I bought a brand new mac after Apple said I had ruined my MBP with water damage- but now it works fine?

I'm a little bit confused here. I bought the latest Macbook Pro before university late September 2011, and unfortunately had a little accident involving a leaky bottle of juice.
I dried it out as much as I could, and took it to my nearest Apple store two days later, where, to my dismay the guys at the Genius bar said it was broken beyond a reasonably priced repair. I was faced with an estimated £800+ bill, or the option to buy a new one.
As I was going back to Uni for my last term, I needed a computer of some kind and hastily bought the new one. Instead of having it repaired, I stretched an extra £100 on the repair bill and bought the Macbook Air.
The guy who served me thought it was a good idea for me to buy a new one (obviously) and kept reminding me that even if I do get it repaired, the 'corrosion' could spread and it might need repairing again.
The problem throughout all of this is after spending ANOTHER £1000 only a few months after buying the first macbook, I am typing on the so called 'water damaged' macbook right now.
They told me it was completely busted, but apart from cosmetic water marks on the screen I am failing to see what's wrong with it.
Have I been ripped off? Can I sell the water damaged MBP?
I hope someone can help me!
Alexandra

As far as selling it, I don't know what you would get for it.  I know in my opinion if I was going to buy it and it worked, if it didn't look really bad, I MIGHT buy it, but that would really mean taking a look at it and seeing what is in store and what kind of condition it is in at the moment.  The thing with liquid, it does weird stuff when mixed with electronics.  I once had a portable gaming system that I spilled some pop on.  It didn't work right away because everything was still wet and liquid and electronics don't mix well.  However, after letting it dry off, it worked great.  Only problem I had with it at that point were the buttons started to stick.  And when they stuck, they would cause me to screw up my games sometimes becuase when I would go to push the buttons, they wouldn't go down right away and would be delayed and with games, that is the problem.  When you needed the button pressed now it wouldn't go right away.  This is not necessarily a problem with the computer say if you were typing or anything, but the point being, it may not show serious signs right now, but that doesn't mean that later it isn't going to.  However, as stated above, you might be able to get something for it as there are other parts worth value.  Maybe not the full computer, but pieces to part out if someone else were to find one that needed parts because there were parts of theirs that went bad and needed replaced.  I think if you were to fully disclose what happened and let them know that there could be something still going on with it that may cause a problem down the line, you might find someone who wants to try out a mac before making that purchase of $1000 to buy a new one.  I would try to sell it, worst thing that happens is you don't sell it because nobody wants it, but if that is the case you are no different then you are now.

Updates come through Software Update not the App Store. If you have to reinstall Lion that is done via Internet Recovery.
OS X Lion- About Lion Recovery
OS X Lion- Run Software Update to use Lion Internet Recovery
Lion maintenance and recovery operate via the Recovery HD. It's possible to create a separate recovery disk on a flash drive using OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant.
To boot into the Recovery HD:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

I bought a brand new Mac 27" desktop that came loaded with Adobe CS6. Everything worked like a charm until the hard drive, 1Tb, developed a bad sector and the Apple Store reinstalled a new one as I had extended warranty with them. They recycled the drive immediately (like a fool I didn't ask for it back to get the data off it.) But luckily I have all my data on CrashPlan. I downloaded it and it worked great except I downloaded it to the desktop and not the original location so it got squirrely. I also have an external 1.5Tb drive that I wanted to make bootable so I installed Mavericks 10.9.3 . I then went ahead and installed it on the newly installed drive too.
I think that because I have a new drive Adobe thinks I have a news computer. I bought the 27" Mac brand new from Ebay and it came loaded with software, including CS6. I have a serial number for CS6 but Adobe said it wasn't valid. (I have owned CS2, CS4 and now CS6 which came preloaded onto the Mac by the seller who told me that the software was registered to the Mac???
I am going to re-download the backup but this time to the original location (I still don't think it will work with Adobe. What can I do about this?

Resetting User Password in Lion and Mountain Lion
Boot into your Recovery Partition by holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting.
When the Recovery screen appears, go to the Utilities menu and open Terminal.
    In Terminal, type:
    resetpassword
...a small app will open and allow you to choose the user for whom you want to change the password. If you are the admin, be certain that you choose your admin user. Type in your new password twice and give yourself a good hint. Click OK (or Done or whatever) and reboot, enjoying the use of your new, hopefully memorable, password.
    Good luck,

  • I bought a brand new iPhone that Apple support says it is a replacment, what shall I do?

I bought a brand new iPhone 4 that has started to over-heat, since the first usage, and when I tried to contact Apple support online, they ask for the serial number for the phone that when entered it said "this serial number is for a product that has been replaced, please enter the replacment serial number for warranty info etc..
What shall I do to get a replacement(for the overheat problem)? even though I bought it brand new!!!!
Not to mention the main problem that got me into this which is the excessive heat that makes using the iphone 4 impossible!!!

Well, it is not a well known retailer and I am sure that going to him and telling him this won't make a difference to him, he might be even not aware of the whole thing.
Rather than not having an Apple retail store here in Jordan, if I want to let Apple check the iphone I'll have to DHL it to a country with Apple retail store available in it!

  • Apple TV 2 and my Sony HDTV, no HDCP?  But my PS3 works fine...

I'm disappointed to find that both my Roku box and PS3 work fine on my Sony KDF-E42A10 HDTV with HDMI however my new Apple TV V2 does not.
What is going on here? How come my brand new Apple TV does not work?
I am getting the following ERROR: This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection. This content requires HDCP for playback.
My Apple TV 2 is plugged directly into the HDTV.

