I believe OS 10.10.2 is causing my mac to freeze every few seconds.

For the last two weeks or so, my MacBook Pro (2011) has been freezing every few seconds. I can barley type this now. When I pull up Activity Monitor, it shows my memory running at 3.0+ out of 4 GB's. I've tried everything I could think of. My Mac is more of a internet surfing comp so I didn't mind reinstalling OS. It worked great for about 30 minutes then everything started to freeze again. Im curious if anyone else is having this issue and if anyone's figured out how to fix it. I ran a diagnostic on my ram and thats not the issue. Im to the point of upgrading my ram but i think it's dumb reverting to that when the 4 GB has been plenty for me in the past.
Thank You.

• Why is my CPU spiking, causing the desktop to reboot every few seconds?

I watch the CPU reading in the Disk Monitor spike in usage (from about 5% to 100%) every 30-90 seconds. Every time it does, the desktop reboots, taking me away from whatever program I am using to the Finder. What should I do?

• Mac server hangs every few days. where to look for cause?

I have a Mac server that hangs every few days and requires a hard reboot.
It is run headless so we have no screen feed back of what is happening when it hangs.
It is possible that just the network communications fail. But it is in software because a reboot restores the situation everytime.
I could use some advice on where to look for possible causes: which logs, or dumps that are produced by the system.
Thanks

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

• G550 causes DLink router to reboot every 10 seconds

I have a new Lenovo G550, running Vista Home Premium 64-bit and a new DLink WBR-1310 wireless router. Each time the laptop connects to the router through either a wireless connection or a LAN cable connection the router crashes. Then the router rebooys, establishes a connection with the laptop, communication starts and the router crashes again. The cycle continues until I disconnect the laptop. The crash-reboot-crash cycle takes about 10 seconds.
I tested a different router. A TrendNet TEW-432BRP router. The same thing happens. The router crashes as soon as the laptop is able to communicate with the router.
I've taken the laptop to work where I used Microsoft Windows Update and Lenovo Update to ensure that all drivers on the laptop are updated. The only S/W on the laptop is Microsoft Office Pro 2007 and AVG-free (anti-virus) + the S/W that comes with the G550.
At work, the laptop does not crash the router. But at work it does not connect directly to the router. Instead it is connected by LAN cable through a Vonage VOIP system. Meaning the laptop is connected by a LAN cable to the Vonage VOIP unit. And the Vonage unit is connected by a LAN cable to the router.
I also tested the laptop at a couple of public and hotel wireless connections. The laptop is able to connect to these public wireless systems without causing them to crash.
Back at home, the DLink and TrendNet routers work OK with older computers running Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Home Basic. The DLink also has the latest firmware. WBR-1310 H/W: B1, firmware 2.02.
AVG does not report any viruses and the AVG log file contains no record of finding one in the past.
The router has no custom settings. It is configured with factory defaults. The laptop's network connections (for the LAN and wireless connections) have no custom settings. The laptop's network connections are configured to obtain IP address and DNS server addresses automatically.
My theory about the problem = something in the communication between the laptop & router crashes the router. Perhaps there is something in Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Perhaps something in the Lenovo S/W.
I am looking for help.
Thank you.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I had this problem too.  Specifically a Dlink router (WBR-1310) and a Lenovo laptop (Y530) running Vista Home (32-bit).  It would show that my laptop connected to the network, then a few seconds later the connection would be down and it would continuously connect/disconnect.  My other system that was connected just fine through the router (running Windows 7) would get kicked off the network.  Connecting the Vista laptop directly to the cable modem, though, would work just fine.
Found this post, and it worked for me.  http://www.justanswer.com/questions/1wau3-bought-lenovo-laptop-y430
Just go into your Dlink configuration's Advanced tab, then the Advanced Network sub-tab.  Uncheck the UPnP (universal plug and play), save the settings, and let the router reboot.
Now both my systems (Vista and Windows 7) are happy and connected through the router.

• Upgrade to 10.4.5 Caused Spotlight & Clock to Blink Every 15 Seconds

Installed Tiger 10.4.3 and everything worked great, then updated with Combo to 10.4.5 and the clock and Spotlight in upper right hand corner keep blinking once every 10 seconds. Can't use the Spotlight unless you catch it perfectly on that one second. Tried downloading manual version of update from Apple, and it goes all the way to the end and then Safari quits. Updated through Software Update. Went to Date & Time and if i check the box for Date & Time it just unchecks itself.

