Thanks, varjak, it is too easy to fall into use of jargon assuming everyone understands what it means.
One additional point in all of this, not all "iDevice" apps run on every "iDevice". Some are customized for a specific device, or class of devices such as the iPod/iPhone with their smaller screen. Others for just the iPads for their larger screens. So the user needs to be sure they are getting an app that will work on their specific device.
And to Phoneboone, you do need to purchase the app again if it is for a different class of equipment. When you are looking at apps such as iWorks for the Mac and iWorks components for the iPad, the iPad versions are very inexpensive. Pages is only $10 (US) which is really cheap for such a good word processor that reads and saves in the MS Word format.
Anyway, search for what you need and just enjoy the convenience of so many options for apps.

There are many ways to import your PDFs into Papers for iPad. Obviously the preferred way is if you have a Mac and also use Papers for Mac**. The two apps can wirelessly sync their libraries. But also without a Mac there are plenty of ways. You can upload PDFs directly via iTunes, or you can import PDFs attached to an email from Mail on the iPad. Alternatively, use the Papers bookmarklet to open a webpage you found in Mobile Safari and download the PDF from there. Or you can use the built-in search engines to search for articles and download the PDFs.

It sounds like some apps were purchased using another Apple ID.
ALL purchases are permanently associated with whatever Apple ID was used to originally obtain them. Apps can not be updated without knowledge of that ID and, more importantly, its password. Apple IDs can not be merged and purchases can not be transferred from one ID to another.

The lack of an iTunes store and AppStore in my country(Macedonia) is frustrating, as would many other users agree. My question is not why, but how can I help apple achieve this? How can I help create both the iTunes and App store? I believe that many developers in Macedonia are more than willing to become iOS Developers, and there is a lot of music, books and movies to go around too. This works for apps you've acquired, but does not work for built-in features. I am regularly nagged to update Digital Camera RAW Compatibility (currently I'm being nagged about Update 6.03). I've tried the method described above - the steps are available, but they appear to have no effect. I think this is perhaps because RAW compatibility is an element of OSX rather than a separate app. I don't use RAW format with cameras, and have no need for this feature. Even if I did, I have none of the 13 camera models listed in this update.
It is just a nuisance, but if anyone knows how to suppress this I would appreciate instructions.
I would also be curious if anyone can explain why on earth Apple would incorporate RAW camera format compatibility into the core of its operating system. It shakes my confidence in their operating system design.
