I am unable to get beyond the "sync with iTunes" splash page after connecting my iPhone; every tab is grey. What gives?

Is the computer the one the device normally syncs with?
If not, sync with the computer it normally syncs with.
If it is, place the device in DFU mode (google it) and restore.

third attempt at asking, the problem is getting worse, tunes are disappearing from the phone.

Do you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer? Have you called Apple Technical Support (if you're in the US call: 1-800-MY-APPLE). Your phone came with 90 days of technical support. Use it.

I have tried to recover my iPhone 3gs in every possible way.
Last resort seemd to be via DFU mode. The whole process looks good and runs withou any errors.
After recovery is done the iPhone appears in iTunes again, but the phone is not getting beyond the apple.
When I then try to restore the phone from backup or even try to set it up as a new phone, I get "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "XXX" because an error occurred.
When I try to switch it off using the wake+home button, I never se the slider again that would enable me to turn the iPhone off.
Any other methods. I don't care about lost data etc. since it can all get recovered from Address Book and iCal etc.
I just need to get to a point where I can access the phone again.

I am having the exact issue as yours, but, I fixed this issue myself and I would like to help many of those suffering from this issue to not be treated by Apple -- when I woke up in the morning I found my iPhone 4 was in "Upgrade to iOS6" mode on the moring that I planed to travel -- my alarm is still alarming me to wake up but the phone could not be used anymore, so fortunately I have backup phone to switch the sim-card to. When I am back home I went to a local "Short Hills" apple store Genius Bar and the staff told me that it could not be fixed, the only way to resolve this was to pay $150 for "Replacement" for a refurbished iPhone - I didn't believe him! My home PC/iTunes can detecte my phone, but the Genius Bar staff said it can't be deteted. I tried many different ways and finally I came up the followings which fixed by iPHone: 1) if you need to backup your stuff within the iPHone, you can use iTools from your PC; 2) Install the latest iTunes; 3) Try to recovery your iphone with iTunes several times and to see if it could be fortunately restored, Pay attention to the error messages, I got (-1) and (3194) which are ok, if they all are not working, then perform the last: 4) download the latest firmware for your version of your phone, such as iphone 4,5, GSM, CDMA, etc and save it into your PC; 5) perform a recovery mode from iTunes, but this time, you are pressing down the "Shift" key while you are clicking the "Recovery iPhone" from your iTunes, it will pop up a window to ask you to upload the firmware, you then select that downloaded firmware and it should fixed you problem and your iPhone will be just like brand new from Apple manufacture! Good luck! -- I have several negative experience with Genius Bar -- they are using refurbished phone with much older screen life LCD to replace my warrenty new phone -- this is apple the policy which are being complaied worldwide!!!! Ipod touch won't sync with itunes, only iphoto after snow leopard update upgrade

Have just put snow leopard onto my mac book 4.1. Can't get my ipod touch 5.1.1 to sync with itunes. It syncs with iphoto every time, but no device comes up in itunes or in finder. I have the latest software updates on both mac & touch. Any ideas?

Are you using the original cable that came with Nano and not your iPhone's cable? Have you worked through the troubleshooting in this Apple support document?

TS1286 what can I do if I cannot sync with ITUNES as USB is not recognised, iphone is not charging and apple icon displays and then dissapears - loads and then dissapears....?

I started having issues charging my Iphone and found that if it was switched off and on mains power it would charge.
It does not allow syncing with Itunes and or usb conncection.
I have a lot of photos on my phone that I have not been able to save (USB issue) and I am worried about retrieving these.
If my phone is connected to mains power - the apple icon comes on - then it goes off - then a few seconds later the icon comes up again and then off again?

Apple support asked me to reset my settings to fix my iMessage issue, now the issue is that I can't get past the sync to iTunes message on my phone. My phone is stuck in reset and I can't even use it!

Everytime I restart, force quit mail, restart in safe mode, and regular mode, when I reopen the Mail application, it goes right to the Upgrade Mail database screen and goes right back to the same spot it has been since I downloaded Mountain Lion and initislly opened the Mail app. It only goes to the Upgrade option, or can quit and Upgrade later. It is stuck in the middle of the Upgrade of my mail database...this blows!!!

Cannot get iPod to sync with iTunes using Windows 8 Laptop!

I have been trying to get my iPod classic to sync up with iTunes using my Windows 8 Laptop all night! I tried restoring the iPod, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes, disconnecting my iPod to restart my laptop then plugging back in. I also ran iTunes Diagnostics and it says my iPod isn't connected yet it shows on the sidebar. I also have automatic sync set up. When I hit sync, it initializes then stops. What am I doing wrong? Is there some trick I am missing. Also, my iPod won't charge unless it is syncing. What's up with that?

For the charging issue, some newer computers with USB 3.0 ports (especially laptops) seem to have a "feature" that saves energy by turning off full power to the port when the connected storage device is no longer mounted by the system. An iPod is a storage device. When iTunes syncs the iPod, iTunes mounts the iPod's dlsk. So it gets full power on the port, and the battery charges. When iTunes is done syncing, iTunes automatically unmounts the iPod's disk. The system shuts off full power to the port, and the battery no longer charges.
To work around this problem, go to the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes. There is a setting their for Enable disk use. Check that box and Apply. This setting keeps the iPod's disk mounted continuously, when the iPod is connected. Therefore, the port should continue to receive full power, and the battery charges. That's fine for now, but later on, you can go into the computer's Control Panel preferences to see if there is a setting that disables this "energy saver" feature, and keeps the USB ports at full power all the time, whether the storage device is mounted or not. If that is possible, you can turn OFF Enable disk use for the iPod.
NOTE: WIth disk use enabled, you need to eject the iPod in iTunes before disconnecting it safely from USB. The Eject button is next to the iPod's name in iTunes (to the right).
Now, for your main question about setting up automatic syncing... First, if the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar. When connected, the iPod appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES.
Select the iPod in the sidebar. To the right, its Summary screen is shown. Toward the top, there is a bar of buttons starting with Summary. Click on Music there, next to Summary. This Music screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs to the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music. This setting enables automatic syncing. If you want your entire iTunes music library on your iPod (and it fits), choose the option to sync Entire music library. Then click Apply. Going forward, any change you make to your iTunes music library syncs to the iPod automatically (at the next opportunity).

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- New cable and different USB port
- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause
