HT201250 i would like to use time machine but also back up other file to my external drive?
I just got a WD T3 external hard drive and I would like to use time machine but also back up other files that to the drive. Can anyone help me out.
Thanks MarkYou would need to go to your Applications folder>Utilities>Disk Utility> and there create Two Partitions on your external hard drive, naming them differently. Then you could go back to your desktop, open the dock, right click on the Time Machine icon and select "Open Time Machine Preferences". In there select the external hard drive Partition that you want to use for TM. The other external drive partition will be available for other uses.
Hope this helps -
How do I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up files stored on an AirDisk?
I have a Macbook Pro 17-inch, Mid 2009, with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. I use an external HDD connected directly to my Mac via FireWire 800 for Time Machine backups. I have an external HDD connected to my Airport Extreme (Gigabit) router that I use for file storage. My iTunes library and iPhoto library are both stored on this AirDisk. Can I use Time Machine on my Mac to back up the files that I store on my AirDisk? If so, then please describe how to do so. Thank you for your assistance.
Unmount and physcially disconnect the TimeMachine drive and reboot the computer without it being connected.
Reboot the comptuer with the disk inside the machine holding the option or c key down, select the disk to boot from.
Second screen in is the installer, under the Ulitites menu is Disk Utility.
Use Disk Utility to Erase with Security option Zero all Data if your planning to wipe the drive and install 10.6
Don't do the above if your simply reinstalling only OS X 10.6 to cure a problem with it.

Bought new TimeCapsule March 2013. Worked fine. Now get "No configured AirPort base stations have been found." I can see the content of the TimeCapsule's drive in finder and Time Machine but it no longer is making backups. Ideas?
Make sure that you have AirPort Utility 6.3.1 installed on your Mac.
AirPort Utility 6.3.1 for Mac - Support - Apple
Then, power off the entire network...all devices...in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the next device connected to the modem, which may be your Time Capsule and let it run a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time the same way until the entire network is back up
See if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule now.
If yes, try another backup. If you encounter an error message, post back with the exact message. -

Purchased a new, larger solid state drive to replace my old drive. I installed OSX then I had Time Machine do it's magic.
Now when I want to do a backup using Time Machine, it tells me that the external HD is full. When I did so prior to upgrade, it would erase old backups and then do a new backup.
Please help. I am worried about losing files, and am tired of seeing the "Time Machine hasn't backed up in xxx days" Error Message.
Thanks.it thinks yours is a new machine so it doesn't want to start deleting another machine's backups

I'm really wanting to make room on my Mac Mini. I have about 70 gb left. I'm not sure what to do. I'm using Time Machine to regularly backup my computer and its already full and deleting older backups. I used to, in the past before Time Machine, just drag and drop files into an external hard drive and empty the file from my computer. Should I follow a similar procedure here? If I have time machine backup up, and I remove all my files from the computer, will Time Machine begin to backup a "clean" machine onto the external drive and begin deleting past backups? What would be the best way to approach my backups, remove all my files from my computer since a variation of them are already on time machine, and not lose viable backups? Thank you.
If you erase the hard disk and you install a new Mac OS X copy, Time Machine will start a new backup and will stop using all backups you made in the past.
One option you have is to reinstall Mac OS X and restore a Time Machine backup, but restoring only some files: for example, instead of restoring everything, restore only your user files, and not your applications, so you will have more free space. Also, doing this, Time Machine will continue backing up to your old backup, because Time Machine will detect that you have "the same computer with the same files and the same Mac OS X version", but it's not.

Backup a network drive using Time Machine
Hi all,
I have the following setup running. I have a Time Capsule that I am now using as an external drive to hold my iTunes and Aperture libraries. This works great! Attached to the Time Capsule I have a 2TB external disc that is used to back up my computer. This also works great! Now comes the question: Can I have the Time Capsule backed up onto to the external 2TB disc along with my computers backup?
Hope you can help, thanksYou can "archive" the TC's internal disk to an attached USB drive, but it's not very satisfactory. See the green box in #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.
For alternatives, see Kappy's post on +Basic Backup,+ complete with links to the web sites of each product. I don't know which will do it, but CarbonCopyCloner won't back up a network drive, and I think SuperDuper won't, either. -
Can two HDs be backed up to the external using Time Machine
Here is my situation: I am using a MBP with the standard 160 GB HD. I am sure glad I went for the 160 GB instead of the "faster" 100 GB option because I'm down to just 15 GB now!
One huge file is my iPhoto 08 library, which has about 35 GB of photos in it - way over 20,000 photos and video clips from over 20 years now.
I want to use Time Machine to keep backups of it, but it really does take up a lot of MBP space.
I also have a portable USB HD I bought for my recent trip. It has like 240 GB of space on it - plenty to handle the iPhoto 08 library. I think there is an option in iPhoto for specifying that the library be on an external disk, right?
What I was wondering, if I put the iPhoto 08 library on the external portable USB HD, would it still get backed up with Time Machine, as though it were on my MBP internal drive?
Thanks,
dougTime Machine will back up external drives if they are formatted in Mac OS Extended or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Most drives ship formatted FAT32. The directions in this article are for formatting a Time Machine drive but they do a good job of getting rid of the FAT32 formatting so they will work for your purposes as well. People with PPC Macs should substitute Apple Partition Map for GUID when following the directions.
You also may have to drag the drive you want to back up out of Time Machine's "Do not back up" pane which is in System Preferences > Time Machine under Options.
+I am sure glad I went for the 160 GB instead of the "faster" 100 GB option because I'm down to just 15 GB now!+
You're skating on very thin ice. Mac OS X likes about fifteen to twenty percent of free disk space to function properly. An overly full disk can cause some extremely nasty problems.

