I and My GS70

Below is an interesting open box review I found in a forum. Hope you find it interesting as well.
Starting the idea of buying a new laptop has been a while…
I got my Asus A8JS five years ago and now it’s getting slower and slower. Hmmm…it’s time to weed it out! Well then l got a long list of recommendations from forums/friends… in the end I was struggling between MSI GS70 and Macbook Pro… After days of consideration, I finally chose GS70. I’ve considered:
1. Gaming: am a loyal (but casual) gamer of LOL and Lineage
2. Portability: I prefer to use my own laptop to game wherever I go.
3. Big/light screen: 17” is MUCH MORE comfortable for my eyes, and with this big screen, GS70 is still not heavy.
Now let’s unbox! Woohoo!
There’s a bundled backpack inside of the box!
The pack quality is quite nice, feels like I just bought a Lamborghini of laptops!
Hmmm from my view the backpack is okay, though I think I will use the laptop cover more than the backpack. It will be greater with a side belt or a nicer design of anti-vibration shock layer inside.
Now comes GS70!
Black design makes it an oriental feeling – This is my secret weapon -
Left side is an adapter, and the upper side is a gaming mouse. I’ve tried and it’s not bad.
My GS70!
Less than 5 minutes for OS setting.
Applause to GS70 design team! Smart design of packing cellophane – only needs one step to clear all stickers.
Including backside.
The two speakers under the MSI logo and the backside subwoofer composed this 2.1chanel specker.
With its stylish look, GS70 also surprising got super fast working efficiency! I was the first to finish loading LOL while some of the other teammates only reached 21%!
Intel Core i7 processor/NVIDIA GeForce GTX765M/2 SSD Hard rive + 1 traditional hard drive make GS70 unbelievably fast – start/ turn off the laptop in seconds!
GS70 also accompanies with SteelSeries full color gaming keyboard – I LOVE that I can customize my own preference of LED backlight color!
Very fine quality of the Gaming series Logo on the backside
Just slim. Around 2 iphones thick.
GS70 touch pad also supports scroll up/down and even expand/shrink image functions. Quite convenient while surfing webpages.
Scroll up/down function
Expand/shrink function
Last but not least, the IO ports. There are 4 USB 3.0 ports (2 on each side)/1 HDMI/2 mini display ports to support multi display up to 3 monitors.
Strong advantages:
- Simple yet stylish look
- Strong working efficiency
- UK Hardware Heaven Gold award (Designed by Taiwan)
Points not that charming:
- Not come cheap
- Hard to find a cool cover/backpack for a 17” laptop
- Still can’t get used to Windows 8…may try to switch back to Windows 7.. (or Mac OS X 10.6…hehehe)

nice....
+you kinda look like Min Liang Tan of Razer :D

• MSI GE70 vs GS70

Hey, guys, I'm new here but not really new to gaming laptops or PCs. I've recently decided to sell my custom build gaming PC because college is getting to the point where I need a decent mobile laptop over a full-on rig. I've been trying to decide between the GE70 and the GS70 because they're both high-mobility 17" laptops with decent GPUs that I can still use for my normal gaming uses. I'm just not sure which one to get. Both have very similar specs but I'm not so sure that the GS70 (with the SSDs and the lighter, thinner body) is worth $500 more than the GE70. I know this may be a biased board to come to when deciding between money but I was hoping to talk to people that own either of the laptops and/or maybe have had to go through a decision like this. Either way, thank you for the help! I appreciate it!

