I-Book battery causing freezes?

Yesterday my i-book started freezing up completely. I tried everything, and eventually re-enstalled OS X, but it still kept freezing. So on a totally random whim I removed my battery and am running just on wall power. So far it has not frozen up again for the last 8 or 9 hours at least. It would seem that the battery is my problem. So has anyone else had this issue, or at least heard of it?

Hi Zippo138,
Welcome to the Discussions.
Try resetting the PMU .

  • Can the battery cause freeze ups/ beach balls?

    Hello all,
Recently bought a newertech batt replacement that I saw referenced on here and at first all was good. After a day or so though the computer would lock up with browser open and not come back from sleep. The cursor would disappear.
I am wondering if the battery could cause this since it occurred occasionally after it went to sleep (Screensaver)? Perhaps I didn't calibrate the battery correctly?
I did a hardware test with the disk that comes with ibook and all parts passed including new hard drive, although disk permissions won't repair - gets stuck.
    thanks,
    Al

There may be some other hardware issues at play in
your computer; a new battery if properly calibrated
and the other aspects of the general system are good,
    the machine should work.
Have you tried starting the computer in SafeBoot,
then try Disk Utility's 'repair disk permissions'
and then restart normally? Also, if you can't get
'disk permissions' to work, boot from the installer
disc and use that Disk Utility; also 'repair disk.'
Have you used a widget to see if the battery specs
are in the good range, and if it is getting charged
when other indications say that it is? iStat is a good
one. Also Sys Profiler can tell you a thing or two.
A proper reset of the PMU may help, if the issue
is related to charging, power, battery life, etc.
A too full hard disk drive with inadequate free space
for the system to function, and inadequate space for
virtual memory, could cause freeze-ups hangs and
other issues. This would be more likely & critical.
Look into Activity Monitor and see how all things
    stack up. Free space vs full space; RAM vs demand;
virtual memory, CPU use, network activity, etc.
You replaced the hard disk drive? Damaged a cable?
Could be if there are read-write errors, the ATA
controller chip on the logicboard may be suspect.
    Preventative maintenance and general housekeeping
are like troubleshooting in advance; since you know
the last time several recommended things were done.
How many places did you ask the same questions, btw?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Windows recognizes iPod, but not iTunes or iPod updater, causes freezing

I'm having some issues with my 60GB iPod Photo. I tried to store my friend's music on my iPod as files. Upon uploading them to my own computer, some files caused freezing, requiring me to disconnect and reconnect the iPod. I finally gave up and deleted all the files stored on my iPod. All of a sudden, although Windows XP Pro recognized that an iPod was plugged in, it would no longer open iTunes automatically. When opening iTunes once the iPod was plugged in, it would cause iTunes to freeze.
I decided to restore my iPod. About halfway through, there was an error message saying my iPod could not be restored. All songs were deleted but my iPod was still not recognized. Now, the iPod updater does not recognize that in iPod is connected, even though Windows does. The updater freezes, inhibiting me from completing my restore. iTunes freezes as well when my iPod is plugged in. My iPod displays "update in progress - do not disconnect," but nothing happens. When my iPod is not connected to the computer, I can navigate through it normally, although it does need to be unfrozen when left unused for a couple of days. I cannot tell if it plays files because they were all removed during my unsuccessful restore.
I have tried reinstalling all my iPod related software and I have tried my iPod on more than one computer with different USB cables, but nothing works.
    Help, please!

This is exactly the same problem that I am having I have posted on 14th March on itunes forum. I wish you luck I wait with interest to see what someone says. My ipod was working like a dream until i downloaded the update

    My macbook air is os x 10.9, using iPhoto 11 9.5 (902.7).

Try Old Toad's solution here:   See   Re: iphoto : upload impossible to print a book
Try to boot into Safe Mode and order this way, or sign into a different user account and try to order as a different user.

  • To All: Yes, Yes, the battery causes the trackpad to go haywire.

