I am wondering what is the best way to merge a very large iphoto library (from my MBP) to my new iMac (which has a few hundred photos on it now), and then upgrade to Aperture?

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
I have a new iMac with a few hundred photos that I've uploaded since I bought it last December.
The iMac is where I want to keep everything stored as my main photo library, and manage it with a new Aperture installation.
Before I go and do this, and possibly muck it all up,
I would like to figure out the proper steps.
I am not too familiar with how to transfer files in the first place, so any help for a beginner would be much appreciated.
Starting from how to safely move the files from the MBP to the iMac, if anyone could walk me through this process.
I've been searching around but I have a specific goal (with getting everything into Aperture) so I don't want to get crossed up.
Thanks for your help!!

To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture
and Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries
Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:
See OS X Lion: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".
Post back, if you need more detailed instructions.
Good Luck.

What is the best way to connect a G4 running 9.2.2 or 10 to an new imac running lion?

It should be possible to network them easily.
Ethernet will be the most straightforward. There is no question that you can plug both Macs into a normal network and they can share files if you turn on File Sharing.
The iMac has a Gigabit Ethernet port, and if the G4 also has Gigabit Ethernet, that will be a very fast connection through a gigabit-capable Ethernet cable or router. Otherwise both can use the slower Ethernet speeds with no problem.
You can also network the two machines via a FireWire 800 or FireWire 400 cable if necessary, and use File Sharing that way too. Finally, you can put one Mac into FireWire Target Disk Mode, which turns it into a hard disk that the other Mac can see, but this is the least flexible since one machine goes out of service, and it's probably no faster than Gigabit Ethernet.

This is a common mistake and I highly advise against it.
1: TimeMachine saves states of changes and thus requires more room on the TM drive than the boot drive it's backing up.
2: Something happens to the TM drive, loss, theft, dropped, power surge, etc., you lose both backups.
3: The storage drive might become a portable need, with it being on the TM drive, now your increasing the risk to the TM backup that something could happen to it along with the storage drive, due to increased movement.

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.

I'm buying a new Macbook Pro this week and am wondering what is the best way to copy over the software I have from my existing Macbook Pro to the new one? eg. Photoshop and Office etc. I no longer have the CDs.

Ya know what I'm on a brand new MBP just about 24 hours old and you know whats been working amazingly for me. I have a 27inch iMac as well and i've just connected it to my network and been dragging files and apps across the network onto my new MBP. Its really working fast and its flawless. You could always do that option, Just go into sharing options and turn them on for both Macs. Then just click and drag. Of course they have to both be on the same network for this to be possible.
    Look at my network.
Shared is what your looking at.  I click on there see all my computers files and then drag the ones i want form its folder to my MBP folders.  Hope that helps if your looking for a very simple way on a wireless network.

What is the best way to merge a file content into log file.
In worst case, I will read the file line by line as string, then use
    logger.info(lineString)to output to log file.
However, is there better way to do this?
The eventual log file will be something like:
    log message 1
    log message 2
    content from file line 1
    content from file line 2
    content from file line 3
    log message 3
    log message 4Thanks

I would like to see better performance. read line by line and log each line as string can be slow. Did you measure this and determine that it is actually a problem for your application? Or are you guessing?
Regardless of what you do you are still going to need to read the file.

2.The only better way I can think of is not having to do it, but I assume you have a very good reason to want to do this.
Yes, I have to do it beacuse the requirement is to have that file content be part of logging.
Any idea? How is it supposed to be part of it? For example which of the following is better?
            File AAA - contents
                       First Line
                       Second Line XXX
            Log 1
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: First Line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Second Line XXX
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following line
            Log 2
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random preceding line
                    2009-03-27 DEBUG: ----- File: AAA -------------
                    First Line
                    Second Line XXX
2009-03-27 DEBUG: Random following lineBoth of the above have some advantages and disadvantages.
The first in a mult-threaded app can end up with intermittent log entries in between lines, so having log lines with thread ids becomes important.
The first can be created by reading one line at a time and posting one at a time.
The second can be created by reading the entire file as a single string and then posting using a single log statement.

