I bought a iphone 3gs from a friend and I was told to put in my sim card and connect it to the computer and it stays on the recovery screen, does anyone know the reason why this is happening?

I dont know if its my computer because it says that the device is unknown and doesnt come up as apple mobile device but I've watched youtube videos that seemed like they had similiar problems but they didnt work for me. I've tried the whole home button thing,updating itunes and everything but the recovery screen still wouldnt go away. This is the first time I'm using an iphone so I'm totally clueless about whats happening.

Installing a SIM card will never rectify the device being in recovery mode.
Put the device in DFU mode and attempt to restore it as new via iTunes. Google "DFU mode" for instructions.

You don't add media (other than music) to your device by dragging. It's by synching.

When getting email from google mail, I am missing many emails which I can see on my desk top. I get the last 7 days of emails, then I miss two months of emails, then I get month 4-6. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening.

yes all emails are in the web based gmail. I have not deleted the account. I forgot to mention that it has been working on my iphone for over 2 years quite well and while I was giving access to the same gmail account to my wifes new iphone when this happend. It changed both the emails on my existing phone and my wifes new phone.

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. If AMDS is running, you are using a USB port directly on the computer and not a hub, you have disconnected other USB devices except keyboard and mouse, you have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925, You have tried cleaning the connector on the bottom of the phone, you have tried a different cable, you have installed the latest USB drivers for your computer, you have disabled your antivirus and firewall, you are running as an Administrator account and you have tried creating a new user on your computer and connected when logged in as that user then you have exhausted my knowledge. The only other thing to try is a different computer. If it isn't recognized on a different computer you have a hardware problem. Good luck!
