Hello viratfromva,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your flash drive.  I found an article with steps you can take when an external device is not being recognized.
I recommend following the steps in the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the following article:

  • How can I open my flash drive with my MacBook Pro? I can't find it on FINDER!

My USB port can't open it!

Do you have your Finder preferences set to show all devices:
If so, and the USB flash drive is not showing up in the Finder, can you see it in Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities)?

  • Why won't pdf files open from flash drive?

Some files I have on a flash drive will not open. Some error messages say file is   damaged and cannot be repaired   or  cannot read (109)  or internal error.

Damn. What about files that say "internal error"? Those files I have can open up, but some of the pictures and pages and text is missing on those files.

  • How do you open a flash drive?

After attacheing a flash drive to the usb port I cannot find it. How do I access it?

Open Preferences in the Finder's Finder menu and be sure you have the second box checked:
Now prep the flash drive if it's new and never been used:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
It should now mount on your Desktop and be ready to use.

  • How do I open my flash drive I've loaded as a 'disk'- shows up, but no open

I can't get my flash drive to open through the USB port on my Extreme. It is set up and recognized by Extreme, but how do I access the files. Maybe I don't have it set up correctly.

Thank you for replying. Malcolm (above) managed to provide the exact solution I was looking for at the same time as you were typing your reply, judging from the time.
I'm accessing the QS from my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5), using a wired/wireless connection - the QS is wired, the MBPro wireless. At the moment they are about twelve inches apart, and I do have a keyboard to plug into the QS, but I'm hoping to set it up as a headless unit to take time lapse photos (using an iSight) and a clever script available here: http://gawker.sourceforge.net/Gawker.html
Once set up, I hope to access the QS remotely, as it will live in Birmingham, and I live in Bristol! So thinking as far ahead as possible, I wanted to set it up to be controlled as much as possible by me, even if my caretaker in Birmingham has to put a disc in the tray from time to time.
    Again, many thanks!
    kind regards

  • Unable to format 16gb Flash drive

Hi, I have a 16gb USB flash. I have been using it between a PC and a Mac to transfer files etc. Sometime ago I formatted it with OS Extended (journaled), I think with two partitions.
I can format it with a PC fat32 or Mac with OS Extended and obtain a full single partition of 16gb. No problem.
But when I program it with OS Extended (journaled) I keep getting the same result. I ask for a 1x Partion GUID 16gb OS X Extended (journaled), and it gives me 15.7gb, with 10.7gb available.
I understand the 15.7gb is 16gb less the EFI of 210mb. I know that the journal protects the system (me) somehow. But how do I ask the system nicely to give me back my space?

It's a flaw in how DU reports the free space when the device is freshly formatted. If you select the Desktop icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window you will see that the full 15.7 GBs is reported as free.

  • Flash drive not shown in File Explorer

I have plugged in my flash drive into three different usb drive ports (one at a time) and no luck on opening documents on it. Its icon shows on the bottom bar of the desktop, however it is unable to access.
I have restarted my computer to see if it will open in the file explorer folder, but it did not.
I do not know why my Toshiba laptop is unable to read my flash drive when I regularly use it on here for school. Are there any helpful hints to resolve this issue? I would appreciate the help.

    Strange! ?:|
What happens if you try to disconnect the external USB HDD and connect it again????
Do you see the little icon in the task bar that the USB device was connected???
    One hint:
    - Leave the USB HDD connected to the notebook
    - Shut down the notebook
    - Restart the notebook
    - Login into Vista
    - Check if the USB HDD was recognized again!
    Good luck

  • Odd -- Can't Move Around Files on Flash Drive

I've encountered a strange issue in the last couple days. I've searched the forum and couldn't find anything; pardon me if this has come up before.
I keep lots of files on a 2GB Geek Squad USB drive and I use it all the time. Recently, I've sometimes been unable to move files around within the drive itself. If I try to drag a file to a new folder, for example, the pointer gets that white "do not enter" sign underneath it. This doesn't happen all the time -- I was just able to move a file into a new folder that earlier today I could not move.
Even when this happens I can still seemingly copy files to and from the drive, just not move them around inside the drive itself.
I have read and write permissions on this drive. When the problem occurs I check and I still have the permissions (that is, it doesn't mysteriously switch itself on and off). It's formatted FAT16.
Can anyone take a guess as to why it lets me move files sometimes and other times it doesn't?
    Thanks!

Well, FAT16 does work up to 2GB, so it might be fine.
As to your question about the 256/512 entries, sorry, that's over my head!
When you open the Flash Drive on the Mac, how many items, (files & folders), are there visible at the top level? Some FAT16 implementations have a limit of 256 entries at the top level, (folders can have more in them), other FAT16 implementations have a 512 item limit.
I'd try Disk Utility on the Mac to Format/Erase one to FAT32 and see if that helps, or if it's not needed for use with PCs, Format it MacOS Extended.

