If you successfully restored the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and are still having a problem you very likely have an hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order..

Pinger - free texts and calls currently requires iOS 4.0, so an iPod Touch with iOS 4.2.1 on it can use that App.
As for the previous owner's content, legally, it doesn't belong to your daughter and so she isn't entitled to keep it. (Can't say I agree with these outdated copyright laws, but that's the legal position, not Apple's). So that is why the iPod will erase the previous content.
Perhaps you should just bite the bullet and put the update on and then your daughter starts from scratch adding her own content. Presumably, at the moment, she cannot actualy add anything of her own since that will delete the previous content, and therefore she is stuck with a choice that isn't hers. The benefit of starting afresh is that she would then have her own choice of music (and let's face it, the cost buying one song at a time is pocket money - if she gets it of course) and not someone else's. Many Apps, such as Pinger, are free to install, others can be also at pocket money level.
However, should you go that route, you need to be aware of in-app purchases. I notice Pinger has this feature, to buy (for example) 100 minutes for £1.49, or about $2. I'm don't understand why that should be necessary when it's promoting itsellf as a "free text" and "free calls" App.

The screen is telling you to connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable and restore via iTunes on the computer.

Hi - concerned, not very technical mom here, trying to help out my son. His iPod touch shuts off, goes to the front screen, takes screen shots, sometimes the touch works and sometimes it doesn't, it blinks, I am not sure what to do. I've had this same problem. It ended up being a problem in the hardware. Your going to need to take it to a Apple Genius Bar. They will help you understand the problem better.

I have 3 iPods on my iTunes account. Two of which are my daughters. I have purchased a new iPod touch for my daughter, and want to establish her own iTunes account WITHOUT having all of her music go away when we do this.

I multiple ipods (3 different users) on the same itunes account. All of the music is either from cd's or purchased from iTunes legally. A new iPod has been purchased, and I want to open a new iTunes account for the daughter so I can actually use iClound myself. How can I open a new account without losing all of the music that is tied to MY account, that is hers. I would like not to lose all of that music. Thanks

Content is permanently tied to the account that it was purchased with.
Simply plug the iDevice into the computer and sync the content you want.

2nd gen iPod touch - do I need to use Google calendar now?

I've updated my Mac to OSX 10.7.2 but I've not upgraded to iCloud, because I have a 2nd gen iPod touch.
As I've read Apple has not including calendars support for these, do I need to use Google calendar now?

If they're dumping my 2 year old bit of kit it's a poor show, I will keep it going as it still does a job for me, it's a shame I'll may have to move away from apple and I guess iTunes too.

My daughter just got a 2nd gen Touch. She wants to buy some apps that use a microphone for input. I realise the 2nd gen doesn't come supplied with inline mic earphones (as opposed to the 3rd gen, which does), but can she buy any brand of earphone with inline mic and expect them to work?
Or does she need official Apple ones?

2nd Gen IPod Touch - Software crash using Krusell Music Multi Adapt Case

When using my new 2nd gen iPod Touch with my old Krusell Music Case. When I close the case the software of my iPod crashes and the only way I can restart is to do a hard reset. It was Ok with my 1st gen iPod Touch.
Is it possible that the magnets that are used for keeping the lid closed are effecting the electronics somehow? Do I have a problem with the iPod?

I doubt if it is the magnets but it is more likely that case is pushing on the Sleep/Wake button. I don't believe the gen 1 and gen 2 iPods are the same size.
You can test the magnet theory by turning your iPod on and moving the magnets over the device.

Does anyone know if I could return my 1st gen ipod touch for the 2nd gen or even give it to them and get money off the 2nd gen? ... and the second generation Touch doesn't have a mic anyway. Chris will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe, if you want to use a mic-dependant App on a 2nd gen Touch, then you need to buy a headphone/mic combination to plug in instead of standard headphones. I don't know +at all+ about the 3rd gen.
Non-mic Apps can run on a 1st gen Touch if you purchase the software upgrade, but whether that also includes mic-Apps, well, once again, I don't know. (Not much I do know really, is there? )
Perhaps you need to consider how much you need mic dependant Apps before rushing into the major expense of a Touch which may not actually meet your needs. There's always the iPhone of course.

I have a 2nd gen iPod touch. Is it possible & how can or do I delete applications such as Nike + iPod, Game Center, Maps, Calculator, & other similar applications that I absolutely do not want or that I have major issues & prioblems using?

All the other apps can not be deleted but if you want to get rid of the icons go to setting>general>ristrictions>and disable the stuff that you want.

HD Video's Won't Play on 2nd Gen Ipod Touch

I recently bought a 2nd gen ipod touch, i had owned one before, but that was when HD videos were basically just starting, so i had never had problems with getting tv shows on my ipod, i have recently downloaded 2 HD episodes of Family Guy, but whenever i try to put them on my ipod an error comes up that they aren't a supported format, is there a way i can trade these HD versions for SD versions, or a way that i can get a converter that can put them in the right format? (When i looked on itunes, i only saw hd episodes, because it was season 9 of family guy, i have no clue if there are any SD versions, so a converter would be the most helpful)

HD is NOT supported on the 2nd gen ipod touch.
Every time you download HD content, the SD version automatically is downloaded as well. Sync this version, not the HD version.
I would guess that there is an SD version/ Look more closely.

2nd gen iPod touch+iOS 4.2.1=problems

Hi!I have a 2nd gen iPod touch which has iOS 4.2.1 I'm using it with a Samsung Galaxy microphone headset. Since I have iOS 4.2.1 on the iPod, it skips tracks, stops in the middle of the track and starts to play another one or just simply puts itself into FFW or stops while in my pocket. I'm using the device with this Samsung Galaxy earphone/mic combination for a long time, however I had no problems with it under earlier iOS versions. The shuffle for shake option is switched off in the settings of the iPod. Why is my iPod still going crazy in my pocket? Even when the screen is locked?

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory defaults.
If you still have the problem then you may have a problem with the headphones. Maybe a bad connection or intermitent short/open.
