I book G4 power cord

Can I use a power cord from a Powerbook G4 on my Ibook G4? My charger is not working properly and I don't know if the problem is the cord or the plug in the computer. I want to try a different cord before I go out and buy one.

Hey lin,
Yup those power adapters are identical afa the power jacks are concerned. The only difference is the Wattage ratings. I generally just swap them back and forth. Have around 6 of them around here for the various PowerBook and iBook G4s I'm working on and just use which ever one is handy.

  • I Book/ Powerbook Power cords

Sunday night, my power cord sizzled/fizzed and smoked.
It was dead. And a hazard.
I searched everywhere, online, all 5 apple stores in my state... everyone was SOLD OUT.
Then I looked on these discussion boards and I realized that since I had extended my applecare (WOOHOO) it was still covered. So I called and spoke with a wonderful tech and he assured me 3-4 business days.
Luckily, a friend of mine had an extra cord... so I took it home last night and waited for my replacement to come in the mail.
    Wouldn't you know it.
It came today. Not even 24 hours later.
    Applecare is so worth it.
    Seriously.

I couldn't agree more. I'll never own a portable without Applecare!
Glad to hear your problem was solved so quickly.

  • I book doesnt work with power cord only

Hello. I was just using my ibook g4 and shut it down. When i tried to turn it back on it worked for about 5 minutes then it shut off. I tried taking out the battery and holding down the power button for 5 seconds among other things. I gave up and borrowed a friends battery, he has the same model as me and that battery doesnt work either. I tried just using the power cord only and that doesnt work either. Do i need to take it in to a professional? I've tried just about everything.

Hey Caesar and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
    So your header reads:
"i book doesnt work with power cord only "
Is that right? Will it run only on the battery?
If so this is from the manual:
"The computer runs with battery, but not with the power adapter plugged into
    wall outlet
    1. Try known-good power outlet.
    2. Try known-good power adapter and power cord.
    Note:
Verify that power adapter connector glows amber or green. If the power
adapter light is green, turn over the computer and press the battery button. The
battery lights should glow green and stay on if the power adapter is operating
    correctly.
    3. Reset the power manager by pressing the key combination Control-Option-Shiftpower.
Warning: Make sure you do not hold down the "fn" key when resetting the
    power manager.
Warning: Resetting the power manager means you will also need to reset the
date and time (using the Date & Time control panel).
    4. Replace DC board.
    5. Replace logic board."
and it would help to know exactly which iBook you have but this is pretty generic.

  • What is the necessity of the AC power cord (with Mac Book Air)? When should it be used with the power adapter?

what is the necessity of the AC power cord (with the Mac book Air)? when should it be used?

Gary, you wouldn't believe some of the questions people ask on this site.
    Why are both cords necessary?
    They are not.
Other than the two reasons dominic23 sited are there any other reasons to use the AC power cord rather than the power adapter cord alone?
    No.

  • Will AIR ac power cord work for Mac Book Pro?

will AIR ac power cord work for Mac Book Pro? I've lost my MBP cord.

No. It does not provide sufficient power for a MBP unless you have a 13" model that uses a 60 watt adaptor.

  • Why does my mac book pro screen go black when it goes to sleep and then will not light up again unless I unplug the power cord

When I either leave my mac book pro open, but idle long enough for it to go to sleep or close the top and put it to sleep, the only way to light up the screen again is to diconnect the mag. connect power cord. Any ideas why and/or how to  correct this problem?

So this is what I got when I took my computer into the apple store to have it diagnosed.
After the apple technician performced several tests, the only thing that fixed the issue was an SMC reset. Based on this he figures it is probably a software or firmware issue that is going on. He is a little concerend how ever that the fans of the comupter don't reach maximal rpm when the computer is displaying the issue. So he recorded the problem, and told me to just perform the SMC reset as needed for the next couple months and wait for a new update from apple. If the issue persists I am to go back to the apple store and they will take the appropriate steps.
He said an SMC reset doesn't hurt the computer in any way, so its safe to do. I am gonna contact blizzard and let them know about the issue as well because if it is software, it could be their game (Diablo 3) that is causing the issue as well. If I hear of anything new i will let you know. So get on the blizzard form and let them know of the issue to fix the problem faster.
    Thanks for your help,

My power cord is not lighting up or charging my macbook air

      1. Try another power outlet.
      2. Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
       Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

  • Power cord for Mac Book question...need some help

Hi...my Mom gave my niece her MacBook but kept the power cord. I bought one on eBay for her and it was a 60W MagSafe cord. She seems to be having power issues where it goes into rest mode while working on it and then takes a day or so to recover. Apple store checked it clean and installed Snow Leapord. Is it possible that she needs an 80W cable..I am not sure of the power requirements. Thanks

Have you tried a known-good Apple adapter with the machine?
I'd replace the adapter with one from Apple and see if the troubles persist.

