I am using an iphone 4s Emoticons don't seem to appear

I have been able to type in :-) and the emoticon would show. However, for some reason it doesn't now. I can select them from the keyboard but confused why its changed. can anyone help please.

I used it in text messages and imessages and it worked ok. Now for some reason it has stopped working and can only be selected from the emoticon keyboard.
It does work in other apps such as facebook no problem.
So I used to put :-) and it changed automatically to now it doesn't it stays as :-)

I still have to put my passcode in.

What that means is the activation lock does not operate if you did what you said you did. Bottom line, turn it back on. That will then require anyone trying to use the device to have yoru Apple ID and password.

Hi I'm new to iPhone and iTunes - I'm trying to sync some music from my PC to my iPhone. I've looked on the net and all the advice says: look at the sidebar and find your device. Easier said than done, The sidebar on my version of iTunes, downloaded today, has only musice related information. I am supposed to click on my device, there is nothing remotely like that on my sidebar, what do I do now?

On the sidebar, "Devices" will only appear when your iPhone is connected to the computer.

How do I ensure that an application is fully closed out?
IM+ is an example but I would like to know in general. IM plus somehow runs in the background but sometimes I want to disable it completely I"m not sure how. Same goes for facebook or safari even. My concern is that I thnk the phone slows down when too many things have been opened. Is there a way to fully force all applications closed short of rebooting?

3rd party apps do not run in the background on the iPhone. Apps like IM+ that 'seem' to run in the background do not - your chat account is kept active by the server (not the phone) and/or push notifications via Apple's push notification server are used to alert you that there is server-side activity for the app.
So, you would just need to exit the app, and if you want to turn off notifications, use Settings > Notifications.
Also, note that you can force-quit an app - press and hold the sleep/wake button until you see the power-off slider, then release the sleep/wake button and immediately press and hold the home button for ~6 seconds, until you're returned to the home screen.

IPhone problem - Apple don't seem to care

I have had my iPhone for about 6 months. Have been having intermittent audio drop outs during calls, took it into the Apple shop a couple of months ago.
They blew some compressed air through it and told me to try it again. It still is having problems, took it back today and they said they could not find the problem and as they are only a retail store they only have 15 minutes to look at the product before passing me over to someone else.
I was then given an address to go to (depot.info.apple.com) to book a courier to collect my iPhone. This address just redirects you back to the normal support page, which in turn tells you to go back to the Apple store. Its very difficult to find the address to write to Apple with. I'm stuck, with a bad iPhone, can anyone help?

OK thanks for the number, telephone support were quite good but confused about why they didn't swap the iPhone instore. He thinks they may have been out of stock in the store.
Anyhow he is sending a courier to come and pick it up for me.

I changed my Apple ID. I can log in on my computer with it, I get in. but my Iphone and iPad don't seem to know its been changed. Creating many problems. How do I sync that info?

I changed my apple ID, I can log in on my MAC so I know it works but my iphone 4S and my ipad mini dont know it has changed!!
Causing many issues.

You need to go to Settings > General > iCloud or Settings > General > iTunes Store and update your account information there. You need to do this on each device you have that account set up on.

Smart Groups using a combined negative condition don't seem to work

I have two manually created Groups. Let's call them 'All' and 'Some'. If I create a Smart Group so:
Contains cards which match all of the following conditions
Card is member of All
Card is not a member of Some
I would expect the result to give me all those cards in All that are not in Some.
It doesn't. It yields all the cards in All. In other words the negative condition "not a member of" is being ignored.
Anyone else found this?
Is there a workaround?

I have had similar problems. If you are certain you have the appropriate criteria checked, The match "any" or match "all" on the top level which ever is right, then the rating "is" the criteria you want and scroll down to make sure nothing else is limiting your search, all obvious I know, and then you have checked to make sure in the browser search field "Showing all" is displayed and it still doesn't work, then I simply do this. Delete the smart album or web gallery and create a new one with the criteria you want. It doesn't make sense to me, but it has worked many times when my Smart albums get stupid. I have a similar unanswered question here.

It foreces me to restrore mi iPhone and I don´t want

I have installed the last upgrade for mi iPhone, but now it tells me to conect the iPhone to iTunes and when I do this it forces me to restore it and I don´t want to do it. I can´t use mi iPhone if I don´t restore it, what can I do? If I restore it I am going to lose all my contacts, informations, photos... because I don´t have a security copy.

Your iPhone is in recovery mode, you must restore to use your iPhone.
Your data on iPhone is already gone if you do not have a backup.

Try to do a reset, if it doesn't work try remove recently added apps this may solve your problem ( like google app because it has happened with me)
Take a look at apps using your location service in privacy, it can cause battery draining.

You need to go to Manage your Apple ID, https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/, and sign in with your current Apple ID and password and do the following:
1.     Edit your current Apple ID and change it back to the ID which is displaying for your iCloud account. You do not need to verify it - this is only a temporary change
2.     Go into Settings>iCloud on your device and delete the iCloud account. Use your current password when your are prompted for a password
3.     Once the old iCloud account is deleted, go back into Manage your Apple ID and change your ID back to the current one
4.     Go back to Settings>iCloud and sign on with your current ID and password
That should take care of your issue!

Its possible the original owner had an unlocked phone. he was using with GCI. Or that GCI doesn't actually have locked phones. Seeing as they don't even have their own infrastructure but instead use AT&T's I doubt they'd have iPhones specifically locked to them and that would be the reason they do not offer unlocking (because there's nothing for them to unlock). And just to clarify, I'm not saying for a fact its not locked to them. It very well maybe be, but without knowing more about the phone and going by the fact GCI uses AT&T infrastrucure its possible its not locked. But here's no way to say for sure either way.
Trying a Sim card from AT&T or another carrier might just help the OP if its actually unlocked or locked to AT&T rather than GCI.

You have a password, so good move on your part. Whether you erase it or the thief does, they still get to use the iPhone as theirs. Which is more important (pick one), protecting your data or punishing the thief?
Ringing occurs at the carrier. Chances are you're going to voicemail after only two or three rings. If you have an iCloud backup also a good move. Re-read my question in the first paragraph.

Staying signed in at iCloud.com is not a problem for me. Try resetting your browser or emptying its cache.
