I bought an iPhone4 locked to Orange UK, why can't it be unlocked?

I contacted Orange UK and they said that this iPhone4 is ready to be unlocked, but they can't unlock the phone because I am not the original contract owner. Why can't Apple unlock this phone, because the original owner doesn't care and has sold it?
As far as I understand, I am one of at least 3 owners for this phone. I guess there could be more.
I just wanted to have a normal iPhone, why can't Apple help on this issue?
I have previously had many apple products, this is the first one I bought used adn just wanted to restore it to normal.
Another thing is that 3rd party services can unlock it for 200$. What is that they do to unlock it? Why can't apple make a small comission for unlcoking iPhones instead. People find ways to cheat and ripoff people who doesn't deserve to pay extra for the phone they bought.

No. Apple has no part in the decision ot lock or unlock at all. Lock/unlock is 100% the decision of the carrier. Apple has nothing to do with this decision.

Repairs can be done at any Apple Authorised service provider anywhere, but you will probably be paying for it.

Don't waste your time, as I've already stated, Sprint WILL NOT autrhorize the unlocking of your sim slot.
You wasted your money. Return the phone for a refund, if you can, otherwise, sell it to someone that can use it on Sprint's network in the US.

As stevejobsfan said. But also if your profile is correct and you are running system 10.7 on your iMac, you will not have much portability between the two either. Think of them as 2 different programs that just happen to have the same name.
OS 10.9 Mavericks' version of Pages has greater compatibility with the app version of it. But there are a lot of consequences to moving to Mavericks which should not be done lightly. Read around a bit on it before making any decision to upgrade.

Unlocking an iPhone 5 bought from Apple, locked to Orange

Hi all, hope someone here can help me.
I bought my mum a 2nd hand iPhone 5 for Chrsitmas. The phone was bought from Apple directly so was unlocked but the bloke used his contract Orange sim in it for a few weeks. That sim is no out of contract and the bloke has left them.
My mum wants to use her 3 PAYG sim in it but Orange have now locked it which seems harsh seeing as the phone was never in contract with them, just the sim was.
I have submitted a form through Orange/EE website to get it unlocked which can take up to 20 days. As the phone number used to lock the phone is no longer in use I'm just wondering how this works now? I've had an email confirmation to say they ahve recieved the request and to await a further email in 20 days.
Can we not take the phone to Apple to get it unlocked or do we have to wait for Orange? Seems silly that they have sim locked it even thought the phone was never on contract with them.
Hope this has made sense to someone and that someone can hopefully give me some advice!

You'll need to contact Orange, but a warning most carrier would want you on their service before unlocking it.

Only the carrier the phone is locked to can unlock it, Apple cannot unlock phones. Being Sim free does not mean its unlocked. Just that it has no sim.

There is no such thing as an unlock code. Only the carrier it is locked to can unlock it.
If the phone you got replaced was hacked to unlock it instead of legitimately unlocked, then you will have to contact the carrier the original phone was locked to.
If your phone was legitimately unlocked, then contact the Apple Store where you had the phone replaced.

That is because the phone is locked to the Orange network and an o2 sim card is not going to work with a phone that is locked to Orange.
You either need to purchase an Orange sim card and use that in the phone, or you need to get your friend to contract Orange and get the phone unlocked so that you can use an 02 sim card.
At the moment you will never be able to use the 02 sim card if the phone is locked to Orange. Either use Orange or get the phone unlocked. It is as simple as that.

Only Orange Jordan can unlock this phone for you, provided that they offer this service. You can't use UAE SIM in this phone or it will get locked.
If Orange Jordan doesn't offer unlocking, then your best shot is to sell your phone in Jordan and buy a new one from UAE.

What have you done since? I have the same problem with iPad I bought second hand from an individual. The seller won't give me refund or provide me previous owner's contact info. Apple Support told me to contact local police to locate the original owner so I did. Since police didn't have report for this iPad's serial number they won't handle this as theft. I live in Utah and the seller I met with told me he is from Northern India so who knows which country this iPad came from. I wish to let the original owner know i have his/ her missing iPad since Apple doesn't care about consumers once they sold their products.
