To update
your iPhone:
Be sure you have iTunes 10.7 (11 will be released soon)
Plug in your iPhone
Go to the iPhone summary screen
Hit "update"
If the update fails
Go on your search engine and type "iPhone 3GS firmware GSM" or "iPhone 3GS firmware CDMA" and download the latest firmware from there.
Place the downloaded firmware on your desktop or in your downloads page
Go back to the summary page
Hold Shift and click update
Find the firmware in your saved location
A question will pop up asking if you want to install the firmware

I am using iphone 3gs and have accidentally clicked "update" to software version 5. However, after I failed and all my data was lost. I manage to restore back to my previous situation. But all my apps has been gone. How can I get back all my aps? I know I can get it by itunes but there are a few problems as below:
1. I have jailed break my iphone and I never purchased any apps from itunes
2. I have some important infomation saved in one of the apps called "awesome notes". How can I get it back? Is it store inside my computer? if so, how can i restore?
3. I am using window 7

Stephen Hongalrite. I have made my mistake. I should not jail break my iphone. So if I purchase my apps again from itunes is that mean mean my data will be back?
I hope you guys can giv me some support here since I am Apple genuine buyer. I could be wrong last time and now I turn over a new leaf and learn a lesson.

You won't see this until you update to iOS 5. You'll have to update using iTunes by going to the Summary tab of your sync settings and clicking on Check for Update (you will probably be prompted that there is an update available when you connect your phone and open iTunes).

I'm having the same problem as maujmasti.
After upgrading my iphone 3gs to ios 6.1.6 my wifi connection stopped working. When the network requires a password it displays a message that the password is incorrect and when it's an open network it says that it wasn't able to connect.
I formated my iphone in attempt to fix the problem. It worked for a while but a few days later I could not connect anymore. The weird thing is that the wifi connection started to work again for another day or two but after that it stopped for good.
When I tap on the blue arrow beside the wifi name, all the spaces are blank (IP adress / subnet mask / router / DNS ...).
I've tried a lot of things that I read on the forum and nothing works.
I could try to format my phone again but the problem is that I can't do an iCloud backup, not via wifi neither via iTunes. -

Are you positive you have an iPhone 4? What does it say in Settings>General>About>Model?
4.2.1 is the last version of iOS that will run on the iPhone 3G. -

Sorry, iOS 4.2.1 is the end of the line for your phone. You cannot update your iOS any further.

As you have ios 4, you will hae to update as always.
Turn on computer.
Open itunes
Connect iphone