One backup is not adequate for this type of data that usually has a lot of sentimental or business value. It would be best if you kept two copies of the data on different hard drives using different back up software. It would also be a very good idea to burn all your files to DVD/CD as well. One copy of the backups should be stored offsite. -
How to backup a network share using Time Machine
My Mac connects to several network shares on my network.
I'm having Time Machine running backups to a local attached USB disc. Works great.
But I would very much like to backup up the network shares as well - how do I do that using Time Machine?Apple does not support backing up to a network share. Why? Who knows. but you can find a "hack" here:

Hi, i can find my mail.plist by opening library/preferences holding the option key, but I can't replicate this when i'm searching for the same file in time machine. I have somehow deleted my mail settings and am trying to restore using time machine. Any ideas? Thanks
In Finder under Library/Preferences/ i found the following which I think is what you are looking for:
I "highlighted" this file in Finder FIRST, and then leaving Finder Open, I also opened Time Machine and when TM opened, Finder was displayed in it as seen above and I could then select dates going back to Restore this file from just fine.

Kernel Panic, Restored System Using Time Machine but Problems Still Persis
SOS! Please, please, please help. I'm at a loss here. I have an 300 GB iMac with a 32 GB partition for Windows. I backup to an Iomega UltraMax 500 GB external hard drive. Let me know if more info is needed. I went through the checklists to resolve a kernel panic, and nothing has been working. Here's the background:
I recently encountered a kernel panic (I saw the screen discussed in the "What is a kernel panic?" article). It started when Firefox 3.2 beta was running. It froze and eventually the system froze. I repaired disk permissions, and I was able to boot up, but it took awhile to boot up. Some things weren't right once it was booted; I lost some keyboard functionality, system settings (screen saver, display settings, etc), etc. I attempted to repair the disk (using disk utility while booted from leopard install disc), but it failed (generated an error, said it couldn't repair disk). So I did the next thing and restored the system from Time Machine. Things seemed to be alright.
And about a couple days later, Time Machine starting encountering errors and failed to backup (it failed while attempting to backup 300 MB). The system also started to get slower, and it eventually froze. So I restored again from Time Machine. Seemed to be alright, but again it eventually slowed and started freezing.
I can't retrieve the panic log. I think it was erased with one of my system restores. I went into Time Machine to look for it, and it's nowhere to be found.
So, I tried to repair my disk permissions. That succeeded. But the disk repair failed again. I restored again from Time Machine. Same thing: things seem okay, but Time Machine isn't able to back-up (it's pretty much non-responsive, even after I told it to stop, it just says "stopping"), things are a bit slow and some applications are unstable (Firefox crashed for no apparent reason). I just found this under /Library/Logs/Crash Reporter:

Windows XP ran fine from my other partition at this point. I'm wondering if my Windows partition has something to do with it (I chose FAT32 instead of NTFS file system)?
Please help. Will erasing the drive, reinstalling from the leopard disc (10.5.4), and restoring select applications/folders/files help, instead of from a system restore from Time Machine?
Your help is immensely appreciated! Thanks for responding.
So under the partition tab, I should reformat to one partition, reinstall Leopard, and see what happens from there? Selectively restore applications, music, pictures to my system once it's reinstalled and properly updated? Anything else I may need to do or restore?
Why not reformat under the erase tab, zero out the disk, and reinstall? Any difference?
Just a little worried and unsure is all. If it's a hardware thing, I can accept that and take it in to be serviced. But, if it is a software issue, I don't want to do any irreparable harm during the erase-and-reinstall process. Just want to make sure I get it right.

I have never used Time Machine, but local snapshots "MobileBackups" show up. Why?
I want to use Carbon Copy Cloner to make backups periodically. Therefore, I have never used Time Machine. My TM preference is always OFF. However, I noticed that I have local snapshots on my Volumes folder which is a function of TM to keep backup when I am away from TM backup disk. WHY?
I just want to know why it LOCAL SNAPSHOT shows up although I have never turned on TIME MACHINE on this MacBook Pro EVER. Please dont tell me how to turn Local Snapshots off, I knew the command.
Thank you in advance!AFAIK, it's mommy Apple protecting your laptop from yourself. See Pondini's TM FAQs for possible clarification on this nonsense. I, likewise, don't use TM, preferring CCC bootable clones, but I don't have a laptop.

HT4927 Using Time Machine but can't find iphoto library anywhere for replacement
I'm having issues with a few wierd duplicate iphoto Events so I thought I would use my Time Machine for the 1st time and just restor the Library ONLY (not all of iphoto, just the library) to sometime last month and go from there. BUT....................
Nothing I have seems to match any useful info I can find on this forum. My iMac is OSX 10.8.2/iphoto 11 vs9.4.2 (everything is latest-updated)
I go into Time Machine, pick a date from early last month, and I see....."All My Files/ Desktop/Applications/Documents" then in Devices are
my external drives. Thats it. Where is the "iphoto library"? I feel like I'm missing something. When I look up the subject in this forum under Time Machine, it says to open Finder 1st (why I don't know), then open Time Machine (of course) but the sample picuture of Apples Website of Time Machine doesn't look like my Time Machine as I've just described.
Even in FINDER I see All My Files/Desktop/Applications/Documents: nothing that says "iphoto Library" (I can find "iPhoto" in Applications, but the application is fine, it's just the messed up 4 or 5 events I want to fix by going back to my library from last month, which was fine).
I assume that I need to:
1-close iphoto (done)
2-open Time machine and pick my date (done)
3- here is my problem (i think): I don't see a "iphoto library" to click on and then click on something that says "replace". I've never had to use time machine so I don't know what it will look like.
