1. Turn off Find My iPhone
2. Erase device

If photos were synced from your computer then they can't be deleted directly on the iPad, you will need to remove/de-select them from where you synced it from on your computer and re-sync.

Activation Lock is doing exactly what it was designed to do - preventing a non-owner from using the device as their own.
But why just "throw it away"? The dealership should be willing to tuck it away in their lost and found, as the owner may well show up looking for it?

Tried to erase all data from iPod touch, now it won't even turn on?

I am not sure how the system was wiped as I was not the one that did it, but now the device will not even acknowledge a charge from either the computer or wall charger. Not sure how to restore the operating system on the device. Any ideas or suggestions?

Yes you can as long as the previous owner erased the iPad according to these instructions. If the previous owner didn't do this, contact him or her and ask for their help. If the last owner cannot be reached or will not cooperate, you will eventually run into problems that you will not be able to resolve and you will have a useless brick on your hands.

I can't erase all data and content from my iPhone 4s. It says iCloud account not verified, when it only asks for my Apple ID to erase all data and content.

It's really been puzzling me, I've never logged in the Apple site on a laptop before - I have been getting the same message 'Unable to verify iCloud account' every time I try and erase all data and content from my iPhone 4s. When I go to iCloud on my laptop and sign in using my Apple ID it signs me in. These are the same log in details I am prompted for when trying to erase all data/content from the phone. My seller on e-bay was forced to FINALLY give me his Apple ID and Password (also answers to security questions to finally re-set all of Apple's security stuff on their website) when I got my wife a used iPad 2 for her business this Christmas. Not a good resolution. However, you ABSOLUTELY cannot re-set an iPad 2, using OS 7 (or presumably later updates), because of the security features found in the OS, simply by following the steps outlined on this thread at http://supportprofile.apple.com and https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do. My seller followed those instructions to the letter and also did: un-link/sync the device from his iTunes program on his computer, delete it from his Apple ID and re-set the iPad through general preferences on the device before he mailed it to me. All suggestions made here or on other Apple Community threads. When I got it last week, it was a brick which still demanded his old Apple ID and password regardless as to what we did. So, the solution, in my opinion, (since most sellers are not going to be comfortable with giving up their info) is for the Seller, before he delivers it to a buyer, to: [1] perform the 3 steps I referenced above; [2] using his existing Apple ID, password and security questions, set-up a new account at Apple with a new name (John Doe) email address and password which CAN be shared with the buyer. Something simple like getting a yahoo or gmail address, logging into the iPad's old account and changing everything to this new email address, a mutually-agreed upon password and at least 2 security questions/answers; [3] BEFORE mailing the iPad, go into "general" preferences and change everything to John Doe instead of the old seller's name; [4] Once the buyer gets it, they will have to change everything into their name with their own account settings, preferences, etc. And, if it's true that Apple will make them wait 90 days to do another re-set, all one can say is "Thank you Apple" for making a used market for your devices as difficult as possible.

Sounds like your iPhone was hacked to unofficially unlock it. You can put it in Recovery mode, connect it to iTunes and Restore it in iTunes. Then you will need to call AppleCare, give them the model and serial numbers and find out which cell provider it is locked to. After you get that information contact that cell provider and see if you can get it officially unlocked.

I wanted to get an N86, but didn't want to spend the vast amount it costs for what's left of the new ones available in the US.
So I bought a used one on eBay. The guy I bought it from seemed to have a good rep, and the phone arrived in good shape.
However, I wonder what the likelihood is that folks get phones where the firmware has been modded to include spyware/malware/viruses/etc.
Has anyone had any experience with such things, or heard of them?
Right now I'm using the Nokia Software Updater to update the N86 to the latest firmware. Hopefully that'll stop anything bad potentially happening (unless hackers are able to hide nasty stuff on the SIM, which is required by Nokia Software Updater to be installed in order to do the firmware update for some unknown and strange reason).

Viruses don't exist but small amounts of malware do but they are very rare and usually it's obvious when they run. You would never encounter one under normal web browsing or installing apps from trusted sources such as the ovi store.
Even if the phone had been hacked the chances of it containing something nasty are almost non-existent.
What you should do is wipe the phone before you start using it. Dial, like a phone number *#7370# and this will reset the phone back to how it was from new. All data that you have added will be lost.