Yeah, I've thought about that. In a lot of benchmarks, the GE70 actually scores a bit better because the GS70 can throttle a bit because of the heat. Let me ask you this (if you know), the GS70 is said to be somewhere around 5.8lbs and 0.85" thick. The GE70 is supposed to be around 6.6lbs and 1.56" thick. How much of a difference is there really? Unfortunately, I live in New Jersey so the only computer store that would have either of these laptops on display is Microcenter and they don't so I don't have the convenience of just walking in and seeing for myself.
Honestly, size is the major deciding factor. I want something really portable but again, I'm not so sure $500 is worth the difference. That; and the multi-colored GS70 keyboard is nice. Two other things: I know the the GS70 has an almost complete aluminum body while the back of the GE70's screen is plastic. Is it cheap in any way? I've always been a bit careful of plastic screens since one of my friends went through two Toshiba laptop screens because the back was plastic. That, and with the GE70...what about an SSD? I know from reviews that the laptop has a slot for an SSD but removing the back cover voids the warranty. I'd most likely be buying either laptop from TigerDirect or Newegg but I don't think they'd put one in for me. Any suggestions on how to put one in without voiding the warranty?
Use some books to get an idea about the weight. You can use a bathroom scale or something similar to figure that out. Even the size you can use the books to figure it out if you're good about it. Personally, the difference in 'size' is negligible. The difference in weight is 0.8 lbs.
The GT70 I have has an all plastic back behind the screen. Honestly, just take care of it and it shouldn't be a problem. Be careful opening and closing the lid as if you do it too fast it could be a problem.
The GE70 2OX series actually has 2 slots for mSATA SSD's, so you could technically use 2 of them in a RAID configuration for high performance and get double the storage. Just something else to consider.....
Opening the bottom does NOT void the warranty. You need to open the bottom to upgrade it (ie add memory, another HDD/SSD, etc...), so that cannot void the warranty. This is also posted in our FAQ section here, as it gets asked quite a bit. If you doubt me, contact MSI directly and ask them. >>How to contact MSI.<<
I would go for the GE70 overall. Just going to be a better machine for you I think.

• The 10 best laptops: MSI GS70 is the only winner in gaming laptops

Check out "The 10 Best laptops from PCmag.com" and MSI GS70 is the only winner in gaming laptops category. Cool~
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2369981,00.asp

Wow, looks like you guys get some nice extras over in Asia. I bought mine here in the USA, and the only "extra" I got was the laptop sleeve case.
As for your questions.....
Turbo boost from Intel is sorta set to automatic. It will boost based on the program you are running on the system. As for Cooler Boost 2.0....I don't remember seeing that on my GS70.
Killer Wireless is always on. On average, I get downloads of 4.6-5 MB a second on Steam. So you don't need to do anything special to get it working.
As for your HDD selection....
I have the 256 GB SSD/16 GB RAM edition, so I keep my SSD clean except for system related programs. The only programs I have installed on the SSD are things like Office 2013 Professional Plus, and smaller programs like the Starcraft Anthology USB. You'll want to install everything on your Data drive, since this was made to store all of your games, music, videos, etc.

• Gizmodo Reviews GS60 Ghost & GS70 Stealth in Round-Up

Gizmodo just finished their round-up of the best thin and light gaming laptops and rated the MSI GS60 Ghost and GS70 Stealth as one of the best thin and light gaming laptops. It came up on top over ASUS’s latest thin and light G501, Aorus X3 Plus, Alienware 13, Acer Aspire V17 Nitro, HP Omen and more.
“The $1750 MSI GS60 Ghost Pro and $1800 GS70 Stealth Pro are almost identical—both sport a classy aluminum chassis (I was struck by how strong yet thin each of them were), excellent SteelSeries keyboards, well-balanced Dynaudio speakers and plenty of power under the hood."

the "SHIFT" function is new on GTX900 series and three modes been provided for users to change the freq/fan speed/temp results by different scenario.
It's suitable for users who need to change the scenarios by their needs and pretty convenient for dropping temp/fan noise.

I like the Shift function, so you can decide which mode that you wanna use, just like modern cars, one button to race, and press again to be Hybrid…cool!!

