I am unable to switchoff the ipod, unable to goto previous menu

Dear Sir,
I am having a iPOD NANO of 8GB. Problem right from the begging. once if I select any category (be songs or pics) from there onwards you can't go to another category. for example if u are listening songs u can't go back to pics.
And most difficult problem is that I am unable to switchoff the ipod.
Kinldy help me, I am getting frustrated being a new one.
regards,
srikar

Hi. Stupid question: Did you read the manual?
You can get back to a former menu by pressing "menu".
You can switch off iPod by pressing "pause/play" for 2 seconds.
Be sure that "hold" switch isn't in use.
Hope that will help.

  • Music takes up space on the iPod, but can't be found

I bought a new 60GB iPod on Saturday. On Sunday I got it working fine with my PC. I was listening to it in bed.
On Monday morning, the iPod looked normal, but I could noot find any songs on it.
I tried to resync, and got a range of error messages.
I have followed the advice here and on the Apple site, so I now have reinstalled iPod and iTunes. But I still have one problem left.
When I connect to iTunes, the iPod is automatically updated. I then get the message OK to disconnect and the iPod screen shows its home menu. But when I search through the iPod, nothing is there. iTunes shows a list of items on the iPod, in grey text. Both iTunes and iPod are repoprting 53.3GB free, but the iPod is also showing 0 ssongs, 0 videos and 0 photos.
When I view the iPod in Explorer, the music folders appear. I can even play the files from those folders in iTunes. It might give an error message, but it still works.
I've tried switching the iPod from disk mode, but that doesn't seem to work. In fact, now I am looking at the iPod in iTunes, it does not appear in Windows Explorer, so that seems a safe bet that it is not in disk mode.
I then ejected the iPod from iTunes. When I reconnected the iPod, it appeared as a disk in Explorer. However, iTunes now shows the error "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "x". Use the iPod Updater to restore the iPod to factory settings." and it disconnects from Explorer as well.
I closed iTunes, reconnected the iPod and it now appears in Explorer, iTunes opens and gives the chkdsk and the iPod Updater error messages.
What should I try now? (I haven't tried formatting or chkdsk.)

I spend almost two hours on the phone to AppleCare people this morning. It was a very strange problem indeed and isn't resolved for sure just yet. The iPod was just refusing to get out of Disk Mode, which is quite strange.
Here's some extra steps that might help anyone else.
    1. I was able to use the Mac version of the iPod Updater and iTunes worked fine on my old iMac. The iPod snapped out of Disk Mode after the Update and kept working after iTunes. Like normal. So that suggests that that iPod itself was not completely broken.
HINT: Have a Mac lying around when you have trouble with your Windows format iPod.
    2. You can format a FAT32 device with OSX Tiger, even over the stupid 32GB limit that Windows XP and 2000 imposes. (FAT32 is good for 4TB, according to the spec.)
    Open Disk Utility.
Close iTunes. (You may have to use Activity Monitor to kill the iTunes process.)
Select "55.9GB Apple iPod Media" or similar. Select Erase and choose the Volume Format "MS-DOS File System".
    3. To really clean the iPod, format with OSX as above, but choose the Erase Free Space... option to write zeros to the disk. A normal format (twice) didn't really help me, so I'm trying something more drastic that AppleCare suggested.
    4. (Untested by me) Or use Windows XP to format the iPod as NTFS. Then use iPod Updater to restore, which will reformat the iPod file system to FAT32, (I've got my doubts about that method. YMMV)
    5. Really uninstall Windows iTunes, iPod Updater and QuickTime. After a restart, run Windows Install Clean Up to remove any installer files for those three applications that might be hanging around. See Microsoft knowledge base 290301 for instructions and download of the Clean Up utility. (It didn't find any stary installer files on my PC.)
    6. Download and reinstall iTunes with QuickTime and iPod Updater. (I'd already done this once during the week, but I thought I might as well make sure, right?)
    Next Steps:
Once I've finished writing the zeros (only 10 hours to go!) I will eject from the iMac and try updating and syncing to iTunes in Windows.
Could I use the iMac as my media centre? Not really. It is old and slow and has a small HDD. I could network the iTunes folder onto my big PC...? The big downer is the lack of FireWire support for these new iPods, so I'm stuck with USB1.1 on the iMac. Too slow.

  • Computer not formatting the iPod (after trying many, many times

I purchased the 60GB iPod a few days ago and as I'm connecting the computer tells me that it needs to be formatted, but it does not do it.
I tried all that the troubleshooting suggest, reseting the iPod, changing USB ports, retarting the computer, uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and Updater 2005-11-17, but to no avail, it does not format it.
My computer has Windows XP Professional Version 2002 and Service Pack 2
What can I do, I'm going on a trip very soon and want to enjoy my music!!!

From your description, it sounds like you're just one step away...
Launch the iPod Updater utility from Start menu -> All Programs -> iPod ...
Connect the iPod, the utility should see it shortly and you can use the Restore button to reformat the iPod.