  • MBP random shutdown even with power cord plugged in

My MacBook Pro (original) has now randomly shut down 5 times since I installed 10.5.6 the week before Christmas. 4 of those 5 times happened with the power cord plugged in, the green indicator light on and the installed battery fully charged. I have two batteries and it has happened with each of them at least twice. Yesterday I got my first shutdown while on battery only. After each shutdown I was able to restart the computer and it operated normally, even the one on battery only.
These shutdowns are fast and complete. There is no warning of any kind. The screen just goes blank. It is not sleeping, there is no pulsing light on the front. Using the start key begins the process from scratch with the Apple "startup chime."
The occurrences have gotten more frequent. The first two were within 24 hours of when I installed 10.5.6 and they happened within several hours of each other. Both of these were with the power cord attached and fully charged batteries. I swapped the battery after the first one. When it happened again, I swapped them again.
The next time I had the problem was 1/30 (last Friday). The only significant software installation I had done between installing 10.5.6 and then was to install iLife '09 on 1/28. All software updates had been installed in a timely manner. Friday the laptop was plugged into external power and the battery was fully charged, but I don't know which battery was installed.
2/1 I had an issue where my computer couldn't locate the OS file on startup so I did a archive and install. It operated normally since then until yesterday, 2/4 when I had two shutdowns. The first I had the computer on external power and a fully charged battery. The second was the ONLY time I have had the shutdown occur while on battery power only. I was on a flight when the second shutdown occurred. I had used all the power in the battery that was installed when the first shutdown happened (down to about 11 minutes remaining). I then swapped batteries without shutting the computer down. The system rebuilt itself normally and I began working on iPhoto. About an hour later it just shutdown. I was able to restart the computer normally and used it for another 45 minutes or so before I shut it down for landing.
I called Apple Care this morning and they advised me to get an appointment with a Genius. I resist being without my laptop but will try this and let them look over the console log to see if they can find anything.
I have done all the basics, reset the PMU, zapped the PRAM and repaired disk permissions. The next thing I am going to do is to calibrate both batteries. I doubt this will have any impact on the issue because most of the shutdowns have occurred with external power connected. I just haven't done this in a while.
Any ideas out there? Anyone have a similar problem?
I have another issue on my Mac Pro since installing 10.5.6 and my wife's iMac G5 has a completely different issue since installing 10.5 (I didn't install this OS until last week so I could get the new iLife on it). Seems like this latest OS version is a bit buggy or at least incompatible with a lot of Apple's products in different ways.
    Fight On!

    UPDATE:
Service was due and now that I saw the machine fail 4 times in a day doing the same process I knew I could duplicate the issue on demand. That's a big bonus.
Called Apple Care yesterday morning and the guy I spoke with read over the notes on my case after I told him what happened the day before (black friday, 4 shutdowns). While he didn't transfer me to a Product Specialist, he did talk to one for quite a while (I was on hold for about 20 minutes while he did this). He said I could ship it to Apple and they would look at it or I could take it to an Apple Store or Authorized Service Center. Thinking this was the next step I had secured a time at the Carlsbad Apple Store for late that afternoon (my usual & closest store, Escondido, was booked all weekend). They told me to take it in and reference the case number. The Product Specialist thought it sounded like a logic board and would duly note that diagnosis in the case history.
After the conversation ended I decided to make sure I could cause the failure. So I started the process (threw out the face.db from the iPhoto Library package and opened iPhoto whereupon iPhoto begins a scan of the images for faces. Having over 12,000 images gives it a lot of work). This time I decided to monitor the workings of the laptop using iStat Pro (freeware widget download & I recommend making a small donation it's so good). I kept track of the processes at 5 minute intervals, the CPU usage, numerous temps AND the fan speed. The latter seemed to be the critical. Shortly after the fan speed got to 4700 the shutdown occurred. It took 36 minutes from the time I started. The fans kind of confirm to me that it could be the logic board.
I took the laptop to the Apple Store and started the process in front of the "Genius." He read through the case as well as the printed copy of this thread and other notes I brought from previous shutdowns including the data I mined from iStat Pro. He was unimpressed and thought it was a non-issue. I guess that's only fair because I was unimpressed with him. He figures it's my system because of a software conflict somewhere. His answer was to do a clean install and reinstall all the software from the original disks. I told him I have spent over 50 hours on this issue to date and that what he was suggesting would take at least that much and guarantee nothing if it's a database issue...duh! Disagreement. Oh, and he also doubted it would fail just from making it work.
43 minutes after starting the process, well after my "Genius" went home for the day (I was his last appointment), the failure occurred. The "Genius" he handed me off to was working with someone else next to where I was sitting. When the fans hit 4700 rpm I told her it was going to happen soon and as I finished my sentence the failure occurred! Cool.
They have the machine and I'll let you know what they do.