What is the best way to manage tasks.  I have moved from a pc with outlook and have lost 'tasks' in that programme.  Do I have to rely on ical or can I download an app to manage business tasks?

iCal does have reminders but its implementation of tasks is pretty wimpy. There are a number of programs that are better geared to the job. I was a level 4 procrastinator until I discovered Getting Things Done and for me Things is perfect. It lets me handle projects which are dependent upon multiple tasks in a no-nonsense easy fashion. Much less expensive and really not much more than a list maker is Wunderlist. Thankfully there's a ton of shareware offerings - check out MacUpdate.com and see what works for you.

  • What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

What is the best method to import my iPhoto library from my macbook to my new iMac [27"]?

You can copy your iPhoto Library to an external hard disk, USB flash drive, or other media (depending on the size of your iPhoto library). Then, you'd copy the iPhoto Library from that media to the same location on your iMac.
Using the Finder, navigate to your Home folder (or click on Go from the menu bar and click on Home). Open the Pictures folder, select your iPhoto Library and then from the menu bar choose "Edit" and then "Copy". Then navigate to your external disk, click on "Edit", and then click on "Paste".
Then, insert your media on the iMac, and copy the iPhoto Library from your external media to the same location on your iMac (the Pictures folder located under your Home folder).
Hope that helps, have a great day.

  • What's the best way to delete 2.4 million of records from table?

We are having two tables one is production one and another is temp table which data we want to insert into production table. temp table having 2.5 million of records and on the other side production table is having billions of records. the thing which we want to do just simple delete already existed records from production table and then insert the remaining records from temp to production table.
Can anyone guide what's the best way to do this?

If you really just want to insert the records and don't want to update the matching ones and you're already on 10g you could use the "DML error logging" facility of the INSERT command, which would log all failed records but succeeds for the remaining ones.
You can create a suitable exception table using the DBMS_ERRLOG.CREATE_ERROR_LOG procedure and then use the "LOG ERRORS INTO" clause of the INSERT command. Note that you can't use the "direct-path" insert mode (APPEND hint) if you expect to encounter UNIQUE CONSTRAINT violations, because this can't be logged and cause the direct-path insert to fail. Since this is a "live" table you probably don't want to use the direct-path insert anyway.
See the manuals for more information: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/statements_9014.htm#BGBEIACB
    Sample taken from 10g manuals:
CREATE TABLE raises (emp_id NUMBER, sal NUMBER
       CONSTRAINT check_sal CHECK(sal > 8000));
    EXECUTE DBMS_ERRLOG.CREATE_ERROR_LOG('raises', 'errlog');
    INSERT INTO raises
       SELECT employee_id, salary*1.1 FROM employees
       WHERE commission_pct > .2
       LOG ERRORS INTO errlog ('my_bad') REJECT LIMIT 10;
    SELECT ORA_ERR_MESG$, ORA_ERR_TAG$, emp_id, sal FROM errlog;
    ORA_ERR_MESG$               ORA_ERR_TAG$         EMP_ID SAL
    ORA-02290: check constraint my_bad               161    7700
(HR.SYS_C004266) violatedIf the number of rows in the temp table is not too large and you have a suitable index on the large table for the lookup you could also try to use a NOT EXISTS clause in the insert command:
    INSERT INTO <large_table>
    SELECT ...
    FROM TEMP A
    WHERE NOT EXISTS (
    SELECT NULL
    FROM <large_table> B
    WHERE B.<lookup> = A.<key>
);But you need to check the execution plan, because a hash join using a full table scan on the <large_table> is probably something you want to avoid.

Not all functions and data are externally accessible. Only those business objects (e.g. like sales order, customer, material) for which BAPIs are available (transaction BAPI ) can be accessed via RFC.

  • What's the best way to create XML file with a schema from a database table?

    Hi,
I want to create an XML file from a database table (which has over 600 columns) using XML schema (.xsd file). I want to know the best way to do this.
The output XML file is NOT a direct data dump from the DB table, therere some logic around it, such as the XML file has some hierarchy with repeating tags.
I have done this using JAXB by creating Java classes form XML schema, but I dont want to map 600 DB columns to these Java classes manually, and loop through the record set to create repeating tags.
I know there are few tools around now like MapForce (Altova), how do people do these now?
    Thanks,
    Chandi

Can you use a schema when we compose XML doc from Database tables?
Actually, I'm using SQL Server (sorry, wrong forum). But, I thought a Java tool would have a solution for me.