  • Can I move only my iTunes movies, not my iTunes music, onto a flash drive? And, is there a program (apart from iTunes) that can play movies on MacBook Air?

I have a MacBook Air and I need to free up space...
    1) I have three series of a tv show on my itunes which are taking up loads of memory - see image - I want to move these movie files onto a Flash Drive. However I do not want to move my itunes Music onto the flash drive, only my Movies, and want to keep my music on my hard drive.
    Is this possible?
    2) I have managed to copy the movie files onto the flash drive, however when I tried to play one to check that they were loaded properly it didn't have a program that could run the file (they have copied over in a m4V format). Do the MacBook Air's not have a separate program other than itunes that can play movies? If so, is there a program I can get to solve this problem? I went onto the App Store to see if there was something I could download, but all the apps were for creating DVD's, not simply playing them.
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
Thank you so much for any answers posted.
    Best,
    Eloise15.

If you can play the movies in iTunes, you should be able to open the movie files using Quicktime, which should already be on your system.  If you have already transferred the files to your flash drive, open the flash drive in Finder, and hold control when you click on the movie file (or right click if you have the enabled) and select Open With Quicktime Player.  This should play the movie directly from the flash drive.
If you want to set all .m4v files to open with Quicktime by just double clicking on the file, you can follow the steps here: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2573/os_x_how_to_change_default_application_to_op en_file_type/
    3) If 1. & 2. questions are solvable, will it then be safe to delete the movies from my itunes?
You can move the TV shows to your flash drive by dragging them from the iTunes window to your flash drive in Finder or the flash drive icon on the desktop.  When you are sure everything is transferred over to your external device, you can delete the movie from iTunes.  I recommend playing the videos from the flash drive first before deleting them in iTunes.
To delete the videos from iTunes, you can highlight them and press the delete key on your keyboard.  In the next prompt, you would want to move it to the trash so that it is deleted from your internal hard drive.
    I hope that helps!

  • How do you save videos from iPhoto to a USB flash drive?, How do you save videos from iPhoto to a USB flash drive?

Hello! Could someone please help me? I am trying to save vidoes from iPhoto to a USB flash drive. After I export them, I open my flash drive to play them back and they are all zero seconds long in Quick Time Player. What am I doing wrong?

    How are you exporting?
Try to export using the "File" menu and select "Kind > Original".
Then drag the exported video file to your USB flash drive.
This user tip explains the export options:

  • Trouble exporting photos from iPhoto directly to a flash drive

    Hi,
When I exported 7 photos from my iPhoto library, all marked JPEG, directly to my 256MB Memorex flash drive (first time of usage), a strange thing happened. When I opened the flash drive on my computer, 5 photos showed up visually showing the image and two showed up as Generic JPEG icons.
The 5, (from info) were now marked Unix Executable File and the 2 Generics (from info) were marked JPEG.
In going to Target, then CVS Drugs and then Walgreens to have prints made, all their machines showed no images available.
All the images were taken on an HP photosmart 435, 3.1 MP digital camera.
Fortunately, all the images were still on the camera media and they then printed out very well when I returned to Target with the camera media
Many thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi captaindad,
I had a similar problem using a flash drive using iPhoto on a Mac and PS on a PC... when I first plugged in the Flash Drive in the PC, most images appeared but not all. I kept refreshing the window and all eventually appeared.
Now, I just drag and copy from iPhoto directly to my flash drive and all seems to be working smoother using this method rather than the export option, also doing it this way always ends up with an Image Thumbnail v. Generic JPEG icon... Rick

Unless you are 100% sure about what you are doing, don't try to open a flash drive as it the best way of destroying it.

  • Why am I not able to open external hard drive (FreeAgent GoFlex Desk) window??

I am simply trying to open a Finder window of the external hard drive itself so that I may copy over my Iphoto Library to it.  However, I am unable to do so!  There is no window to open.  When I connect my Free Agent GoFlex Desk external hard drive, Time Machine automatically begins and I see this green icon and the words, "Time Machine Backups" under Devices in Finder.  That all works fine and as far as I know the backups works just great.  But I am unable to open the external drive in a Finder window!  In my research, I've found the simple recommendation to:  "In the Finder, the external drive will show as an orange drive icone in the left pane."  But I don't see that, I only see the green icon as mentioned above.  What is going on?  Why can't I see this drive and open a window??  Thank you in advance!

You already have. Disregard the icon's color and follow the rest of the instructions. Note that Time Machine will eventually use all the free space on the location it's backing up to, so you should create a separate partition for other data.