Computer crashed not long after this!! Long story!!

• Firefox 21 causing flash to freeze every 10 seconds

Two days ago, I updated Firefox to version 21. Now, YouTube and all Flash videos freeze after 12 seconds of play. If i move the video frame one second, it plays for another 12 seconds and freezes again at second 24 frame and so on freezing every 12 seconds. I have updated Flash, but this didn't change anything. Also, no sound on videos. This only started right after i updated to Firefox 21. Now , I can't figure out how to go back to Firefox 20 and I can't watch videos.

• Why does Sharing to Media Browser cause my Mac to freeze?

I have an iMAC with an intel Core 2 Duo and 3 GB of Memory. I am running Mac OS X 10.6.8
I just got the new iLife 11 package. We have a Panasonic HDC-TM90 I shot video using AVCHD setting.
I was able to inport into iMovie, view, edit, set up themes, set up my project - yadda yadda yadda
I am now trying to Share the project so that I can burn it to DVD. I tried to share to the media browser and have tried selecting HD 1080p, HD 720p, and Large - All attempts have resulted in my computer locking up.

Hi
A. Why HD 1080p or HD 720p ? (not for making a DVD I hope as this will not give any good result)
(for iDVD - Do - Share to Media Browser and as Large to get best possibly outcome (Never Share to iDVD))
(BTW - no DVD can be HD-DVDs any more and only a rare number of Toshiba HD-DVD players could Playback. DVD is as standard interlaced SD-Video)
B. Free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk - for use of standard def video (SD-Video) I never go under 25Gb free space - and if material is in HD I guess that 4-5 times more will do as a minimum)
Yours Bengt W

• Flash video causes my Mac mini to crash displaying blocks of stripes

As you can see from the picture below, flash video sometimes (often though) causes my Mac mini with Intel Graphics HD 3000 crashes while displaying blocks of stripes and repeating "tick" noise. I believe it just plays audio data in a buffer repeatedly at that moment.
It looks to me that it failed in decoding the video. Probably it can be due to mal-formated encoding, but after rebooting if I move the play position to the same spot, it plays there correctly. So, probably somehow when there is somewhat wrong encoded data filled in a buffer to decode but there is some non-allowed operation is processed. ( like divide-by-zero. I don't mean that this one is due to divide-by-zero. ) Can be somewhat related to DCT block....
Flash plugin installed on my Mac : The latest Flash plugins for Mac
Mac Mini with Intel HD graphics 3000. ( last year's model )
is this going to be fixed soon? Probably this is a bug which is already being traced?

I haven't seen this occur before.  We're going to need some additional info from you.  Please see this tech doc for some simple troubleshooting steps (in particular, try the HTML5 vs. Flash video tests and try disabling Flash Player's hardware acceleration).  The doc also explains what information we'll need and how you can report the issue to us.
Troubleshoot, report Flash Player video playback issues

