I am using os x 10.4.11 on a 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo. I don't believe I can install lion on this system but was wondering what is the highest version I can use?

In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:

Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard. It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great. Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need. There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Today I added a new entry in my Address Book on Macbook and also edited an entry on my iPhone Contacts. I have tried syncing several times and neither is updating on the other device. Makes me wonder how many other entries are not synced. Any ideas?

Sorry, I did not make myself clear. I am asking for help with the problem of unsuccessful syncing. In the past (after I finished syncing) the Contacts on my iPhone were identical to the entries in Address Book on my Macbook. Yesterday I discovered some entries that did not succdessfully sync. Tried your suggestion various ways but it had no effect the download button was still greyed out and the install button would not activate will keep trying to find a solution. I dont want to boot from the external hard drive that has Lion on mainly because it is a usb HD and the connection to my wireless modem slows the connection rate and downloading would take about ten hours
