I am unable to see my Airport Extreme/Express on my MacBook via Airport Utility

I have two issues:
1. I am unable to see my Airport Extreme and my Airport Express via my MacBook Air's Airport Utility when I scan for Base Stations. However, the computer is happily connected to the wireless network of my Extreme (the Express is used to extend range)
2. I am unable to see a HDD that is connected via USB cable to the Airport Extreme.

The MacBook Air is actually connected to the wireless network provided by the two AirPorts!
Oddly, I see both AirPorts just fine when using my older PowerBook G4 with an older version of the AirPort Utility.
In addition, I cannot see the external HDD connected to the AirPort Extreme Base Station, and my wireless printer (HP D410a) suddenly stopped working via the MacBook Air. However, it works just fine from my iPhone, which is connected to the same AirPort Extreme/Express wireless network.
Recently, at the request of Sky Broadband, I switched to fixed IP addresses instead of DHCP, as I was having issues with the DHCP set-up.

Airport Extreme & Express w/ N working with Airport Base & Express w/ G

I have an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express with N. I also have an older Airport Base Station and Airport Express with G. I currently have them set up as a WDS.
My internet connection is 15 Mbps, but I'm only getting about 10 Mbps for wireless at the best of times. (I checked and when I plug directly into my router, I can get 15 Mbps).
From what I've been reading, it seems that having a WDS for 4 devices (with its 50% reduction per unit) is a bad idea, and might be cause for the slowdown.
Also, from what I've read, since my Airport Extreme does not have the dual network capability, my network is also forced to run at G speeds.
I need the two G airports on my system because I need them as wireless routers to support a stereo/Xbox in one room, and a Blu-ray player in another.
Setting up a dual-band 2.4 and 5 Ghz network won't work since the old and new Base stations aren't near each other.
So, is the solution here to reset all (except Airport Extreme Base) to "extending wireless network"? Will this give me N thought my home (or, at least, the range of the main router) but also allow the G units that serve as wireless routers for those items that still need them?
If this isn't the answer, what should I do?

You can't do that since your 802.11g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and AirPort Express (AX) do not support this feature.
If this isn't the answer, what should I do?
Connect them all via Ethernet. Another is to replace your 802.11g AEBS and AX.

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

Airport Extreme Base Station as Extender to Airport Extreme Time Machine

I have tried this a few times, but to no avail: Tonight I purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station (AE) to set up as an extender to my Airport Extreme Time Capsule (AETC). The Airport Utility finds the router and goes through set-up seemingly fine, with green lights on both. Then shortly after (within a minute) the AE reboots on it's own, followed by the AETC rebooting (again, on it's own) and this occurs repeatedly. I reset the AE completely and run through the set-up and the same thing occurs. I've also done soft resets to the AETC. Long and short of it - the restarting discontinues once I unplug the power cord from the AE. Then the AETC resumes as it has - providing fine wifi and speed. It appears the AE rebooting on its own makes the AETC reboot. Any ideas? Thanks!