  • Solution for teachers (and others) to lock down the iPod

Hello all. I just have to share something I found yesterday. If you've seen other posts of mine, I am a teacher with a class set of iPod nanos. I have audiobooks on them so the students can listen to and read the book at the same time. My problem was that there are preinstalled games on the iPod nano that cannot be removed. After contacting my educational contact at Apple, she said they have sent it up the pipes, but as of yet there is no solution. Well I found one!
First off, it is not my solution. I attended FETC this year and went back to their website and found a partial solution. The person's name is Luis Perez. He has two websites: http://etc.usf.edu/te_mac/ for mac and http://etc.usf.edu/te_win/ for windows. So here is how you do it.
Create a text file in a text editor that has the following:
    <meta name="NotesOnly" content="true">
    save the file as preferences.txt
Create another text file with the following:
    Name of link goes here
    Here is my completed one:
    Click for Audiobooks
Save this under whatever filename you want. I chose Audiobooks.txt
In iTunes make sure you have a playlist named whatever you put in the file. (NOTE: it must be a playlist, it wouldn't link to just audiobooks)
Sync the iPod in disk mode. Open the iPod in Finder or explorer and copy both files into the NOTES folder. Eject the iPod. Now the only thing the iPod will do is go to the notes folder. (it is in a sense 'locked down') Your other file should be listed. When you open that file (audiobooks.txt) it will say the name of your link. When you click that it will start with the first song/book in that playlist. You cannot go to any other thing on the iPod. When you hit menu, it goes right back to the notes folder.
PLEASE NOTE: if you want to 'unlock' the iPod, just trash the preferences.txt file you put on there.
I know it is rather long, but it is a solution I have been looking for. I am hoping other teachers or people who need to secure the iPod for whatever reason are helped by this. Let me know if you have questions.

Bizarre, I can't figure out how to edit it. I can't figure out how to get it to show up right either! Anyway. 2 links showed up that aren't supposed to be there.
I can't figure out how to stop it from linking. <Edited by Moderator>

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Do a reset of everything on your ipod. Then reconnect it and it should work.

I'm unable to access content on my iPod Classic while it is connected to iTunes.
The iPod itself shows up and is set to manual management, but I am unable to view or play any of the content on it (music, movies, podcasts etc.).
I can click the tabs Music, Movies etc. but I can't see anywhere to access the files themselves, no music or movies are listed, I only have the option to 'Sync' with the iTunes, which I don't want to do as there is no content on the iTunes!!!
I just downloaded the iTunes program.
    Very confused, pleaseee help ...

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and itunes, it seems that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior..

After replacing the hard drive on my G4 Powerbook and reinstalling Tiger I am no longer able to synch between itunes and my ipod (Classic 160gb) it would seem that the software on the ipod is of later date than itunes and I am unable to update itunes to the state prior to the original harddrive's failure for Tiger OSX 10.4.11
Any ideas on the subject would be most helpful
    Thanks in advance
    Dingoh

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

  • My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable fix

My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable to figure out why. It did not used to do this. I can't figure out any pattern to the songs it does it on versus that it doesn't do it on. Some of the songs are purchased, some are imported, etc. We are running Windows 7.

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • TS1398 I just restored my ipod because the 'other' section was taking up about half of the space on my ipod and now I am unable to connect to the my wifi and I was able to before restoring the ipod.

My wifi isnt letting me connect to it and i have no idea why. It was working just fine before i restored my ipod

    If not this:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then
Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Does the iPod see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
    Did the iPod connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • I had to replace the hardrive on my laptop. I have over 2000 photos in an album on my iPod Touch but I am unable to get the pictures off the iPod and back onto my computer. Suggestions?

I am in need of assistance with syncing photos on my iPod onto my laptop. Had to replace the hardrive on the laptop and I'm unable to get the photos synced from the iPod.

    - If the photos were taken by or saved to the iPod just use the computer's camera/image capture software to get them from the iPod.
    - If the photos were synced to the iPod you need a third-party program such as PhoneView of TouchCopy.

  • With itunes 10.5 last version today 15 october, windows 7 64 bits, unable to recognize ipid touch in itunes (windows recognizes the ipod) help !!

windows 7 64 bits : it recognizes the ipod Touch
but itunes is unable to see the ipod
I've been following all the steps descripbed in apple.support and the problem remains
    iOS 5 and Itunes 10.5

I found the solution after a year of dysfonctionnement
My motherboard was P7P55D from ASUS
operating system  Windows 7 64 bits
I have upgraded the BIOS with the lastest BIOS from ASUS ant itworks : My PC recognizes all ipods and also my Tomtom GPS that was also not recognized.
So update your BIOS ... it is risky but it works (or ask a professional to update your BIOS)
and with Itunes 10.5 ou can also synchronize the ipods via WIfi : no USO required (once you've succeeded in connecting ipod to the pC one time)

I was gave an Apple iPod Touch that was disabled and I called the Apple store and they emailed me how to fix it but now when i plug it up to the PC it's saying that the iPod is unable to be recognized and I don't know what to do?

    Not sure if this helps:-
The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered  owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work.  Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple  Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them.  The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

i have forgotten my security question answers and my recovery emails aren't coming through. Apple won't or are unable to resolve so how do i now make purchases on the ipod touch?

Wont/Unable as in you were not able to verify information?
Basicly the only way Account Security is not able to reset your security questions is because
1 - You do not remember your password
2 - You were unable to verify any information which is required
If you do not remember your password - until your password is either remembered or reset - will not be able to reset questions via Support
If you know your password - then if you are unable to verify any information regarding your account your questions will not be reset.
I apologize - If the information above is not the case try calling back in.