• GS70 Saving Files Between SSD and HDD

Hey there,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to change preferences for saving files on my GS70? I want all of my games and programs on the SSD's, but for pictures and videos and such, I want those on the HDD. Is there a way I can change the settings so it's easier to save music/pictures/videos etc. to the HDD, rather than just saving the file and then copying it over? Thanks
purdy44

Thanks for the help guys, I went into properties and changed my documents, music, etc from C: to D:. So Simple!
Now I have an off topic question: On the GS70, what is the middle audio jack? The one closest to me is the microphone, the one closest to the screen is the headphone jack, but I have no clue what the middle one is! Anyone care to enlighten me?

• GS70 (970M) and Windows 10

Hello, everybody!
For those of you thinking about upgrading your GS70 to Windows 10 but are unsure of the consequences, have no fear! I've decided to be the guinea pig. I have the 099 model so the 4720HQ and the 970M 6GB.
Upgrade went pretty smoothly, ...

also try amazon as they have them fairly cheap! (i had one of them break on me recently and had to buy a new one from amazon - look up amd retention bracket on there and buy one)

• GS70 SP, types and numbers of storage?

How many slots for ssd and hdd's are there in total? I would assume 3 ssd slots and 1 hdd slot if I read the specs correctly.
Seeing it comes with 2 ssd and it says you can add one more(for 1500 mb/s bla bla).
Now, am I correct if I assume the OS is on the ssd when getting the pc from factory?
I would like to replace the stock hdd for a 4,5 or maybe 6 tb hdd from WD. Is the hdd 3,5" and is there any issues in simply replacing it before booting up the pc for the first time?
Lastly, is the ssd's 2,5"? Will be replacing those as well when they get cheaper.
Thanks

1. If you have GS70 with GTX860M/GTX 870M, then it has 3 msata ssd slots and 1 2.5" hdd slot.
You can check the post of Storage Options.
2. Yes, the OS will be on the ssd.
3. For replacing hdd, you should be careful of the compatibility issue. Maybe you can google the model of hdd you want to replace and see if there is any user already try it on the GS70.

• GS70 Stealth after update new bios and firmware

my GS70 after update the new BIOS w8_E1771IMS.50E and Firmware w8_1771EMS1.508 now laptop become so warm...
when i am playing game the CPU temperature can reach 90'c。

4th Generation Core i7's are pretty well known to generate more heat than the 3rd generation, and as such the expected temperatures for the mobile chips has tended to be higher than the previous generation.
90C is getting hot. On top of all that, you're in a GS70 case, which is small and very enclosed, which means the cooling is going to be even worse. 90C all things considered, isn't terrible. At 100C I would start worrying.
If it worries you this much though, call MSI and see what they think.

• Unlock BIOS and change Keyboard layout MSI laptop GS70 2OD-002US

Confirmation: 2CS96102H81542105
My model is GS70 2OD-002US with Dual SSD RAID 0. I also have Ubuntu 14.04 installed in the RAID array besides Windows 8.1 (updated from Win 8 that came with the Laptop.
Could you please fully unlock my BIOS and add all the extra stuff you have? I also need to reconfigure my keyboard. I have attached an image of the layout I need, and the following are the changes explained.
1. Swap Left CTRL and Left ALT
2. Swap Fn and Windows Key
3. Convert the "extra \ key" next to the spacebar into a HOME key
4. Convert Right ALT GR key into an END key
5. Convert Right CTRL into Right Click (pop-up menu key)
6. Swap the Caps Lock Key and LEFT SHIFT key
I installed the lastest BIOS from the MSI Site using the DOS method (70E) update. BIOS info is in the screenshot. After unlocking will I be able to set fan speeds from BIOS? If I want fan speed tweak should I give you the fan percentage that should be mapped to the temparature in C?
Thank you so much for your effort. Hope you will PM me with further instructions.

• MSI GS70 Temperature and battery problem?