howto - extending airport 802.11n networks
Pre-Requistites
1) Ensure all have most recent firmware - 7.7.3 for AC devices, 7.6.4 for 802.11n devices
2) Have most recent Airport Utility (OS X 10.7 thru 10.9, use 6.3.2, IOS6/7 use 1.3.3)
3) Only have the Primary Airport/TimeCapsule powered on for now
Set up the Primary/Anchor Airport Base Station
1) Do this over ethernet - ensure that the Modem and TimeCapsule/Airport is connected on the WAN port
2) You'll be prompted by Airport Utility to name the Network and the Base Station
Network is the SSID of the Wireless LAN
BaseStation is the name of the Airport/TimeCapsule
3) You'll be prompted for a password - this will be for both the WLAN and the Base Station on initial setup
Note here - there are at least three passwords to worry about post setup
a) BaseStation Management - in this how-to, this will be carried thru to the extended basestations
b) WLAN Access
c) Disk Access for TimeCapsule and AirDisk
They can be same or unique, up to you...
Configure the Airport/TimeCapsule for WiFi/Network
4) Select the named BS in Airport Utility - click the 'edit' button
5) Review 'Base Station' Tab
5a) BaseStation Name
5b) BaseStation Password - you can change this now if desired, this does not affect WLAN password
6) Review Internet Tab
6a) set as appropriate for your network - e.g DHCP or other depending on needs
6aa) focus here is getting the primary BS set up first
6b) Click Internet Options - this is IPV6 setup - for now...
6ba) Set to Link-Local Only, click save, you can go back and change this later if needed
7) Go to Wireless Tab
7a) Set Network Mode to "Create a wireless network"
7b) Check Wireless Network Name
7c) Wireless Security - recommend WPA2 Personal - this is important as you'll need this later
7d) Wireless Password - the password entered in step 5b above is what is used here, feel free to modify or not - if so, note this
7e) disregard Enable Guest Network for now
7f) Click Wireless Options
7g) ensure 5Ghz network name is unselected
7h) Country as appropriate - since I'm in California, I choose United States
7i) Leave 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Channels as "Automatic" for now, click save if needed
8) Click Network Tab
8a) if this is your primary router - use DHCP and NAT
8b) Click Network Options
8c) DHCP Lease - I use 12 hours
8d) IPv4 DHCP Range - every here is a bit different, but my recommendation for most folks
192.168.1.100 to 150
Use what works for you, keeping in mind that the AP Extreme, TimeCapsule, and 2012 Airport Express can handle 50 clients, max
8e) Ensure that Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol is selected
8f) can worry about Enable default host at: [] later, this is the DMZ'ed host
8g) can choose to enable IGMP Snooping or not - doesn't affect the primary setup
8h) click save
TimeCapsule Only - for Airport Extreme, worry about AirDisk later
This is TimeMachine support, along with FileShares
9) Select Disks - you should see a partitiion named "Data"
9a) ensure that Enable file sharing is selected
9b) ensure that Share disks over WAN is unchecked for now
9c) Secure Shared Disks:
Choices here -
device password - noted in step 5b above
disk password - this will be for all LAN clients that can see the Data Partitiion
accounts - you can set up separate users and passwords - this is beyond scope of this how-to
Recommendation if using as TimeMachine only, use a disk password - note this as you'll need it for timemachine on the clients
Save Settings to the Airport/TimeCapsule
10) Click the "update' button
The Airport/TimeCapsule will restart
Everything now should show green and shiny - open a web browser and attempt to go to Apple/Google/Yahoo, to ensure that you've got network connectivity
Reviewing things in the Airport 6.3 utility, you should see your base station and the Internet - both with green status
Once done here, let's extend the Wireless Network
Note - again, it helps to be connected to the primary base station on ethernet, wireless makes things, erm, challenging
11) with another decive - Mac/iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch or PC, ensure that Wireless LAN is working on the primary AP/Basestation
Once this is done, then proceed to the next step
Enable the "Extended" Airport - can be another TimeCapsule, Airport Express or Airport Extreme
For purposes of this discussion - assume all ore 802.11n capable at a minimum, so this applies towards more recent gear
a) Airport Extreme AC (2013)
b) Airport TimeCapsule AC (2013)
c) Airport Express 2012 Dual-Band (Looks like AppleTV)
d) Airport Extreme 802.11n 5th Gen, TimeCapsule 4th Gen
e) Airport Express 802.11n - similar to the 802.11g variant, looks like a MacBook Pro power adapter
Assumptions here is that the extended airport is factory defaults - see link below for more info:

