I-book g4 won't restart

I recently upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 and when I start my computer I get a screen that says I need to restart my computer in several different languages, and when I try to restart I get the same screen. I ran the repair disk and it shows the logic board, memory, etc. OK. All I get when I try to restart is a gray screen w/Apple logo and then the msg to restart. Has anyone ran across this problem?

Had the same exact problem tonight. First time in a long time, shut the computer down, then about 1/2 hour later had to restart. All I got was the hated multi-lingual msg telling me to "restart or reset" or some such.
Put the Applecare CD in after much figuring how to get the drive to eat the CD, and then the cursor wouldn't work, though I could run some diagnostics with the return key.
More pain/angst trying to figure out how to remove the damned CD, then tried the Install Disc 1 routine. Did the "C" on start thing and got a messsage: "2mem/1/4: dimmo/built-in" which made just tons of sense to me and is perfectly logical what the problem is/was. Now getting somewhere, disc First Aid to repair but found nothing. But while I was there I did the permissions thing (many permissions fixes) and the other one, can't remember what it was, but nothing changed.
Decided since it's new years eve and applecare folks are out running naked through orchards I had nothing to lose by attempting an archive and reinstall. So did that routine, took a little while but no other choice but to let it do its thing, and here it is, back running.
Couple little strange deals, pix on the login windows disappeared, and icons for websites are gone, but seems to be running enough to post here.
Looking forward to someone who knows what they're talking about to tell us what happened...kernel panic sounds like something that happens at a drive in or cheap movie theater.

I have a 2010 Mac Book Pro with a known issue of GPU Panics, especially following Mavericks installation.
Have been limping along with band aid solutions until I can get a new computer, but today, following a panic, the laptop won't restart.
I press the start button, get the usual startup sound, get gray screen with Apple logo, gray spinning pinwheel for about 2 minutes, and the screen goes totally black. Machine still seems to be on, makes quiet noise.
Any ideas on how I can get it to restart?

since you currently have Mavericks installed, you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it reach the login screen now? (Your screen going totally black is probably due to the GPU problem.)

Go into the App Store, tap Updates, and at the top should appear Purchases. Hit the tab that says "Not on this iPhone" to download again

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. Neo2 Platinum won't restart in WinXP

I recently RMA'd a Neo2 Platinum board because the SATA3/4 ports were not being detected during the Windows XP Pro setup. I received the board yesterday and the ports are now detected properly but I've encountered another perturbing problem. I've discovered that the computer won't restart via software. What I mean is after the NTFS format of the hard drive in Windows setup the computer is supposed to reboot on its own to proceed with the installation of the OS but in my case I have to physically press the restart button on my machine to continue with the install. Windows XP will fully install on the hard drive however the operating system can only turn off the PC, it won't restart it. It merely hangs.
I've tried reposition memory sticks, use a different IDE cable, another power supply, clearing the CMOS via the jumper, reverse updating the BIOS twice, and using the safe defaults in the BIOS but nothing has worked. This isn't the first time I've put a computer together and I've built quite a few but this is one abnormality I've never before encountered. I just hope this board doesn't have to be RMA'd yet again.

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

Like what happens? Is it just spinning?
If you've waited sufficiently long (say 10 minutes) you could just hit the power button which will do the trick. A little more gentle would be to open a terminal window (if you can) and type 'sudo reboot' (without the quotes) and enter your password when it asks. That will do it too.

About the only thing you can try is using the Online Internet Recovery system to reinstall Lion on your Mac over the top of the current install. that will reset all system files and should not touch your personal files or the apps you have installed.
Or iof you have a recent Time Machine backup use that to restore your Mac to that point in time.
