. It is done simply by clicking either on the Layer thumbnail, or on the Layer mask thumbnail of your layer. (Clicking different areas of a layer in the layer palette are different orders you give to the program). For instance, if you want to switch the layer you are hiding to another one, in order to paint on its mask, make sure to click on the layer mask thumbnail of the other layer in the Layers Panel.
In Photoshop CS5.5 and earlier, you will see that a layer or its mask is targeted because there will be three outlines around it: a black, a white and a black one again, like the actual layer data in the highlighted layer 0928 of your image. You should see those three outlines around the layer mask in order to paint on it.
In CS6, the target indicator is different, look in my image, we can see that the layer mask is targeted thanks to the white corners: I was then able to mask part of the black layer by targeting the Layer Mask in the layer panel, and then painting on the image where I want to hide the layer.
If you want to modify the actual layer (the photos, in your case), simply click on its thumbnail, and you are good to go!
    Hope this helps.

  • Layer mask suddenly not working, how to fix this?

    Please help!
I have been using the layer mask before and it has worked fine until now. Suddenly it only paints black and white colors, not revealing or hiding as it should. I have the mask layer selected properly. I have reset the brush tool and all the tools. I have the brush mode set to normal.
I tried also the eraser, it paints black too.
    I'm using Photoshop CC.

If you hold the Alt|option key when you click on the Layer Mask icon in the layers palette to target the layer mask Photoshop will display the layer mask in the images window not the composite image.  Layer Mask are gray scale channels. All you can see is the mask Black, White and Gray. Could you have Displayed the layer mask by accident. Are you sure you have the layer mask targeted to show the composite image  or could you have targeted its to show the Layer Mask instead of the composite image.