Hello All,
I just bought my GS70 on 2/9/2014 and I have been noticing some serious fan noises from time to time. I eventually got curious and installed Core Temp. All cores average around 126F (54c). Are these numbers too high? Should I be concerned? What are my options?
I also discovered a problem with my battery yesterday. After shutting down yesterday, I disconnected the power from the computer. This morning I tried to turn the computer on but it was unresponsive. I attempted several times all with the same results. I then saw that my power was disconnected and plugged it back in and it turned on fine. However, Windows display that my battery is at 100 percent.
I grew suspicious that it was an isolated event. To test, I against shut down the computer first, then after it was shut down I disconnected the Power plug on the unit. After couple hours I again try to turn it on and was unable to. I then reconnected the power plug and was able to turn on. Against Windows had my battery at 100 percent. I was wondering if anyone else had this situation.
Any help or advices regrading my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hello,
About the CPU temp is normal
About battery can you boot on the battery immediately after you turn it off with ac charger disconnected?
[Without hours of waiting]
Do EC reset: https://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/how-to-reset-the-ec-embedded-controller
then see how its goes.
Also tell your current BIOS and EC versions, look for them in BIOS Setup, system information.

• How GE series and GS70 presents on Bioshock Infinite game?

Personally I like this game a lot because it's fantasy historical advanture game.
It also comes with time shift and space-time travel in the gaming experience,
so the lighting and fog effects is very beautiful, but the 3D loading is heavy.
Let's take a look on the FPS rate with Bioshock Infinite built in benchmarks.
You could see that GTX765M is good and smooth on 1600x900 Ultra detail,
the FPS (Frames Per Second) rate over 20 is playable, over 30 called smooth.
The GTX765M is smooth enough to play, but GTX760M and GT750M is not good.
So if you want to play this game with GT750M, need to set 1600x900 High detail.
I would like to say the FPS gap is really something from GTX765M and GT750M,
and if you want to play on Full HD resolution, GT series will be your best choice!

OK, that's very clear and helpful
that ultra slim gaming laptop GS70 featuring NVIDIA GTX765M, it is very smooth to play BIOSHOCK at HD high setting , even the ultra setting is also great to play BIOSHOCK INFINITI....cool !

• New GS70 stealth pro scratches near keyboard and scratched up MSI badge on rear (sealed in box)

Hello;
I just received my GS70 and love it except for 2 issues that I noticed when I took it out of the box. There are scratches all around the outer edge of the laptop keyboard and power button but not on the palm rest, the MSI badge is almost pretty scratched up on the back. I was wondering if anyone else exprienced this issue and if I should RMA through newegg for another one. The laptop was sealed in the box I got. I dont mean to be anal, but this was a 2000 dollar laptop; just trying to figure out what to do.
Thanks

- - - Updated - - -
Which GS70 do you have btw? I have the 970m equipped model
Np , i dont really think MSI would of put a scratched device in a box and pack it in like that most of times new devices are taken with care then it's up to the repair center how they take it and so on
Update: mine is GTX 870M since i paid 13990SEK for mine and if i wanted GTX 970M it would cost me up to 20.000SEK :/ so yeah i have my beast at home instead while i use my laptop for take out at work and so some times gaming on it but not heavy gaming since then i will do that at home.

Does the GS70 Stealth Pro-099 work with Kensington Locks (Does it have the Security Slot)?

It should be on the right side along with the card reader slot and USB ports, between the power connector and ventilation slots.
Thanks! I just wanted to be sure before purchasing one of the locks.

• Model and brand name of the hdd and msata provided with msi gs70 stealth 077

i would like to know which brand and model is the hdd and msata is used in the msi gs70 stealth 077 series laptop.
also can i add one more msata myself after buying the laptop?

just a note hchg, apperently i think msi uses Hitachi and TOSHIBA drives in all of their GS70 so it shouldn't depend up on country since Hitachi apperently is a quality drive so since your paying hige price for laptop which means you get quality hard disk it's not like msi would put WD drive or SEAGATE drive in any of their MSI models at such price.