  • Crashing mac. power cord?

I've heard of laptops and macs etc. battery dying and will not power without power cord in, however my mac seems to keep crashing if power cord is in and gets knocked or taken out, however left for about 30seconds off will power up again without power cord in... but power cord will then not work until i've unplugged from the wall, fiddled around with it for a bit... after about 5 mins the power cord will work again.
This happens every time the cord is knocked or taken out. Also, after crashing the macbook will then ask me to confirm "incoming connections" .. after googling what ones they were they were things from my microsoft office package and mail and nothing suspicious. Clock will also go to 00:00 1/1/ etc, but if i click on the date& time preferenes it sorts itself out and goes back to normal date and time.
Itunes also restarts and needs me to confirm... not sure about other programmes yet.. but no files or data has been lost.
    Just everything resets?
Wondering if anyone else has heard of this? If anyone might know if it's the power cord tripping out and somehow glitching the macbook?
I don't have any issues with my battery draining abnormally, and once the power cord is up and running and plugged in, it's charging fine. Just a bit confused. I've never heard or experienced anything like this before!
I live with my laptop for my uni stuff so any info would be great!
    Thanks, Georgie
Ps. I have a express lane phone appointment booked for friday, but just wondered if anyone had any information in the mean time.

Hi...it sounds like I've been having similar problems as well. This has happened when I tried resetting the SMC twice and the PRAM.. it has done it twice since then after fiddling around with the adapter. It's like it goes to sleep by itself right and then you awake it and then it shuts down? When I restart it I'm having to press the power button lots of times to get it to start and then it tells me to accept stuff and reset the clock. Same symptoms you are having? If you find out what the problem is, and if I'm able to fix this too myself...I'd like it if you post back here! I'm also having problems with the battery showing "Not Charging" on the indicator and having the adapter light a steady green, which I am going to have to get it looked into as well. Thanks!!!

  • Is my power cord bad

I used my laptop this morning and forgot to plug in the power cord. The laptop got to critical power so I shut it off. Plugged in the power cord in many outlets and no green light. MacPro Book 2009(5 months old) will not power up assuming its dead. Mac tech told me the power cords can die sometimes in a month. Anyone else have this problem? I have appointment with Mac Genius in 2 days.

  • Power cord for I Mac

    Hi!
Where can I find power cord for new I Mac? I have US power cord, but I need one to use in UK. On apple store You can find travel kit for mac book, but for I mac is hard to find anything like that.

Unfortunately, They're not an officially purchasable object from Apple, although any ole "Kettle Cable" as they're known, will work for your iMac. You could try asking at an Apple store. They may have a spare they can give you.

  • Power Cords and a Bunch of MacBooks

We have three recent Mac Books and one MacBook Pro in the family. The power cords can often be found in various places so invariably someone will sit with their computer and mindlessly just plug in. I'm not too worried about the Mac Books, but how 'bout the MBPro power cord on the other machines or vice versa?

Its ok to mix and match them.
The only "problem" is that some of the MacBook Pro's use 85 Watt chargers where as the others use 60 Watts.
If you a plug an 85 Watt charger into a computer only needing 60 Watts, its ok. In fact it will be better because it will just "under clock" itself and won't get as hot.
However, if you plug a 60 Watt charger into a MacBook Pro that requires 85 Watts, thats where you might have problems. The most common is that the computer will not charge he battery. Instead, it will be running off the AC adapter (from 60 watts) AND using power from the battery! (the other remaining power needed: max 85-60 watts) If you put the computer to sleep or shut it down, the battery WILL charge, but a much slower rate.
So other the the exception above, you will be fine and there are no issues of swapping the cords around. Its not like something is going to blow up or catch fire if you plug the wrong charger into the wrong computer.