Same issue, and I'm pretty ticked... got my apple TV in the mail today (finally), and after a month of anticipation I get it hooked up. I get the same HDCP error message when trying to stream any of the iTunes rentals, or Netflix rentals. Content stored locally on my computer streams perfectly fine with home sharing, and all the other features on the apple tv seem to be working perfectly. But I can't use any of the netflix features, or any of the iTunes rentals either, which will be a major deal breaker.... looks like I'll be sending this thing back! My TV is a JVC 42" LCD, purchased new in January 2010. The specs for my TV say it is fully HDCP compliant. I've tried 4 different cables. My Apple TV 2 is connected directly to the TV, it doesn't pass through a receiver or any sort of switch at all, it's connected directly. My TV has 3 HDMI inputs, and I've tried all 3 of them. What the heck?

  • Got a used iphone 6 plus, when i bought a brand new from utc apple store sandiego

I bought a new iphone 6 plus from apple store utc  Sandiego. While i was playing with the same i noticed that my call time cellular settings was set to 05:00 hrs in less than a hour i bought it.
So i went to the store and asked them to run a diagnosis test and found that there was call logs even for OCT 6 on my phone, while i got the same phone from the store on OCT 7.
The manger was very rude and asked me to return the phone, if i don't like. He didn't even gave a proper explanation  for it.
What shall i do in this case. Is apple doing a big scam

I am not sure, that will help. I went to the same store myself. They don't even care for their customers
Why will it not help? Obviously you have an issue with that store, so make a complaint to Apple Customer Support. Do you wish to fix your situation or just moan here about it?

  • HT1338 I just bought a brand new mac mini, and finally got it authorized for itunes.  I purchased some tv programs and now it is telling me I canʻt play them because my monitor doesnʻt support HDCP... I am using a 30inch mac monitor...

Any ideas how to get this working?  I donʻt have money to go buy a new monitor...

Unfortunately HDCP is a technical requirement for the playback of some movie formats, for example Blu-ray.  If your monitor does offer this, make sure your cabling and connection type also supports it.  If your monitor doesn't offer this, I'm afraid you may have to consider buying a new or additional monitor.  Any other suggestions I could make are not permitted on this forum, I'm afraid.
I have this problem too.  I have a 2005/2006 Apple Cinema Display that's still in perfect working order, but doesn't have support HDCP.  I had to find an alternative way of playing back my blu-rays.

Tying to get what I delete off my I pod touch 5 to my iTunes...

What exactly happens when you try to sync?
    Does iTunes see the iPod?
Was the iPod previous synced to another iTunes library/computer?
Have you successfully synced from this iTunes library/computer before?
If so have you done anything like update iTunes on the computer since it last successfully synced?

  • My iPod Nano will not sync with my brand new Mac Air...will charge

My iPod nano (touch) will not sync with my iTunes on my brand new Macbook Air. It will charge my iPod and give the option to eject the iPod, but it will not recognize my iPod to sync. Any ideas why and how to fix it?

Hey all, I had to call Apple Support to resolve the issue as nothing on the web provided an answer. So for all you out there having the same problem, here's the ituation and full resolution, so you can save time and money (if your product's warranty is expired).
Situation: I bought a brand new Mac Air on 12/7/12 and tried to sync my 6th generation iPod nano (previously configured to a PC) with no sucess. ITunes was only allowing me to charge and eject the nano.
    Solution:
    1. Go to View>sidebar
    2. In the sidebar, click "iPod" under the Devicies category
    3. Click "Music" section next to "Summary" under the status bar
    4. Make sure "Sync" box is checked with your preferred preferences underneath
    5. Click "Sync" in bottom right corner of window
Apparently, iTunes 11 is quite different and the sidebar with usual options and playlists does not appear unless selected in the "View" drop-down.
    FINISHED!

  • BRAND NEW Mac Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD, kernel panics!

I just received my brand new Mac Pro today. It's a BTO machine with the upgrade to the NVIDIA 8800GT, a second optical drive and a Mac OS X Server license. The system has Mac OS X server installed on the default 320GB drive. I decided to use the server license as a virtual machine running in Leopard client. So, I installed 2 new 500GB Seagate 7200.11 (Retail) drives in the machine, zeroed them out in prep for installing Leopard client.
At this point, I pop in a freshly-purchased retail copy of the Leopard DVD and restart. When I try to boot from the DVD and install Leopard to one of the new Seagate drives, I get kernel panics - need to restart the machine. Also tried booting from the Mac OS X Server DVD and this too only caused kernel panics. The DVD's read perfectly from within Mac OS X Server and boot from hard disks is flawless.
I spent an hour on the phone with a level 2 tech at Apple - Tried swapping out the RAM and moving around the DIMMS to no avail. I am at a loss to what this could be. Seems to be a hardware issue and the tech thought it was likely a problem with one of the memory risers but couldn't send replacements. Anyone else with a similar issue?
This is my first Mac and it looks like this Mac Pro is going back for an exchange and I'll have to wait yet another 10-12 days for a replacement to arrive. Bummer.
Am I missing something simple here? Does this seem to be a hardware issue?
If anyone has any ideas before I ship this one back, please write!!!

New Mac Pros will not install the Leopard retail disc. They will only install the Leopard disc which shipped with them labeled Mac Pro. That has always been true. Macs can only boot the system that ships on DVD in the box that came with them, and newer retail releases. They can never boot from an older retail release than what shipped in the box.
