I am also unable to open https sites.

Do other about: pages work properly?

When I open firefox and go to my home page I get The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded. This also happens when I access other pages. I click ok and then it opens up but I'm ready to go back to IE

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

It's not that I'm typing anything in wrong, it's when I first open Firefox or a new tab. Instead of displaying the firefox page showing my recently viewed websites it's just an invalid URL. Why would I be blocked from this page?

up graded Firefox directly from older version to latest version and problem cropped up. Latest version on my laptop which is out of service and in shop works fine and on my net book works fine. Should I have done it in steps?

What other details are needed?

It may be that your hard drive is either failing again or that the hard drive bay SATA cable may need replacing. And if you're getting a "Service Battery" anyway it's probably best to take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and get a free diagnosis and estimate for repair. I would specifically ask that the SATA cable be tested so that you can tick that off the list of culprits.

This was advertised as a new security feature in the nightly build . Is this true has this security been added to Firefox 5.0 or only certain Firefox builds ?

Yes, that about:permissions page has recently been added to the Nightly builds (7.0a1), but the Aurora builds (6.0a2) have it as well. I don't think that Firefox 5 will get it.

This usually happens whenever I right click for a new tab or click a link. The unwanted tab always has the URL http://xn--3!1 -fua0do447bmv6g/#%C5%93%C3%8E%06%E2%80%99Ucr%C2%B7%C3%80 and I am constantly having to close these tabs.

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs. 
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. 
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

Actually the OP is running Firefox 3.6.8, but has a user agent that is corrupted by an extension (NET_mmhpset)
You can check the '''general.useragent''' prefs on the about:config page. 
You can open the '''about:config''' page via the location bar, just like you open a website. 
Filter: general.useragent 
If '''general.useragent''' prefs are bold (user set) then you can right-click that pref and choose Reset.
