I am unable to close an application, even after using force quit

I am unable to close an application called Spotflux, it says application not responding, so I tried using force quit, but it also didn't working.

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.

  • I have a message on my Mac book pro that says "suspicious activity might have been detected".  I can't get rid of it even if I force quit Safari or if I turn my computer off.  What can I do?

I got a message on my MacBook pro screen that says " Safari Alert" and then goes on to say "suspicious activity might have been detected".  It doesn't let me exit the site and keeps reappearing even after I force quit Safari and even after I shut down my computer and turn it back on.  What can I do?

Launch Safari with the Shift key held down. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the computer from the Internet.

Aperture is asking to upgrade library every time I open the application, even after it has already been upgraded.  I just ran the update and it is still not fixed.  What can I do???  My plug are asking me to re-register them too.  This is annoying.  Please help!!!!!

How do you try to start the repair dialogue? By starting Aperture or by opening the Library?
If you not already have tried it with directly opening the library:
reveal your Aperture Library in the Finder
Whilst holding down Command(⌘)- option (⌥) double click on the Aperture Library.
Select "repair library" from the dialogue.
What about Frank Caggiano's questions above?
It would be really helpful to know, how many libraries you have, and if this problem is restricted to one of them.

Try the Firefox SafeMode. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    # You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    # Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
You should be able to uninstall that AOL toolbar extension while running in the Firefox SafeMode.

  • Does always using Force Quit to close programs make problems w/computer?

A friend was over and we were working on my iMac, and I used force quit to exit a couple of programs - and he gasped and said "Don't do that! It will cause problems with your machine!"
He sort of said something about directories - but ultimately I didn't understand why using force quit isn't the same as just closing, or why it would hurt my computer... Does anyone know?... My machine is running slow and has some quirks and I need to do a clean install because a system reinstall didn't help much. But I've also been downloading demos and trials right and left since I got it - which I've just found out is not a great idea and I've found out how to fix it from another forum.
So I don't know if what my friend says is true because I know I've done so many other weird things to my poor iMac out of sheer ignorance that it could be anything......
Is he right? Why wouldn't they give us that warning?
    thanks -
    maggie

The only time you should use Force Quit is when the application cannot be quit normally.
Why don't you just Quit the application?
Force Quit is not a good idea as all id does is stop the application very abruptly, it does not close down files properly or write away preference changes or any other items that should be written to the disk by the application. You stand a very high risk or corrupting the application, documents or your operating system by using Force Quit, especially when there is no need to do so.

  • Can't close programmes except by using Force Quit

When I try to Restart I often get 2 or 3 programmes that refuse to close. So I have to use Force Quit, sometimes several times before I can get them to close. I've had this a lot with the Adobe CS4 suite - I don't think I've ever been able to close InDesign without Force Quitting - but it has happened to other programmes as well so its not exclusively an Adobe issue. I've had this problem long before OS 10.6 - for the last few years in fact - on 3 different Macs. I keep hoping that with each new programme or system upgrade that the problem will get better - but it seems to be getting worse.
I've run Disk Utilities of course. Any ideas, anyone?

If you have not done so since upgrading to Snow Leopard, run Disk Utility and use +Repair Disk Permissions+.
If you had this problem on three different Macs, did you migrate your user home folder from one Mac to the next? Or have you been using the same set of third party software (in addition to the Adobe stuff) that runs background processes? One good test, if you have an external drive you can erase, is to reformat it and install Show Leopard on it. Boot from it and install just the Adobe CS4 suite. Since you are using a new system, a new installation of Adobe's software, and a new user account, this problem should disappear. It is improbable that it is some hardware issue that recurred on three different Macs, causing the same problem, or that Adobe has had a long-running problem they never fixed.
Another simpler test is to create a new admin user account
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
Log out and log in to the new account. You still have the same overall system and Adobe installation, but you are using default user preference files and running only standard background processes (unless you have third-party software installed that runs at the system level). See if you have the same problem with quitting apps when logged into the new account.

    Hi,

Seems this always just leads us to problems...
Strange Sun Java Security Team just won't do anything to help us deploy quite easily on one of the most widely-spread platform ( despite we don't like them that much it's MS servers (2000 and 2003) )
Anyway if one could help... on one of the two issues Thanks

  • Applications will not close.  Have to use Force Quit.  Why?, Applications will not close.  Have to use Force Quit.  Why?

I notice alot that when I click on app icon in the dock and choose 'Quit', the application does not quit.  I eventually have to go to Force Quit to make it close.  Any idea as to why this happening and how to avoid it?

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    Does that change anything?

  • Why substitution strings are keeping old value in translated application even after seed/publish?

    Hi,
Recently I have notice a small but from the point of view of our customer "big" issue. We have defined in our application some substitution strings to keep more detailed information about the version of the application. They are later used in page templates to show mentioned info to the end users. Recently I had to update value of one of the substitution strings. The change is immediately visible in main application. Unfortunately it is not the case for the translated application. For some reason old value is kept. Even after doing "Seed" -> "Apply translation file" -> "Publish". It is still preserving the old value. I have tried to use "Translatable" checkbox in the template. In the translation file it is showing properly substitution string in the "source" and "target" tags but still it is resolved to the old value.
We are using APEX 4.2.2.00.11 running on 11g.
Waiting for any suggestions as maybe it is me forgetting about ticking somewhere additional "checkbox". Thank you in advance.
    Greetings,
    kempiak

It was my mistake. Value of the substitution string is included in the translation file. I have changed it there and it works perfectly.
    Greetings,

  • Application Not listed In Force Quit Applications Window

I running an application that is not displaying in the Force Quit Applications window.
When Adobe Lightroom 3 is running it is not listed.
I have quit the application and relaunched it and it still is not appearing in the list of Applications that are running.
What may have happened? How can I remedy this issue?
    Thank you.

Why do you need to invoke the force quit? Are you experiencing hangups, freezes, or ?
When you have the Help section pop up window of an application open, the app itself stays "hidden" until you close the help window - you have to get used to closing that first.

  • Application 'not responding' cannot force quit

I previously posted this before upgrading to 10.4.4. Problem persisted. THen i doubled the RAM, thinking it was a ram problem. Still no solution.
Short Story: in various applications, at various times, the program stops responding and Force Quit does not work. Usually this occurs when using the SAVE AS, or Export As, or Import function. Ultimately, i have to do a hard restart.
Long Story. I have an eMac G4 that was running 10.3.8. it was networked at home via airport with an eMac, TiPB and Cube. All was good. Then we moved. I reestablished my home network, but this time will all 'puters hooked up via ethernet. My eMac then started experiencing bad behavior. For example, iDVD would hang when burning a DVD. Or, MS Word would hang when printing to PDF. Or when i tried using save as. Force Quit would appear to work, forcing the window to close. but the dock would still show the program open. when i return to Force Quit, the offending program would be there in red (not responding). Other open programs would then do same thing. only recourse would be to do a hard restart.
i bought 10.4.3 (family pack) and upgraded all 'puters. Same problem.
i ran disk utilities to both repair permissions and repair disks. Same problem.
i bought disk warrior and ran it several times. same problem.
i tried some shareware, YASU 1.3.5. Same problem.
i have trashed preferences for all programs. Same problem.
    i do not have iDisk.
My energy saver is set to default.
i have NOT bought Tech Tool Pro. Should I?
i have not run any virus software detection/protection. Should I?
the problem is not occurring on the networked 'puters (Cube, emac and TiPB).
any help out there in Macland would be most appreciated.

    Hi, iciclesteve.
Troubleshooting freezes and hangs — which appears to be the root issue — is not unlike troubleshooting kernel panics: the steps are virtually the same. As a troubleshooting roadmap, use the steps in my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
It's also possible the eMac may have been damaged in the move, or something has become unseated (added RAM, AirPort card, etc.) or loose as a result of shipping. Check these things if installed.
Running the Apple Hardware Test that came with the eMac — the first step in my FAQ above — is a good step, but my FAQ should help you sort this out further if the Apple Hardware Test — or the subsequent suggestions on RAM testing — doesn't find a cause.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto is stuck on import and it wont even let me force quit

Quite some time ago, at least a few months, I was importing only a couple photos from my iPhone onto my Macbook. It was taking a long time to complete so I just decided to quit the whole thing entirely. When I tried to close iPhoto it wouldn't let me and a message popped up saying "Please wait for the import to complete." I then tried to force quit, and the same message popped up. Many months have passed and the same message pops up when I try to close iPhoto, and all I can do on iPhoto now is look at the pictures I have on there. I really want to fix this problem because my phone is clogging up with photos and I would like to import them, but I can't. If someone could help, that'd be great. Thanks!

Save and close everything you can and then use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to quit the loginwindow process.

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.