  • What is the best way to move part of my iTunes library to an external drive?

After many years of collecting iTunes content on my Mac, I'm starting to get low on internal hard drive space. I'd like to move my movies and tv shows to an external drive while keeping all other content where it is. I have found numerous explanations on how to do this, but they vary widely in their methods and most of them are at least a couple of years old.
Could anyone with recent experience share with me the best practices for doing this? In addition, I'd love to know this: Although I have a firewire external drive, but I don't keep it connected at all times and would prefer to put the files on my Time Capsule, since it connects to the Mac wirelessly. Would that work?
    Thank you!

I don't think it is easy to move part of a collection unless you don't care about the metadata such as date added, etc.  You can copy the files to the other drive, delete in iTunes the references to the copies still on your computer, then hold down the option key while dragging the files on the external to iTunes so it doesn't copy them back to your internal but just references them where they are.  You have to remember to do this each time.  Either that, or set preferences so iTunes does not automatically copy any file to your media folder when added but leaves them all where they land on your computer.  You can move them by hand around the computer, but not between drives.
You could try Dougscript "Move Files To Folder" but I don't know if this enables iTunes to track items moved to a different drive.  iTunes doesn't really like using multiple drives.
As for using Time Capsule, I have seen various takes on this.  I recall reading somebody saying it isn't a good idea to have a backup drive competing for dual purposes.  My take on it is, TC is a backup, period.  If you keep your movies on it and the TC drive dies, you lose your only copy of the movies.
How often do you really watch these movies?  Yes, it is nice having them appear in iTunes, but unless you are watching them every day then it isn't a huge burden to have them on another drive.  Frankly, if I had iTunes movies I would probably make a whole different library for them and start from it with the external drive turned on when I was in a movie mood.

  • What's the best way to smart-copy a large folder tree over internet?

On my Mac at home, a G5 running Panther, I have some data in a large folder tree (about 40 Gigs-worth, about 3 folder levels deep in all). At work, I have an Intel Mac Pro running Tiger. I'd like to copy the data, but much of it is already in place, so I need a smart-copy application that won't copy what's already there. This is most important because any normal copy process of this type will interrupt at some point and if I re-start, I don't want to restart from the very beginning. I guess I could bring the whole thing on a portable hard drive but in the future, I want to keep the work machine synchronized with the home one. What's a good Panther-compatible smart-copy application that can work over the internet?
    Mike

Back up all your files to external media. If you don't want this computer to access your iTunes material then "deauthorize" the computer in iTunes. Create a new account on your Mac with admin rights. Delete your old Mac account. Run disk utility and erase unused space.
If you have an iPhone then use the Remote app rather than the Apple remote clicker.
The new ApplyTV has some very good media center features. While using AirPlay you can also stream music thru the AppleTV.
If you're running Lion you made need to upgrade the memory to reduce page swaps.

  • What is the best way to ensure broadcast-ready files to DMDS from Adobe Premiere Pro CC?

After submitting my 708 closed-caption HD video to DMDB for broadcast they said there were no captions.
I initially exported the video as a .MXF file from Premiere Pro CC. In my source preview window the closed captions appear, but for some reason DMDS could not read them. Im looking for a way to get closed-caption videos broadcast ready for submittal to DMDS.
In addition, when close-captioning for 708, the closed caption text appears with dots between each character in a word, and the background color is shifted to the right, leaving the first letter of each caption hangin out of it's background. Im assuming it's a Premiere Pro CC glitch, but I'd like to be able to communicate this with some certainty to any clients who may ask about it.
    Pleas advise.

    Very interesting.
I'm about to submit HD captioned spot for Extreme Reach, they specify only an mpeg2 transport
stream for keeping the captioning data.
I did the 608 and 708 captions just above the video 1 track in premiere cc and they check
out when setting the caption previewer to 608 or 708 in the program monitor.
if I import that mpeg2 file BACK into premiere and play it the captions
    are not showing.
I Just now exported an .mxf and saw an option to EMBED captions in the file
instead of just the side car option normally there.
THAT WORKED!  re-importing to premiere I see the captioning on track 2 and 3
    and they do play.
But Extreme Reach requires the captioning in an mpeg2 TS container, not mxf.
I tried converting the mxf to mpeg TS but the captioning gets stripped out.
    any ideas or suggestions?