I've had my MacBook Pro for 5 yrs & have left it plugged into power while in use with the battery in.
I've used it ~ 8-10 hrs daily this way for the last 2 yrs without unplugging it at night, I just put it to sleep.
Thought it might have been an altitude problem but I came from Florida to Colorado last yr w/out problems.
I now believe that constant use w/ battery in & plugged into power 24/7 for the last 2 yrs didn't help.
It would get hot, the fan would go on & I'd elevate the back to help circulation.
But it is 5 years old, a longevity for a battery I hear. I must say a swollen battery causes the trackpad to go haywire.

Not at an Apple Store, and if the iPhone is no longer under warranty, there is a cost.

  • My 5 months Mac book battery go down soon. The battery should keep at least 8 hours. It became bad.

My new 5 months Mac Book battery go down really soon. The new battery should keep at least 8 hours. I don't know what happen to my new battery. Is there anyone have same problem as me? Please help me to solve this issue. I did still have the warranty. Just want to know if i have use my Mac book at right way. Thanks!

Have an Apple Store or an Apple Service Provider evaluate it since you still have a warranty. Once in a while a bad component will show up. Also consider getting Apple Care to extend the warranty to 3 years after purchase. You will never be sorry if you do this. Good Luck.

  • I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.

I just recently installed mountain lion and an update for SMC firmware to install power nap. Everything is working except for the menu bar, the icons native to the system do not respond, and features like the clock and battery meter freeze.
When I mouse over the icons, the rainbow appears as if it was processing something. The problem is eliminated when I restart my computer but it comes back after a while.
I guess I cant make a backup copy and restore the whole disk because the copy would be made with this error.
Can anyone help me? Anyone with the same issue?

Update: I was able to test out the HDMI adapter as well and the same issue occured.  I'm stumped.  10.8.1 maybe.

  • Supplied memory card causing freezing???

    Hi all,
Right i've had my E72 since oct 10 and during that time i've had a few accounts of freezing when ending applications etc but nothing major. Also i was having the access point menu randomly flashing up. I noticed these issues more (the access point menu entirley) after i updated the software. I was also noticing the keypad not lighting up everytime i used it, it would come on half way through a text.
I took the phone to my local express repair center where they simply hard reset the phone although im not sure if they did anything to the keypad/light sensor. Since getting the phone back its freezing worse than before and the keypad seems to be no better. Through looking on here i've found that memory cards can cause freezing and i've recently swapped my old samsung one for the one supplied with the phone. I also didn't realise about the light sensor (dumb*** ) but the keypad has been unlit in the dark before!
Are the supplied memory cards just bad or is it the handset and has anyone else had issues with there keypad light?
    Many Thanks

I have an E73 and no issues with the light sensor...I think.  Concerning the supplied memory card, have you tried reformatting it?  I recently had a problem with one of my purchased 8 GB cards slowing down.  I use the cards for file storage only: pictures, music, podcasts, etc.  Saving or deleting files on the card took a very long time, and the application appeared to lock up for roughly 20 (?) seconds with no progress bar.  Examining the card with a program like Windows' chkdsk revealed several errors on that chkdsk ultimately couldn't fix.  So I backed up all the data, reformatted the card, copied the data back, and it's been working perfectly since.  Just like hard drives and other storage, memory cards can fail, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're beyond saving.
On the other hand, I'm sure you've seen threads here about faulty phones.  If the phone itself can fail, then the memory card can, too.  You never know.   Hope that helps.

  • Safari 6 causing freeze to OSX

Since i upgraded to Mountain Lion and Safari got upgraded too to 6, I started getting this issue especially when i play flash games on facebook or watching a video on youtube, i guess it's related to flash player i don't know. It starts ok and starts the flash content normally but 5 minutes later it freezes and causes freeze to the whole system i can't do anything unless i hit option+command+esc to force quite safari, once i shut it down the system starts working normally like charm! .. I have 2011 15" macbook pro.
I made some reserch on the internet about this issue and all i found is just "reset safari" and deleting some extensions or stuff and that never worked for me!
I check for any updates for flash player or safari almost everyday hoping to get rid of this problem.
btw, I'm using Firefox and it works normally with flash contents and youtube.

