I book hard disk retrieval

my hard disk totally crashed recently and the service centre could not retrieve my files. i read somewhere in the internet that there is a company that can retrieve datas even from disks that had been submerged in water or burned in fire. somehow, i could not find that site anymore.
i would appreciate anybody who can point me to that link or provide advice on other alternative means of being able to recover my data.

Mac book: hard disk drive: replacement upgrade options

Ive done my reading. Now i would like to know if anyone has had very negative or postive experiences replacing MACBOOK HDs. im interested in the difference in RPMs:54oo vs 72oo. and also the difference in brands. it seems seagate has made a good name for its products, but im also looking at hitachi and western digital. and maybe there is a different company that i dont know about. any experiential knowledge on this topic would be much appreciated.

i have upgraded my factory hd to a seagate momentus 7200 rpm 160GB HD. I would like to use my factory Toshiba 80GB HD as an external HD. from what i can tell i need to get a 2.5" SATA firewire HD enclosure. any suggestions on what kind to get? or where to get it from?
i have only found a couple enclosure that seem to meet these requirements. one at owc and another somewhere else.
but i have read in the forums that people have bought "cheap" enclosures to make their internal hd's external hd's.
i havent found these yet.

Retrieve data from a Hard Disk That was connected to the optical Drive of Mac Book pro

I have been using a Mac Book pro from 2011 (Early 2011 Model), In the mid of 2012 I have planned to upgrade, and bought a 240 GB SSD and 16 GB ram from OWC, Installed successfully and bought another 750 GB WD Sata Disk and connected it to the Optical Drive Bay of the Laptop, using the optical drive as an external device now
I was using the SSD as the main disk for all the applications and OS itself, and tranferred all the user library (iTunes Library, iPhoto Library, Documents etc..) to the additinal 750 SATA Disk,
Last week the Mag Safe cable has been worn out and seperated completely from the adapter, I tried soldering the cable again and it was working for two days, third day The machine stopped charging and it was working until the battery run out of charge,
Now I have bought a new Mag Safe Charger for 108 Singapore Dollars and it wont charge, read in iFixit Forums to change the Mag Safe DC in Board, so found a new part in singapore and replaced DC in Board myself, after doing this when I connected the new mag safe adapter, it fired the cpu fan for two second, I was able to see the green light the adapter and it stopped again and the green light wont lit up now
Removed the logic board from Laptop completely and tried connecting the Mag Safe Adapter I can see the green light,
So with all the above details, Iam confused whether its the Logic Board or the Battery that is giving me issue, I can find out the problem by contacting a Authorised service centre, but Iam thinking whether its is worth to repair it or buy a New Mac Book Pro ?, Because if I need to change the logic Board need to spend 900 Dollars + 100 dollar service charge
So I was trying to remove the 750 GB WD Sata Disk to see if I can get the data back so I can buy a new Laptop without worrying,
The real issue now is when I connect the 750 WD Disk using a sata to usb converter cable to my official macbook, it says the connected USB device is drawing more power than expected and it wont even detect the hard disk, Iam wondering why it cannot detect the hard disk even in the disk utility, is there any way to get the data back from the 750 GB WD Sata disk (which was connected to the Optical Drive Bay)

Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds as if your disk was not correctly formatted to work with the Mac operating system. I suspect it was formatted in FAT32, which is primarily a Windows format. This type of format will not allow the disk to accept any files larger than 4GB. That's probably why you are seeing the crashes.
Connect the drive to your Mac and open Applications > Utilities > Airport Utility.
Click your disk on the left and click the erase tab on the right. You need to format the drive in +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Formatting will erase everything on the disk.
Then you could try the drive again attached to your AirPort Extreme to see if that will do what you want.

I tried to copy my files but i could not access them because of the filevault encryption. 110gb of hd space appears as used which means that my files are still in the drive. According to your post, you're using Leopard, so FileVault only encrypts your user folder (unlike Lion). On the mounted external drive, in your user folder, you should see a file called username.sparsebundle, with username being your user name. Double-click that file to open it and it should prompt you for a password. Type in your password and the file will mount as a volume in Finder. You should be able to copy all of your files over.

I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory . Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely. I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

For music production, you'll probably want a 7200RPM drive, and all the current 1TB units are 5200 or 5400RPM. Consider the 750GB 7200RPM Seagate:

MacBook hard disk failure - nothing retrievable

My MacBook fell off a guitar amp the weekend before last. It carried on working for the rest of the day without any problem, but after I shut it down, I was unable to boot it up again the following morning. It couldn't get beyond the grey screen and spinning wheel.
I took it to a Mac reseller/repairer who, after keeping it four days, reported that the hard disk was dead and because it was a mechanical failure, nothing was retrievable.
I've come home with a new hard disk fitted, but could really have done with retrieving some of my files from the old hard disk.

You could put the bad drive in an external enclosure and then download Data Rescue II and see it it can find files to retrieve. If it can, then buy it for $95 (I think) and maybe you will retrieve everything you need. It worked for me on a drive that was otherwise un touchable.
The way I look at it is this; you will not be out a dime to try this procedure. The reason I say so, even though you have to buy an external enclosure, is that if you had already owned an external enclosure with a drive in it you would not have be in this predicament. You could have used it for an ongoing backup of your regular drive. So, if you were to buy one now, and also buy a good drive to put in it, you won't have this problem again. Otherwise you will likely experience it again some day as most people do experience a HD failure at some point,

On your friend's computer with an internet connection, log into the Mac App Store with your ID and download Yosemite from the Purchases section of the Mac App Store. The make a bootable USB install media using

Firstly, what is the source of the 10.6.4 disc? Is it the original installation disc for your MacBook, or one 'borrowed' from another computer?
It isn't the retail version, because that's 10.6.3.
Assuming it's the correct disc (i.e. the one that shipped with your Mac), you need to boot from it again.
OK the language page.
From the installer screen, ignore the continue button, go to the menu bar and choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
In DU, select your internal drive in the sidebar (the top item with the makers name and serial no.).
Run Repair Disk. If that comes up as disk OK, click the partition tab. Select the partiton from the drop-down above the graphic; 1 partiton is all you need.
Go to the options button and ensure that the partition scheme is GUID and the file system to Mac OS Extended (Journalled). Name the partiton (usually Macintosh HD), click Apply.
When the Macintosh HD volume appears below the drive name, quit DU and see if you can then install.
If the screen after the language screen doesn't show the menu bar, it may be necessary to use another Mac to do the job with the MB in Firewire Target Disc Mode. If it won't boot in TDM, or the MB doesn't have FireWire then it's getting very difficult.

I will never know if the problem was one of transfer or format compatibility. The movie would not copy from one external hard diask to another, both attached to my MAC. But when the movie (which was in mpg by the way) was downloaded directly (without any other intermediary) into my external disk from the computer (a PC) where the movie was originated, the file did copy. And when I attached that external hard disk to my MAC, i could see it using the MPEC streamclip app.