• A possible cause for the Lion freezes: Spotlight indexing

Does your Mac freeze mysteriously after upgrading to Lion?
Mine had that problem, but after troubleshooting, I seem to have identified the culprit (at least for my MacBook) and, after deleting the offending file, I have since experienced no problem.  Here, I will share a case report with the hope that it will help others troubleshoot their computers experiencing the same problem.
The Problem: Mac (running Lion 10.7 or 10.7.1) freezes sometime after logging on.  The freeze begins by an inability to get a response to clicks.  The cursor is still active, but after a click or two the cursor turns into a spinning disc.  After some time, the clock stops updating on the menu bar.
Mine froze consistently after about 15-20 min after logging on.  It happened regardless of which application I was using, it froze even if I didn't do anything after logging on.  It required a reboot (control-command-power button on a MacBook) everytime.
Was Spotlight indexing active right before the freeze happened?  When Spotlight indexing is active, the magnifying glass icon on the upper right corner of your display will show a blinking dot.  Mine was.
A Possible Culprit: Spotlight may have encountered a corrupt file on the hard disk during indexing.
What you can do:
Before you do anything, it is recommended that you have backed up all your files.  Unfortunately, it is difficult to back up now because the Mac may freeze during the back up process.
1. Check the errors related to Spotlight by opening Console, which is an utility app that you can find in the Applications>Utilities folder.  Do you see error messages for "mdworkers"?  It does not always show up before the freeze, but this may indicate some problems during Spotlight indexing.
2. Confirm the problem by turning off Spotlight indexing.  You can do this in a number of ways, but I will list two ways below:
a) Go to System Preferences and click on Spotlight icon.  Under the Privacy tab, click on "+" icon and add the "Users" folder (or any particular folder that you may suspect).  The indexing will not happen to files in that folder.  Also, turn off Time Machine and disconnect back up disks, if you use any.  Apparently Spotlight indexes within the Time Machine backups.  OR
b) For experienced users: Open Terminal and type "sudo mdutil -i off" without the quotes.  (To turn it back on, type "sudo mdutil -i on /" without the quotes)
3. Try using your computer with Spotlight turned off.  Does it still freeze?  If it does not, you have confirmed that the problem is with Spotlight indexing.
4. Find the offending file that causes problem by turning Spotlight indexing back on...
a) Remove the folder by highlighting and clicking on "-" button under the Privacy tab.  OR
b) For experienced users: Type "sudo mdutil -i on /" without the quotes.
5. ...and then repeating steps 2a, 3, and 4a.  Try isolating different folders until you can narrow down the problem.  This process may take a while.
6. Once you narrowed down to a few folders, try QuickLook through the contents of the folder while the Console is open.  To use QuickLook, highlight a file in the Finder and hit a space bar on your keyboard.  It is helpful to set the Finder in a column view so you can use arrow keys to navigate through the folders.  Does Console show you an error when you QuickLook a file?  Can you double click and open that file?  If not, the file may be corrupt.  Trash that file and empty trash.
7. Now turn Spotlight indexing back on (step 4) and use your computer for a while.  Does it still freeze?  If so, repeat the process and find other corrupt files.
For me, it was a single corrupt image file in the Documents folder that caused the freezing problem.  I deleted it and the problem went away.  Since that file had been untouched for years, and I did not experience the same freezing problem in Snow Leopard, I suspect that Spotlight in Lion is somehow less permissive of corrupt files assuming that the file did not corrupt after the upgrade.
Steps 4-7 is cumbersome and it takes a long time to troubleshoot.  If you know of a faster way to identify corrupt files, please share in this thread.  Also, I think Spotlight should alert the users when it encounters a corrupt file and give us a choice to delete it on the spot.  Please join me by sending a feedback to Apple about this.

My G5, PPC, came with Tiger installed and ran great. I decided to upgrade to Leopard (not snow leopard) and at first it seemed to work well.
Here is where you should backup, reinitialize, and make sure you use retail 10.4 rather than any OEM DVD?
After several days I noticed I have Permission errors that Disk Utility would not fix. (The only way to repair this was to insert the install disk and run Disk Utility from there: which means you have to reimport/install all the OS updates over again)
Some real confusion. Permissions can and should be done while booted from your hard drive; never run from older version of OS X.
Not all permission messages are errors.
Bootable backups (clones).
Invest in 3rd party repair programs.
Eventually the OS was crashing and freezing so I went to a local Apple repair store to ask why. Apparently Leopard is unstable on some G5 towers.
No, not really.
But you do have to insure your hardware, your software, is also current.
I decided to reinstall Tiger and still had problems. After about 5 attempts at reinstalling the OS I realized I was using a disk from a G4 tower that my kids use, so I found the disk that come with my G5 and the install worked perfectly.
So it appears that not all OS install disks are the same:
No secret there. NEVER use an OEM disc except your own; or, use retail full install versions is all. I guess you never came across that bit.
Sorry you had to take so much time, but sounds like came away with some misconceptions.

• What's causing my mac to crash?

I'm running a Macbook Pro, 2008 model. For about a week, my mac has started to completely freeze up. I'm assuming that this is a crash. The only solution I have found is to hold down the power key for a few seconds until it shuts off. When the startup chime sounds, more often than not it will freeze again before the login screen apppears. Multiple reboots usually result in firing my machine back up.
The only change I can think of that I have made is installing the software and drivers for a Brother printer/scanner.
Also, this error code appeared upon restart, maybe this could help us figure this out.