Uninstall the currently installed Flash plugin (required for both YouTube and Facebook) then reinstall new.
Uninstall >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Very important to uninstall the old plugin first.
    Then reinstall new >  http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?promoid=JZEFT
Then open System Preferences > Flash Player then select the Advanced tab.
    Click: Delete All
    Quit and relaunch Safari.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Select:  Clear History  (also empties the cache)
Deselect the remaining boxes then click Reset.
    Try a video.

The battery compartment on the under-side of my MacBook has swollen/expanded so it does not close tight, though still ust about closes.
Does anyone know what might cause this?

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

Ive had my new imac 5 days been creating a book all week, Was asked to create a new one for a family member but could not create a new book i can create a card or calender just not a book.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Relaunch the application and test. If there's no change, quit again and put the item you moved back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Otherwise, delete the item you moved. If possible, restore it from a backup that predates the problem.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Exactly what model MacBook Pro do you have?
Many MBP's have two graphic processors (gpu's) and if you are using the dedicated graphics processor, your MBP will heat up a lot  more than when the built-in graphics processor is in use.   For example, the current non-Retina MBP's have both a built-in Intel HD 4000 graphics processor and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M graphics processor.
You can control which video processor is in use via System Preferences > Energy Saver.  If you are running Lion (10.7) there is an option for Automatic Graphics Switching which you should turn off (disable) in order to use only the built-in video processor.  In my own experience I have found very few cases where the dedicated gpu gives 'better' performance than the built-in gpu.

  • Works with Battery but freezes with AC

I replaced the RAM two weeks ago (1G->2G) and ever since my 17" PB has gone to the dogs. First I had random system crashes. The computer would freeze and a message would appear telling me to shut down the computer.
I thought bad RAM. I replaced them again...
Now I have a new problem.
The laptop freezes whenever I plug in the AC. Works with the battery OK. The AC will charge the battery if the computer is turned off but I can't have the computer on and the AC plugged in at the same time. It freezes instantly. No error message. I zapped the PRAM and reset the PMU but nothing changed.
I already ordered a new Macbook but obviously I don't want to throw the PB in the garbage. It has worked flawlessly for the past 3.5 years.

Have you put the original Samsung memory back in to see if these symptoms still occur? Powerbooks are sensitive to the quality of memory used, due in part to it's use of memory bus slewing, where the power to the memory bus is throttled based on systems needs, which reduces battery usage and heat.
Memory can meet the Apple specs and cause problems like kernel panics and other issues. I would put the Samsung memory back in, and if everything works, then the replacement memory isn't suitable. In addition to Samsung, Crucial and Kingston (not their value ram, however) are two other brands that work reliably. Recent posts say that PNY memory has worked too (you can scan the discussions for other brands that have also worked).
If you go with Crucial or Kingston, use the memory selectors on their web sites to determine which of their memory will work. Samsung I usually look to OWC at http://www.macsales.com,

  • Power Book battery

Did anyone experience the heat generated by the Mac book Pro when its being connected to the power source? ...Is that normal? , further the battery does not get charged properly I think as the back up is hardly 45 Min..Please help me..

    Hi Sunny65,
If you're running the machine with extensive CPU/GPU load while the unit is charging there's going to be some excessive heat. I've noticed that if I try to charge my MacBook Pro while I'm playing a game it gets hotter than normal and the power brick gets very hot (also more than usual). I've come to expect this as normal as the combination of energy depletion and recharge is probably causing the warmer than usual sensation.
Are you noticing the unit running hotter than normal even when idle and just connected off power? Is the battery charging during this time?
I've also seen situations where an older battery that's depleted will cause the unit to run much hotter than normal when it's connected to power. The battery cells are not absorbing the energy from the charge and as a result is transferred into heat for dissipation purposes.
What's your battery health information? Apple Logo > About This Mac > More Info > Click Power on the left hand column
Copy and paste the battery information.