Once this is done, plug in the Airport that is intended for extending the wireless network
after about a minute or so, you should see a blinking orange light, this is normal...
In Airport Utility, you should see in the upper left hand, "Other Wi-Fi Devices (1)" - click this, if you don't see this, exit and restart Airport Utility
12) clicking on the button, you should see an entry menu as "Airport Extreme xxxxxx", select this
13) Once selected, you'll see "This Airport Extreme/Express/TimeCapsule will be set up to extend "Primary Base Station"
14) Enter the name for this base station - it should be unique from the name of the Primary noted in step 5a
15) Click "next"
16) Should see "setting up this base station to wirelessly extend..."
you'll see some progress messages.. this is the two basestations handshaking....
If successful, you'll see the BaseStation named in step 14 as "is now wireless extending "base station named in (step 5a)"
STOP - the Airport is now extended, repeat steps 11 thru 16 for each addtional Airport
For advanced features - such as port forwarding, DMZ, IPv6 Tunnels, Back to my Mac, etc - perform this only on the Primary Base station outlined in steps 1 thru 8h

Airport Extreme & Express "extended" but signal is still weak

I have a brand new Airport Extreme 802.11n and an old Airport Express 802.11g
Airport Extreme is set to "extend wireless network"
Airport Express is set to "join a wireless network" - green light is on and says its connected to the network.
Airport Extreme is downstairs at home, Airport Express is upstairs. Also have Apple TV upstairs.
Apple TV is only getting a two bar signal at the moment from Airport Extreme (and takes forever to transfer files from main computer downstairs). Want to extend network by plugging in Airport Express upstairs and getting stronger signal for Apple TV.
Yet when I plug in Airport Express upstairs - right next to Apple TV - and the green light is on, etc. Apple TV still is only getting two-bar signal - so it appears it's not picking up "extended network" via Express.
Isn't this how an extended network is supposed to work or do I have it all wrong?

Joining a network using the older "b/g" model will not extend the network.
In the case you describe, your Apple TV is connected to the main base station and so is your Airport Express. The Apple TV cannot connect to the Airport Express.
Also, if you do set up the WDS, you would want to put the Airport Express about half way between your main base station and the Apple TV...
If you want to stay with your old Airport Express, you will have to set up a "WDS" network on both devices. However, the speed of your network will be cut down to 54mbps instead of 130 on 2.4GHz band or 300 on the 5GHz band.
I replaced my older Airport Express units with the newer "n" models.

Let me see if I can help you with the basic WDS configuration steps:
Note: To help facilitate the setup, temporarily connect the AXn directly to the AEBS LAN port using an Ethernet cable. Once the setup is complete, you can move the AXn to the desired location. For all configuration steps you will be using the AirPort Utility. Before starting, be sure to jot down the AppleIDs for both base stations.
802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) Configuration
AirPort Utility > Select the AEBS > Manual Setup > Wireless tab
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network
Manual Setup > WDS tab
WDS Mode: WDS main
Allow wireless clients (checked)
WDS Remotes: <enter the AppleID for the AXn here>
Click on Update and allow the base station to restart.
802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) Configuration
AirPort Utility > Select the AXn > Manual Setup > Wireless tab
Wireless Mode: Participate in a WDS network (Note: You may have to hold down the Option (Mac) or Control (PC) key to see this option in the list.)

WDS Mode: WDS remote
Allow wireless clients (checked)

My Airport Extreme Station (4th Generation) is all of a sudden not recogized by the Airport Utility Software. I rebooted the Airport Extreme device a few times, disconnected it completely, and did it set it back to the factory default setting. No recognition. I tried configurating it with all my devices; IPhone 4S, IPad, MacBookPro and new iMac. Always the same message, even though I have internet access through the Airport default Wifi-ID. So the the Airport device works properly. Just no access for configuration, Does anyone has an advice to get back into the Airport Set-up through the Airport Utility program? Thank you.

Without an airport extreme card, there won't be any Wifi signals going to and from the router (unless you have your machine hooked up via ethernet cable, in which case you don't need an airport card because the signal is transmitted through the cable). Most Macs have a card installed - which Mac do you have?