Thanks! Let me give you some more information about what's going on.
I'm running Snow Leopard on a 2008 Macbook Pro, 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo.
For the last two weeks, my machine has been freezing up, with no particular cause that I can infer a pattern from. It will either completely freeze, and the cursor won't move at all, or it will move, but I can't click on anything or do a restart via the keyboard shortcut. The cursor does wierd things during this, such as verticle lines appearing in a square shape (this picure is turned sideways...sorry).
When it freezes up, I have to manually power off to restart. This usually leads to another problem: during the white screen with the Apple logo and the chime, the spinning cog will stop spinning after a few seconds, and it will freeze up indefinately. I have to turn off/on sometimes 10 or 15 times to get it to start up properly. When it does boot up, it runs fine, just like always, but sooner or later, it will crash again.
Here's what I've tried: Repairing disk permissions, running the hardware diagnostic with the osx disc (everything checked out ok), I've verified the disk (seems to be ok), and I've carefully monitored the temperature of the machine, which hasn't gone unusually high.
When the machine won't boot up, I've tried Safe Boot (doesn't work, still freezes) and resetting the PRAM (doesn't work).
Any ideas?

• What is causing my Mac to be so slow?

Ok so I have a 2011 Mac Mini, upgraded to 8gb of RAM running Mavericks. Over the past few months, it has been performing poorly during certain tasks, for example:
-When watching videos, both on and offline, picture will randomly freeze for a couple of seconds, while audio continues
-Every-day tasks such as right clicking to open the mini menu that appears or opening a folder in Finder (rainbow wheel appears)
-Loading a webpage - nothing will happen for a few seconds, then it connects and everything loads very quickly
So I backed up using Time Machine, and wiped the harddrive, reinstalled via USB installation (without restoring backup), and everything was super quick again. So I restored just my applications and files (ie. not my settings) in the hope my mac would maintain its new found speed.
It didn't.
In fact, it has regained exactly the same issues as last time. So my question is, what can I do to find out what is causing this slow down?
Thanks,
Max

Hi Linc,
Many thanks for your continued support, I am afraid the Mac is still as it was even after the OS X Yosemite Public Release Install. Here are the results for the new test I carried out as per your detailed instructions:

• What is causing my Mac to crash during the sleep mode?

Hello!
I would to have your help on this situation that i am having for a month or so...  Ok... it started about a month ago, I turned it on and all of the sudden, it shut down, then rebooted on its own... (actually it rebooted like 3 or 4 times before running the system) I thought that it was odd.  I had my Tech to look over and see what was causing to crash and all... he could not find anything then we all decided to leave it running all time... so we did.  a week or two later, it just crashed when i woke the sleep mode and it went on the usual route as crashed and rebooted two or three times before going back to normal.
sound familiar to you guys?  after that happened, we turned off the sleep mode and so far, it is doing good...  decided not to update the system's Security software because it may have something to cause the mac to crash down...
the mac is  2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 Gb 667 MHZ DDR2 FB-DIMM, running on 10.6.8
appreciate your help on this.

One more thing....  it makes weird sounds as well... very high pitch sounds that you hear in movies where UFO flying by while it is doing the rebooting...

• Loading the latest OS on my iPhone4 caused the phone to freeze. I get error message 4013 when trying to restore the phone. Any help will be appreciated

Loading the latest OS on my Iphone 4 caused the phone to freeze and stop working. I get error message 4013 when trying to restore the phone.

Did you already try these suggestions?
Check USB connections
Related errors: 13, 14, 1600-1629, 1643-1650, 2000-2009, 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, 4016, “invalid response,” and being prompted to restore again after a restore completes.
If there’s an issue with the USB port, cable, dock, or hub, or if the device becomes disconnected during restore, try troubleshooting the USB connection, then troubleshooting your security software.
To narrow down the issue, you can also change up your hardware:
Use another USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port on your computer.
Try a different dock connector (or no dock).
Add (or remove) a USB hub between your device and computer.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, with no routers, hubs, or switches.
If you checked your connections and are still seeing the error message, check for hardware issues.

• Whay am I having script errors with some of my websites only on Firefox, not other browsers, causing the computer to freeze for a bit at a time.

I keep getting "script" errors and my computer locking up while using Mozilla Firefox on some of my websites. I don't have this problem while using Internet Explorer. Why has this just started and how can I resolve this? I like Firefox, but will have to start using a different browser if this doesn't get resolved.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.