Issues with Airport Extreme/Express/PS3 network

I have searched and searched and cannot find the answer to my problem. In my house I have an Airport Extreme, a Linksys switch, and an Airport Express all creating my wireless/ethernet network in the house. Since day one, my PS3 joined our network and I have been able to get online, no problems. Recently though I have decided to attempt to get the horribly difficult NAT type 2 with no success.
Right not I have the Extreme acting as the WDS main and the Express (which delivers perfect connection to the PS3) acting as a WDS remote in Bridge mode. The Extreme is sharing a public IP and I have a DHCP reservation for my PS3 (using the default 10.0.1.253 IP) along with all the PS3 necessary ports forwarded. I have also set up the Extreme to set my PS3 as the default NAT host.
My problem is that I get a "Conflicting DHCP Range" error. I also get a lot of warning messages every now and then saying "10.0.1.x is already in use by *MAC address* 10.0.1.1". I still can get on the internet with my computers and PS3 but I have noticed that signing onto PS network works very rarely.
I absolutely cannot make sense of this. I also don't have my NAT 2 so can anyone help me.

Is the PS3 connected to the express over WiFi or plugged into the ethernet port on the express or both?
You should not need forward ports and set the default NAT host. Just setting the default NAT host will forward all traffic that is not sent to another host to the PS3. I would recommend forwarding ports instead of using default host for security reasons.
You could also try setting static IP info in the PS3.

Airport Extreme doesn't show up in Airport Utility.

Just got a new Mac Mini and a new Airport Extreme.
When I tried to set up Airport Extreme today, ran into some problems.
1) Light is flashing amber
2) Airport Extreme does not show up in Airport Utility
3) I have DSL and ethernet cable is plugged into WAN port on Airport Extreme.
4) Both units are sitting side by side and yet there's no connection detected.
5) Airport Utility keeps telling me to rescan as it cannot detect any wireless devices.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If you are trying to connect using wireless, make sure that you are connected to the default wireless network that the AirPort Extreme provides for setup purposes. The network that you are looking for will have a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. There is no security, so a password is not required. It usually also helps to restart both the computer and the AirPort Extreme.
You can also temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme. Restart both the computer and the AirPort Extreme when you do this.

Airport Extreme & Express Network

I have the Airport Extreme as my base with three Airport expresses acting as extenders, one downstairs and two daisy chaining to an outdoor area about fifty feet away. We have an old house with heavy plaster and stucco walls that just kills signals. In setting up Airtunes, can i use one of the extenders or do i need another express to be the airtunes carrier? Am i limited on how many expresses are on the system. New to the apple world, but loving how easy things seem to work.

Extend Network with Airport Extreme & Express

I am trying to extend the range of a wireless network from one house to another about 80 yards away. I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (ABES) and an Airport Express (AX) which is supposed to accomplish this. I found some instructions in the forums that walked me through configuring WDS. That was easy enough, however, when the AX restarts it doesn't come back up in the Airport Utility. It will come up if I do a hard reset on the AX. The ABES continues to show a WDS error and displays a flashing amber light.
What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this issue?

Karen,,, sorry for the interruption. I have the same issue..... AP Extreme Flying Saucer, AP Express "b", and a new AP Express "n" and would like to stop all the drop outs with my music. So, I'll ask Bob for some help.... I think I already know the answer.....
Bob,,,,, Here is my schematic layout.... Everything is "as the crow flies" and in the same height placement. iMac in bedroom, 1st Stereo in Living room approx 25 feet away, 2nd Stereo in a detach Shop approx 85 feet from the iMac. There is a concrete block wall between the computer and the first stereo and the same block wall along with two big glass windows between the computer and the shop stereo. Again all are in a straight line from the computer.
The new AP Express "n" is in the shop which is the greatest distance. If the wind is blowing hard I have lots of drop outs in both stereo's..... And during other nice weather times everything works excellent.
How can I extend the wireless signal??? I'll buy all "n" stuff if you think it'll do the trick....? I can't raise the Dr. Bott antenna due to cord length.... Oh,, my internet modem is plugged into the iMac not the AP Extreme...
Any suggestions....?
